2 Ide + 1 Sata

MOBO: Neo2-P with 2.6GHZ Intel chip, 1 GB RAM
Very new at the SATA game, but I have a very simple setup that I can't seem to get to run efficiently, most likely because of a questionable BIOS setup.  I have 2 IDE drives hooked up to IDE1, DVD combo hooked up to IDE2, and 1 SATA 10k rpm drive hooked up to SATA1.  I'm running Win 2k, BTW.  The IDE drives work fine, and when I move large amounts of data bewteen them (as a simple test) the transfer is very fast.  But when I transfer files to and from the SATA drive, it's VERY slow, as though the communication between the SATA drive and the rest of the computer is not correct (the formatting of it in Disk management also took about 8-9 hours!) I not experienced with a BIOS setup that includes the SATA drive, and I'm sure there are many possible configurations that I did not try, but the one peripherals configurations that seemed to make the BIOS recognize all the components was the following:
On-Chip ATA Operate mode: Legacy (even though Win2k should work wth Native)
ATA Coniguration: PATA
Keep SATA enabled:Yes
PATA Channel selection: Both
SATA Ports Def: P0-1st p1-2nd
I have a feeling this isn't right, but it seemed to be the configuration that resulted in showing all the components in their rightful place in the Standard CMOS.
One last thing that shows that the communication with the SATA is off:  I run an audio recording app - when I use the SATA as the source of the recording files, playback is SUPER choppy - but when I run the same files from the C drive, playback is smooth as silk.  The 10k SATA drive should theoretically beat out the C drive though.  Any ideas on how this should be set up?
Thanks,
Hop

Just to clarify a little:
The parts you are crediting to me from that thread are actually from Maesus' FAQ thread. I just quoted it in my post.
The settings that Danny posted are the most appropriate for your setup. The additional "P0/P1 etc" settings only specify which of the 4 Intel data channels the SATA drives will be placed in the Standard Cmos settings and shouldn't affect XP booting or not.
None of those settings should be causing the slow transfer speeds that you describe. All they do is configure the amount and order of the Intel IDE/SATA data channels. They're either enabled or they're not.
After setting things like Danny suggested, open Windows Device manager>>IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers and find the channel that has the SATA and check the "advanced" tab to confirm that it is operating in UDMA5 mode.
You could also try Serial2 connector.
Make sure there are no sharp bends in the serial cable. They are suseptible(sp?) to failure this way.
Have you tried any hdd benchmarks? What results do you get?
I have the excat problem in XP. I checked the controllers and its not set to UDMA5 but PIO Mode. Hmn.. kinda new to this and dont know what it means but is that the root of my slow SATA disk? If so anyway I can change it to UDMA5? cause there aint an option in the advance tab.

  • ATA/IDE to SATA upgrade

is it possible to do ATA/IDE to a SATA hard drive upgrade for powerbooks and if so, is there a ATA/IDE to SATA converter especially made for the powerbook? If there is is there a link to find this converter it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi, Denny. No, a SATA drive can't be used in a Tibook. There may be adapters you could use in a situation where there's room available, but there isn't any extra space in a Powerbook.
If you bought a SATA drive by mistake, that would explain why you can't find a suitable connector to attach your ATA flex cable to, as reported in your other recent post here.

  • How can i convert IDE to SATA

It is possible if i want to convert IDE HDD to SATA, ATA ? If yes so tell me how ?

I am talking about BIOS, i think this is software
If you'd researched about the differences then you would'nt think this is software or BIOS issue. I believe it to less than 2 minutes to search and find/read the differences using a search engine.
    Google
search results for "What's the difference between IDE and SATA hard drives?"
Your question is like asking how to convert fiber optic cable into copper cable. Or how to convert a V8 engine into a Wankel engine.
You really need to learn something about the hardware you think you want to alter before you think you can alter it somehow with software. And don't guess about BIOS or this or that.
Also if you plan to change to a new drive then an SDD would probably be the way to go if you can afford it and if your computer supports it. Much faster access times.
SSD vs. HDD: What's the Difference?
    SDD versus HDD access speeds
    "SSDs are Faster
SSDs can have 100 times greater performance, almost instantaneous data access, quicker boot ups,  faster file transfers, and an overall snappier computing experience than hard drives. HDDs can only access the data faster the closer it is from the read
write heads, while all parts of the SSD can be accessed at once."

