2 month old 21.5" iMac with 2 problems starting today.

I bought this iMac on September 14th of this year. Today it was having a hard time connecting to my wireless network. My Macbook Pro had no problems at all. I am not entirely sure that this is a computer problem because it was able to scan and find other networks in the neighbourhood, but my own that is just in the living room didn't show up at all. When it did show up it would just disappear a few minutes later.
The second issue has to do with the iMac turning off on its own. I would leave my room for about 30-40 minutes to eat or watch television, come back, and it would be off. I would have to start it up via the power button on the back. I ran the AHT thingie and it said no problems. I was wondering what I should try next before I bring this baby over to the apple store.
Thanks so much!

How could this have happened and what can I do to get it running again?

Didnt realize there was a response, late getting back to you.
Save your process files outside of the NI progam directory (you should have external backups already right ).  THey should not be deleted.

  • TS1702 My brand new iphone5 will not connect to my home wifi even though my ipad and old iphone do connect with no problem. What can I do?

My brand new iphone5 will not connect to my home wifi even though it recognizes it. My ipad and my old iphone4s connect with no problem. Any thoughts?

Although your other devices connect okay, it would be worth resetting your router by switching if off for disconnecting it from mains power for 2 minutes and then switch it on again.
Good luck and do report back.

  • Frozen iMac with Network problems

I have a 21.5 inch iMac purchased around Nov'12. Three days ago, suddenly no web page could be opened. I thought it to be a problem of my router but when I found out that I was able to use the Internet perfectly from my MacBook, I restarted my iMac but the problem remained. I shut it down & then restarted it... Now it showed only a white screen with the Apple logo on it and the waiting symbol. This remained till hours until I got irritated and switched off the power supply. I switched on the next consecutive days but the problem persisted. Today fortunately my iMac started.. The home screen has come... It is able to recognise my wifi & Ethernet but does not open any web page. Going to system preferences and then to Networks is hanging the system preferences window. When I force quit it, it says to file a report to Apple.... But the problem doesn't get solved... I always believed Apple as a company whose products never hanged up or faced hardware or software issues!!!

    Hello,
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions, reboot.
If you still have problems, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    10.4 instructions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

  • My computer is under 2 months old. It has so many problems. Am I alone?

My computer is under two months  old.  It freezes alot and I have had the screen turn to static on more than once when I am on the internet.

    Hi Formaine,
If your computer is under 2 months old it should still be covered under your manufacturers warranty.

  • 4-day old Core Duo iMac with Tiger is USELESS!  Or is it?

Starving student here. Saved up, begged, and borrowed and finally I received the iMac Intel G5, 20", with 2G RAM and Tiger. I bought it specifically to do film editing work.
NOW I find out that my film-editing software (Avid Xpress Pro 4.6 for Mac) WON'T RUN on Tiger. It wil only run on Panther and earlier!
So I call Apple to ask if I can install an earlier OS on my new iMac and the answer was YES! But then later on a seemingly well-informed Mac expert told me that the iMac Intel G5 will ONLY run Tiger and he can't believe Apple actually told me this nonsense. He also said that the G5's shipped out earlier this year (with the iSight, I guess) also won't support Panther (and therefore Avid) either!
Question: Is it true that the new Intel G5 iMac won't run on 10.3 or earlier?
Frankly, I don't trust Apple anymore so I'm asking the intelligent collective here. (Also, when I went to the Chat Support, the system doesn't even recognize the serial number! Hello, Apple, anybody maintaining the site?)
Because Apple jumped ahead of schedule, AVID won't be ready with their new compatible upgraded software for another 6 months! My only solution looks like going back to PCs. (But if I do, I'll NEVER try Mac again!)
Then Apple said they won't take back "customized" Macs (I had it "customized" with 2G of RAM). So now, unless I can an earlier OS onto this Mac, it's essentially a big, expensive paperweight. Or is it? What are my options?
Ultimately all I want is a Mac with a 20" monitor that will run Avid Xpress Pro 4.6. I'll swap, exchange, sell, buy, whatever, to get there.
    help

