2 monitors cable

What kind of cable do you need to hook up a external VGA monitor to my 17 inch imac G5 and can i use my external monitor as the main monitor.

Hello,
This is the cable you would need to connect an external VGA monitor to your iMac G5:
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore/?productLearnMore=M8 639G/A
Now, this generally only provides you with a duplicate of what you see on your screen already.
But, you can use an unsupported hack to enable you to display a different image / extend your desktop to the external monitor:

Understand that such a hack could risk your warranty if something were to go wrong. It is not supported by Apple, and it falls into a category of unauthorized modification.
I hope this helps.

  • I cannot get my monitor cable to fit in the hdmi to vga adapter

    Hello
I was wondering if anyone is having the same issue as me.  I'm trying to plug my new mac mini into my Dell flat screen monitor.  It doesn't seem to fit my HDMI to VGA cable so I'm assuming that my cable is in fact a DVI?  The cable is actually a little too big for the VGA adapter and no spots for the screws.  If anyone could help me further I'd really appreciate it.

Hello, what does the connector on the Monitor & Cable look like?

  • 2nd Monitor Cable

Looking for a "clean" video cable for adding 2nd monitor to 24" iMac.
The back of the computer faces the world. Would like to have short
12-18" monitor cable (dreaming) and not have to use Apples adapter attached to 6' folded up vga video cable. And of course white would be nice.
Second choice would be the Apple adapter and just a short male/male vga cable.
    thanks

I don't think you'll have any luck avoiding the mini-DVI adapter, but here's
a source for male/male VGA cables in various lengths -- unfortunately,
    nothing short AND white.

  • Completely insane:  brand new, 13.3". attach DVI/monitor cable airport drop

Okay, going insane debugging this through router/wireless, etc. I have two macbooks. An older 15 inch, 2007. works absolutely flawless with my wireless (netgear wireless).
I have a brand spanking new 13.3" sitting right next to it. WORKS FINE with wireless. now, I attach it to my rig, monitor, using the minidv cable (monoprice), and BOOM, wireless instantly stops working on the 13.3. the 15 inch. totally fine on the same network.
i have a ping running in a terminal. will work for hours, connect the monitor: ping immediately fails.
completely driving me nuts. do i need to buy another DVI cable. what's the connection between the airport card and connecting the monitor???

    aloharich wrote:
still confused, because my monitor works FINE with my 15.5 powerbook with no adapter.
it MUST be the apple approved mini DVI adapter that is causing this interference.
With these sorts of issues it is often the entire system (ie computer, monitor, cable, adaptor) in toto that is involved in producing the interference, aloharich. Sometimes changing any single element is all that is needed to overcome the problem. It is their interaction that generates the issue. Once they are all connected they are electrically "one" in some senses.
i'm sure my solution is buy SOMETHING NEW: adapter, monitor, wireless router...
Before going down that path I'd be trying things like simply changing the channel in use on your wireless router (you do this by accessing the router's own set-up processes using your web browser). Sometimes even simply relocating things will make a difference (try shifting the router , or the monitor location a few feet, or using a different power circuit for one or the other of them, or paradoxically, connecting them all to the same circuit, etc).
    Cheers

  • HT5019 Why can I not find a miniport to external monitor cable that works? I have bought for different types, two from Apple, cost me $300+ and still have no external monitor. Help, please.

    What have you bought?
What model Mac are you running?
What input sources are available on the display you are connecting it to?

  • Monitor cable max length

I want to put a Mini in our lobby and need to run the monitor cable through some conduit for as much as 20' to get to the monitor/tv. What is the max length? You are going to say it depends on the type of cable. I'd like to know what is best. I'm assuming I'll have to use HDMI but I like to get an opinion on that as well.
    gbs

At 20 feet, you don't really have too much of a problem. HDMI is often said to be good up to 50 feet (see http://www.abccables.com/info-hdmi-cable-lengths.html for an explanation) while DVI and VGA are somewhat subject to the resolution, with higher resolutions being limited to shorter lengths. A good quality DVI cable can go up to 1280x1024 at around 25 feet without too much problem, though VGA at that length might show some signs of noise - VGA itself will typically go to 100 feet at the lowest resolution.
Generally speaking, co-ax type cables (meaning antenna and composite connections) will render longer cable runs more practical than otherwise possible with the likes of DVI, VGA and HDMI, but at poorer resolutions.

  • Long monitor cables... what do I need to use to connect across a room?

