2 iphones, 1 mac and 1 gmail account

My wife and I both have iphones and we also have an iMac. We have 1 "family" gmail account. I like the use of Gmail IMAP and how it "syncs" the emails on all the devices. But I would like to turn this option off? What happens is when my wife marks an email as read I don't end up seeing that message, and vice-versa.
What can I do? Is there a way to turn off the syncing? can I access gmail with POP?

You can't turn syncing off for server stored mailboxes with an IMAP account. If your wife reads an email with her iPhone, the message will be marked as read when checking the account's Inbox mailbox with your iPhone, and vice-versa.
Accessing an account as a POP account with one email client and as an IMAP account with another email client may work, but can also lead to potential problems.
Why not get your own Gmail account and have separate accounts?

  • My iMac won't Accept My AOL Account and Gmail Account

For some reason my iMac won't accept new emails from my AOL and Gmail accounts which was weird since it was able to yesterday. I read from one of the post on the Apple community threads that I could delete the accounts on the Account section in Preferences and just reenter them which I tried to do but I can't reenter the AOL account because it's saying it can't "verify" the account/password (And I know that I didn't put down the wrong password) and it'll accept the Google account but it won't accept the Gmail part.
Now I have a Mail app on my iMac that won't accept my AOL or Gmail accounts and I don't know what to do. So far my iPhone doesn't have a problem with reading emails and I can still look at the emails through the websites but I want to be able to use the Mail app)

    Hi sierra42,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your iMac. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact verification message you are receiving. If it is regarding verification of the outgoing mail server, you may find the information and steps outlined in the following article helpful:

You don’t need to do that. Click here and follow the instructions, or if they don't cover the type of adware on the computer, these ones. If you're willing to download software to resolve this issue(you don't need to, but may find it easier), you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.

got an anti virus that thinks it should scan email. Turn that function off.
Have a firewall, check that Thunderbird has full internet access, not some Auto rubbish that somehow fails.

  • TS4002 my mailboxes on my Mac are freaking out, I cannot shut them and they just keep the little wheel spinning. I am able to access my Yahoo and Gmail accounts via web browser but the mail system seems to be frozen.

I am having difficulty with my mail function on my MacBook Pro. The mail function is not shutting down and continues to try and access the mail accounts that I have set up in Yahoo and Gmail. Now I am unable to close the application. I forced a close last night when I powered down.
I can access my Gmail and Yahoo through web browsers.

    Hello OP8,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Hotmail and Gmail accounts won't send mail.

Have added and deleted and re-added two Hotmail accounts(as IMAP) and 3 Gmail accounts and all will receive emails but none of them will send?
No idea what I'm doing wrong! Any help would be great.
    Thanks!

    John Burnes,
Port 25 may not work on some WiFi hotspots or the EDGE network, or may only send to some recipients but not others. Many email providers will also set up their SMTP servers to listen for authenticated connections on either port 465 or 587.
For example, .Mac does this because many consumer internet providers filter or block port 25 traffic:

O2 offers their only relay service that you setup with them.

  • Issues with Mail and SMTP and Gmail Accounts

So this isn't a question....more like a solution that I had to figure out.
We have multiple gmail accounts in our family and after upgrading to OSC Yosemite our gmail accounts wen't haywire.  My wife was sending emails that eventually were sent from my gmail account (mass neighborhood emails at that.....and all replies came to me instead of her).  I spent about 2 hours investigating and put together several different threads that finally fixed out problem.  The root of the issue is that you can share the same Incoming Mail Server for all of your gmail accounts and your mail will go to the accounts that it is supposed to go to, but you have to have individual Outgoing Mail Servers for each of your accounts otherwise all outgoing mail will come from one account only.  I don't know why this happened, it is a pain in the butt, but here's how I fixed it with 3 gmail accounts running through 1 mac.
1st - you need to remove all of your gmail accounts from mail via Internet Accounts in Settings. Just highlight the account and hit the minus sign at the bottom.  You won't lose anything if you have your gmail settings set to default which backs everything up to Google's servers....it will all load back to you mac and it will all be available online at gmail.com
2nd - you need to add back all of your accounts one at a time (and follow all of the following steps for each account before adding another).  Select the plus sign and choose Google (for gmail accounts only).
3rd - Give your gmail account a recognizable name in the "Name" field (if you have multiple Gmail accounts to add, you will want to distinguish between them).
4th - type in your username ([email protected]) and password.  Make sure to add the suffix @gmail.com.
5th - Check the boxes that you want to add to your mac (mail, contacts, calendars, messages, notes).
6th - Click the "Details" button to ensure that you have an adequate description (see # 3 above) if you are going to have multiple gmail accounts to add.
7th - Open the Mail app.
8th - From Mail Preferences/Account Information Tab - make sure that you account is Enabled (check box next to "Enable Account", make sure that you have an adequate description name, email address is correct, Incoming mail server is imap.gmail.com, Username is your normal gmail login username (absent any suffix like .gmail.com), password is your gmail password.
9th - Then, from Preferences click on the Advanced tab and....Uncheck "Automatically detect and maintain account settings".
10th - Then, go back to Account Information Tab and.....from the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) dropdown box, select Edit SMTP List....
11th -  You need to create an individual SMTP Server Account for each gmail account that you plan to add.
12th - To do this click the plus button.  Server Name should always be smtp.gmail.com.  Type in your own Description (I recommend naming it after the gmail account that you plan to attach it to).
13th - TLS Certificate should be "None"
14th - Click the Advanced Tab - From here, uncheck the box for "Automatically detect and maintain account settings".  Then make sure Port is 587 (default is 25 for some ungodly reason).  Check the box for "Use SSL".
15th - Set authentication to "Password".  User name MUST contain a suffice (i.e [email protected]).  Password is your normal gmail password.
    16th - Click OK.
17th - Now your back at Preferences/Account Information - Link your account to the SMTP server that you just created by using the dropdown box next to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP).
18th - Save all changes and close out of Mail App.
19th - Restart Mail and recheck steps 8-15....for some reason my passwords kept getting erased, but they eventually saved and took.
20th - Add another gmail account by following these steps and then recheck all along the way for passwords, suffixes, everything.  You will want to make sure that your accounts are all properly linked to their respective Outgoing Mail Servers (hence the distinct naming descriptions).
21st - Once you have added multiple accounts send email between them to make sure that they are being sent from and received to the correct accounts.

