2 Legitimate Unlocking Questions

I'm traveling abroad this summer (Greece, Israel, and Turkey) and need voice/data access while I'm there.  I live in the U.S. and would love to take my iPhone with me but naturally can't because AT&T refuses to unlock it due to it being under contract.  Well, I have an older iPhone 4 that they approved the unlock on.  All I have to do is go home tonight an resore it to unlock it.  Great!  I should have an unlocked phone for my trip!  I'll buy a prepaid SIM card in each country and be all set.
My first question is:  OS 7.0.4 is on it now, and I assume that 7.1 will be installed when I restore to unlock tonight.  However, if I install a future version of the OS (say 7.2 for example), with my iPhone remain unlocked, or will it lock again thereby forcing me to stay at 7.1 forever? The iPhone was purchased by myself from Apple in the U.S. for use with AT&T and has never been jailbroken.
My second/third/fourth question is:  I need a second one for my wife, but we don't have any more that are out of contract, so I'm considering buying an unlocked one on ebay.  Assuming that it is unlocked as advertised, but I wasn't the original owner, will I be able to restore it in iTunes thereby making myself the owner and still keep it unlocked?  Can I update the OS and keep it unlocked?  If it was jailbroken before I owned it, then will it lock itself as I try to update or restore the OS?  Does it matter if it was originally sold in a country other than the U.S?
Thank you very much for any information you can provide.
Jim

1) If your iPhone has been officially unlocked by the carrier, then it will remain unlocked through any restore or upgrade.
2) It depends entirely on the honesty of the seller. If the iPhone is truly and officially unlocked, and if it was either never set up to Find My iPhone or the seller removes it and so removes Activation Lock, then yes, you should be able to restore the iPhone to factory settings and set it up as new. Both are big "if"s, though. Many sellers lie about those factors to the sorrow of the purchaser.
If it was jailbroken before I owned it, then will it lock itself as I try to update or restore the OS?
If it was jailbroken to unlock it, then it absolutely will relock to the original carrier.
Does it matter if it was originally sold in a country other than the U.S?
It certainly does when it comes to getting any sort of service from Apple. They will not in the US provide any support for an iPhone sold in another country.
I would strongly advise against buying a used iPhone when you don't know the seller and can't inspect the iPhone prior to buying it.
Regards.

  • IPhone 4 Factory Unlocked Question

I just Factory Unlocked my wife's iPhone 4 tonight from AT&T.  I think my wife plans on using her iPhone 4 on another GSM provider like T Mobile or something. After iTunes told me congratulations your iPhone is now Factory Unlocked I have a simple question.
Before I did all this I did Restore and Backup and now it is asking me if I want to Set Up as New iPhone OR Restore from iTunes Backup.
What are the pros and cons in either option?
If I restore from iTunes Backup will it restore it to AT&T or can my wife still use her iPhone 4 on T Mobile?
Or in order to use it on T Mobile do I have to Set Up as New iPhone?
I want to do the right thing.  If anyone has an answer to my question and is willing to share I would be most grateful

    Thanks for the response Dave.
I looked at Apple's warranty for iPhone: http://images.apple.com/legal/warranty/docs/070808iphoneWarranty.pdf
It does say Apple may limit service to the country where it was originally purchased:
+Apple may restrict service to the country where Apple or its authorized distributors originally sold the hardware product, and provide warranty service at an Apple Retail or AASP location, where service is performed at the location, or the Apple Retail or AASP may send the product to an Apple repair service location for service+
    It also says this:
+You may be responsible for shipping and handling charges if the product cannot be serviced in the country in which service is requested. If you seek service in a country that is not the country of original purchase, you will comply with all applicable export laws and regulations and be responsible for all custom duties, V.A.T. and other associated taxes and charges. Where international service is available, Apple may repair or exchange defective products and parts with comparable products and parts that comply with local standards.+
It does not specifically say that Apple won't service my iPhone here but it does provide Apple a leeway to make that decision.
I guess if Apple won't service it here, they will have to service it in Singapore.

    You're welcome.
    FYI:
When I unlocked my 4S, I didn't use a different sim. After I got notice from my carrier, I connected my phone, iTunes running & performed a sync. This created a current backup. I then hit the restore button on the Summary Pane...this restores the phone as a new device. At the end, I got the "Congratulations" screen. I then immediately restored from the backup I created when I started. Followed that by syncing my content back to the phone. That's all I had to do.

  • Iphone 4s unlock question

    Hi,
I bought my iphone4s in Nov.2011 and I am available to upgrade it in Jul.2013 . My question is can I unlock my iphone4s without verizon service after upgrading? And can I unlock my new device immediately after upgrading?

so ive tried following the instructions & ive taken the orginal sim card out when restoring/downloading
    in itunes after its finished.
it list the device as "iPhone"
it shows in the main window...
"there is no SIM card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to activate"
"please disconnect and insert a SIM card in the iPhone"
can anyone confirm if this phone is unlocked now without me puttting in a different sim card from a different carrier?

