2 machines bent

Bent is an old military term btw. While trying to ready a customers computer, which was working perfectly, i had a problem on my computer. Now both machines doent work both are K8T2Master Far's. 1st machine no beeps no vid, tried differnt vid cards, no luck. machine is on though when power button on. tried clearing bios, still no vid.
2cd machine beeps 1, 1, 1, and starts again cant find @#$#$@$ beep codes for this
went thru same trouble shooting methods as above. Just in case i ordered 2 mb's to replace these. but i am running out of things to swap!!!!! I am in pc hell!!!!!

Bas,
I was curious as to what happens when you do that.  I'm running a QuadroFX1100 card, which has a standard 4pin HD power connection for the extra juice i guess it needs.
I was curious if that JPWR2 spot was for cards like my quadro,  As an alternative to using the standard HD power cable plugged directly to the video card itself you can use the 4-pin molex?  That's what I seemed to get from the manual anyways.  I'm way to nervous to touch anything inside the machine as it is working excellent.

  • Everytime I start time machine, my computer backs up +/- 250MB, then freezes.  Tried it with 3 different external drives, all stop at about the same point (they all work fine on other macs). Any suggestions?

The drives I have are Seagate 1TB GoFlex portable drives (one has UBS 3.0, the other USB 2.0), and a WesternDigital 1TB passport (USB 3.0).  I originally tried to backup with Time Machine using the Seagate USB 3.0, and when that didnt work, Seagate suggested maybe since my operating system is a little older, that I try with a USB 2.0, so they sent me another NEW external hard drive, with the USB 2.0.  Had the same issue.  Frustrated and convinced that Seagate just  sucked, I went and bought the 1TB WesternDigital passport (USB 3.0).  Have the exact same issue again.  Every drive was new, and formatted for mac.  When I started time machine it started to back up my files, but froze after copying give or take 250 MB (usually 252.5MB, to be exact).  I went and tried the drive on several other macs, and none of them presented any problems.  I also tried dragging individual files, but it still freezes on pretty much anything bigger than +/- 100MB.  Disk Utility says that all the drives are fine. Obviously this is a problem with my computer, and not the 3 brand new external drives.  I thought about upgrading to OSX 10.6, but don't know if this'll help or not (plus, I'd really prefer to have all the files backed up on a drive before doing that, just in case).  I dont know what else to do.. called apple, but I'm not about to pay them $50 to have them MAYBE give me a solution (done that twice now for previous unrelated issues, and each time they just told me to take it to a computer repair place.)  Just seeing if anyone out there has a solution before I cave and take it back to the certified computer guys for them to figure it out.. Also, I live in Montana and theres no apple store anywhere close (not suprising), so taking it to an Apple Store is just not an option.
Side note:  Seagate tech support is awesome; they tried everything to solve the problem, and they even bent their rules a little to send me a new drive, even though it wasn't a malfunction issue with their drive.  Really helpful, friendly people, which is much more than I can say for Apple at this point...

this is what you need to do to exclude everything apart from desktop.
on time machine preferences, click on Options
click plus sign, on the new window, click macintosh HD
do a Control + A then deselect users then click okay
go to options again, plus sign, go to users, control +A then deselect your user account
go to options again, plus sign, go to your user account, control + A, deselect desktop
    start the back up.

  • New (used) machine set-up using Migration Assistant

I have just purchased a mint G4 Powerbook 15” I need to set up to replace the existing one, which got its lids bent and seams cracked open from a fall onto the floor -- it is working fine for now but I am treating an implosion as inevitable.
I have done an erase and install on the new machine from my Tiger install disk, which is OS X v. 10.4.6. My existing Powerbook is running OS X v. 10.4.11, and all applications (like iTunes, Safari and Quicktunes) are the latest versions.
Question #1: Before running Migration Assistant from the old to the new, am I correct in assuming that I FIRST must update everything I can on the new computer, by running Software Update repeatedly, until it says everything is up-to-date?
Question #2: For all applications Software Update does not update, such as iPhoto, Firefox, AOL and Adobe Acrobat, am I correct in assuming that Migration Assistant will transfer them, their libraries and their full functionality, to the new machine, so I can pick up right where I left off?
Question #3: For all applications that Software Update DOES update (iTunes in particular), am I correct in assuming that Migration Assistant will also transfer THEIR libraries (and sub-files), to the new machine?

