2 Macs, 1 Library (NAS?

I don't know jack about this stuff... I just googled NAS before posting here. I just know that I have 2 mac laptops using iTunes and a 360 that i watch videos wirelessly off my MBP with, and i want one thing hosting all the music and movies.
I have two mac laptops that I want to share one iTunes library, and if that library and all its music were on an external, maybe a NAS (i just read about them today) then that would be best. I also want the 'host', whether it is one of the mac laptops or the NAS to serve video to my ethernet-cable-connected-to-router 360.
Equipment I have now: Macbook, Macbook Pro, old G3 iMac, Airport Express 802.11g, Xbox 360, Linksys wrt54g router.
Please recommend me a a setup. I hook the Express to the stereo for Airtunes.
Recommendations for a NAS device that I can plug some USB drives into that isn't a piece of junk would be nice as well. Something like this maybe: Linksys Storage Link for USB 2.0 Disk Drives NSLU2
Or after all that should I just keep all music on one and play off of it using iTunes built in sharing?

I can confirm this behavior. I use NFS and automount to share large libraries (audio/video/photo) to my OSX computer, which works very well. ~/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary is simply a symlink to an automounted NFS directory containing the Aperture Library.aplibrary directory.
Aperture 3.0 -> 3.1.1, this setup has worked well for me. I have never had issues accessing, loading, modifying or otherwise altering the library. I have never had a corrupted library, or any other observed issues from operating in this fashion.
Starting in 3.1.2 when I attempt to start Aperture, I get the following error message before the application quits:
Aperture cannot access this library
To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly.
Another thing work noting is that iphoto11 can still see and use the NFS mounted aperture library wihtout issue.
I for one would really enjoy seeing Aperture support network mounted photo libraries again. Until then, back to Aperture 3.1.1 for me. bummer.

I transfered my purchases from my iphone to my mac. All transfers completed. One particular album shows up on the phone but the songs are greyed out and don't play. Itunes store shows album as purchased but album does not show up in my Mac library. How can I retrieve the album.

So i've found the answer to this by clicking on every menu and setting in the itunes store. It turns out some purchases in the cloud can be hidden probably as the result of an interrupted transfer/sync/backup or a network outage. To unhide purchases 'greyed out ' items , go to the Itunes store (on the PC) click on your account name and select view account. (you'll be prompted for your itunes password) once you are in scroll down to the purchase history section. there should be an option for hidden purchases. click through and click on unhide purchases, redownloadble purchases. any hidden purchases will then show up. click on unhide to reactivate and download. This may only work for purchases in the cloud.
    hope others find this useful.

  • Using iTunes in Parallels Environment with Mac Library

Is it possible, while running Windows XP in a Parallels environment on my Mac, to have the Windows version of iTunes access my music library located on my Mac hard drive in the normal position (~/Music/iTunes)? I've tried connecting the Windows version of iTunes to the Mac library but iTunes can not see or access the library in the Mac environment.
    Is this even possible?
Thanks for any assistance with this question.
    Peter

Well you're not alone in getting surprised by that Mac requirement. Apple has never much flinched about backward compatability. Their new OS's often leave the past completely behind, unlike Windows which tries to keep old things running through the updates (which isn't always a good thing, mind you). Apple's MO makes for a cleaner, more stable transition but it does force you to make decisions. Get the latest and abandon old programs, or soldier on with the old ways and forget about using anything new. I think you'll be glad you chose to upgrade. I just wish Apple (as well as Microsoft) would make these ultimately necessary upgrades cheaper!

  • Can't see mac library from windows iTunes

    Hello!
I switched on home collection to synchronize library between Mac and Widows iTunes. I can see and open Windows library from my Mac. But i can't from Windows. It doesn't show Mac library.
And how i can select main library? Or i will have same data in both iTunes?
    Thank you

Please see windows 8 does not recognise Macintosh HD, No drive Letter.
You can verify if you have CoreStorage by executing diskutil cs list in OS X Terminal.

  • Has anyone successfully used a "WD My Book for Mac" via NAS (plugged into USB port on router) as a Time Machine back-up drive?

Has anyone successfully used a "WD My Book for Mac" via NAS (plugged into USB port on router) as a Time Machine back-up drive? Apple support tech tried to tell me it wasn't possible and that the only NAS Time Machine could back up to is the Time Capsule, but I'm not buying it. I know it's doable, but I'm having a hard time figuring out which External HDDs will work and which ones won't.  If not My Book for Mac, is there an External HDD that will work? (Running OS X 10.9.1 - Mavericks, btw...)

