2 identical printers on 1 laptop

Hi All,
I am currently working with a user that would like to install 2 identical printers on the same laptop. The printer model in question is the HP LaserJet Pro p1102w. The idea is that the user will have a printer available in their vehicle when they travel (which is part of the job), and another in their home that they can use when they get home/before they leave.
The issue I have run into however, is that when I attempt to install the second printer, the drivers are not detected. The original printer we have zero issues with (as far as drivers, installation, etc.) and continues to print just fine when reconnected. When starting the installation I select "Add another printer" as opposed to the other options (Repair, Uninstall) because it seemed like the most logical choice.
Because the drivers cannot be found, the printer appears in "Devices and Printers" as unspecified. This also prevents the installation from finishing. I have tried connecting the 2nd printer to a different USB port also. When connected, the printer makes the proper "device connecting" audible, but the driver installation pop up never happens.
So my main question is: Is this an issue because I'm trying to install 2 of the same printer model on the same laptop? I feel like that is the reason that the driver install is failing out.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Steve

Hello stevie-d,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
To my knowledge, there is not specific issue with having two of the same printer installed on the same computer, I've done it a couple times. Since the first printer has been installed with the original software, the second wouldn't need to have the same software installed.
You could try going to Devices and Printers, deleting the 2nd printer, and then clicking Add a Printer. Go through the steps and try adding the printer this way, I've had the best luck this way.
Hope this helps,
JERENDS

  • Viewing ink on 2 different printers on my laptop when both are connected wirelessly

I have 2 different HP printers (let's call one a 4500 and one a 6500} in different, far-off locations in my home. Both are connected wirelessly to my laptop which runs Windows 7 (64 bit). I have no problem changing from one printer to another on my laptop; each printer will work fine wirelessly. However, I would like to utilize HP's "Solution Center" software for BOTH printers on my laptop, instead of the ONE printer (the 4500) that is available to me now. Any ideas?

If you have the full feature software installed for each printer (get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page) then in Solution Center you should be able to choose between the two.

  • Trying to install multiple All in One Printers on new laptop

Got a new HP Envy laptop running Windows 8.1.   Replacing old HP running XP.  Trying to install two HP All in One printers on my home wireless network  HP 6500 E709n and a HP 7410.  I am stuck in an infinte loop using the HP Print and Scan Doctor.  I load up one printer Driver using the downloads on the website.  When I go to load the other printer, the system won't let me continue until I uninstall the previous printer driver and accessy software.
Anyone know how to get around it?

    Hello again,
Thanks for getting back to me!
Next, I would suggest uninstalling all of the printer software on your computer, performing a clean boot and then reinstalling the OJ 7410 first and then the OJ 6500. Here are the steps and links in order for you.

  • Unable to print with 2 identical printers unless I switch the port setting

I have 2 identical HP Deskjet 6940 printers
(I assume they are identical unless there is a way to verify the guts inside or different)
When ever I want to print to one or the other printer, I have to open into the printer properties and go to Ports and switch between USB001 or USB002.
I have tried uninstalling the printer driver and reinstalling it as well as letting Windows detect the printer driver, but it still creates another Port and one printer always insists on printing to one particular port and the other printer prints to the other.
How do I set both printers to print with the same port so I don't have to constantly go into the properties to switch them back again?

What is your operating system?  In Vista (and I think XP as well) you can go to the Printers folder, right click on the printer, Run as Admonistrator, Properties, (continue),  Ports, check the "Enable Printer Pooling" then check the boxes for the ports for the two printers.  In this case the print job will be sent to the first one that is available.

  • Identity protection for my laptop

Is there any free software to protect my identity  for my laptop?

Please describe what you are trying to prevent. There is antivirus and also anonymous web surfing applications which run your web traffic through a proxy server and then there is anti-theft software that can track your laptop if it gets stolen. Not sure which you are asking about, if it is even one of the above and not something else.