This question has been ANSWERED (by BDAqua) on a separate forum. See:

  • Straighten bent aluminum macbook pro case

    Hi there,
Basically, we dropped the macbook on the back left corner (by the power adapter) and bent the case. The bend is right at the ethernet port.
The computer works fine, but I'm concerned about the slight rubbing of the display against the body (when you open and close it). So I looked into a new upper bottom body but for $299 I thought, heck, its aluminum, maybe I can follow the directions (ifixit.com) and straighten out the bent parts.
Yes, I know it voids everything but it's the cheapest way to go (free except for tools) and seems reasonable.
Has anyone had any success in straightening out a bent Macbook case? Any tips/suggestions?
    Thanks

You voided your warranty when you dropped the machine, so you can't void it any farther by trying to bend it back. You'll never make it look right, but you may be able to eliminate or reduce the rubbing that concerns you.

  • Left side bent

I've bought my MBP 17", as soon as it came out, last year, but a friend of mine made me notice, today, that the left side (power/ethernet/firewire) side bent.
I'm really worried about, since it never dropped.
I have the applecare on it and will contact the support, tomorrow, for getting it changed but I'd like to understand how it could be.
Could it be because of the heat of the power?

There have been several reports here of MBPs that have been bent at their ethernet ports by picking them up one-handed on that side. The Ethernet port is the case's weakest point, because that's the largest hole in it, and the heavy stress applied to it when you pick the machine up while holding it flat with the display open is more than enough to bend the case around that port opening (and often to dent the speaker grille above it). It doesn't take a fall or a heavy impact to cause such damage — just thoughtless mishandling. It's user-caused damage just the same.
When picking the machine up with its display open, always use two hands on opposite sides, so unbalanced stresses aren't applied to it.

  • HT201250 time machine keeps shutting off

My time machine keeps shutting down.

    Shutting off is a problem..
Certainly check the cord.. pull it out of the TC and inspect the pins in the TC and the contacts inside the cord end.. unplug it for safety .. you are looking for burn marks where the contact hasn't been good. If all is good I really doubt cords are a major issue.. Apple supply good quality ones and other than a pet chewing on it or the cord being bent and handled a lot, which is unlikely with a TC.. it should be fine.
The A1409 is gen 4 and you have an early model which is great.
You need to use the v5 utility so you can see the logs. I am not sure what OS you run, but if you are on Lion download the utility.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
If you are on ML tell us and I can give instructions to install it.. it will not install simply due to the out of date installer.. not incompatibility.
Once you can access the logs you can see a bit more detail of what is happening and track it .. if it keeps dying see if it has popped up temperature warnings or any kind of indication of trouble.
Apple used a WD green drive in them.. certainly I have seen more dead drives lately than on any of the early models. I don't know how apple has the cheek to call the cheapest green drive on a market server grade.. but they do. A dead or dying drive can have all kinds of effects.
If you have the skills open it and inspect it.

  • H215 had a bent drivers CD in it. Who do I contact?

Who do I get in contact with about my drivers CD?
I just bought this machine about 2 days ago and I looked at the manual I noticed the drivers CD was bent in a curved shape. I looked on the website but it just sends me in circle. This is ridiculous, I just want to get the CD replaced because I just bought this machine brand new and my CD in it is bent.

    Hi mia813!
Lenovo support should be able to get you a new CD... if the system is running smoothly you might just want to wait for the driver download pages to appear.
    I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

  • Bent frame

Finally 1.83 has arrived. Compare to my old 1.5Ghz Albook, this one is beautiful and superb in every aspect! It's so nice and much better than I'd expect or even hoped!
...only, when I opened the lid, I immediately found part of aluminum casing (narrow part between screen and display) is bent... It doesn't seem to be a problem for operation, but the plate is just making a small mountain at about F9 key...
Can this be replaced at local Apple store? I mean, maybe in a few weeks, many Apple stores will have MBS (I locate NYC by the way), and I want to minimise the hussle of replacing (well, if they'll replace!). So, if I can just bring this machine to an Apple store and be replaced with another one. I got this via Apple online store.
I can possibly live with this tho... so if there's a relatively safe way to straighten the bent part, I may try it myself and avoid all the hussle of replecing at all...
Other than that, it's just gorgeous. There is the hum noise but it's very very very small and not annoying at all. Speaker does distort at the max volume but I think they sound not bad. Yes, they are laptop speakers but actually, I even think the sound is improved; at least they are much better than my old 1.5Ghz. One thing, I wasn't too impressed by the quality of iSight picture but maybe I need more light source get a better image. Speed is enough with stock 512MB so far (not doing anything heavy yet)