  • Apple replacement unlocking question

I recently got given a replacement phone from Apple for one that had a smashed screen and decided that I would give this to my partner as a gift.
However, she is on a different network than me and even though I thought all Apple iPhone's were unlocked when refurbished, she cannot get her sim card to work.
Does anyone know if apple unlock the phones they give to you as replacements and if not, do they unlock them for you?

If the phone is locked to a carrier, only the carrier can unlock the phone.
If it is unlocked maybe it needs activating in iTunes.

  • Another unlock question

I am using CS5 on my Mac. I working on modifying my website that I originally contracted out to build.I also am not contracted with my original ISP, so my site is not up on the web. I cannot contact the original designer and the ISP is no help.
At this point, I can modify any of the content, but am unable to modify/add to any of the links, nor am I able to remove the web hosting and design tag line. When I move the cursor over these areas, I get the circle with the slash across it.
I have read through the "unlock" threads and have checked off the following problems/suggestions:
My computer is the only one in use. No network - no check in/out
All my information from my old hard drive was transferred to my new, larger hard drive. I do not have any access issues that I know of.
I have read/write access to the root folder, the public folder, and all pages, including the template, contained in these folders (File>Get Info>Sharing & Permissions>Me>Read and Write Access).
I don't understand the master page unlocking in preview mode thread, but it is related to CS4. Maybe it doesn't apply to CS5. I remember seeing something about Site>Manage Sites>Local Info>uncheck Enable Cache, but am not sure what that will do.
What else can I do to unlock the locked areas of each page so I can get my site back up on the web?
    Thanks in advance.

@Julie - don't worry about it.  Detaching pages from templates is not something you want to do hastily.  It is important to think through the consequences.  In this case, detaching all those pages would mean lots of tedious work to get them back reattached to any template.  Now, if you have decided *not* to use templates at all, then go for it.  Otherwise, the best thing to do would be to either try to find the original template on the site, or to recreate it (the former may be a lost cause if the template was never uploaded - the latter is a snap, provided none of the advanced template functionality was used on the template).
The recreation of a template is a piece o'cake.
    1.  Backup your site.
    2.  Close all open files.
    3.  Make a duplicate of the some child file
    3.  Select this duplicate file in the file list.
    4.  Do a find and replace in this CLOSED selected file for each of the
following (the file must be closed for this to work) -
    Find -
    <!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/your_template_name.dwt"
    codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
    Replace -
    with nothing
    i.e., delete it.
    Find -
    <!-- InstanceEnd -->
    Replace -
    with nothing
    i.e., delete it
    Find -
    <!-- Instance
    Replace -
    <!-- Template
You now have a template file.  Rename it to 'template.dwt' and move it to
    the Templates folder.
Now you can open it and edit out the contents in the editable regions before
    saving it again.
    Simple?  Yeah....

  • Iphone 4s unlocking question

i have iphone4s, was blocked by swisscom. and till now i was using jailbreake with jevey. 5.1... ( living in portugal now )  now they  ( swisscom company) allowed the unlock of all devices. i did the syncr with my pc and its working fine without jevey.should i update the software to 6.1 ?
    thanks

Yeah. You can safely update if your phone is unlocked by swisscom. But you cannot update to 6.1. Since the latest version is 6.1.3, you should update to it.

  • Another 3gs unlock question????

I just rang orange to request an unlock for my 3gs and they told me to visit the apple website and request an unlock there as aplle are apparently the only ones who can do it. So i have looked and i cannot find this on the apple website.
Can someone post a link to this or is the woman from orange having me on?
Either way how do unlock the bloody thing?

If things work like on O2 there should be able to register for an unlock and pay orange.
Orange sent your phone serial number into Apple. Once it gets registered as an unlocked phone at apple it will unlock automatically the next time you sync with itunes.
It is up to orange to get the ball rolling by sending Apple permission to release the phone. To unlock your phone all you will need to do is call our Customer Service team on 150 from your Orange phone, or 07973 100150 from any other mobile or landline or 450 (07973 100450) if the phone has been used with a pay as you go SIM. Unlocking generally takes between 7 and 10 days.
    Good luck.

  • Another Iphone 3g Unlock question

To cut a long story short, I bought My partner an iphone 3g off ebay, fully legal and above board, locked to orange, We have now moved to an area with zero Orange coverage, I have spent 4 months trying to get this unlocked, I have been told by Orange that as the phone is registered to the lady I bought it from, nobody can unlock it apart from her, I have emailed her 4 times and no responce? anybody know of a way I can get this done, other than jailbreaking it? I have even tried to buy an unlock off ebay & they refunded me as they could not do it?
All I want to do is legally unlock my Iphone 3g which I legally bought and now own so that my partner can receive phone calls, surely it should not be that hard to do?
    Any help would be apretiated!
(Im upgrading in march and she can have my iphone4 but untill then I just want a cheap and cheerfull iphone to work for her!
Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this!
    All the best,
    Regards,
    Rich

There is nothing you can do other than appeal to Orange. They have sole authority to authorize an unlock. The purchase may have been completely legal, but Orange is under no obligation to unlock it for you.
If you'd acted sooner, you could possibly have returned it for a refund based on the phone not being suitable for the purpose for which it was sold. Now, it's probably a little late.
I'd say sell it and get one from an AUTHORIZED vendor.

