2 Macs, 2 photo Libraries

My iMac has iPhoto and a photo library; my MacBook Pro has iPhoto and a somewhat different library. Will  iCloud photo library manage?

Will  iCloud photo library manage?
What are your plans? Do you want to upload the photos from both libraries to iCloud photo Library and merge them?
It is possible, if you have enough cloud storage. You can use iCloud from several Macs but with a few restrictions, see:

What version of iPhoto? Do yuo hae Aperature 3.3? With iPhoto 9.3 and Aperature 3.3 you can merge iPhoto libraries - you also can do it with the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -

  • Syncing photo libraries with the new Photos (Yosemite) on three Macs

    Dear list members,
I have three Macs running Yosemite 10.10.3 and a very large photo library (160 gb). I have locally copied this library on all three Macs and manage them with iPhoto, trying to keep them identical to each other as possible with Photo Stream. Yesterday I upgraded to the new Photos app and converted the photo library on one of those Macs (I made a backup of this library in iPhoto format on an external HDD, just in case).
My goal is to have all three Macs with identical photo libraries (locally copied), perfectly synced and available also on my iPhone (for download). So my questions are:
    1. How will the new Photos app and the iCloud Photos service deal with those three libraries (which are basically the same, except for a few differences) on the different Macs? Will all of them be synced and become identical after a while, even considering their large size?
    2. Just to be sure that the photo libraries will be identical on all three Macs, should I delete the libraries on the other two Macs, let Photos build new ones, and let them be synced through the new service iCloud Photos (to which I subscribed with enough virtual disk space)?
Thank you very much for the attention.

If you are going to use the iCloud Photo Library, I would create new, blank Libraries for the other Macs, set as default.
Then, when you enable Photos and iCloud Photo Library on those Macs, it won't sync anything from them. You can then re-link the old iPhoto Libraries back to iPhoto on each Mac and manually add any missing photos that were only on those two Macs. Just Export the photos from iPhoto and upload them to the iCloud Photo Library.
    Ooops, almost forgot.
To create a new Library or to Link to another Library, hold down the Option Key when you start iPhoto.

  • Sharing Photo Libraries on one computer with two accounts

I have two accounts on my Mac Mini, OS 10.7.5 and have enabled photo sharing in both. However the second account, my wife's doesn't show the photo libraries I'm trying to share. Any thoughts please

Photo sharing works only between different computers, not for accounts on the same machine.
On the same computer you can give your wife direct access to your libraries, like described here:
iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
Or if your Mac MIni can be upgraded to a system that supports iCloud, you can share selected albums as Shared PhotoStreams: See iCloud: Using and troubleshooting Shared Photo Streams

  • All my photo libraries in my iPhone have duplicate photos since I have installed IOS 6.  Please help.

All my photo libraries in my iPhone have duplicate photos since I have installed IOS 6. I work with Aperture 3.3 not iPhoto! Also, most of the photos in my camera library have been deleted without my consent! I'm very ****** about that! Please help.

Photos in Photo Library are the ones that you've synced from your iTunes to your iPad. To free up space, you should delete these photos on your Photo Library since you already have the copies on your computer: Connect your iPad with your computer > Launch iTunes > click your iPad and navigate to Photos window > check Sync Photos from > select an empty folder and click Apply to carry out the syncing. After then, all photos in your Photo Library will be deleted.
As for photos in Camera Roll on your iPad, you should copy them to your computer for backup and deleted the copies on your iPad:Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or Windows PC - Apple Support

  • Photostream not updating on Mac Photos

Anybody else having issue with Photostream? I had two iPhoto libraries: One I was actively using, and one I've been hanging onto to merge one day. When I updated to Photos app, I read the pages on opening multiple libraries, hoping that this was finally my opportunity to merge the two. Alas, this only allowed me to successfully open each library, one at a time. When it became clear that there was going to be no way to merge the two libraries within Photo, I decided to just go back to opening my default iPhoto library with Photos and would import from the old iPhoto library manually some day in the future. My question/problem (finally, I know): It doesn't appear that new photos from my devices, since configuring Photos on Mac, are showing up in my Mac Photos photo stream. They stop on the day I installed it, and I don't see any way to force a sync. What did I do wrong? What am I missing?