It is best to immediately contact Apple when you notice an imperfection right out of the box.
Apple makes it their policy not to repair cosmetic defects. Even those that the machine came with. In my conversations and dealings with them, they are more likely to indicate that you may have damaged it.
So, I would have called them the very minute I opened the box to complain about the defect. This is the only way you could prove to them that you may not have done it yourself.
If the delivery time is only a matter of minutes before your call, then the odds of you having broken it in that time are less likely.
But, if you wait a day or two to notify them of the problem, then they'll be more inclined to insist that you may have broken it.
I've only gotten them to fix one cosmetic problem (on new hardware). That one repair was made because I had called within the hour of my machine arriving. I insisted that they document the damage, and eventually got it repaired.
The local dealer said that Apple would not repair it (I had it to the dealer within an hour after my call to Apple for another problem).
But, after the dealer fixed the operational problem, he did eventually agree to order the replacement face-plate (front bezel on an iMac G5) since I had already gotten Apple to say they would.
So, when it comes to things that could be your word against their speculation, calling in immediately is always best.
If you have already had the machine for a day, you may already be on your own there. But, I would call right now (this minute), and check anyway. The sooner you call the better.
And, do not attempt a self-repair. If you modify the damage, it will be far more difficult to convince them that the damage was already there. For example, if it bends-up now, and you press down on it, you may get a "wave" that indicates tampering instead of manufacturer defect.
An additional consideration is your warranty. Apple has many times denied warranty repair to others (citing user damage from a drop as a suspected reason for failure). So, any dents or dings you allow to be present on the machine may later void your warranty if the tech thinks it may have been dropped.
I had a keyboard that cracked on it's own, and the Apple person insisted that I would have had to drop it for that to happen. But, the keyboard had always been tied to my desk with a very short amount of loose cable. So, it would be impossible for it to fall (since it couldn't move more than 2 inches). So, after some arguing, they agreed to let me take it to a dealer for visual inspection.
They told me that the dealer would have to rule on whether it was a user caused break or a failure in the plastic. I asked them how he would be able to determine such a thing, and he said he did not know. He just said that the dealer would have to decide what he thought. So, it leaves you in the hands of the persons best guess, and if they think it more likely you broke it or not.
Fortunately, this dealer has been to my house and seen how everything is kept (during on-site repairs). Otherwise, it would be unlikely to convince them that it really did just break on it's own. Sometimes things happen that really are not our fault.
Anyway, I hope this helps. Best of luck to you.

  • Bent Unibody Frame (on 17" MacBook Pro)

    Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone else has had an issue where their MacBook Pro has suffered from a bent frame right above the ethernet port on the back left hand side of their laptop. I had my laptop in my Axio bag which was in the trunk of my car, nothing fell on top of the bag. It took me about a day to realize that the frame was totally bent .
    Regards,
    pellmell

I agree that this particular bend doesn't look like something one could cause by picking the machine up one-handed. But I don't agree that bending the screen back too far could have caused it: I don't think the screen assembly is strong enough to have applied a force that could cause this. I think the screen would break loose from its hinge assembly first. My theory is that this damage was caused by a glancing blow to the corner of the machine from its underside, quite possibly while it was in its bag. But such speculation is neither here nor there: the damage is done, and the machine needs a new top case.
The lesson to take from this is that where the case metal is thinnest, it is also weakest, and the very thin aluminum membranes above and below the Ethernet port are the thinnest and weakest points of all. To keep the machine safe and intact, you must take special pains to make sure no untoward stresses are ever applied at those points, knowingly or accidentally, in transit or in daily use.

  • How can multiple users use the same Creative Cloud Individual on one single-machine?

We have one shared graphics workstation, which is infrequently in use by different people - therefore we bought a single-workstation license (which we were referred to "Creative Cloud Individual"). In the FAQs it says it installs locally, but whenever a user different from the installing adminstrator logs in, he is forced to use the trial.
Is there a way to make the local installation usable on that single machine for multiple users?
Thanks in advance for your reply

Serenatasystems do the other users not have administrator access?  What happens if they sign in using the Adobe ID tied to your Creative Cloud subscription?  Do your Adobe Creative applications then exit trial mode?

