2 Macs, 2 iPods, 1 iTunes Music library

I have copied all my/our Cds into my G5iMac Music Library (iTunes 6.0.3) - I have over 3000 tracks - approx. 14Gb of music. I have a 30Gb 5th Gen. iPod and have all the tracks on my iPod.
However, my husband would like to copy my iTunes Music Library to his Mac mini so he can 'pick and choose' which tracks he wants to download to his iPod mini (6Gb). I started to copy various albums using a USB 2.0 flash drive but it will take forever so I've given up on that idea.
He has updated his iPod using my iMac but I've discovered that he's gone through my playlists and unchecked many, many, tracks that he doesn't want (but I do). Of course, now they don't download onto my iPod either.
Is there a simple way I can transfer a copy of my entire iTunes Music Library to his mac Mini so he can use his own computer to sync his iPod and leave mine to me? ;-(
I have a lan set up using Airport Express but only so he can share my ADSL2+ connection wirelessly - i.e. we don't share files between our computers (I also have a VAIO XP Pro SP2 notebook on the lan, too - I don't want any music on it at all).
If it is possible, would it be best to do this via firewire?
I would be grateful for any advice...
Cheers

I would do this via firewire - airporting would take all day.
go to network prefs, choose network port configurations, then click "new". select the built-in firewire option.
Once you have set up this on both machines (and connnected them with a firewire cable!), you should be able to connect by choosing "connect to server" from the Go menu in the finder.
if you have problems, try creating an new network location called "firewire" with only the firewire connection box checked.
if you have purchased music on iTunes you may not be able to share these files, but on that opic i am not 100% sure.
hope that helps.

  • Transferring iTunes music library from a mac to a PC

    Hi
Does anyone know how i can transfer all the songs on my mac iTunes to my new windows iTunes? I followed the instructions on the msn support website but these instructions must only be for transferring the iTunes library from a mac to a mac, or from a pc to another pc, and not from a mac to pc or vice versa.
I`ve just bought a laptop to take to university and i want to bring my music library with me.
When i loaded up my itunes from mac onto the pc it just keeps saying windows does not recognise the type of file. Is there a way of changing the settings so that windows will recognise and run a mac file?
If anyone knows that'd be of great help

The music files will transfer and play without a problem.
You will need to download a Windows version of iTunes and the iPod Updater in order to use the PC. The Mac versions will not work.
    iPod Updater
    iTunes Download Page
There may be some problem with the Windows version of iTunes reading the Mac's iTunes Library file. This may prevent you from completely moving over some of the music meta-data from the Mac to the PC.
There have been some posts on this, but I'll need to search for them.
Also see this for the transfer process: Buegie, "transfering music to another pc." #4, 11:22pm Oct 14, 2005 CDT
EDIT: Based on an old post I had copied into my "iPod Hints" file, here is how one contributer gave a high-level process:
i 1) copy the iTunes Music folder to your Windows machine, replacing the existing folder (back up the existing one first)
i 2) copy the iTunes Music Library.xml file to your Windows machine, and change the name to e.g. iTunesMac.xml so iTunes won't write over it.
i 3) delete any "iTunes Library.itl" file (back up the existing one)
i 4) run iTunes, and do File > Import... and pick iTunesMac.xml
    Hope this helps.

  • How to transfer music from ipod to itunes music library

i just opend itunes and all my music was gone on the library but i have it all on my nano..is there a way i can take all that music and transfer it to the itunes music library?

I don't know anyone who has had problems with it, and yes, it does take up a bit of space, but the advantage is that you can go to a computer that doesn't even have iTunes, plug in your iPod, and Yamipod lets you put music onto and off of the iPod with that computer. So if you have a work computer where you are not allowed to install programs (for example) you can still use it there.

  • How do I move music from iPOD to iTunes music library

How do you move music that was once on your iTunes music library that is now ONLY on your iPOD back to the music library. I want to do this so that I can burn a CD. Maybe there is an easier way??? Please help!

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • I bought a new laptop and used Windows Easy Transfer cable and moved all files from one computer to another. I installed iTunes and found my iTunes music Library.  However, when I plug in my iPod it says it is already synced with another iTunes Library.

I don't see anything in Help that shows when you already have transfered all the files over.  Why would it want to erase and sync when I already have all the music folder copied over?  I didn't have an issue when I had another technician copy from one laptop to another.  Home sharing is also on but not being recognized.

I suspect you only migrated the media folder instead of the complete working library. Either review the transfer process and copy over the entire iTunes folder from your old profile's music folder or see Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • I have just put an audio book into my iTunes music library.  When I tried to transfer it to my iPod shuffle it rearranged the tracks so that they are in the wrong order.  How can I put them in the order they appear in the book?

I have just put an audio book into my iTunes music library.  When I tried to transfer it to my iPod Shuffle it put the chapters in the wrong order i.e. Chap 1, Chap 10, Chap 11 etc. rather than Chap 1, Chap 2, Chap 3 ...  How can I get it to put them in the order they appear in the book?

