2 monitors- 1 vertical

I have 2 of the standard mac pro video cards. my main monitor is in port 1 and works great- the second monitor is vertically orientated and i can't get it to be recognized to Rotate: 90 degrees. (3rd and 4th monitor are another tv and standard monitor)
Level 2 support doesn't have an answer- anyone know how to get it to work?

Hello and welcome to Apple discussions.
I'm afraid unless Nvidia supplies a update to their video card driver software that rotating a monitor isn't possible.
There are no driver updates for Mac's on their site, they only strickly give a OEM solution.
Now some monitors will "tell" the driver software when the computer reboots that it's orientation is 1200 x 1920 instead of 1920 x 1200 for instance and the driver software (if it has that resolution) will just do it.
ATI has always been a bit more bending with some of their video cards and drivers supporting rotation, for instance the one I have supports it, but isn't available for PCI video card based Mac's. I'm thinking Apple dislikes the very concept of rotating monitors, the 30" being able to rotate would be awesome.
You might just have to wait until a solution appears and buy that video card, update the driver software. Right now AMD owns ATI, so the future is uncertain. We might be using only Nvidia video cards from now on. (Intel and AMD are rivals)

  • Dual Monitors Arranged Vertically

    Hi.  I can't for the life of me figure out how to setup dual monitors.  My calibrated monitor is on bottom, so I want the interface/tools on top.  Can someone help me out?  Thanks so much!

    Open settings (S).  Then select "Display" and change the "Top" value to match the UI screens vertical resolution.
    Example for a 2x 1920x1080 display-setup:

  • Stuffed my iMac monitor - shows vertical coloured lines

    Hello,
    I was trying to configure an external monitor and failed. I changed some resolutions and now get lots of bright, vertical, coloured lines as the Mac starts up.
    The startup screen is fine, I can access single user mode or open-firmware.
    I've reset the pram (which fixed the screen perspective back to normal on startup - but the vertical lines continue to appear.
    If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks
    Greg

    I'm not sure if removing it would have worked, since it had changed my monitor resolutions elsewhere.
    Anyway, Stephane (who wrote the app) told me how to resolve...
    Firstly: I had already zapped the PRAM, and NVRAM.
    Secondly: I could restart in single user mode (start holding Apple-S). To make the filesystem writeable I mounted it "/sbin/mount -uw /"
    These fixed the start up resolution, but still gave me the vertical lines after startup.
    Then, Stephane wrote:

    The best solution finally would be to delete the custom resolutions
    completely from the system preferences.
    These custom res are stored in /System/Library/Displays/Overrides.
    What exact file it is, is depending on your system: sort all the directories/files by date, the one that was modified recently (yesterday or so) corresponds to your added custom resolutions.
    Remove this file, and start again: you'll be back at the starting point.
    I hope this helps,
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I actually went to that directory, found that file (which was also a directory), opened that directory, sorted it, and rm'd the newest file. All is now well.
    Thank you for responding, and to anyone who has been thinking about how to help...
  • TouchSmart monitor showing vertical coloured lines
    My touchsmart is showing vertical colourful lines when I try to boot the computer. I called HP and they said I need a new computer. Does anyone have a solution to the problem?
    Model number would help a grat deal...
    The IQ7xx units are prone to a certain kind of failure that looks like this, it is gnerally not something the average person would repair with a 3 generation old PC.
  • Reading monitor vertical sync time
    I'm using Labview 5.1 in Win98. I'm writing a program for a psychology experiment where a subject responds to events on screen, and we record the response time in milliseconds. Response is recorded by a NI digital I/O card.
    I'd like to synchronise graphic drawing on screen with the vertical flyback of the monitor (the vertical sync pulse), or alternatively, be able to read the millisecond counter value at the last vertical interval. Is there any way of doing this, maybe with a Windows API call?
    Is there some sort of hardware signal that would accompany the vertical sync pulse? If you can get a hardware signal, synchronizing things will be much easier. I've never tried anything like this, but I can imagine several problems trying to do it through software. For one, I would bet that the type of functionality you want would be controlled by the graphics and video drivers, which means that you could not get it from a Windows API. Even if you could create a windows event for it, by the time you captured the event in your control software, you will have already lost several microseconds.
  • 2 new Asus AH236H monitors. How to ?
    I have two ASUS AH236H monitors. I have a new MacMini Funning 10.8.3.
    Main monitor is on MacMini HDMI to HDMI.
    Second monitor is is MacMini Thunderbolt to HDMI.
    I want to have main one in Landscape mode and the second monitor in Vertical Portrait mode. But when I select it, and then apply the 90° option, they both are in Verticle mode.
    How can I get them to be independent.
    The module name is asus-acpi
    To load it enter (as root)
    modprobe asus-acpi
    If you get no output the module was loaded.
    To check use the lsmod command
    lsmod | grep asus
    If you get an output it is really loaded
    To load it automatically at startup add asus-acpi to the
    MODULES line in /etc/rc.conf
    Nice How-To : http://m6n.ath.cx/forum/viewtopic.php?t=208
    It is for the Asus M6, but it uses asus-acpi, too.
  • Interface Bug with 2 monitors in LP8
    I use 2 monitors tiled vertically to display a large track layout - in 7.2 I'd have to open the screenset and drag the window across to the 2nd screen - once I did this it would stay in place (across the 2 monitors)
    I LP 8 I tried the same thing - only when I select a track on the 1st montor the display reverts and redraws the window to only ONE screen - so for now v. 8 is useless -
    Also - I find the legibility is MUCH WORSE with this haze of grey over everything - Looks Like I'll be hanging on to my xs usb keys for a while---
    back to work, back to 7.2
    I work with 2 monitors all the time - with very large arrangements it's a huge boon. Are you saying if for example you have a linked matrix editor open on the 2nd screen every time you change tracks it shhots onto screen 1?
    This would be a disaster for my use of Logic so I hope this isn't the case or if it is it's a soon to be fixed bug!
  • Multiple monitor
    I am running three Dell 24" monitors in vertical as my work area.  Each has its own NVid GEForce GT120 card. This has worked beautifully for about three years. Now, all of a sudden, I get bizzare graphics corruption (looks like large blocks of parts of the windows being diplayed, being dragged across a screen) on one monitor.  Depending on which apps are running, it can be on the left or right screen, but never the main (center) monitor).  I've run DiskWarrior and rebooted hte machine to no avail. If I toggle F11, sometimes the bad display will clear up.  Swapping displays and DVI cables tells me the issue is not with any one monitor, cable or graphics card.
    Anyone got any idea what's up ?  I'm finding it hard to get any work done.....
    Thansk for any advice.
    Great advice - thanks !  Two of the GT120's had a bunch of fluff on top of the ventilation fan.  Too bad that Apple had to cram them in there so tightly on the MB.  There was v. little space between two of the cards and they were choked. Temps on the PCIe slots are now 52, 57 and 60 deg C. Much cooler.  Running for an hour now w/o any signs of the crazy graphics wierdness.  Fingers crossed.