    kandabrewer, welcome to the discussions!
Sorry to read about your troubles. Generally, Macs cannot boot into an OS that is earlier than the release it shipped with. Much more so in your case, as 10.4.4 is the first OS X release that is Intel native. There is no way to run anything prior to 10.4.4 on your Intel iMac.
You are stuck with few options. You can sell your iMac and get a G5 model that will run your software or you can wait for Avid to get in gear and release a version that runs on the Intel Macs. I suppose that Avid Express will run through the Rosetta emulation, but I am not sure of that.
kanda, I am surprised to read that you jumped into such a major purchase without verifying that it would meet your needs. I will not beat you up for it as I am not flawless myself. This is a terrible lesson to learn and I honestly sympathize with you, but Apple really can't be held accountable for this in any way.
Perhaps you can contact Apple customer relations and see if there is anything they can do for you as an exception. Unfortunately, your only option with an iMac would be to buy a first generation G5 iMac as those were the only models that could boot into Panther.
    Best of luck.

  • 2 month old 21.5" imac, mark in corner of the screen

2 months ago i got my first mac, the mid 2011 21.5" imac (base model),
i've been using it happy as can be with absolutely zero problems, that is until 2 days ago when i noticed what looked like a smudge on the screen in the top right corner (approx 1inch long), the mark is only visable when the imac is powered off. after checking to see if it was just a smudge (it wasn't) i checked forums for similar problems, and i found that it was a heat issue.
i contacted apple, who then confirmed that it was infact a heat issue and that i should take it in to get repaired.
i am prepared to take it in to get fixed (im assuming just an lcd exchange) but i can't help but feel that a machine that cost £999 should not have this sort of issue this soon after purchase, then again i can't help but feel as though i'm making a big thing out of nothing (as it is only visable when powered off).
my question is this, this soon after purchase is it worth apple opening up my mac to replace the screen or is this likely an indicator of a re-occuring problem in which case would apple just replace my mac.
i know that seems like jumping the gun a little, but it's just the idea of a repair this soon after getting the mac.

i took my mac in to the service provider where i live and they said it had to be sent away to be repaired (achwell)
my concern wasn't really if they would repair it (i knew they would)
my concern is that this happened so soon after buying the imac, i have read other discussions about this problem and loads of folk say it is a re-occuring issue, im worried that after the repair this happens again, as i don't want to have to put my imac in for repairs every few months

  • New iMac With a problem

I Used Migration assistant to transfer files from my PC and now I have bunches of files on my 2 day old iMac that I don't want.  Is there a way to put it back to the way it came out of the box and I'll find another way to get the files.

You are very welcome, Jan.  Macs are actually very easy to work on and clean up as described, but it is always good to get someone to help out if you are uncertain.  Stick around on here and ask questions, this is a great place to learn.  Also, check with your Apple retail store, if there is one convenient, as they have free classes regularly scheduled to help new-to-Apple users.  Classes cover a wide variety to topics so check with them often to see what they have going.

  • 24"imac with display problems

I purchased my iMac from the local apple store on august 31st, that night after about 2 hours of use I noticed the screen had become quite pixelated I rebooted and everything was fine. Since that day I have had many of the same occurences. I have an appointment tomorrow with the local apple store to hopefully get this resolved. Has anyone else had similar problems? I have taken some pictures to show them at the apple store.

Hi, I have the same Problem with my iMac 24" 2.8 GHz. I used Rapid Weaver and suddenly there were a "pixelstorm" on my screen. I rebooted the mac and it worked perfect. But after a while using Rapid Weaver the screen turned off completely. That happend twice.
The Problem is, that this seems to be a fault in a lot of the new iMacs. A friend had the same Pixelstorm and sent the iMac back. Tomorrow he will get the replaced Mac.
Here you can see, what happens on his screen:

  • Have an iMac 2008/09 on starting today I have a white screen, an apple icon and a constant rotating sun, nothing else. I've tried turning off and disconnecting and reconnecting the power lead with the same results. Any thoughts? Many thanks Matt

Have a 2008/9 iMac on starting up today I have only a white screen, apple icon and a continuous  revolving sun. Have tried turning off and on and disconnecting and reconnecting the power with no affect - any thoughts or advice please. Thanks Matt

