2 iphones using 1 iTunes account - iCloud transition?

My wife and I use the same iTunes account for both of our iPhones. I am concerned about what will happen when iCloud is launched.
Will the contacts, calendars, bookmarks, email accounts etc all merge, or will one of us lose our data? I don't think it will be possible to have different settings on different devices any more.
We both share the same user account on our computer too.
Think this is going to get messy!

Your iTunes account and iCloud are two different things. When iCloud launches, just have two separate accounts - one for you and one for your wife. When you create an iCloud account, all the info from Address Book, iCal, and Safari will be associated with that account (assuming that you're using a Mac). The only trouble I can see is that both of you are using one user account on the computer. I advise you to create a separate user account for you or your wife and separate the contacts, calendars, and bookmarks into the respective accounts.

  • I have activated 2 iPhones using my iTunes account, but I now would like to take one iPhone off this account, and start its own iTunes "pairing" in order to back up, without cross syncing between purchases, how can I do this?

I have activated 2 iPhones using ONE iTunes account, but I would now like to remove one iPhone from the account and add it to a new iTunes account. This is so that I can back it up without cross syncing between purchases/apps on both iPhones.
Whats the best method for this?
    I'm running Windows 7
    Many thanks

Whenever a menu choice is grayed out, that is because you have Restrictions turned on in Settings.  Be sure to turn it off.
You are confusing an itunes store account with an icloud account.  You two can continue using the same ID for itunes (thus sharing purchased music, apps, etc.), but you really should have separate accounts (different IDs) for icloud, since an account is intended for one user to keep his/her devices in sync.
To create a new icloud account, go to
    http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
Then go to Settings>icloud and scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Delete Account.  (have restrictions turned off)  That will disconnect the device from the account but will not delete data in icloud or other devices.  Then sign in using the new ID.

How to update software on multiple iPhones using same iTunes account?

Here are more details on my situation which should help clarify things...
I purchased three iPhone 4 models back when they first came out (for my family) that all share the same iTunes account for access to apps and music, but each phone/user still has his/her custom contact list, email accts, and select lists of apps and music from the one iTunes acct library.  The problem is (as I understand it) that I can only update the software on one of the three iPhones – the primary phone I used to setup the iTunes acct without wiping out the separate contact lists, etc. As it stands today... the first (primary) iPhone associated with the iTune acct has been updated with the latest software version 5.1.1 and sync'd up with all the apps, music, etc from the one iTune acct, while the other two iPhones are still running on the original software version 4.0.2 and are experiencing problems now. I was advised by AT&T back in January that it would be necessary to setup separate iTunes accts for the second and third iPhones in order to receive system updates and still be able to manage separate contact lists, etc. If I go this route, I assume we will lose all the apps on phones #2 and #3 that we have been "sharing"... correct? Since this AT&T advice was prior to iCloud coming out, would iCloud be a better solution or at least part of the solution? I really don't yet understand how iCloud works. Hopefully, one of you can help me??
we have 2 iphone 4's synced to the same itunes account for apps and music since the day we bought them, but each has a different icloud acct. they have both been updated on the same itunes account with every update that has come out since we bought them in december of 2010. nothing on either phone has ever been lost or duplicated. having said all that, maybe i'm missing something here, but we have had no problems. we do have itunes setup to sync manually. i do believe i'm a piker compared to lawrence finch, but i'm just telling you what happens in my house. maybe check with apple? is there a store near you?

  • Updating iphone using shared itunes account

Recently I updated both my husband and my iphone4's to new software using my itunes account.  My iphone updated succesfully, but when his was finished all of my contacts are now on his phone, as well as my text messages, and pictures.  NONE of his pictures, contacts, or text messages are on his phone anymore.  Please tell me that I didnt lose all of my husbands contact numbers for work. EEK!

Before iTunes updated his phone, it should have automatically created a backup with his info. You need to restore his phone using that backup file.
I assume you two share the same iTunes account. So, when you get his phone restored, and you are asked to set up iCloud on it, don't log in with your common iTunes account, but select to create a new free ID and choose the new @me account open.
That way, you can both share apps and music, but your contacts, calendars, notes, photostream etc. will sync separately and won't interfere with each other.

  • Multiple iphones using one itunes account

I'm fairly new to the itunes world and was wondering about the ability to sync multiple iphones to a single itunes account. I have the iphone 4s and have it synced with my itunes account...my boyfriend recently left the dark ages and is now using my old iphone 3gs, unfortunately he doesn't have a computer or access to the internet way out in tim-buck-two. We were curious as to whether or not he could use my computer with itunes already downloaded on here...of course he would have his own apple ID. Will he be able to have access to all my playlists and music so he can use my music as well? I sure would appreciate any help anyone can give me!