    Hi,
I have an odd situation where I need to connect a PPC G5 to a couple of flat screen Dell monitors about 15 feet away, and then a Dell computer to two other Dell monitors that are also several feet away.
So two computers, each CPU connected to two monitors across the room from each other. The two CPUs don't interact at all... this is just for the monitors.
Are there cables this long? And do they make them for the Mac? And what would be the term for that... AVI? I usually just use the cables that come with the monitors and that's it, so I don't know the names for the connections at all.

    Sorry,
The Dell monitors are 1908FP and P170S.
My G5 has one of each kind of connector plus one adaptor.
So, Do I look for a 10'+ cable with DVI to DVI? Or DVI to VGA? That's what I need to know and can't quite figure out.

Thanks for your help What about a HDMI to VGA cable? Would this work?
Where would you find one of those? Never heard of that. That is not to say they don't exist. Why would you want to try that? That would mean you are taking a digital signal, converting it to analog, then converting it back to digital.
Stick with the common methods as I described. Tell us if your monitor has HDMI or DVI inputs and I can be more specific as to what cable to use.

  • Which monitor cable: VGA or DVI?

I have a 21" Samsung SyncMaster 220wm LCD monitor. I have cables & adapters for both connections, but is there an advantage to either VGA or DVI?

I also forgot to mention some DVI monitors support digital encryption while no VGA monitors support digital encryption (used in blue ray playback and some HD movie playback)

" If all you have is a little rca yellow video out on the camera, hop on down to radio shack and get a bnc cable long enough to go from where you want to put the camera to the monitor, AND get a bnc to male rca adaptor.
Never mind hooking any audio to the monitor, the speakers in them are NG"
    Jim,
Thank you! Yes all I do have is the RCA yellow out. Thanks for making things simple to understand. I was afraid that I made the wrong monitor purchase (from Bogiesan's comments). But I know you all advise viewing your work on a good NTSC monitor. As far as the audio goes - I'm really not using it for that.
I'll let you know how it works out.
If I was to buy something down the line to make it work from computer to monitor - what should I purchase? A board, prosumer video camera...?

  • T530 lenovo thinkpad, need dual monitor cables/converters: just a USB to split into 2 VGAs?

I want to run dual monitors from my T530, or, better yet, from the 4337 docking station. Can I just get a USB with a split pair of VGA ends?

you want to run two extra monitor in addition to the internal LCD? The T530 with the series 3 workstation dock will be able to support that, if you want to use displayport or dvi out.
If you need vga, you can get a USB2VGA conveter, and use the other vga port on the laptop as the second vga source. If you need to have 2 vga to give the exact same video signal, you can get a vga to dual vga splitter cable.

  • Difference between monitor cables

I am thinking about buying a Mac Mini and was wondering about what type cable I would need for my Dell monitor 2005FPW. What is the difference between the HDMI-to-DVI adapter that comes with the Mini and the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter?
I have never owned an Apple computer so I am clueless.

I think the difference is in the maximum screen resolution:
    HDMI port 1920 x 1200
    Mini Display port: 2560 x 1600
An idea how to use two ports at the same time

  • Monitor cable

I have the adapter to hook up my ipad to a monitor but I don't have a cable and am not sure what it is called. The end I assume is universal is that goes into a normal computer monitor but the end that goes into the adapter is something I am not familar with. What is is called?
    BF

No way of being precise without knowing what connections your monitor supports. It could be VGA, DVI or HDMI. Consult the monitor's documentation. You'll need to have the appropriate adapter for your iPad, of course.
    Regards.

  • Video Insert Slot Doesn't Hold External Monitor Cable

Hi. My MacBook is hooked up sometimes to an external Dell display, but the cable does not lock in real well to the port on the laptop. Is there any way to lock that in for a tighter seal? I know there is a lock mechanism that hooks the AC magnetic cable from falling out. Anything similar to secure the video port?
    Thanks steveb

Just to be perfectly clear, you are connecting to the Dell from the Mac using a DVI port on the Dell, not a DVI to VGA cable, right?
So if you hot plug the cable, meaning both the Mac and the Dell are switched on, the Mac doesn't react at all to this? If that's the case, I would suspect a bad cable, bad adapter or a bad connection somewhere. You might also have to manually switch the Dell from looking for a signal over its VGA input to looking for a signal over its DVI input. There may be a front panel button labeled SOURCE for this, or else you may have to go into the Dell's menu system to make the switch.