If your iMac came w/system DVDs, do the following:
Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:
Boot up from your DVD that originally came w/the iMac while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.
If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

  • Apple sent REFURBED Imac with Drive problems vs NEW ONE i bought

I bought a BRAND new Imac from the store 3 weeks ago and right away there were signs that it WAS NOT.
The first time I turned it on, it asked me to set up Panther and I did...over and over and over again because apparently theres a notorious "infinite loop" glitch that usually occurs when someone UPDATED the system. If this was brand new, you would think that there would be no need for that.
After 4 hours, I manage to bypass it by putting in the startup disks and virtually restarting hte computer.
Then, the startup disk won't spit out. I called Apple Support and they said well, theres no way to fix it unless I haul the entire system to apple or paid an ungodly sum of money to have a technician come.
This was day 1 of owning the computer.
Day 5, it miraculous spit out the startup cd.
Other problems: now my comp won't boot camp windows. it will partition the drive and then when I put in the disc, it will say 'no installation cd found.'It runs SUPER a lot of times despite me only having MS Word open. Today, I tried to get it to spit out the CD to install a router and its stuck again.
So my question is: a) how do i get the cd out again? (I tried the Command O fix, Cmd C fix, credit card)
and b) who do I contact to yell at apple for this? I strongly believe they sent me a used product and I don't want it to be replaced with another used product. I paid $200 over a Refurb for a new computer. Theres no email and everyone on the phone seems to be from a small Asian country with no idea what I'm talking about.
    c) If all else fails, I know apple users have been really successful in filing small claims suits but how would I go about doing so?

    {quote} a) how do i get the cd out again?{quote}
It is probably just a bad drive. Bring it in to have it serviced like Apple had recommended.
    {quote}b) who do I contact to yell at apple for this?{quote}
For what? Sounds like you received a computer with a bad optical drive which is covered under the warranty. You have absolutely no reason to yell at anyone, but the customer service number is in the box...
    {quote}c) If all else fails, I know apple users have been really successful in filing small claims suits but how would I go about doing so?{quote}
Talk to an attorney, but considering you refused to have the machine serviced or exchanged you would have little chance of anyone even caring about your problem.
    {quote}Theres no email and everyone on the phone seems to be from a small Asian country with no idea what I'm talking about.{quote}
Don't lie to us. There is an email with every sale that can be tracked by the customer as well as Apple. Considering the fact that you don't even know what you're talking about how do you expect someone else to respond? You claim that your machine came with Panther, however, no machine Apple has sold in the last two or more years would even be capable of running it. Any machine that would be capable of running Panther would not be able to run boot camp.
    {quote}I strongly believe they sent me a used product and I don't want it to be replaced with another used product.{quote}
Absolutely nothing you provided would give me, or anyone else, a reason to believe that you received a refurbished machine. Given the fact that you refused warranty repair and are paranoid about exchanging it, I don't understand how anyone on this forum can help you.

  • Imac keeps freezing Problem started with Snow Leopard

After I loaded in Snow Leopard, my Imac began to have beach balls and freeze ups. Then I loaded in Lion hopeing it would help but it
seems worse with constant freeze ups. I had the compauter in for a tune up at a Mac store but it was good for a few days, but now
it seems to happen more often. I dumped Flip for Mac thinking this was causing the conflict to no avail. I have run the utility program
and it did not come up with problems

Revert to Snow Leopard and solve your SBBOD issues. Upgrading never fixes underlying issues. See http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/sbbod.html for more details.

  • The new Firefox opens all the old tabs it closed with, when it starts. I'd rather just start a new session. How can I make that the default setting?

The new Firefox re-opens all the tabs it closed with; and, I'd rather just start a new session, as the default setting. How can I do this? It would make it easier on me, the machine, and the Internet feed, not to reload automatically a bunch of tabs that were just closed. There must be someway to fix this. This happens on my brother's Windows computer, as well; and, it's running Firefox 4. Thanks for your help.

Make that "Firefox ->Preferences -> General -> When Firefox starts: "Show my windows and tabs from last time" is not selected as this is not the default.
Basically this setting will make Firefox start with whatever windows and tabs that were last open when a user closes Firefox by way of File ->Quit/Exit as if Firefox was never closed.