  • Exporting PDF's out of InDesign CS5.5?
    I have a bunch of users in my newsroom that are having various different issues (yes we have 3rd party extensions and no we can't disable them and put out a paper that way...kind of between a rock and a hard place there!).  One of the issues is exporting pages out as PDF's.  It's crashing fairly regularly.
    It appears to me that there are 3 different ways to put out a PDF for printing (systems admin for a newspaper).  Is there a right and a wrong way to get a PDF out of InDesign?  Perhaps a less likely to crash option?  As of my count there's 3 different ways that a PDF can be created from InDesign:
    File - > Adobe PDF Presets
    File -> Export
    File -> Print
    The computers they are running are Windows XP (all updates applied), 4 Gigs of RAM, Dual monitors set vertical (read something that this might be an issue?), Quad Core systems.
    Thanks in advance.
    Is not encouraging. It doesn't look anything like PDF Export, and it also appears to be rather incomplete.
    Was this crash, from 8:26pm on Monday, truly in pdf export?
    7.5.2 is certainly the version to be on. Do you know if your problems occurr with CS5?
    Which of the 3 (well, 2) methods of obtaining a PDF produce the crashes?
    Have you taken special steps to disable background (async) PDF exports?
  • Two radeon 4870 cards
    I have a 2009 Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon HD 4870 Video card, I've been using two monitors since I first got the machine, but I would like to add a second 4870 card and go to 4 monitors (one vertical for coding).
    Can this be done?
    There are a number of discussions about it, but no one that I can find has actually done it yet.
    Thanks
    -Paul-
    No one is going to recommend 4870 or buying one and run Mountain Lion.
    An ATI 5770 $249 can run 3 displays and uses 1 x 6-pin connector.
    4870 was old even in 2009 so that puts it around 5 yr old plus tech and lacking some of the features 10.8.4 looks to use and relies on for OpenGL and OpenCL.
  • AJA Lhi
    I am using an AJA Lhi card in my Mac with PP CS4.  I am capturing by component from a Sony HDV camera.  I would like to speak with someone who uses this setup and can give me the configuration that they use that makes everything work.  So far my problems are that the output monitor has vertical lines in the test pattern and now when capturing on the video.  And audio is not coming through the mixer to the card...but it does show on the mixer and comes out the AJA card via the board to the studio speakers.  I know this is just trial and error but it would be nice and cut to the chase with someone who has been there.  I've been using compressed DVCPRO HD 1920x1080 8 bit as the capture codec.  Any one one out there with the same set up?
    is your camera a "Tape" camera or other storage format.
    if Tape and not capturing Live (direct input to computer) there is no point to bringing it in any other way than firewire.
    if not tape or you are capturing live then it may make sence. as you may be able to bring it in uncompressed.
    (assuming your drives are up to it)
  • How to remove "help" from the menu bar?
    I'm using a landscape monitor in vertical mode, so I have a very narrow top of the screen. I never use the help button, ever. How can I remove it from the menu bar, freeing up some space? I need more space in the menu bar for MenuMeters etc. Thanks.
    Usually the apps belonging to these icons have an option that allows you to hide the Menu Bar icon by allowing them to run as an app in the dock. However, certain applications like Caffeine must show their icons as otherwise you wouldn't be able to access them.
    For example, Dropbox doesn't allow you to remove its menu bar icon:
  • Memory Swap?
    I have a 15" MacBook Pro (early 2011) that I replaced the 4gigs of RAM with 16gigs.
    I also have a 17" MacBook Pro (early 2009) that also has 4gigs of RAM. Was thinking of replacing the RAM I took out of the 15" into the 17" but not sure from the specs if they are any better.
    Looks like they are all 2GB DDR3 chips.
    Anyone know if the 2011 RAM is any better?
    Thanks!
    Actually I upgraded the 2011 to 16gb of RAM and added an SSD (and took out the superdrive to keep the old drive for extra storage).
    Swapped the drives into the 2009 while the other is in the shop. The SSD definitely makes a difference. Actually considering putting the 16gb in the 2009 and seeing how it goes. Not sure how the video cards and processors compare though so might not be worth it. Won't have money to upgrade for awhile (and they don't make 17" MBP anymore *sob*).
    I sure do miss the 17" screen though. I guess the other option is to get an external monitor and vertical stand to use with the 15". My deskspace is limited so not sure if that will work; it's a "secretary" desk so the desk space actually folds up (have to work with limited space in NYC).
    Definitely don't have room (or money) for a desktop currently and I like having a laptop to sit in different places in the apartment. Don't take the laptop out as much now that I have an iPad Mini anyway.
