2 iPads, 1 Laptop, 2 iTunes accounts

I have just purchased an iPad 2 for my parents to use in assisted living.  I would like to have two iTunes accounts so I can manage their iPad but not sync my content with their device.  How can i set up two accounts on one laptop?  They will also need to install iTunes on their laptop.  I will do most of their tech support.  Thanks for any tips.

Hey Heidi14,
Thanks for the question. I understand you wish to manage multiple iPads with your computer. The following article suggests a few solutions, which may be helpful:

Did you select all of the music to sync by clicking on the playlists or albums or whatever you use in iTunes - in order for them to sync? Or did you click on Entire Music Library if you want all of your music on the iPad?

You can sync as many devices as you want to the same iTunes account, there is no limit. You can have the same content on each device or different content, the choice is yours. iTunes will keep everything straight, by device, including separate backups. I'd suggest giving each device a unique name, to make things easier.

How do I transfer the songs from my desktop to my iPad using the same iTunes account? I can only sync the other way. Thanks

    DaisyDoodle,
The songs on your Shuffle should still be in your iTunes library.  That means you should just be able to connect your Nano to the same iTunes library and sync it just as you would with your Shuffle. There is no limit to the number of iPods, iPads, or iPhones you can sync to one computer, iTunes library, or account.
As for preparing the Shuffle for your husband, just restore it via iTunes and then let him sync it to his own iTunes library or if its the same iTunes library, let him configure it to sync only his content.
Here are instructions on how to restore the Shuffle if need be.

  • Multiple iPads tied to an iTunes account

How can I tell which iPad downloaded an App when there are multiple iPads that share an iTunes account?
    Thanks!

    Hello drkeeling
Try turning off automatic downloads, that way when someone downloads something, you can see it on that device.

  • Can I transfer iPad apps from one iTunes account to another

Can I transfer iPad apps from one iTunes account to another?

No. Apps are associated with Apple ID with which they were purchased.

  • My wife and I both have iPads and two separate iTunes accounts, and do NOT want to share apps

My wife and I share one MacBook. We both each have an iPad and we each have our own indvidual iTunes accounts. That is we have two separate individual iPads and two separate iTunes accounts. I do not want her apps on my iPad, and she does not want my apps on her iPad.
When my wife tries to update her apps on her iPad, it shows my user ID and requests my password. It does not even give her an option to put in her own iTunes account ID and password. This happens even though she is clearly logged in on her iPad under Settings --> Store with her own iTunes account, and have the same setup on my iPad (my own user ID and password for my iTunes account). I do not have this problem on my iPad.
How do we keep our apps separate? This is very annoying!
    Thanks!

There's info here on setting up separate libraries and user accounts. You won't have to reload (or re-import) all the music, just copy it.
The reason I suggest separate accounts on the Mac is because if you have the two libraries under the same user account, iTunes will also open the last library that was open in that account, and you'll always have to be mindful of which library that is. If you open iTunes and find it's not your library, you'll have quit, relaunch holding the option key and select the other library.
No, you won't have to log in and out of the Mac. (If I'm understanding your question here.) Multiple accounts can be logged in at the same time. And with fast user switching, you can toggle between user accounts.
I'll admit that maintaining the two libraries gets a little tricky, because if you share all the same music, you'll have to add it to one and update the other. (That won't happen automatically.) But I think Home Sharing makes this much easier to do.
    Hope that helps!

  • Can I backup two iPhones to the same laptop and iTunes account?

Is it possible to backup and sync an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 3Gs to the same laptop and iTunes account?  My wife and I both have iPhones.  Her laptop just crashed, so we only have one laptop to use as a back up / sync now.

Yes, iTunes will maintain separate backups for each device. Note, however, ALL iTunes content, presently on your wife's phone will be erased when you first sync it to your computer. So, you need to get all of that content into your iTunes library first. Read here about your choices for managing multiple devices on one computer:

Is it possible to load an IPAD from two different ITune accounts?  When I try it says it'll delete all the other account first.

    This is correct.
Ipad wilol sync itunes content and pics with one and only one computer at a time.  Syncing to another will erase the current content.

  • HT4847 Can I have multiple users's family devices backed up to the cloud e.g. 2 iPhones and 2 iPads under the same iTunes account

Just got a second iPad for the home.
Can I have multiple users's family devices backed up to the cloud e.g. 2 iPhones and 2 iPads under the same iTunes account?

Yes, but it's not usually recommended to share an iCloud account within a family.  If you do, any data you sync with iCloud will be merged and you, for example, will end up with each other's contacts and calendars on your devices.  Also, any action taken on one device (such as adding or deleting a contact) will be replicated on the other devices.  You will also all be sharing the same 5GB of free storage for all your data and device backups.
Normally it's best to use separate iCloud accounts for each person's devices.  This will keep your data separated, and allow each person to have their own free 5GB of storage.  You can continue to share the same iTunes ID within the family; the ID you use for iCloud does not need to be the same as the one your use for iTunes purchasing.  (Each person should also use a separate ID on their devices for iMessage and FaceTime to avoid getting each other's text messages and FaceTime calls.)

  • We have two ipads and two different itunes accounts, can I sync my wife's apps and she mine?

we have two ipads and two different itunes accounts. can I sync my wife's apps and she mine?

Yes, you can use the apps from both accounts on the same iPad. You will both need to authorize each others iTunes account for use in each others computer account. You may authorize up to five Macs/PCs to use stuff from your account and that computer can then transfer the stuff to up to 10 iOS devices.
Open iTunes in your account and have your wife sign into her iTunes account in the iTunes app. First authorize your computer account to use her iTunes stuff from the iTunes Store menu. Then have your wife download all of the iOS apps that you want to use into iTunes. Now you do the same in her computer account.
Remember that only you can update apps acquired with your iTunes account and vice versa. So you will need to either sign into iTunes on the computer or directly on each others iPad to update any apps that need it. It is a little confusing at first, but you get the hang of it quickly.

  • 2 iPads, one computer, one iTunes account

I have ordered an iPad for myself as well as one for my wife. Can we both use the same laptop/iTunes account to sync both of them?

I don't think you will like using the same itunes account but maybe. I have a household w/2 people & 2 iphones and my ipod. We have our own itunes accts b/c if not, each time one of us synced, it would wipe out our device and put on whatever was in the library at the time of the sync. So, if you and your wife like different styles of music, or want different apps, etc, it will be better to have 2 itunes accounts.
What I learned from someone on the iphone board was to set up 2 different log ins for you my computer. My laptop is running vista and 2 logins what was we already had anyway, so no big deal. Then I was able to keep my itunes library on my login and my roommate's on their login. Thus, when either one of us syncs our devices we keep our settings, contacts, apps, etc.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can I have two ipads use the same itunes account on 2 computers?

I just purchased a new iPad for my wife.  I currently have an iPad 2 with a ton of apps.  I;d like to be able to have her use the apps that I've already purchased, but still allow her the ability to sync the new iPad to her computer.  Can i do this?

Problem. You can't share apps or purchased content between two different iTunes accounts. The iPad(s) will be completely resynched (removing apps not associated with the current account) each time you synch, depending on how you synch. IMHO, not worth the effort.