Given the nature of backups, my recommendation has always been to use a strategy that is unequivocally supported by Apple. As you already determined Apple Support unequivocally informed you that your proposal will not work, unless your router is an Apple AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.
The exhaustive list of devices supported by Time Machine amounts to the following:
AirPort Time Capsule's built-in hard disk (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to a Time Capsule (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to an AirPort Extreme (current model only)
A hard disk drive directly connected to your Mac
    That is all.
Use whatever backup device you want, but you should be aware that this site is full of reports of misery from hapless individuals who had been using NAS devices for Time Machine backups, only to find that they were incomplete, corrupted, or useless when they were required. Apple won't care if you lose your data while using a Time Machine configuration specifically excluded from their technical support documents.

Choose one or more Projects, and then use Export as New Library (from File).  The resulting export will be a fully functioning Aperture Library to either transfer and open on the Macbook Pro, or to Import into a library you already have on the MBP.

  • I copied iPhoto library from old Mac to NAS. I cannot access the library from my new Mac

I've a nice new MacBook Pro (OS X 10.9.5) with iPhoto version 9.5.1. I decided to move my iPhoto library from my old MBP (running iPhoto 7.1.5) to a Synology NAS and expected I'd be able to open it from the new Mac.
I can see the library on the NAS from the new MAC. Unfortunately when I select it using option key on iPhoto launch or trying to open directly from the library in Finder, I end up with iPhoto open and showing "No photos". I've tried using iPhoto Library Manager and this can't select the library either.
I can open the library on the NAS from my old Mac OK.
Does anyone have an idea what I'm missing here?

iPhoto Libraries cannot be located on a NAS driver. Read this Apple document, iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives - Apple Support, and note the last sentence of the first paragraph.
They must be located on a drive formatted OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored (if an external HD).  A NAS is a headless computer with a file system and file access requirements that are not compatible with iPhoto's Library structure.

  • Windows and mac library

At some point in version 9, I was able to use same library itl on nas with both windows (an xp and win 7) and a mac! But alas, it broke and can not dual share.
The only thing I can pin down is that mac itunes calls shared directory volumes/music and windows itunes sees it as nas/music. If I switch after setting up, it blows up the other.  I can live with this, but it is hard to keep importing same files into both. I liked windows media because it could watch directories and add music files, but Itunes has ignored this nice process. Help

The problem with using same library file is that OS X and Windows use completely different methods when referring to where a file is.
You should be able to have only one copy of the actual media file but the libraries in the Mac and Windows iTunes will have to be different. As long as both iTUnes use the same file location this has been made to work. The media file has to be stored on a partition where both operating systems have read and write access.

  • Issues with brand new mac-mini, NAS, transmission, external HD's

    Hi,
I am totally new to mac, got my first mac mini about 2 weeks ago, what a lovely shiny box of joy it seemed at the beginning.
I have the 2GHz model, upgraded to 2GB ram (by the apple store tech's) I have a 250GB 2.5 usb powered drive connected to it to be solely used for Time machine. I also have 2 other 250GB drives, one for Music and one for video.
as the 250GB drives are not so big I bought a 'my book' 500GB firewire WD drive and used the firewire connection to connect this to the mac, at this point it all still seems fine.... Realising that I'm pretty quickly going to have space limitations with these small sizes I bought a 1TB NAS by Lacie, this ethernet disk is connected only to the router (thompson speedtouch) and I've setup the automatic login so I can see a desktop icon for the open share.
Applications which are installed are media-link (to use to link to PS3) quicksilver (nice little utility), transmission and the ethernet agent installed for the lacie NAS drive.
in the last week, its like I cannot make transfers to the Lacie, 130GB was to take 25 hours, but would dip out after a couple, yes I set the computer to not sleep, connection dips out even still.
Transmission has crashed a couple of times, when pointing to foder on the NAS, the app could take up to 2 minutes to load and all transfers were stuck on paused, resume wouldnt work, then crash, restart, verify local data, start, dip out, crash.... and on and on.....
Anyone have similar gear working well? or same gear working in the same faulty way?
Please help and be gentle, I'm only new

oh...something more to add, when I had transmission setup to write directly to the NAS, it would write to a folder called 'incomplete'
Now I have removed any transmission transfers and reassigned the folders transmission shouild point to as being the WD mybook on firewire, it seems to be working so far and application not as slow as wioth the NAS, however the NAS will not let me delete this junk folder full of 'incomplete' files.
so the biggest issue it seems I am facing is with the NAS.
    thanks.