  • Gamers Club Unlocked Question

I'm thinking about purchasing gamers club unlock but I wanted to get things clear here. So your saying we get 20% of new games and the minimum is up to 3 games. So let's say I buy a $60 game does that mean I will only have to pay $48?

    Hello JayRich,
I like the way you are thinking.  If you are going to be buying games over the next two years you'll love the perks!  Unlocked members receive 20% off all new games (excluding digital downloads), so a $60 title would be $48 + tax.  There is no limit to how many games you can buy with this discount, but you can only purchase three of the same title using your discount.
In addition to this, you receive 10% off used games.  If you trade in your games at your local Best Buy store you get double points for every dollar value traded in as well as a 10% bonus on the trade-in value.

  • MOVED: NF750-G55 core unlocking question

This topic has been moved to Overclockers & Modding Corner.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=131625.0

Normally such a question would seem dumb, but when it comes to overclocking a core i7 it seems that less RAM can actually be better.
But how limiting is the RAM on your overclock?  Essentially what Im asking is which would give me the better performance: keeping the setup as it is and overclocking as far as possible, or selling 6GB of RAM in order to achieve a better overclock on the CPU and remaining RAM.
Here is my current system watercooled:
    i7 920  Rampage II Extreme  12GB Corsair Dominator DDR3  X-Fi Titanium  BFG H20 GTX 295 Quad-SLi  2x Intel X-25M G2 160GB  WD Black 2TB 64mb cache  CoolerMaster Real Power 1250W PSU  Windows 7 Ultimate x64
EDIT: That should, of course, say 12GB in the title.

  • Official unlock question for apple

now that the iphone is no longer offered solely by AT&T, will they or will Apple allow owners of previous models to officially unlock their phones. I have a 3G that I want to gift to a relative that resides abroad, but they need it unlocked in order to use it. what are my options, kind folks?

This is a user-to-user forum - Apple doesn't participate here and we (users such as yourself) are not privy to unannounced Apple decisions.
That said, previously sold AT&T iPhones are covered by the agreements in force at the time of sale. The decision to officially unlock iPhones is solely up to AT&T, which has never unlocked any phones under any circumstances in the past. Don't hold your breath.
BTW, the AT&T phones are incompatible with the CDMA format Verizon network, even if unlocked.

  • Iphone unlocked question

If I buy an iPhone unlocked, will it come with a sim card?
If it does not, then can I put a activated micro sim-card inside it from my current AT&T phone?
Basically, I want to transfer a micro sim card from my current att phone onto my new iphone 4, I was just curious if that would work?
    Thanks in advance!

Unless you currently have an iPhone4, you do not have a MicroSIM.
The iPhone is the only phone sold in the US that uses the MicroSIM.  The iPad also uses a MicroSIM.

  • Unlocking question on iPhone 4

Hi, I just had my iphone unlocked by my carrier. I just completed a restore via itunes, and would like to know if I set it up with my original sim card, will it lock back to that or is it permanently unlocked ? Will my friend be able to insert his sim from another carrier and use it. Thanks

If it was officially unlocked by the carrier following this procedure:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5014
then it will remain unlocked permanently.
    Regards.

  • Just unlocked Blackberry Curve 8520 with online code, now cannot make calls or send sms! PLEASE HELP!

    Hi,
I unlocked my phone about an hour ago using a legitimate unlock code from unlocks.co.uk. I entered the code and it seemed to work fine and now my network shows up as Vodafone uk (I have unlocked it from T-Mobile)
It looks as though it is unlocked and I have checked the connections - I have signal and it says I am connected to the vodafone network, however, I cannot make any calls or send texts! If I try to call a number I get the call failed signed and the failed call dial tone. I tried to send a text but it didn't work - the text now has a red X and says 'unidentified subscriber'. I know this is a fault with my phone as the people I have tried to text and call have no problems with their phones/networks.
Please somebody help me! I have no idea what to do! I contacted the unlocking company and they say if I'm sure the sim I'm inserting is active (which I am) then it is likely my phone has been blacklisted, but I dont think it has. I bought it as a pay as you go handset from Argos just a week ago and it's been working fine until then.
I put my old t-mobile sim back in and it seems to work - does this mean it hasn't been unlocked successfully or not?
    Many thanks

Do a simple reboot on the BlackBerry in this manner: With the BlackBerry device POWERED ON, remove the battery for a minute, and then reinsert the battery to reboot. A reboot in this manner is prescribed for most glitches and operating system errors, and you will lose no data on the device doing this.
Then try your Vodafone SIM again.