  • Hp officejet 4500 wireless won't print from laptop. It is connected to laptop. It prints from desktop

We have a HP Officejet 4500 wireless printer which was first installed in 2011 without any problems. We also utilize a HP LaserJet P1006 printer (not wireless) with our network. I cannot print from my laptop to either printer, but hubby's desktop has no problem. Both printers stopped working for my laptop at the same time. Everything worked perfectly until a few weeks ago when I could no longer print directly from my Dell Inspiron laptop. When I check on the connectivity of both printers to my laptop, the information tells me the printers are connected to my laptop.
My husband has a Dell desktop (our main computer).
I have tried everything I know to fix this problem, including shutting down the desktop, my laptop, the router, and the printers (including disconnecting the printers from the desktop with the cords that connect to the printers). I have followed all instructions on how to restart the entire system...plug the router in, plug in the printers & turn them on, and lastly restart both computers.
I am not what one would call "computer savvy"; as a matter of fact, I am quite computer-challenged. If any of you can tell me in extremely-easy-to-understand language what to do, I would appreciate your help.

  • Laptop screen won't turn back on after being waked up from pm-suspend

I installed pm-utils and acpid to make my laptop sleep when the lid is shut.
To do this I altered my /etc/acpi/handler.sh to look like this
    http://pastebin.com/9DgQQ30Z
    Changing lines 57, 58 and 59 to:
    button/lid)
    #echo "LID switched!">/dev/tty5
    /usr/sbin/pm-suspend
    esac
The laptop suspends completely fine, and the power light turns from a solid light to flashing. But when I open the lid, the laptop wakes up fine, except for the screen which just stays completely black.
I can't do anything to get it back on, I even can't switch to any virtual terminals, forcing me to to a hard reboot.
This happens also when I just run "sudo pm-suspend" normally with the lid open and use the power button to wake back up. Wakes up fine except for the screen.

First thing that would be helpful to know would be to know what kind of computer you have (e.g. model).
I actually had an identical problem with my laptop. It ended up being an issue with the wireless drivers included in the kernel. Ultimately had to blacklist them and install the ones from the vendor's website. Anyways, start with the model, and we can try to help you from there

i have two identical printers hp photosmart 5514 eprinters and i want to use them wireless.  i have 10 wireless computers and i want to be able to print on computers from either of the printers.  i have the first printer set up and have been using it for 1 year now but printing gets backed up, received a gift of another hp 5514 printer and want to run it  to help with the printing overload.  how do i do this?  i am a couponer for local food banks and have to print a lot.  would appreciate any help!! thanks

    Hi shivawood:
You would need to setup the second printer on your network, which you can do from the front panel of the printer by running the wireless setup wizard. I have included a link to the user guide for your printer which explains how to put the printer on your wireless network.  It starts on page 26.
    http://goo.gl/bYSWW
You will then need to add the second printer to each computer that is going to be sending print jobs to the 2nd printer.  There are 3 links for you on how to do this from Microsoft.
    Windows Vista ---> http://goo.gl/w8yUZM
    Windows 7 ---> http://goo.gl/nWP0Zf

  • Does Tiger require ownership (and sharing) of wired printers on a wireless LAN? My G4 (Tiger) is also wired to the LAN, and can access all wired printers through the router. Wireless Macs cannot even find the printers.

Does Tiger require ownership (and sharing) of wired printers on a wireless LAN? My G4 (Tiger) and all printers are wired to the LAN, and the G4 can access all printers through the router. Additional wireless Macs (Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion) cannot even find the printers. Yet, if the G4 shares the printers, then ALL computers on the LAN can access them. However, this requires the G4 to remain powered. Is there a workaround that would allow me to shut down the G4 and still use the printers?

    Hello BDAqua!
Well, I am halfway there. Following your steps on the Snow Leopard MBP, the newer printer (a Canon MX860 inkjet) appeared automatically under the "default" icon on the ADD printer window. I used the IP icon with the HP Jetdirect-Socket protocol to find and add the older printer, (an HP 4000N). That required running a configuration page from the printer to locate its IP address. I printed to both printers through this laptop with success!
I then followed exactly the same procedure with the Mountain Lion MBP. For both installation attempts, I got an error message window: Unable to verify the printer on your network. "192.168.111" may not exist or is unavailable at this time. Would you still like to create the printer? If I click Continue, it creates the icon and name in the printer list. However when I attempt to print from an app. the next message says, 'Printer is unavailable.'
Why one laptop finds and uses both printers, and the newer laptop does not, just floors me!
Thank you for your ongoing assistance.

