2 ipods on one laptop....help

Well I returned my shuffle for another like customer support said. In my second ipod. Almost got it working. Here is my question. My son uses an ipod mini on his laptop.
I'm trying to get my shufflr working on it too. Now I get the message can't write to ipod. I've restored it about 50 times with and without the old versions. QUESTION:: my son has the same name as mine. If I register my shufflr with the exact same name as my son has his mini registered as...will that confuse i-tunes??? Also, my shuffle after restored shows 300kb used and 970MB free...is that normal for a restored shuffle...Thanks , almost there

Actually, it won't confuse iTunes. iTunes uses a UUID or similar (which would look like a bunch of random characters to you) to identify iPods. The "name" you give it is a cosmetic thing that has no effect on how iTunes uses the iPod.
The only exception is that you can't "rename" the iPod in Mac OS X while copying files to it because the "name" is used as the mountpoint and you can't rename a mountpoint while it's busy.

  • 2 IPODS one Laptop help

    Hi There
I have two IPODS running off the same ITUNES. I have tried manually updating them (as we both want different music) but it doesn't seem to work. Any help?
We tried to have 2 ITUNES on the same laptop but they just keep overwriting each other and we lose music, even when they are saved in different places.

When the iPods belong to two users, there are a couple of recommended methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Method one is to have individual Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. Each iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists.
Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library.
Have a look at this article and see what you think and go for whichever you feel suits your needs best: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Choosing the update option "automatically update selected playlists only" (called Sync Music - Selected playlists in iTunes 7) allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your iPod ( for example, around 3700MB for a 4GB or 1800MB for a 2GB Mini or Nano). You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Manual updating is another option that should work, I'm not sure what problems you are having with it but it should be possible to set one or both of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod

  • HT202213 how do i install a second ipod on one laptop and have it sync with only my music

I have my son's ipod on my laptop and when he plugged it in it auto sync and made all the changes to music, games, etc.  I recently purchased an ipod for myself and went and purchased some songs.  However it downloaded the songs into my son's playlist.  How do I set up my own account so when I plug in my ipod it does the same as his plus allow me to download my own music.

Easiest is to just check the media yo want synced vice syncing the entire library.

  • Syncing multiple Ipods to one laptop

How do I sync my 3 kids Ipods with only one laptop? It seems unreasonable to have a unique laptop for every Ipod in the house. We have 5 Ipods total, with 2 laptops. I need to find a way to put songs on my kid's ipods without having to "erase" the content that's on there now. Thoughts?
    Thanks.

  • Putting 3 ipods on one computer, help!!!

I already have my ipod nano on my computer, and it works fine. How do I get my other two daughter's ipod nano's on my computer. My daughter already registered and downloaded songs on itunes, but it does not have her name under devices, and I cannot and do not know how to get the music to her ipod. It does not automatically go on hers, but only mine, please help me, I have been trying since before christmas!!!

If I'm reading your information correctly, your daughter's ipod is not showing up under devices in itunes. If the ipod is not seen in iTunes or by your computer, then you can not put music onto the iPod. The following links are troubleshooting steps. The first is for the iPod seen by the computer, but not in iTunes.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60950
Then 2nd link is for the iPod not being seen in My Computer.

If you have a 1st generation ipod and your daughter has a newer iPod, you will have to update your iTunes to 7.0.2 version. That can be downloaded (if necessary), at www.apple.com/itunes/download.

  • How do I merge multiple ipod libraries on one laptop?

We have over 5 ipods in the family and need to sync all their content to one library on one laptop.  Every time I plug in an ipod to the laptop, it will only show that ipod's library.  I have tried to merge the libraries, but end up losing songs/apps/etc.  At present, for example, I can see many apps in the iTunes library, but they will not sync with the ipod that is plugged in.  Thanks for any help.

Only two ways currently - the latest versions of iPhoto and of Aperature (which can nopen current iPhoto libraries and can merge libraries) or the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -

  • How can I manage 2 iPods and an iPhone from one laptop?