  • Cannot install windows 8.1 on imac 5k - apple support says "Correct, that machine can't install windows" Boot camp fail

I have a brand new imac 5k, with 4ghz i7, 295x GPU, 3.1TB fusion drive.  Bought the machine so I could dual boot - I need windows for VR Dev work.
I've spent the last week and a half on tech support calls with Apple Senior Tech agents, and Microsoft agents as well, and today have been told that indeed this machine cannot run windows 8.1.  Apparently Apple engineering knows about the issue, but says the problem is microsoft's.  Ugh.
The latest iteration of the issue comes when installing 8.1 onto an external thunderbolt SSD (without even using boot camp) - I go through the EFI installer, convert the drive to GPT, format it as ntfs, but when I select the partition to install onto, the installer says it can't find the partition it just created.  Smuh?
I've also tried the install through boot camp.  This installation actually worked twice, but the install was unstable.  After booting back into osX, then returning to Windows, the windows install went corrupt and couldn't be repaired.  Subsequent attempts to install windows yielded a flurry of different errors, including "windows doesn't support GPT in this mode" or "the disk is locked, please unlock the disk" or "MBR must be converted to GPT" (where once I converted to GPT, the drive could no longer be found, despite the operation completing successfully.)
At any rate, it's a huge mess.  I'd happily return the machine for a different config, but the company I bought it from will only swap it for a similar model -- so I've spent a pile on a machine that does not function as advertised; apple says "too bad, talk to Microsoft." Microsoft says "too bad, we've never seen this, this is an apple issue."
Has anyone out there gotten windows up and running on an iMac5k with fusion drive?  If so, did you have to go through a crazy maze to make it work?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    MC

    Michael Conelly wrote:
After much gnashing of teeth, and a half dozen support calls, I'd all but given up.  I finally seem to have solved this though - sort of - by installing windows 8.1 on boot camp on an older iMac, then cloning the bootcamp disk to an external thunderbolt drive via Winclone.  That worked seamlessly, sticking to winclone's instructions, and I can boot via EFI to Windows 8.1 on the new iMac.  So far so good.
I usually install W8.1 via EFI by using DU and a Free Space partition. The 3TB Fusion is first split into the underlying SSD/HDD physicals. OSX and Windows OSes are installed on SSD via EFI (no BCA). The OSX part and half the HDD are then used to create a new CS volume. The other HDD half becomes NTFS for non-Windows OS files. The Hybrid MBR method is completely unsatisfactory with the 3TB Fusion drive.
How is the TB/Winclone image for performance of the OS (since pagefile.sys is also on the TB)?

  • Iomega external hard drive either 'not found' by Time Machine or is now in 'read only' format

I don't know what's going on with my iomega external hard drive.  Sometimes the HD is recognised by the computer; other times it isn't; if it isn't I can restore to an earlier back up via Time Machine app; but it's like the disk isn't writable.
Ten days ago, I had trouble backing up my iMac using Time Machine.  After turning it off and restarting my external hard drive, it backed up successfully.
However, today I am trying to back up my files, and TM tells me it can't find the external hard drive.  Nothing has changed -- I have been out of town this past week -- but somehow my HD now seems to be in 'read only' format.  It does turn on, and I could restore my computer to an earlier back up.
"Mac OS X can't repair the disk.  You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk.  Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."
Annoyingly, despite my HD not showing in Finder or on my Desktop (as it usually does), when I simply turn it off I get that warning message "The disk was not ejected properly".
Have tried verifying and repairing using Disk Utility, to no avail.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.  I'm guessing this would wipe the disk clean and I'd have to create the initial back up image all over again -- I'm reluctant to do this since this HD is my only back up and if it all goes tits up I'll be up that famous creek without a paddle.
Thoughts, suggestions, input all welcome and deeply appreciated -- thank you!

It's possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app can fix it, but they're expensive (DiskWarrior is about $100), and there's no guarantee it can do it.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.
That will erase it.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #5.
It sounds very much like the disk is beginning to fail, although it's possible there's a bad port, cable, connection or power supply (if it has its own).
I'd suggest getting a new one, and using it for your Time Machine backups; once you have a good backup there, reformat the old one (and select Security Options to write zeros to the whole drive -- if that fails, you know the drive is toast).  Use it for secondary backups, per FAQ #27.   If it has failed, get a second new one for secondary backups.

  • Back up using time machine and external hard drive

    Hello,
I am having a difficult time deciding the best way to back up important documents.
    I have:
    1TB internal hard drive
3 TB external hard drive and
    1TB external hard drive
I currently have about 1TB worth of data to be stored, but that will increase to about 1.5TB once I get a bunch of stuff off the HD camera's hard drive.  I would like to keep my internal hard drive somewhat free to keep the computer running fast, but also want to make sure I am properly backed up.
Should I put ALL (or nearly all) of the files on the 3 TB external hard drive, and have time machine back that up and not worry about the rest? I'm a little weary about putting all of the files on one device even if it is backed up by TM.
If I do this, do I need to back up the 3 TB external drive in addition to using TM?
    Thanks!
