2 macs, 1 external HD: how to connect?

I need need two macs connected to the same external HD. the problem is that the macs are in separate parts of the house.
My internet connection is wireless.
Can I connect both macs to the external HD through my wireless network.
If it helps, I need this because I intend to create one iphoto/itunes library that both macs can use.
Thanks for all and any feedback.

You can't directly connect the same drive to two machines at once.
You connect the drive to one machine, and use file sharing on that machine to make the drive available to the other machine.
In this scenario the first machine has to be online any time the second machine wants to retrieve files.
The only other option is to get a network attached drive that connects directly to the ethernet network. It's the same basic principle, the only difference being that the second machine can access the files whether the first one is on or not.

  • Mac OS 9.1 How to connect to the internet

How do I connect to the Internet with PPP (dial-up access and a modem? What are the procedures. I am using a OS 9.1.
    Please help.

Well, first you need an ISP=Internet Servce Provider to provide you with internet service.
You can then go to your Mac OS Help Menu for detailed instructions. You will need to make the connection through your TCP/IP Control Panels.
If you run into problem you can check Knowledge Base Article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106871 Mac OS 8, Mac OS 9: Troubleshooting a Dial-Up/PPP Internet Connection.
Post back if you run into any problems. Knowledgable users still using dialup service and/or know more about it than I do will be able to help you.
    Good luck!

  • How to connect 2 more monitor

    Hi,
I'm running FCS 2 on my mac, I was wondering how to connect to more monitors to work with my video editing?
    Thanks

Actually, that solves your problem if you want to connect 1 monitor.
If you want to connect 2 monitors, (or even 3 more), check Matrox website, they have something called DualHead2Go and TripleHead2Go.

  • How can I create a new folder in an external disk that is connected via USB to my Mac?

How can I create a new folder in an external disk that is connected via USB to my Mac?

Just like you would create a new folder anywhere. Open the drive's icon from your desktop or the Finder, and click shift-command-N. (Or use the Finder menu if you prefer - File - New Folder).
If you can't create a folder, your drive may be the wrong format (you can't write to a Windows/NTFS formatted drive, for example). You'll have to back up any files you have on there, and then use Disk Utility to reformat it to Mac Extended (if it will only be used on a Mac) or MS-DOS format (if you want to share it with a PC).

  • I am a OS10.7.4 user. yesterday i bought a Lacie external hard disk but error message appear said " You cant open the applicant LaCie setup assistant because PowerPC applicants are no longer support". please help me how to connect my mac with Lacie??

i am a OS10.7.4 user. yesterday i bought a Lacie external hard disk but error message appear said " You cant open the applicant LaCie setup assistant because PowerPC applicants are no longer support". please help me how to connect my mac with Lacie??

You do not need the Setup Assistant; in fact, you do not need any software on an external hard drive. I have two LaCie's; I erased the drive as soon as I plugged it in. You will need to format it anyway because most hard drives come Windows formatted. So, if you only want to use it with the Mac, highlight it in Disk Utility and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format and the GUID Partition scheme under Options. While doing that, it will erase the drive (and get rid of the LaCie software) - once finished, your drive is ready to use for Time Machine or any other backup plans you have for it.

  • I have a WD Passport HD attached to my Mac. When it was last connected it went into sleep mode and ran out of battery. Now I cannot find my HD in Finder and Disk Utilities is telling me it cannot repair the HD. Any ideas on how to recover my data?

I have a WD Passport HD attached to my Mac. When it was last connected it went into sleep mode and ran out of battery. There are other methodologies of scanning a HD
which involve data extraction, but loss of metadata is often the result if the directory is corrupt.
Metadata is the info on what the data IS.
Like having all your papers thrown in the air, its all there, but just a giant mess.
This is why you always always must have several external HD redundancies of your data.  One isnt enough, neither is two really.

Was that your only copy of your priceless data?  Just that one external HD?

How do you switch output sounds   set to my external monitor that is connected via HDMI.

    Hello gail from Ajijic,
If you'd like to change the audio output of your Mac, you can do so by accessing the Sound preferences in your System Preferences.
Before you start, open the Output pane of Sound preferences (choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Sound, then click Output).
    Choose a sound output device
From the list of sound output devices, select the one you want to use. All sound output devices available to your Mac are listed, including the computer’s internal speakers, devices plugged into your computer’s sound port (), USB speakers, and AirPlay devices.
For any device plugged into the computer’s sound port, choose Headphones.

ok - since you'll be sharing it with a PC - connect it to your windows pc - then format from there - instead of NTFS format - choose exFAT.
or, you can read the link below on how to do it in dos mode.

There are several different ways to move data from your old PC to your iMac, including Manually Migrating at > Switch 101: Migrate your Windows files or system to your Mac
If you just want to move file's from your External HD, simply plug it into your iMac and drag your doc's to your Documents Folder and Import your photos into iPhoto.

  • How do i back up files from mac to external harddrive

how do I back up files from mac to external harddrive not using time machine?

First format the external as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    Connect via Firewire.
If it is just a few files or folders you want to back up you can just drag and drop. Or you can use SyncTwoFolders to keep the backups up to date.
If you want to back up your entire start-up disk use SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner, both of which can make a bootable clone of your entire start-up drive.