I have replaced my laptop, upgraded my phone to an iPhone, replaced a broken iPod screen that was broken within the first month of purchase from Apple direct and Apple has not been any help in assisting me with getting all of this syncronized.  I cannot even get access to a PERSON one time to set this all up.
I have changed my passwords so many times that one of the iPods (the NEWEST VERSION) has been out of use for over 4 months!  I am so disgusted with all of this.  We are sharing music we don't even like because we cannot listen to our own music.  It was never this difficult with our old mp3 devices!
Is there anyone who can help me???
I have a mentally handicapped 20 year old grandson that loves his iPod.  It was one of his Christmas gifts last year and it was damaged when he dropped it on the school bus last winter.  I had to pay almost $100 to have the screen replaced, but could not afford to do it until this past spring. By then I had forgotten his passwords and had to set up a new email.  Then, my computer had to be replaced and we were without internet for some time.  By the time we needed the password again, I could not locate it.  Now I have to start over!  This seems to be only a problem with Apple.  He has a Kindle Fire and we do not have this problem with Amazon.
My husband is a painting contractor.  I thought I was doing him a great favor by giving him an iPod as a gift.  But that has also been a disaster.  He can't listen to his music because I cannot separate his music files from our master file. I wish I had just bought him a new mp3 player instead of an iPod.
PLEASE HELP!!!    DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO REACH A REP FROM APPLE???
...LIKE A LIVE PERSON???  I DON'T LIVE NEAR A CITY. I'M IN RURAL SOUTHERN OHIO.

  • I tried to install ios7 last night and the screen is now on itunes with the usb symbols  Plugged the ipod into the laptop where itunes is stored.  Tried to restore only to be advised that a 3194 error has occured  cannot get any further please help!!

Hi  I tried to install ios7 last night and the ipod touch now has a frozen screen with the itunes logo and the usb logo  I plugged the ipod into my laptop and tried to restore only to be met with the message 3194 error  cannot restore this ipod  please help thanks

Hi. The two user tips both describe a sequence of steps that should get your library from the point where it threatens to wipe data from your device to where it is syncing normally, while recovering as much information as possible. It may still be necessary to wipe and reload the device but this should only take place once all the data that can be recovered has been recovered.
Doing step 1 of 8 and then complaining things aren't the way you want them to be yet strikes me as premature...
Since you appear to have all your media content, and we are discussing an iPod classic, not an iOS device, the main worries are already taken care of. What's left is ratings, playcounts, playlist membership and checked status. Since your device holds only part of your library at best you could only recover the missing data for the content that is on the device using third party tools.
Recreating the previous checked/unchecked status of every track in your library from where you are now may not be that easy. Syncing with selected playlists has many advantages, one of which would have been that you would have a named playlist that could have been retrieved by 3rd party software if you had used this method.
You haven't explained what caused your problem in the first place, but if you have a Previous iTunes Libraries folder holding old copies of your iTunes database (generated with each iTunes update) then it would be possible to restore the most recent of these and then update the library with any changes in your media folder.
BTW Apple doesn't offer free support for this kind of issue with iTunes.

I HAVE 2 HARD DRIVES ON MY LAPTOP. MY PHOTOS ARE ON 1 HARD DRIVE & MY ITUNES IS ON ANOTHER HARD DRIVE. I AM HAVING TROUBLE SYNCING THE PHOTOS FROM THE SEPERATE HARD DRIVE ONTO MY IPOD TOUCH. ANY HELP?

There is a whole lot of bad going on there.
There are problems both drive errors and USB errors.  I don't believe it.
I have a hunch the drive is starving for power.
USB devices are supposed to function all the way down to 4.25V.  Not all do.
USB ports are supposed to be able to deliver 4.25V at the end of the cable at 500mA.  Not all do.
USB 2.0 devices are not supposed to draw more than 100mA unless they negotiate for more.  Some violate that.
USB 2.0 devices are never supposed to draw more than 500mA. Some violate that.  Especially disk drives.
My guess is that your drive is drawing excess current and the voltage drop through the port and cable are dropping you below 4.25; or at least below the voltage that your drive goes "Tango Uniform"[1].   Does your drive have the option for external power?  If so try it.  Following up on wtx's comment;  USB 3.0 is capable of delivering more power.   Also, some drives have used a cable that violates just about every aspect of the USB specification:  A "Y" cable that plugs into two host ports to provide more power to the guest.  I despise this solution with every fiber of my electrical engineering existence; never-the-less, you might try one.

You can recover purchases by installing the latest version of iTunes to your laptop, then select the 'purchases' tab under Store in the sidebar and look at the lower left of the iTunes window for a link to: 'Download Previous Purchases'
