2 issues :  No effects + saving changes renders photo and thumbnail black

I have iphoto6 - when I edit a photo, I have no effects available (sepia, B&W, etc.) - the preview boxes for the effects are simply gone, although I do have the image in the center square of the effects window (the original).
Worse, when I save any edits, the new photo is simply all black. Revert original works to bring back the original, fortunately.
I have tried doing all of the file restructuring/reconstruction stuff (alt-command upon start-up) but that has not done any good.
Any help will be appreciated!

Close iPhoto. Use the Finder to navigate to Macintosh HD/ Users/ (your user name)/ Library/ Preferences/ com.apple.iPhoto.plist and move that file to the Trash. You'll have to reset your iPhoto Preferences back to your liking. That should bring the effects pane back onscreen. I don't know if it will correct the black edits. Post back if it does not.
Regards.

Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

  • Photo and thumbnail missing

I have some old photos that are showing up black, (this happened to them a few versions ago). Is there a way to recover these photos, all the information seems to be ok, just no image.

I also just upgraded to iPhoto 9.1.2 and have OS X 10.6.7.
I found this thread because I am missing about a month's worth of photos.  Specifically, the last major upload I did from my camera before I did the iPhoto upgrade.  (Where it asked if it's ok to update the iPhoto database, making it incompatible with older versions of iPhoto.)
Anyways, I am missing the photos and thumbnails.  If I go to iPhoto and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original, it tries to pull up Time Machine.
If I just use Finder to search on the missing photos by file name(I can display the photo meta tags, along with the event names such as my daughter's 5th birthday) then Finder will show the file, with correct date, but as soon as I click on it, it launches iPhoto, and it jumps to a different picture with the same file name (but taken on a
    different date)
Now get this, this is really bizarre.  Back toiPhoto.  If I scroll slowly through the missing photos, I just see the empty box instead of thumbnails.  But if I scroll quickly, it flashes the thumbnail of the correct photos, but as the scrolling stops, the thumbnails turn back to empty boxes.  For example, I can see the images of my daughter's 5th birthday flash by as I scroll through photos quickly, but as soon as I stop scrolling, the thumbnails and photos are back to their missing status.
When I first upgraded to iPhoto 9.1.2, I noticed that certain cropped photos I had were missing.  And the currently missing photos were displayed fine.  (At least, the thumbnails were...)  It was only after I kept on clicking around on the missing cropped photos, trying to display the meta tags and additional info, trying to open up the full size pictures and scroll through the photos, that I noticed that suddenly about a month's worth of photos were no longer visible.
I have not yet reverted my iPhoto via Time Machine, but I figured I'd ask around before doing so.
Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Preview 'saving changes' takes forever and then crashes!!!!! What should I do?

I Have searched everywhere for answers to no avail. If there's no help to make this 'saving changes 'thing to stop when I'm working with pdf can someone suggest another pdf reader as good or better than preview for me? I need one that uses little memory. Adobe reader seems to be very choppy and sluggish for me. I've got 8gb RAM And I use Mac OSXlatest update 10.9 on a brand new MBP retina. Thanks. Other things I've done so far... I have unchecked the iCloud document and files so I don't save anything to iCloud. Somebody help with this. Thanks

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Spry Slide Show-how to use one size photo for large photo and thumbnail?

    Hi all,
I'm am using Adobe's Spry Slide Show. I can only use one size photo 640x480px for both the large photo and the thumbnail.
I changed the size of the small thumnail on the html:
                     <li><a href="Photos/TestPhoto640x480.jpg" width="490" height="367"><img src="Photos/TestPhoto640x480.jpg" width="63" height="47" alt="photos-1.jpg" /></a></li>
The thumbnail looks fine until you hit Live View or Preview in Browser then photo comes in full size and you can only see the upper left hand corner.
I assume that the java is doing this. But I have no training in Java.
How can I change the Java Code so the thumbnail comes in at 63x47px?
    Many thanks.

Wish I could use scaled down versions of the thumbnails-but I can't.
    Why not?
        img.src = info.src;
        img.style.width =  "490px";<!--Large Photo size on internet-changed from info.width + "px"; to "490px";  *********-->
        img.style.height =  "368px";<!--Large Photo size on internet-changed from info.height + "px"; to "368px";  *******-->
You're shooting yourself in the foot with this.  It's overriding your HTML and CSS  values.
As an FYI, Adobe Abandoned the Spry framework late last year.

  • Most recent photos and thumbnails appear corrupted

a little complex this one.  Recently had the hard drive replaced following seagate problem.  Restored from hard drive.  IPhoto11 9.2.3 All photos and albums appeared to be ther in the thumbmails.  when clicked on recent photos (NB old ones still OK) the picture came up from the thumbnail and then when clicked to edit it went out of focus.  Then the portrait thumbnails came up into fullscreen but when I clicked on the landscape thumbnails the triangle and exclamation mark appeared -NB same camera same time photos.  Following a previous discussion I downloaded IPhioto manager and rebuilt the library.  When I did the thumbnails are now just grey squares but only the most recent ones all old ones are still fine.  when I click on the grey thumnbail to open in full screen the triangle and exclamation  mark appears but the system still tries to do face recognition on the grey square.  All a little challenging to understand - any help welcome

What do you mean it "restored itself". It can't do that. User interaction is required to initiate that.
Did you not have a recent backup of it? If not, then the data is gone.