  • P31 Neo V2 , confused by SATA/IDE? SATA drive seemingly using UDMA 5?

HI guys.  I am a little confused after using slipstreamed SATA drivers to install XP Pro SP3 on my new PC and  a SATA 2 500gb drive.
When I look in device manager I dont see any SCSI controllers at all,  under IDE controller I see ICH7 SATA and ICH7 UDMA drivers AND TWO primary IDE channels and TWO secondary channels.
When I look into the chanels, I only have 2 items attached (correct), one IDE DVD drive using one of the primary channels at UDMA 4 and the SATA 2 500 GB which is seemingly using the other primary IDE and running at UDMA 5!
How can I get the 500gb SATA 2 drive to use the SATA 2 - 3gb channel which is advertised for the board?  At the moment it seems to be using IDE compatibility mode and I cant get it to move over to SATA whatever I do.  The board has no AHCI option in the bios, only SATA on/off, IDE on/off.  The default is both on, and thats how I installed windows XP.
Have I been conned when it said SATA 3gb capable?

I know.  That is why I said it was unnecessary for this mainboard (none of the drivers are needed).

Not entirely. Part of your statement in that forum was wrong.  This part of your comment was correct:
    Quote
that its meant to be that way.
    But this one wasn't:

SATA is a form of IDE apparantly
SATA is not really a "form of IDE" (I never told you that and that user is right when he says "thats not correct").  The IDE/Legacy Mode is an operating mode of the SATA Controller which will allow Windows to handle SATA Drives as IDE Devices (for maximum plug&play compatibility). It does not mean that the SATA Drives operate as IDE Devices (or are IDE devices).
And this is what that user said as well:
    Quote
because your mainboard has Legacy modus enabled for the SATA controler/ports
There is no contradiction here.  And to be more precise:  The SATA Controller of the ICH7 Southbridge only supports IDE/Legacy Mode, so there is no way to put it into any other operating mode (AHCI or RAID).
I will attach a screenshot of my Device Manager (I use the German Version of XP, but you will find the important information anyway).  I use a P45 Platinum.  The SATA Controller integrated into the ICH10R Southbridge is currently running in IDE/Legacy Mode.  My SATA-II HD is listed as being attached to the one of the Secondary IDE Channels.  As you can see, Windows shows "UDMA 5".
I have used this drive on a number of Intel Boards (975X/ICH7DH Chipset, P35 Platinum/ICH9R Chipset, P965 Neo Combo/ICH8 Chipset).  Whenever the SATA Controller is set to IDE/Legacy Mode, Windows will report IDE Channels and "UDMA 5".  It is a side effect of the IDE/Legacy Mode (for which no SATA Drivers exist (at least not for Intel Chipsets) and no descriptive value whatsoever.  This is basically the price you pay for such a plug & play compatibility mode (make Windows believe it is an IDE Drive), but it does not mean the drive is not operating within in specifications of SATA-II.

Would much appreciate some help if anyone is familiar with this issue!
I'm having a very difficult time getting the the 965 Platinum to recognize my IDE devices, and I don't know why. I've got a Sony DRU-500A DVD burner in the master position, and a Maxtor 6L300R0 hard drive in the slave position. The jumpers on those devices are appropriate for their position. The devices are "usuable", that is, I've been able to run the Windows XP installer (up to a point) and writes have occured to my hard drive, but the installation fails after the portion where you reboot after all the files have been written from the install disk.
In any case, the Standard CMOS screen simply never shows any devices detected on either the IDE Primary Master or Slave entries. I've tried disconnecting the DVD drive and just connecting the Hard Drive as master instead with no improvment. I've also tried disabling the SATA configurations, toggling PCI IDE Busmastering. Nothing works.
I've never been able to boot into Windows.
There was a point where the JMicron Raid menu showed this drive as a raid drive for reasons that aren't clear to me (the drive may have been a raid drive in the past). I've set the drive back to non-raid, rebooted back into my old system and everything checks out. No problems at all, so I think that there are any RAID issues.
I'm not a pro at building systems, so there could be user error anywhere alonog the way.
    Any ideas? I'm bamboozled!