    HI,
Maybe try it this way this is what I did with mine because I did not migrate and didn't know about that either.
and really have the sidebar so because it will help you get the pictures organized
Photos application for Mac Instructions that might help!
On your iPad,iPhone keep the iCloud on in settings for Photos.
if you have not opened the New Photos application yet to have it transfer your photos from iPhoto let it Transfer the Pictures.
once you have all the pictures from iPhoto to Photos then in Photos go to Preferences
there is general and iCloud tab and go to the iCloud and only uncheck the iCloud button that will make it so it doesn't sync with your iPhone and iPad for Photos.
Then in Photos go up to View and press show sidebar because with that view you can move your pictures easier to albums snd delete or move any pictures or make new albums
For Duplicates if you have a big pile in a row and I mean not like every other picture of the same pictures on the keyboard Hold down the shift button. or the other way is to Hold down the Command buttom that is right by the space bar then on the trackpad or mouse click once on the picture you want to delete and do a bunch at a time then on the last picture of that pile either right click the picture and delete or go up to the edit button which is next to file on the top left and click delete in edit.
when you are all done with moving around your pictures or whatever go back to Preferences and turn on iCloud and make sure you have the optimize Mac Storage and then you are done! I hope this makes sense and works for you! here are the 2 pictures I'm talking about in settings.

  • Two Photo Libraries

Still confused on this and hoping someone can assist me with how to handle this -
I upgraded to Photos however when I look under my Pictures folder I see TWO Photo Libraries (Photos Library & Photos Library 2)
How do I consolidate these or should I?
One has videos that will play, the others has the same videos that won't play...
Can someone PLEASE tell me how to fix this. I would greatly appreciate it!!

You can merge the two libraries into a new 3rd library on the old Mac with the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager.  Or use iPLM to copy all of the Events and albums of the smaller library into the larger one before copying to the new Mac.  The second method will retain the slideshows, books, claendars, etc. that are in the larger library.  The merge method creates albums for any books, calendars and slideshows.
Finally copy the merged library to the new Mac, place it in the Pictures folder and launch iPhoto to convert it to the newest version.

  • I can't access my iPhoto or Photos libraries with Elements 11.  Elements say it can't open those files?

I am using Elements 11 on a Mac.  I cannot access any of the pictures in my iPhoto or Photo libraries.  Elements says it cannot open those files.  There must be a way, but I can't find it.  I'd appreciate a solution.  Thanks.

No, you should never poke around in the iphoto library from outside iphoto. That's the fast track to corrupting it and losing all your pics. If you want to use iphoto with PSE you can either set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from iphoto or do it the way you have to do it with Photos (no choice with Photos):

I've copied several I Photo Libraries to external HD over the years.  Upgraded to Lion, now some libraries won't upgrade and permissions 'cannot be repaired' how do I access these photos/videos?

We need to know the format. Is it a NAS? FAT or NTSC? Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? Any but the last of these will cause you issues.

  • Choosing photo libraries to add to home sharing just clocks.

I have enabled home sharing and can access music and Video's through my Apple TV off my Mac. I am trying to add photo libraries with the "File-Home Sharing-Chooose dialog but it just clocks.. I left if for a day with no result. I have a large photo library 66,000. Running Mavericks with all the updates and and iTunes with all the updates,
Previously this worked but I turned off home sharing and now can't get photos back to share,
    Anybody have any ideas??

  • My wife and I have separate user accounts but want to share our Photos libraries or merge them as one.  How do I do this?

