2 hrs to upload Lion from the app store???

I downloaded Lion from the App store to upgrade from Snow Leopard.  After the dowload the display suggested 30 minutes to install.  It actually took over 2 hours????
Any ideas as to why it would take so long?
I'm hoping it is a sign of a failing hard drive.  I feel I can replace the HD myself without taking it to the Apple store.
To those in the know do you think it's a failing HD?
thanks
Dennis

Ah, sorry. The 30 minute install time is a rough estimate. Since Lion is being installed on top of Snow Leopard, your software, and data, there's a lot for the installer to do. If you are installing Lion onto an empty drive, 20-30 minutes is realistic. I have a MBA with SSD and I decided on a clean install for it. It was very close to 20 minutes. However when I installed it on my iMac (a 1 TB drive about 2/3 full) it took well over an hour. I'd say 70-80 minutes.
The installer has to perform a drive integrity check, it has to scan for certain plug-ins and software that will be put into an incompatible software folder, and a lot more. You've done a drive test and found nothing wrong. If over the next couple weeks you find that Lion is pretty stable, stop worrying about it. If you start getting kernel panics and software hangs, especially when the program is reading or writing data, then start thinking about the drive again.

  • How do you erase and reinstall a hard drive without a disc? I bought this mac book pro under a year ago and am pretty sure i downloaded mountain lion from the app store. Basically Im having startup issues and this is the final step Ive reached

when I start my laptop it loads a third of the way and shuts down automaticallyI've tried to safe boot, repairing discs and clearing RAM but nothing has worked. basically I've come to the final step of having to a erase my hard drive and reinstall mountain lion however Apple support suggest that I install from a disc however I installed mountain lion from the App Store. can anyone help me go about this?

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

All my electronics are about a year old.   iPad is Model MB293LL (4.2.1) only wi-fi - no phone.
MacBook Pro is  OSX 10.6.8 Build 10K549.  Also have an AT&T iPhone that I basically use as a Palm, since I changed carriers.
    Thank you for your help.
ps: I got an error message and it looks like this did not get posted the first time.  2nd try.

Open the Mac App Store on your MacBook Pro
Hold the Option key and click on “Purchases”
Hold the Option key and click on “OS X Lion” from the purchased app list
“Installed’ should now say “Install” which allows you to download OS X Lion.
This assumes you are using the same Apple ID on both computers.
Lion does not get installed on an iPad. It runs iOS.

  • Creating my own Fusion Drive: Do I need to buy Mountain Lion from the app store to reinstall the OS? Do I lose the iLife apps?

I just bought a Mac Mini (late 2012) with a 1TB HDD and I'm planning to install a second drive, an SSD (Samsung 840 evo) and create the Fusion Drive, and I have a couple of questions:
1- I've read lots of articles on how to do this but I'm not sure if I have to buy Mountain Lion from the app store (to reinstall the OS after I install the second drive) since I'm not able to see it on the "Purchased" list of apps, or if I can just reinstall OS X with OS X Utilities.
2- I read somewhere that if I make my own Fusion Drive when I reinstall OS X I will lose iLife, is this true? Or will I be able to redownload it from the store? I really don't want to lose iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand and I'm confused about it.
Thanks in advance for any help and information you can give me!

Thankyou very much lllaass, that's exactly what I wanted to be sure about!

That requirement is referring to the need for 2gB of RAM, not hard drive space.

You can use iCloud with 10.7.5. You do not need to upgrade to Yosemite. You should provide a minimum of 15 GBs of free space or 10% of the hard drive's capacity, whichever is greater.
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • Downloading  Lion from the app store

I purchashed Lion from the App stor and was able to download it on my Mac Pro. I just got a new MacBook Pro which has 10.6.8 on it and want to download Lion to that. I accessed the app store on the MBP and see where the download option for Lion is insode the purchases window. When I hit download It asks me for my Apple ID and passwrod after that I hot download and nothing happens.
Now I also see if I click on the item I get a message saying item not available in U.S. Store
    Any help?

A new MBP with Snow Leopard, or new to you? MBPs haven't come with SL for years.
Lion is no longer available in the Mac App Store. It has been replaced by Mt Lion. Apple constantly reminds folks to make backup copies of their software because it may not always be available for redownload in the future.

  • I can't download Lion from the App Store.

I am trying to purchase Lion from the App Store on my MacBook Pro. Every time I click on the "Buy App" button, I have to log-in 3 times (twice to verify billing info), and then the "waiting" wheel next to the forward and back buttons just keeps spinning. I have checked "Purchases" but it is not there. I have restarted my computer but that didn't help. I have made sure that my computer is compatible with Lion, but I still have this problem. Any ideas?

I had double-checked all the info when it asked me to verify, but after you made the suggestion, I decided to go into my account first, enter my security code, check that all the other info was correct, and retry. This time it worked! The strange thing is, all the info was correct all the other times too. But thank you; I wouldn't have gone into my account first if you hadn't suggested I check the info.

  • Unable to download Mountain Lion from the App store

Hi, when I try to download Mountain Lion from the app store I get the message, " The product distribution file could not be verified ... " Obviously I'm doing something really stupid. Advice welcome!
    Thanks

A belated thanks for your help. I'd never have solved it otherwise. Maybe Apple could change the automatic reply that I got initially ("The product distribution file could not be verified ....") othewise they risk loosing customers.
    Thanks again.

  • I keep getting "hash mismatch" when trying to download Mountain Lion from the App store

I've been trying to download the new Mountain Lion from the App Store & keep getting "hash mismatch" message. I was able to download on my 1 computer, but no luck on the 2nd computer, which is up-to-date on all updates & software. Support even put a fresh copy of the App in my account & I still get that same message. Someone suggested AppCleaner, but how do you delete the OS to re-install the new. Didn't think that was possible. Any suggestions - I've tried quitting & logging out of the App Store & even re-starting (several times)

    -  Temporarily disable anti virus software if installed.
    -  Apps such as Little Snitch, Net Nanny, and Hands Off can prevent apps from downloading including Mountain Lion.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select Mountain Lion. Then right or control click where you see Installed then click Install.
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.

What you donwloaded was the OS installer. You still have to do the installation.
To get started, double click on the download, then double click again and follow instructions.