  • From IDE to SATA

I am looking to upgrade from my old hard drives (a 20gb ultra66 and a 60 gb ultra133) to a new SATA setup. I have a few questions about setups on my mobo. I was looking at getting the Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10,000RPM SATA Hard Drive(s)... my question would be can I use one drive only? Do I have to use a raid setup? and if so, which raid config (Raid 0 right?) for most performance? What are overall opinions on this device? Thanks for the tips!

Well, I have looked online and decided to get 2 drives and just use them standard SATA (No Raid). The two drives are:
Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10,000RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model WD740GD, OEM Drive Only
    Specifications:
    Capacity: 74GB
    Average Seek Time: 4.5 ms
    Buffer: 8MB
    Rotational Speed: 10000 RPM
    Interface: Serial ATA
    Features: High Performance SATA Interface
    Packaging: OEM Drive Only
    $177.00
Maxtor 300GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model 6B300S0, OEM Drive Only
    Specifications:
    Capacity: 300GB
    Average Seek Time: 9.3 ms
    Buffer: 16MB
    Rotational Speed: 7200 RPM
    Interface: Serial ATA 150
Features: SATA II, -NCQ [Native Command Queuing]
    Manufacturer Warranty: 3 years
    Packaging: OEM Drive Only
    $205.49
I plan to use the Raptor for my OS and most programs and the Maxtor for music, dvds, games, ect... My question now shifts to which headers should I use for this config (I am not planning to raid). Secondly, can anyone recomend a good way to go about installing these... the harddrives I have right now (see sig) are set up similar, 20gb C: for OS and programs and 60GB D: for music and games... Can I just image each harddrive to its respective sata and work? (I am pretty sure the 60GB will work fine but I'm not so sure about the OS) Thanks for all the advice
--I would also like to leave the 60Gb IDE drive in to use as backup for my music.. thanks again

  • Help! Can't get IDE 3 - SATA to work.....

    Hi all,
after going to some of the threads regarding SATA/PATA IDE controller and setup, I am even more confused.
I built my first system back in January and had some issues with my video card (ATI AIW 9800 Pro), which are now finally resolved (after 2 RMA’s).
Last night I upgraded the BIOS successfully to v 1.4.
Here is my problem: I hooked up a mobile 250 Gig WD HD to IDE 3 (strictly for data back-up)– which is not recognized. When I first installed XP and hit F6 nothing happened – I had the “VIA SATA RAID driver” diskette in the A: drive – but the installation process just went on….
Now I finally (with help from ATI customer support) got my video card installation issues resolved and I don’t want to do a re-install of XP.
Is there any way to install the necessary drivers without re-installing the OS?
(if yes – can I use my diskette/disc – or go to MSI’s website for a “live update”?)
What would be the correct BIOS setting?
Remember – I do not need Raid – just IDE 3 hook-up for a removable HD.
    Thank you for your help,
    hansmann

    What am I doing wrong???
I am getting the message “No drive attached to FasTrack controller” in BIOS – which indicates to me that the drive is not seen or not connected. So I checked the settings – no jumpers, replaced the conductor cable and made sure the power connector was attached.
    Same message…
This is on my IDE 3 single, removable 250 GB WD HD – trying to set up as Promise
    RAID for data back up.
Under “Disk Mgmt” only the 2 HD’s on IDE 1 show up – the same under “Disk drives”.
Under SCSI and Raid controller both, the VIA serial ATA Raid and the Win XP Promise
FasTrack 376/378 ™ controllers are showing.
When I am hitting control F in BIOS – nothing happens (at the Promise utility screen).
Also, I have XP pro installed – so all of this is on an existing OS, not a new install.
What do I miss??? This is driving me crazy.
As usual – your help is appreciated.