First, we need to know if the audiobook chapters are being treated by iTunes as music files or as audiobooks. If they are not audiobooks purchased from the iTunes store, they might be getting "shuffled". You will need to look at "File" - "Properties" (I think - I don't use iTunes under Windows - or right-click on the file and choose "properties") and look at the media type. If it is "Music", change it to "Audiobook". If this is not the problem, or does not fix anything, please post back.
Actually, looking at your post again, a second thought occurs to me - assuming there are less than 100 chapters in the book, just renaming them with a leading zero on the first nine chapters might do it. A computer will alphabetically sort filenames in the order you quote (1, 10, 11, 12, 13, ... 2, 21, etc.) but a leading zero will fix that (01, 02, 03 ... 10, 11, 12)

  • How share an iTunes music library on a mac with 2 networked PC

I have an iMac with my iTunes music library. I have two PCs on the same network. I would like the 2 Windows PC to be able to show all the music in the Mac library and stream it, without having to copy it all to the local drive. Please assume I am technically challenged and have never done anything like this before

Turn on "Share my music" in the iTunes Sharing preferences on the Mac, and "look for shared music" on the PCs. The library from Mac should appear in the Source list in iTunes on the PCs.
For more information, look for "Sharing" in the iTunes Help or view the tutorial.

  • Is there a way to transfer my iphone/ipod music to my itunes music library?

my 1st generation iphone was synced with my laptop. then my hard drive crashed. so now i have a new hard drive. in order to sync my iphone with this one, it says it will erase all my music. what can i do? i heard about the software senuti, but i cannot get it to work, and i am worried that if it unlocks my iphone, it may render it useless, or something worse. what can i do? can anybody help? apple tells me i cannot transfer the songs from my iphone/ipod into my itunes music library because some of them were not purchased from itunes. i understand business. it's about money and copyright rights, etc...yada, yada, yada. i just hate to lose my songs (625 of them). i have no backup for the songs. i learned a lesson. BACKUP your stuff!

iTunes includes an option to transfer content that was purchased from the iTunes Store from an iPod or iPhone, but this is for content that was purchased from the iTunes Store ONLY.
With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
Any content not purchased from the iTunes Store will be lost, which is why maintaining a backup of your iTunes library along with all other important data stored on an external drive used for backup purposes only is so important. The iPhone is not designed nor intended to be a backup device.
If your iTunes content that was not purchased from the iTunes Store was imported into your iTunes library from music CDs, dust them off and start importing them back into your iTunes library.
Using a 3rd party utility or application that provides for this but is not supported by Apple is your only other option.

  • Ipod touch - itunes music library sharing

My 9 year old son has an ipod touch. Can he share my current iTunes music library? If so, how do we configure it in the settings without messing anything else up?  We finally just worked it out so we aren't getting each others texts anymore!!  Thanks!

Use the same Apple ID/iTunes account that was used to purchase the media. You use it in Settings>iTunes and App stores.
You can redownload iTunes purchases directly to the device as explained here:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
However, note the limit on changing accounts/ID discussed here:

  • Old 2005 Video iPod - How do I take music off and add to my iTunes music library?  And battery life issues...

I bought my husband a Video iPod clear back in 2005.  I bought the 30GB serial No 4V544C1WTXK Model number A1136.  Yes, very, very old.  However, it is an Apple product and therefore should be good forever right?    We actually rarely used it then and have not used it in years.  I got it out and brushed it off the other day.  I have two questions:
1-  I have some great music on it that I would like to transfer into my iTunes music library.  Is there a way to move it from the iPod into my iTunes library?
2-  It isn't really holding a battery charge even when it's been charging for hours.  Is there anything I can do about that?  Do I need to replace the battery?  Is there even a way to replace the battery?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

2-  It isn't really holding a battery charge even when it's been charging for hours.  Is there anything I can do about that?  Do I need to replace the battery?
Given the age of the device and that fact that it wasn't used for a lengthy period of time, it's likely that the iPod's battery is shot and in need of replacement.  Lithium-ion batteries need constant activity in order to maintain any sort of charge.  However, all batteries generally deteriote over time and lose their ability to charge.
Is there even a way to replace the battery?
Yes.  You can choose to have Apple swap the battery for a new one for the price indicated on this page.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
You could also choose to send it to a third party service instead to have them swap it out at a much lower cost.  A Google search for "iPod battery replacement" should give you a number of results to work with.

  • Syncing itunes music library with my ipod nano

I set up my new ipod this weekend. All music in my library synced fine. However, I added new songs to one of my play lists, when I went to sync to get the new tunes on my ipod, I chose that playlist. It deleted all other music and only loaded that playlist.
Also, I went to clean out my itunes music library and when I hit delete, it said that the next time I synced my nano, it would remove all songs not in music library
    Two questions...
    1. Do I have to check all playlists every time I upload new songs
    2. I don't want to keep all the songs I already have in my ipod on my computer. Do I have to keep all songs in my music library in order to avoid songs being deleted when I sync with my ipod or is there a way to only add new songs

    Hi Ricehouse;
You have posted your questions on iTune and iPods in the forum for OS 9. I would suggest that you report either over in the iTune or iPod forums for Windows. There will be more people there that can help you.

  • After PC crash iPod will not fully resync iTunes music library

After my PC, using Windows XP crashed, the iTunes music library was able to be copied back to the PC after XP was reinstalled. Music plays fine on PC from iTunes.
When I connected my iPod 30Gb w/color to the PC all seemed fine. It asked if I wanted to sync. I realize that what was on the iPod would be erased, but then reloaded.
Only 512 of about 4000 music files were put back on the iPod. When I connect the iPod to the PC, it says that iPod is up to date and I can disconnect.
How can I get a full resync of ALL the music files?
      Windows XP

Try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7