  • Mac Library file not loading in bootcamp itunes post 8.2 update

I use to have the itunes library file load from the mac partition when using itunes in my windows xp. Since the updates in itunes in both mac and windows I can't seem to load the library file anymore. The library loads fine in the mac partition but when trying to load it in my itunes in windows xp it shows an empty library now.
I have tried loading previous library files and uninstalling and reinstalling itunes on my windows partition. I can't seem to be able to do anything. I still would like to use my current mac itunes library as I am accustomed to the order which my songs are in.

I found a way to listen to my music but it is a hassle because I have to do all these steps every time I restart itunes.
Before doing anything make sure the itune library is a fresh one in windows.
    1. Start itunes with the windows .itl loaded
    2. Delete all previous songs as they are "missing" after quitting itunes
    3. Import playlist using the itunes music library xml file
    4. Wait about 10 minutes for itunes to process all the songs
Looks like I am stuck with this till there is a fix.

  • PC MAC library Media Path FLA

    Hi,
I am one of a team of designers/coders and the team are a mix
of PC and Mac users. The Flash version we work in is 8.
We all take on each others Jobs from time to time and it's
becoming a problem when we need to update media in the Library as
the FLA can't find them. Is there a preference or system file that
we need to change etc etc? I know we can manually locate the files
but at present we are designing a JSFL that automatically updates,
sizes our media within the FLA and the path issue is causing a
    problem.
We work off the same network and retrieve the FLA and media
files from the same server. We work with the files from there
created source and never move them.
Thanks in advance for any help on this issue.
    Simon.

    More information...
The issue is importing media on a Mac and then trying to
update them on a PC. If I import media on a PC and update on a Mac
then the Mac seems to be able to do it. The file path from the Mac
appears on the PC absolute. The file path from the PC appears on
the Mac relative. When I import on the PC it does appear absolute
    on PC?!?!
I hope this is not too confusing!
    Any ideas?
    cheers Simon.

  • Mac to Mac Library transfer?

Alright, when I switched from PC to Mac, I was able to transfer the iTunes Library.itl file to my old G3 iBook (10.3.9), and was able to retain all of my play counts. The actual music files are on an external drive. I just got a new MacBook. I attempted to transfer the .itl file again, but it gives an error message sayign that the .itl file does not appear to be a valid exported file. I transferred the library.xml file from the ibook, and all but 240 of my songs appeared along with my playlists, but all of my play counts and ratings were gone.
I guess the condensed version of the above is what is the easiest way to transfer my library and retain the play counts given that all of my music files are on an external drive?

Do you have enough room on the boot drive to consolidate everything onto that from the 2nd drive?
Oh wait, is the second drive also an internal drive or an external drive?
Anyway, if you can consolidate to the boot drive. Then you can copy the entire iTunes folder to the external then plug into the new mac, copy it again onto the new Mac then open it directly from iTunes...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one

  • Is there a way to DELETE the local mac library after iCloud upload?

I've uploaded 75GB of photos to iCloud, and would now LOVE to reclaim that space in my meagre 250 GB Mac Book Pro.
Now that I've paid my iClouds photo subscription, is there a way to delete the local Photos library and reclaim that space?
FYI the "optimized" version is 72 GB.
    Thanks,

Just for clarity, I am not referring to the iPhotos library. I am referring to the newly created Photos library. Since I plan not to use iPhoto and Aperture anymore, I am moving the iPhotos old library to an external HD. My question is whether I can delete the newly created Photos library from my hard drive since I'm paying for online storage and have successfully imported 75 GB of photos to iCloud.

  • Best MAC compatible NAS device?

    Hey.
I am looking for a NAS device to use with my iMac and MacBook. Therefore, I was wondering if anybody knows if any of the NAS manufacturers such as NetGear, Synology, QNAP etc. has specialized in Mac compatibility?
If so, which NAS device would you recommend? I am looking for a NAS device with 2 bays for drives.
    Thank you for your help
    Best regards,
    Jesper Pedersen

From my brief experience with Synology, I would like to elaborate on something Laplace noted.
Synology is not Mac-friendly. It is the antithesis of Mac-friendly if only for one reason:
    The ext4 file system.
The ext4 file system disallows particular file name character combinations to the extent that many files on an HFS+ file system (i.e. Mac's) simply cannot be transferred onto the device.
Including, but not limited to, ANY invisible Mac file. Or any file with an underscore at the beginning. And the list goes on.
Why custom partitioning is not allowed is a mystery to me. If there is no way around the issue, it's a bad system for Macs, period. Anyone who tells you otherwise probably doesn't use NAS for network file storage and sharing, which is supposed to be any NAS's main job.
In summary, Synology and Mac, as they currently stand, do not mix well.
Not to mention, file names with underscores at the beginning, etc., are not too uncommon on NTFS file sytems either (i.e. Windows'). So Windows users should keep an eye out as well.