This is great news as I've been struggling with this issue for some time. Mainly because my wife is a little old school and likes to put music on CD's and this solves that problem. Thanks again!!

  • HT204053 The entire family has used one itunes account for years. How do we all set up separate iCloud accounts now?

The entire family has used one itunes account for years. How do we all set up separate iCloud accounts now? Or should we? 5 macbooks, 2 ipads, 4 iphones, 2 itouch, 2 imacs.   How does one decide what to sync, share and what not to? Green Jeans.

You need to start by understanding the distinction between iTunes and iCloud - Apple confuse the issue by referring to 'iTunes Match' as part of iCloud. It isn't.
You don't have to have the same login (Apple ID) for iTunes and iCloud; many people don't and there's no problem about it.
Your iCloud ID gets you email, calendars, contacts, iWork documents and PhotoStream syncing between devices.
Your iTunes ID gets you the iTunes Store, the App Store for iOS, the Mac App Store for OSX,, 'iTunes in the Cloud' (downloading of purchased items to any logged-in device) and 'iTunes Match' (uploading of songs not purchased in the iTunes Store).
Your family members can easily each get their own iCloud account to keep email etc. separate - in each case they will need a different non-Apple email address (a free one from Yahoo etc. would do) to set up the ID. If they are sharing a Mac they need to be using a separate user account.
They can have their own iCloud accounts and still all sign into the same iTunes account: or they can open their own iTunes accounts using their new iCloud Apple IDs.
BUT they cannot transfer items purchased under the present iTunes ID to different iTunes IDs.

  • How do I use my iTunes account w/ iCloud and leave my MobileMe subscription intact?

I use several Mac applications that integrate with MobileMe, so I'd like to keep my MobileMe account intact (NOT move to iCloud) so I can continue to use this functionality until those apps are updated to support iCloud.
I am hoping there's a way I can use my iTunes account for iCloud (I already set up iCloud backups on my iPhone and iPad with this account) while leaving my MobileMe account as a MobileMe account.
Here's the rub: when I go to System Preferences > iCloud, all I see is a message telling me to "first move your MobileMe account", which I don't want to do.

Nothing to do with iCloud, sign in to your iTunes account on your Mac, in iTunes.

  • Hi my partner used my email address and iTunes account to set up his iPhone and now both our phones have merged! Does anyone know how to separate these? Can he still use our iTunes account with a different Id or email! Please help!!

HI my partner used my apple id and email address when setting up his iPhone so when he turned on iCloud our phones merged!! How do we undo this? Can he still use my iTunes account with a different Id and can he change the email on his phone without losing information? Also iPad is linked too, the family uses this and I would like to keep my phone separate! At the moment nothing is sacred! Please help! We are not very good with computers!!

Several things here so let me attempt to clarify.
For iCloud the reason the contacts where removed from he other device is because you updated your contacts, in this case deleted them, and then iCloud updated the other device to match. By deleting the iCloud account on the device it will stop the device from using that iCloud account and therefore nothing will change on the other device. By using a seperate Apple ID you can still use the features of iCloud, Find My iPhone comes to mind, without your content (contacts, message etc.) merging with the other device
For iTunes, you cannot use two Apple IDs for one account however if you use the same account iTunes on your computer will keep the content on each device seperate very nicely. You can also configure the settings for iTunes and the App store on each device to keep the content from automatically downloading to the other device. What I meant by share apps and music is this. What happens if you find a game, lets say Minecraft, that you really like and it cost, as Mincraft cost, $6.99USD. You buy it and play for a while and then you realize that your husband really likes the game as well. If you both use the same Apple ID for iTunes he can download the $7.00ish game to his device at no additional charge. If you use seperate Apple IDs for iTunes well... it look like he will also be paying for the game to have it on his account. Same goes for Music and Movies
I hope that clears things up. Let me know if you have anymore question.

New to Apple products (finally) - can I use my Itunes account with multiple products e.g. Iphone and Ipad?

Oh yes! Apple will be happy for you to buy as many Apple products as you can afford.
As and when needed, each can be given its own selections of content to sync with.

I have 2 iphones on one itunes account. I just upgraded both to ios 8 and now the messages i receive come through to both phones when they used to be separated. What is going on here?

I noticed the same problem after upgrading a few iPhones to IOS 8, all use the same Apple ID.  However, I now notice when I go into Message and instead of selecting a person from my contact list, I start typing their name which brings up a list of people, some of which are not in my contact list and are on one of the other iPhones. There's a circle/exclamation point next to the name which I click on, and one of the options is to "Remove from Recent". How did these names get from one phone to another and how do I remove all "recents"? They do not appear in my contact list. Anyone see this?