  • Two Identical HDDs + RAID0 + (LVM?) + GPT & GRUB2 + Dual Booting

    Hello,
I have been reading about RAID, LVM and GPT. RAID0 is interesting to me since I have two identical HDDs in my laptop and I am looking for better performance and less free-space fragmentation.
My current disk layout looks like the following:
    sda:
    Primary:
    sda1 ntfs system-reserved
    sda2 ntfs windows*
    Logical:
    sda5 ext4 root
    sda6 swap
    sda7 ext4 personal
    sda8 ntfs windows2*
    sdb:
    sdb1 ext4 multimedia
*windows is the C drive and windows2 is the D drive, just needed extra space so I cut off a part of sda7.
What I want to achieve (and based on my understanding of RAID0) is the following:
    GPT:
    sdm1 windows
    sdm2 boot
    sdm3 root
sdm4 home (personal + multimedia from above)
I will use both sda and sdb for this.
    Questions:
    0. Is that even possible (considering windows)? My expectation is no, unless windows uses the same RAID0 implementation as Linux (partition table/layout data and whatnot). In that case, would it be possible to have something similar to the following:
    GPT:
    sda:
    sda1 windows-c-drive
    sdm1 boot
    sdm2 root
sdm3 home (personal + multimedia from above)
    sdb:
    sdb1 windows-d-drive
    sdm1 boot
    sdm2 root
    sdm3 home
    * sdm1,2,3 are the RAID partitions laid out over sda and sdb.
    1. I am not sure what LVM can offer me other than flexible movement/resizing of partitions, which I don't need.
    2. Does RAID0 imply read/write parallelism? Which would provide better read/write performance?
    3. Has anyone had experience booting Windows 7 on GPT + RAID0 shared with Linux? (As shown above)
    4. Any suggestions as to how to reach my goal?
    5. I will need to backup everything and reinstall windows and Arch with RAID, correct? Which I am ready to do anyways.

There is an option in the "BIOS" settings called "Enable UEFI boot". I tried enabling it, nothing changed at all (in other words, no problems arise).

  • Work Laptop with Corporate Image and Network Magic 5.5 Pro

I am unable to print from her vpn because when Network Magic installed and I was able to discover the printer at home, which is setup for network sharing across my house, it went into the registry of her laptop and saw it as a network printer, but since it is not located on her Work Network, it will not print her documents from VPN.  Outside of VPN, can print wirelessly without any issues.  I have all pass throughs setup on the Router For VPN and I figure its a corporate image issue.  She has rights to install local printers to her laptop, however, the printer I have, and the way they have the USB configured on her laptop, it will not install the device when the USB is plug in, to install locally, hence the network setup.  I have a LexMark X4530 all in one and when I plug into her USB Connection, the Laptop comes back with an error that does not recognize the USB.

    Hi jeffreywerner,
VPN? Is your Lexmark X4530, a Wireless Printer? Her Laptop may have rights to install an USB Printer, but if the Printer has a USB 2.0 High-Speed Port and the Laptop doesn't support USB 2.0, then you / she isn't going to be able to install that printer on that Laptop.
But the workaround, is to use a Print Server or buy a new Wireless Printer.