My wife and I just bought an MBP (mid-2014 version) with Retina display and have separate user accounts with Admin. privileges.
We want to share our Photos libraries or merge them as one.  How do we do this?  IS it better to just have one account instead?

iTunes- How to share music between different user accounts on a single computer
You cannot merge two separate libraries across user accounts. Photos does not have the function of merging different Photos.library files. If you have Aperture then you can merge the two before migrating over to Photos.

  • Why do I have two photo libraries?

    I found two photos libraries:
I have one on my imac in the "pictures folder" and I also have one on my external drive.
All I have done so far is import over my aperture library and re-arranged the projects.
Both have the same time stamp today at 3:59pm and both will change this time stamp when I open the program.
The one in the "pictures folder" reads 11.3gb
The one on the external reads 17.17 gb
    Why is there two?
Also: how do you use the photos app  to display as the screen saver?
I use outlook and it does not work as email either.
When you share a photo to the desktop from the program it will default to full screen regardless of what your settings are in system preferences. Any fix for this?
    Thanks

    Mistake on below:
It is 11.3 MB compared to 17.17GB
The one in the "pictures folder" reads 11.3gb
The one on the external reads 17.17 gb

  • XMP metadata for Photo Libraries

I demo lightroom at shows for Adobe and one of the constant gripes I get, and spend a long time trying to convince punters I have no answer for, is that Lightroom doesn't interact at all well with some of the software that photo libraries use. I have never had any exposure to such applications, but I recall one being called Photo Suite.
Apparently the problem is metadata captions do not travel well from Lightroom back to these Photo Library apps. So I have just had a load of photographers over the last few days come to me complaining that they have captioned images in Lightroom, but the captions have not been captured in such a way that they can be read by these library apps.
Can anybody make this happen for these people supplying photos to the libraries, because I feel that suppliers are a little hesitant to use Lightroom fully unless it improves. I can't shed much more light on it than this as I have no experience of any Photo Library software.

I'm not so sure that a lot of image libraries are prepared to ditch their library software. My understanding of it is that the photographers who have the library software - and there seems to be a number of them - are being forced to use the image library software by the image library they are submitting their shots to. If captions aren't being retained, then the shots they are submitting are being rejected by the libraries which is obviously causing a loss of income. Something that causes me a loss of income doesn't get used.
So, by the lack of communication and updating of captions between the apps, photographers are being held back, and I get the feeling the photographers would very much like to use LR and know it is without fail compatible with the image library software.
These captions and changes are apparently being recognised by PSCS3, but not lightroom, so where does the fault lie?

  • Should I merge or split photo libraries- seeking opinions

I am seeking input on how to organize my photo libraries. I primarily use iPHOTO, but I do own Aperture. I keep a current iPHOTO library on my Macbook SSD. Due to space constraints, I have created several libraries over the years and offloaded those onto external hard drives.
    So, for example:
I have iPHOTO 2015 on my laptop,
but on external drives I have these 3 iPHOTO libraries: 2104, 2012-2013, 2009 - 2011 (all as "managed" iPHOTO libraries) and
an Aperture library 1940-2009 (a "referenced" library - which includes scans of all my dad's old slides, as well as all my pre-iPhoto pictures.)
Each of these libraries is in the range of 60 -120GB in size. Right now these are scattered over 2 drives, and I want clear plan before I start moving everything to a new 2TB ext drive.
I can't seem to decide if I should merge all my external libraries in Aperture, or if I should continue to keep separate iPHOTO libraries.
Or perhaps just keep the current year on my laptop and then at the end of each year add it to one gigunda external library.
No matter what -  I will want at least the current years photos on the laptop drive.
So basically those of you with more experience - what are your thoughts??
    I have a 2014 15" MacbookPro, Yosemite OS, with 500 GB SSD (<120GB remaining)

The best is to have a single iphoto libray
You want to have a smaller library on your MBP too so do that and use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to move photos between the single complete library and the portable one on your MBP