Wow! Oh my goodness Patrick, thank you so much man. That's a ton of informatiion to take the time to write out step by step and share with strangers.  I really, really am grateful to you.  I've been dealing with this for a month, half the month I kept changing my passwords and kept assuming I was making some mistake.  It used to work fine.  About a week ago I started looking for a solution and couldn't find one that worked.
You have changed that sir!  I'm good to go, stress level will lower when I am on my Mac, and I'm so glad to not have all these messages popping back up that I was done with!
Muchos Gracias Amigo!  Owe you one...

  • HT204053 I have different iCloud IDs for my iPhone &Mac and I have 5GB on each, if I decide to use only 1 ID for both, can I have 10GB or will I be limited to 5 since it's 1 iCloud ID.

I have different iCloud IDs for my iPhone &Mac and I have 5GB on each, if I decide to use only 1 ID for both, can I have 10GB or will I be limited to 5 since it's 1 iCloud ID. I am afraid that if I I use only 1 iCloud ID for both of them I will be limited to only 5GB which is small a nd I don't have money to be paying annually for extra GB. Thanks and waiting for your replies.

The free 5GB allowance is per account, not per device.
If you back up to iTunes, 5 GB should be more than enough for the average user.

  • HT1277 When I delete email from my actual hotmail, yahoo and gmail accounts online, it does not delete from my MacBook Pro Mail accounts that I created for hotmail, yahoo, gmail. I thought sync'ing these accounts would do this. Please help :-)

MacBook Pro 13.3/2.3/2X2GB/320/SD-USA with Mac OS X v10.5
I've set up my Mac - Mail with my yahoo, gmail and hotmail accounts and can successfully send and receive mail. However, when I go online to my actual yahoo, gmail and hotmail accounts to delete unwanted emails or to move those emails into subfolders, my Mac - Mail is not updated. How do I do this?
Also, if you can help show me how to view my hotmail folders in Mac - Mail, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks!!
    Tessy

Is it POP or IMAP? - see Mail/Preferences/Accounts - highlight an account and see what the Type is.
Try Mail/'menu bar'/Mailbox/'Take All Accounts Online'

  • Trouble with bcc and gmail account

Whenever I send an email from my gmail account on my iPhone, I get a copy in my inbox on my iPhone, but not my gmail. I thought it might just be mail.app, but I checked gmail webmail, and I get nothing there. I do have the "Always BCC myself" ON, so it should be getting to my gmail. Can anyone help?

This is a commonly known glitch in Gmail that has to do with gmail's message threading. It happens on some other phones as well.
Turning on "Recent mode" in your gmail account options on your phone may help.

  • Sync Outlook 2011 for mac and gmail agenda

    Hello,
I have problem when I try to synchronize outlook 2011 calendar and gmail agenda.
I do it by synchronizing outlook 2011 (for mac) calendar with iCal and after I synchronize iCal with google agenda.
When I create a new category for exemple project under outlook and add event to this category, it creates a new calendar project under iCal in the "On my Mac" header. that's ok.
When I create a new calendar named project under google agenda, I can add it under iCal in the "google" header. that's ok.
but thuis two calendar (on my mac and in google header) are'nt synchronized in iCal even if they have the same name.
Do you know a mean to synchronize the calendar ? thanks in advance

two ways of doing this, you could try http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2452489, or drag each individual calendar event into iCal. You can't do multiple items has to be one... at... a... time.

  • TS3276 Why is the Mail app mixing up my Yahoo and Gmail accounts? I am receiving mail in each account that appears to have "crossed over" from the other account.

I have Mail set up with 2 different accounts (1 Yahoo and 1 Gmail). I am missing messages in my Yahoo account that all of a sudden appear in my Gmail account. I thought Mail was suppose to keep these accounts separate. There is nothing to connect the 2 accounts. (I am not accidentaly sending out e-mails using the wrong account) Is there anything I can do to fix this? Thank you!

Have you done this: Mail  >>  Preferences  >>  Accounts  >>  Accountinformation  >>  uncheck gmail Account 2.
Or remove gmail Account 2 at all from the MacBook by clicking on the minus sign.

  • Emails bonced back by .mac and .me accounts

I have a pop3 account through a third party server but use apple mail as my email client- any emails I send to a .mac or .me account are being bounced back with a general failure notice. It even happens from my iphone. Is that the .mac server seeing my email as spam? Is there any thing on my end I can do? What can my client that have .mac or .me do on their end to let me in?

    I'm experiencing the same problem!

  • Clarification with Google Sync and Gmail account

I recently linked my gmail account to my phone and prior to this i was using google sync to link my google calendar and phone calendar. After adding my gmail i began to get multiple contacts and calandar entries...Does anyone know why?

    Hello,
Currently, the BIS system provides for the wireless synchronization of Calendar and Contacts with Google, with no need to synchronize via USB tether via the Desktop Software. So, if you have activated this new BIS feature AND also have some other channel for loading that information to your BB, that would indeed result in duplication. You will need to shut one or the other off and just have one channel for synchronizing that data.
    Good luck!