  • Z68 WIN 7 will not boot after setting drive BIOS from IDE to SATA

    MSI Z68MA-ED55 (B3) Motherboard
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit OS
SATA III Solid State Drive with greater than 500 MB/s throughput
After installing WIN7 and all my Applications programs I noticed in the BIOS that the driver for the SSD did not properly set to fully support the SSD but remained in the IDE mode.
This computer was built for technical graphics work and not for child's play.  So I don't want to have to reinstall all the applications software for work with all its required protection features from theft.
    QUESTIONS:
    1. With this high transfer rate SSD, is it worth the performance improvement to reset the BIOS from the IDE driver to the proper driver?
    2. If so, how can I set the BIOS to the correct driver without reinstalling everything?
    3. At some level of the installation the system should have sensed the SSD SATA III and changed the driver from IDE. Where should this take place?

    Hi,
I had the same problem. You need to put it back to IDE, boot to Windows then follow the below instructions and it works fine. (Courtesy of Guru3D)
    Enable AHCI
The last tip we want to give you to gain a little extra performance boost is that you enable AHCI mode. AHCI mode can help out greatly in performance for SSDs. Now, if you swap out an HDD for an SSD with the operating system cloned and THEN enable AHCI in the BIOS, then you'll likely get a boot error / BSOD.
The common question is, is there a solution for this ?
To answer that question (and as we do safely with all modern chipsets) there is a way to safely enable AHCI mode. Here we go:
    1. Startup "Regedit"
    2. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SYSTEM / CurrentControlset / Services
    3. Open msahci
    4. In the right field left click on "start" and go to Modify
    5. In the value Data field enter "0" and click "ok"
    6. exit "Regedit"
    7. Reboot Rig and enter BIOS (typically hold "Delete" key while Booting)
In your BIOS select "Integrated Peripherals" and OnChip PATA/SATA Devices. Now change SATA Mode from IDE to AHCI.
You now boot into windows 7 or Vista, and the OS will recognize AHCI and install the devices. Now the system needs one more reboot and voilla ... enjoy the improved SSD performance.

  • Can I daisy chain IDE and SATA drives w/ FW400?

I have an 250GB IDE drive in ann ext enclosure with two Firewire 400 ports. Can I daisy chain a SATA drive to this or does it have to be another IDE drive?

If both are in their own Firewire case then yes. The FW interface converts whatever internal interface it is so the computer only sees it as a FW device.

  • Replacing Hard Drive: Is it IDE or SATA?

I am looking to upgrade my hard drive to a larger capacity. I plan to take my old one out and put it into a drive enclosure, however I cannot seem to find anywhere in the System Profiler as to whether the Macbook's drive is a SATA connection or IDE.
Anyone care to fill me in?

    2.5" SATA. Max 9.5mm height.

The zip drive is already recognized by the onboard IDE.
I think this is between zip drive and the ITE RAID card.

  • IDE to SATA adapter?

I have a G5 single 1.8 with two harddrives native. I also have two other stacked harddrives set up in a duel enclosure that is connected to my G5 via a firewire port.
The stacked set up uses IDE drives. I had forgotten that and got an SATA drive.
My question is: is there a cable adapter that will allow me to connect to the IDE 168 pin so it will effectively turn the connection into an SATA connection?
    Thanks in advance

This seems to be the cleanest, and least expensive way to go. Someone gave me a ATA/133 250g drive so I'm looking to use it. You don't have to get it at OWC
but they seem to have a lower price.

  • IDE over SATA for Boot Drive

If I have an IDE HD (Hitachi Deskstar 160GB) install along with my WD Sata 250 my BIOS always chooses the IDE drive to boot from. When the IDE drive is detected the sata does not show as available.
How can I have both installed, but boot from the SATA?

can you change the HDD sequence in the BIOS ? Pick the HDD you wanna boot as the 1st HDD.
No, I cannot choose the HDD. If the both the SATA and IDE is physically installed, the SATA does not show .
However if I press F11 during the boot, both the ARE listed. Using F11 to boot, I have booted from the SATA. The IDE shows in WinXP as a "disk drive." I rebooted to see if any subsequent boots would you the SATA (thinking that the F11 function sets it as default), but the boot was with the IDE.
