2 iTunes librarys

My old PC was hit by lightning and is out of comission. I can't get anything off it. I downloaded the latest version of iTunes to my new PC but when I hook the iPod up to it I get asked the following: iPod is synced w/ another iTunes library. Can only synce w/ 1 library at a time what would you like to do? a)Erase & Sync - replase contents of iPod w/ contents of iTunes or b) Transfer & Purchase - copies iTunes store purchase this computer is authorized to play from iPod to iTunes library.
I select B b/c I don't want to loose what is on my iPod and it asks me to Authorize the computer which I do and nothing happens. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

somebody help us. I too have this same problem. telling me i have two library's when i am signing in as the same person same email and it even showed me my balance in the itunes store. So why it thinks their are two accounts. They are making this hard for people that get new computers. I am not deleting all the music I have on my ipod.

In other words, no. You don't need another iTunes Library for your new iPod
Another iTunes Library, that's only if someone elses music is mixed in with yours and you want to create another Windows user account with their music in it.
The iTunes Library is the master vault containing all your content, from there you create playlists or smart playlists specially tailored for the smaller iPod's storage requirements.
For instance if the iPod can hold only 2,000 songs, then you create a smart playlist based upon those rules/limitation. Plus what type of music you like.
You have a incredible degree of control with smart playlists, they update automatically so you only set the conditions for what goes into them. Including content from other created playlists and smart playlists.
Then, when you hook up the smaller iPod, it has it's own sync options, "all of your music and playlists" or "only select playlists"  So you use the second option to select just the smart playlist you tailored for the new iPod.
When you hook up the iPod Classic, only it's sync options are used, not the new iPod ones.
I hope I explained it better this time.

  • Can I have 2 iTunes librarys?

Can I have 2 iTunes librarys and change between them i.e. one for tunes only stored on my Powerbook for use when I'm out and about and one for tunes that I have stored on a large external hard drive which I connect up to when at home?

You can do that with the help of iTunes Library Manager.

  • 2 computers 1 Iphone 2 different Itunes librarys

I want to know how to get 2 different Itunes Librarys on to the same Iphone, Or transfer some of the songs on to the original computer.

You copy the music to the computer you want to sync with. The iPhone can only sync (or manually manage) media with one itunes library at a time.
As for how to copy the music form one computer to another, that's a little outside the scope of this forum. You can use a thumb drive, copy it over a network, burn it to CD's, etc...

  • How To Sync 2 Windows PC's Running Mirrored iTunes Librarys

    Here's the setup:
Apple TV fed by a Windows 7 64bit PC running iTunes with the library residing on this machine we'll call "Server".
I run a script to mirror all the content of the Server library to a second Windows 7 64bit PC we'll call "HTPC". So both boxes have identical librarys.
Server is the main feed to the Apple TV.
HTPC is a redundant box that serves as a storage backup and should Server go down can be called into service to deliver content to the Apple TV.
My challenge is that when I watch a movie from the Server that movie stills shows as "Unwatched" on the backup box HTPC as it should.  I would like my script to also copy over the metadata so that I have an "EXACT" mirror of the Server residing on the HTPC box.
I'm just unsure what those files are or if they're hidden by iTunes.
My reasoning is that should hardware or software fail on my main Server box, I can just boot up the HTPC and it will stream to my Apple TV until I find time to fix the Server.
I love redundancy.  But I want the HTPC to be an exact mirror of the Server in terms of watched / unwatched status and art so I don't have to manually work with iTunes on the HTPC which is just a backup iTunes box.
Thanks for your review and responses.

  • Having 2 iTunes librarys on one computer

is it possible? my sister just purchased a iPod and I really don't want her using the same library as me to store her music as she's a rather messy/clumbsy person. is it possible to have 2 librarys on one comp?

When the iPods belong to two users, there are a couple of recommended methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Method one is to have individual Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. Each iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists.
Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library.
Another option when using a single library is to set one or both of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod

  • Can there be two itunes librarys on the one computer?

I am giving my PC to my parents and we will share it for a few months until I get myself a laptop. Both my mother and I have ipods and we both have separate itunes libraries. Is it possible to have both the separate libraries on the one computer - I guess under our separate user names and it not interfere with each others library? Will opening itunes under our separate usernames bring up the correct libaray?
    Thanks

Yes you can have more than one library. The simplest thing is to have two separate user accounts then things are kept entirely separate:

  • New Laptop, clean start, except iTunes librarys, what news for iPhone?!