  • Issues with FCE4: saving, filters, rendering...

    Hello, all -
I'm just learning this application, and I can't figure out if I'm doing something wrong or if my software is acting up... but I can't save. "Save" is grayed out, and hitting command-S does nothing. Yet, if I try to quit the application it tells me I have unsaved changes. This is issue #1.
Issue #2: I can't apply any filters all of a sudden. They won't drag and drop. I have no idea why.
Issue #3: This is more of a general FCE4 annoyance: why can't I preview my edits without rendering them? Seems really absurd to have to render every time I want to see how my project is coming along. I assume I'm doing something wrong, but for the life of me I can't figure out what.
    Thanks!

    1. Yes
    2. Okay... I'll look into it.
    3. I don't know how to answer either of those questions. I'm pretty much a novice with FCE4. I've used iMovie since it first came out, and the recent (horrible) redesign has forced me into FCE4... so I'm really back to square one.
    I appreciate the help. Thanks.

  • HT204655 Any issues if I want to remove Photos and just go back to using iPhoto?

Not liking Photos at all. Any issues with deleting this app and just going back to using iPhoto?

If you have iPhoto 9.6.1 in your application folder, open it and use it.
I fear that support for iPhoto has ceased, but you can use it as long as you can.

  • .Mac Web Gallery - How to change key photo and order or galleries?

How can I choose which photo is the key photo for each .Mac web gallery? Also, how can I re-arrange the order of the web galleries?

I would really love to see a solution for this too ! Unfortunately I think apple just didn't implement it in Aperture. My .Mac web gallery is about events in my life and it doesn't make any sense to have it sorted alphabetically...
Not being able to simply set a key photo is really annoying too.
The worst is that these two functions are available in iPhoto. All they had to do was copy and paste...
    Apple are you listening ?

  • Why when I use a picture on my ipad air as wallpaper, I changed the photo and comprehensive?

I like to put my photos wallpaper. I'm using iphone. and my iphone 4s no cellular me this problem. but in my ipad air does. I like to have a solution for this complication.

First step in troubleshooting is to reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • If you log into a different App Store account, will that change the photos and videos on the device?

I have an ipod touch 5, and I want to switch App Store accounts. But I don't want to lose my pictures. Are these systems separate (will the pictures be unaffected if I switch App Store accounts)?

    Note:
    - Apps are locked to the account that purchased them.
    - To update apps you have to sign into the account that purchased the apps. If you have apps that need updating purchased from more than one account you have to update them one at a time until the remaining apps were purchased from one account.

  • Deleted photo and thumbnail still shows up in album view and camera roll

Hi, whenever i delete a photo on either my ipad(2) or iphone(4s), the thumbnail of the deleted photo still shows up in the album view and camera roll.
Also, a picture that i deleted months ago (have saved other photos since then, and replaced the thumbnail) from my ipad randomly showed up in the album view and camera roll??
I have IOS 5.0.1 installed on both iphone(4s) and ipad(2).
Is this a software glitch or??
    thanks

Sounds like a damaged database fie:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Slideshow in CS4 does then does not show photos and thumbnails

When I create a  slideshow in Firewords CS4 and DO NOT move any photos or enter any  captions, it displays fine.
    http://photos.abelson.com/israel/TEST/
When  I re open the slide show and move photos up and down create captions,  the generator gives me blank thumbnails and blank photos.  http://photos.abelson.com/israel/
    Anyone have any thoughts?

    Not sure what you mean...
I am not sure if I closed and re opened the project.
I DID click on CREATE a second time, since I had made changes.

  • Blurry Photos and Thumbnails

    I have two problems:
    1) Photos that I view in iPhoto that are on my camera, but have not been imported seem very blurry. Once I import the photos they look normal. Why?
    2) I prefer to email thumbnails instead of the picture, or at least a smaller version of the picture but I cannot figure out how to do it. Can anyone help?

    Ashley
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    1. Because iPhoto is using the icons/previews that your camera creates and these are geared to your camera screen, which is a mite smaller than your Mac’s screen, I’ll bet. When iPhoto imports the pics it makes its own thumbnails.
    2. What do you use for email? If you use Apple’s Mail you can resize the pics in the New Message Window
Or if you use some other Mail client, then export the pics using the File -> Export command and you can re-size the pics in the resulting dialogue.
    As general info:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Photos and thumbnails not in synch

I have deleted photos, but their thumbnail still shows up. Also, other deleted photos show up but there is no thumbnail under "Event" for the event.
It seems that deleted photos are not in synch with their thumbnails. is there a way to resynchronize the index file?

download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  and use its rebuild command - this creates a totally new library so if you are not happy with it you can just go back to the current one