  • [half-solved] Firefox won't open GtkFileChooserDialog

    Hey,
i have a rather strange problem: In Firefox i can't open the "Save File" dialogue. Whether it's in Preferences -> General -> Browse (to change the Download directory) or just rightclicking any link and trying to save it - no dice. The download folder is set to Desktop (can't change it) and even though that directory exists and when set to save files automatically, Firefox will not save/download files.
    Effectively, i can't download.
GtkFileChooserDialog shows up fine in any other application, including Chromium.
I can't tell you much about how this happened. I set up the system about a week ago and i have an almost 1:1 identical installation on my laptop where i don't have this issue:
Identical .mozilla folder, theme and gtk configuration, mime configuration, file browser, almost all the same packages, really.
The only differences might be some files in $HOME (though not .mozilla), i've had that partition for years. Though, again, most important config files are shared between the laptop and the PC and i have already deleted the .cache and any firefox related files as well as started firefox in safe-mode. FFS. The PC also uses ATI Catalyst drivers but i doubt that's related.
    WM is Awesome 3.4.
    Any idea what's going on?
    Cheers
    P.S.:
I've found out that setting "browser.folder.downloadList" (in about:config) to 2 (integer) fixes this problem. But it's very shaky, when i try to change the directory in the Preferences it will revert back to "browser.folder.downloadList 0" and the problem reoccurs. So, i won't mark this solved just yet but this a workaround for now. Still don't know why or what exactly is happening.
Last edited by demian (2013-11-30 11:32:35)

Try using Mozilla's Firefox build and see if it still happens.
Also try switching to the open-source ATI drivers instead of Catalyst. Despite your doubt it *may* be the issue.

  • Print only drivers for windows xp

Does HP or anyone else have print-only drivers for the photosmart 1215 or deskjet 3915 printers?
I tried to install two printers on my laptop and it has been a disaster!

Honestly yes, I've installed the chipset
I've got it from MSI, for A215-S7422 the chipset is M690V as mentioned on Specification.
There are 4 variants for this type, but I am not sure it's for Notebooks. I think it's for PC-Desktop.
    For your information,
It work unproperly. Some keyboard button doesn't work at all, e.g : Fn+Brightness ; Fn+Mute; Fn+Display Mode; etc.
You said "But is this really important if all your devices are working properly?"
I say : not to really important, but I like a perfect one and normal condition.
Please, waiting for your advice Master.

  • HP LaserJet P1102w will only print wirelessly if I turn the printer off and on again

I have 2 Laserjet P1102w that work fine printing through USB.  However, I was hoping this printer could become the standard wireless printer for individual users in the office.  I have setup 2 different printers wirelessly with their own static, reserved IP addresses and they are connected to our wireless access point (WPA).  We have  all laptops that are connected to the network via the same access point as well as through hard wired ethernet.  In all cases, they are on the same subnet.
Once I connect any laptop to one of these printers wirelessly through either the "smart install" client or the latest regular installation exe off of HP's site, it will print fine initially.  However, whenever I undock the laptop or even just wait a few hours, the connection will be lost and I cannot print.  The queue just says "Error - Printing" when I print sometihng.  No errors in the logs.  The connection will come back if I turn off the printer and turn it back on.  This is very annoying and will probably not be acceptable to the users.
So I wanted to do more testing and connected both printers to my laptop wirelessly and made sure they could print successfully.  I opened 2 command windows and ran a ping -t on each IP address to see at what point the connection dies.  The ping will reply until I undock and go from hard wired / wireless to just wireless.. then it will say "Destination unreachable" and I can't even access the web interface. Even if I redock to hard wired / wireless, I still can't print unless I restart the printer.
This happens on 2 different laptops with 2 different p1102w printers.  Any clue as to what's going on here and how I can fix it?
    Edit:
If I have both wireless and nic enabled, once I undock the laptop, the ping -t changes from replying to the ip of the printer, to replying to the address of the wireless adapter with "Destination host unreachable".
    For example:
    IP of printer: 192.168.2.95
IP of wireless adapter on laptop: 192.168.2.25
    ping 192.168.5.95
    Reply from 192.168.2.95
    Reply from 192.168.2.95
    *undock"
Reply from 192.168.2.25 Destination Host Unreachable
Reply from 192.168.2.25 Destination Host Unreachable
This does not happen if I disabled the nic and run only off the wireless card.  So the workarounds are to either turn the printer off and back on if I undock every time, or disabled the nic.
At this point, I just want to understand why it is like this?

Mowaffaq, you may want to determine whether you are making those changes in the master printing preferences (versus the adjusting the session printing preferences from within your application).
Click "Start", click "Printers and Faxes" (or "Devices and Printers"), right-click your printer, and select "Printing Preferences". On the "Paper/Quality" tab, you should be able to specify A4 as your default paper for all future print jobs.
    Hope that helps.