    Hi,
I have a new MacBook Pro coming my way (very excited) a nice upgrade from my 3YO work horse iBook!
So, i want to start again, with regards to a 'clean' install. But i want to keep a couple of things like iPhoto and iTunes libraries.
    A couple of questions then.
    1) The first is actually pre-move over. In that i use 2 iTunes libraries, 1 for my laptop (with small number of songs) and one with an external drive (for all my music). I have only plugged my iPhone onto my laptop one. What happens if i plug into the other one by mistake?
    2) When i move laptops, i know i need to copy the library folders from the music folder, to the new music folder, and also copy across the pref file. But what should i do about the iPhone? Will it be as seamless?
    3) Any other tips and ideas to make my move as painless as possible!
    Thanks
    JJ

You need to authorize your new computer with your iTunes account with iTunes. You also need to de-authorize your computer that is going back with your iTunes account with iTunes.
iTunes does not store photos. iTunes stores iTunes content only - music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and 3rd party apps, and serves as the sync/transfer content for iTunes content - contacts, calendar events and Safari bookmarks with the supported applications on your computer, and for photos stored on your computer.
You need to transfer all photos from your work computer to your new computer as with all other data that you will need or want to transfer to your new computer.
The easiest way to transfer your entire iTunes library including playlists, play counts, etc. is be transferring the iTunes named folder located in your Music folder from your work computer to your new computer. If you have access to an external drive with enough storage capacity to store your entire iTunes library or iTunes folder, you can use that for the transfer, or you can network the computers together in some fashion. With iTunes quit on your new computer, place the iTunes named folder copied from the Music folder on your old computer in the Music folder on the new computer. Launch iTunes on the new computer and it will be identical to iTunes on your work computer.

  • Transferring iTunes librarys between computers.

Hey I just got a new Macbook Pro and I transferred all my music and iTunes stuff to it, but when I transferred everything over all my song's playcounts were erased. I used My top 25 most played smart playlist a lot and now it's useless. All the information used to be on my mom's pc. Is there any way I could get that information off of that computer onto this one?

That's basically what I did. I used a external hard drive and just copied/paste the whole music folder from the pc to my new computer.
    Which "whole music folder"?
Was it \My Music\ folder which contains an iTunes folder or \iTunes music\ folder, which is in \My Music\iTunes\ folder?
The playcount is stored in the \My Music\iTunes\iTunes library.itl file.
Does the iTunes Music Library.xml file have anything to do with it?
iTunes creates this file only fro opther applications to access iTunes library.
Not sure if playcount is in this file but it can be imported into iTunes.
If you do import it, it will duplicate all your playlists.

    Hi Guys,
sorry this is going to be such a long post but I typed all this out for an apple tech e.mail and they have referred me here. I don't want to type it all again so I've cut it from my original message. In addition to the info below to be clear, I have un-installed and re-installed a couple of times to try and resolve the issue but it's not worked. The machine seems rock solid playingDVD's and the same media files in windows media player.
I can only think it has something to do with the way in which I have transferred my library (Unless it is a hardware fault but It seems stable doing everything else!) I've also deleted all the previous iTunes librarys that came when I ported my files across to the new machine. I'm lost, hope you can help. I think the key is in the event log error messages but I'm not tech enough to understand what I'm being told. Sorry.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I have just transferred my iTunes library from one pc to a new one which will be used as our house media PC. I did this via a network switch.
After downloading iTunes and insytalling i have added my library by "File/Add folder to library" and selected iTunes music folder.
iTunes store works ok but if I try and browse my music collection after 3 or 4 mouse clicks in iTunes library mode the software switches my PC off. The machine is stable under all other applications, it is only in the library that this problem occurs. The shutdown has no warning, it's much like the plug has been pulled.
i have checked the event log and the following messages are present after every crash. Oddly, windows does not detect the crash and the PC re-starts without any blue screens, warnings or prompting for safe mode.

iTunes and this library is still functioning on the original PC without a hitch. The library does include 5 albums I bought and downloaded from iTunes, I tried authorising the PC incase it was related but it still crashes.
I assume it must be something to do with the library transfer or the way i have done it. i have not yet mated my ipod with the new machine, is this relevant?
Two other errors relating to iTunes show up in the event log which I will paste below however, iTunes has cause the PC to crash bothe before, and after these events.
    This:
