2 month old iMac, crashes during boot

Yesterday I received an automatic software update. Today it crashes during boot up. This is what I see:
panic (cpu 0 caller 0x003AA827) Unable to find driver for this platform: "ACPI"
Debugger called: <panic> .... then it spits out a bunch of hex codes...
Darwin Kernel 8.9.1
Sigh...

The two hardware issues that come to mind are loose or unseated ram module(s) and resetting the SMC. There have been quite a few folks reporting an issue with a unseated ram module that reinstalling fixed.

  • My 16 month old IMAC won't boot. Died?

The important stuff...All my data is backed up and no I did not buy the extended warranty on this and the one year I had expired in December. I use this for my business so today I am just losing money. I had never had any issues with my IMAC until last evening. I grabbed a soda and came back to my office and my screen was a dark gray...like going on standby but I couldn't wake it up. I had to do a hard shut down (hold power button). I restarted and the OS came up fine, logged on and about 5 minutes later it happened again. Hard restart. Worked okay for a moment and then the screen started jumping and flickering. That was the last time I saw my OS.
I have tried to restart using various methods found here and on the interenet. Recovery mode, safe mode, single user mode. I sometimes get a blue screen but most times the white screen Apple logo and busy wheel for a little while and it stops on a blank white screen.
I am not sure if I am having a software or hardware problem. I do not have a disk to reinstall the OS. I am a pretty savvy Windows repair person and do make a bit of money from it but have never opened up a Mac before.
So your opinions to what is going on with my IMAC? Is there something else I could try? If it is a hardware issue, are these IMACs complicated to repair and where would one get parts?
After being a Windows user until I bought this last year, it is a bit disappointing that this expensive (relative to a Dell for the same money) machine lasts but a year. I was happy I switched until last night.
    Can you help? Thanks

If you can run Apple Hardware Test in EXTENDED MODE at least 2-3 times in succession. If it reports any errors then you know you have a hardware issue and need to take it in for repair. It's highly unusual it would fail after a year however if it's something like a HD they can fail at any time. Remember Apple (nor Dell or HP) make HD's they supplied by 3rd party manufacturers. In the future it's always smart to buy AppleCare, however that's water under the bridge now. If there is a hardware failure it's going to have to be fixed at your expense.
Before doing the AHT I'd also recommend starting in Safe Mode . Give that a try first. Also try rebooting in the Recovery Partion, and run Disk Utility - Repair Permissions and Repair Disk.

  • Just had a fatal crash of my new 1TB fusion drive on my 3 month old Imac 27". Is there anyone elese having this issue? And have you been able to recover data from that Crashed Fushion Drive?

Since it's a new machine, contact Apple's Support, formerly Apple Express Lane and let them deal with it.

Try an SMC Reset. (System Management Controller)
Shutdown>unplug from power for ten minutes>press and hold in the power button for ten seconds>startup again.
Also try a PRAM Reset. (Parameter RAM)
Shutdown. At the bootup chime, hold down CMD-Option-P-R together, wait for two more chimes, total three, then let go of all keys to finish booting,
If this doesn't do it, run the Hardware Test in Extended

  • Is it safe/prudent to install Mavericks on my nine month old iMac

I purchased this iMac last summer:
    iMac, 21.5-inch, Late 2012. Processor:  2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory:  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Software:  OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion)
It is running only those apps that came with the computer plus Firefox, Flip4Mac and Adobe Reader.
It is connected to an HP Deskjet 3510 printer....that I don't want to mess with as far as changing settings.
After following this forum since the introduction of Mavericks, I am very leery of installing it.  Prior to my present nine month old iMac, I had a four year old iMac that "went south" after updating to Snow Leopard.  Not again.
We also have in our family a recently purchased MacBook Pro running Mavericks with no problems. It is operating quite nicely with the iMac which is still operating on Mountain Lion.

Make a backup of your ML installation before you install Mavericks, so you can revert easily if you don't like Mavericks.
    Yes, that's good advice.
    Another option is to...
    1) Make a bootable backup of your setup on an external hard drive.  SuperDuper is good for this.
    2) Update the backup to Mavericks.
    3) Test the  backup for as long as you want, focusing especially on the things you normally do.
If the backup passes all your tests, you can use SuperDuper to copy the backup back to your Mac's hard drive, replacing it's contents entirely with the new updated to Mavericks system.
If you have two external hard drives, one could be the backup of your Lion set up, while the other could contain the Mavericks version of your setup.  This way you could have your cake and eat it too, Lion AND Mavericks.
I would suggest that you DO NOT just cross your fingers, hope for the best, and update Lion to Mavericks without the backups as Apple seems to suggest.  As you've seen, this might work, or it might lead to a calamity for your Mac, and a nervous breakdown for you.
It's entirely possible to make the move safely, it just takes a bit more work than you've been led to expect, that's all.
    Good luck!

  • HT202853 I have many project made in move HD that are not updating to the new iMovie 10 on my new iMac.  Why is this not working as stated?  How do I get my projects back from backup after old iMac crashed?

I have many projects made in imovie HD that are not updating to iMovie 10 on my new iMac.  Why is this not working as stated on the article HT202853?  How do I get my projects back from backup after old iMac crashed?

    According to:
Update projects and events from previous versions of iMovie in iMovie (2014) - Apple Support
you can update from iMovie versions 7, 8 and 9, but iMovie HD is iMovie 6.
Maybe you can update in two steps, first from iMovie 6 to iMovie 7, 8 or 9 then to iMovie 10.
    Geoff.

  • Have 2009 time capsule  with 6 month old iMac  very slow cox said i needed to replace with a new time machine with newer wifi ??

have 2009 time capsule with 6 month old iMac  very slow  ...cox said to replace with new router or extreme with new wifi ???? confused

Replace the Time Capsule with a new one or replace your router with an Airport Extreme Base Station that has faster Wi-Fi. Or you could just connect your old Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection from the Time Capsule to the computer's Ethernet port.

  • Why is Facetime installed on my 3 month old iMac for free?

    I'm trying to answer this:
Why is factime installed on my 3 month-old iMac SnowLeopard for free?  Was it the update to 10.6.7 (on a system with the new "facetime HD camera" - not an iSight - that did it?
I have an older iMac where it isn't installed on - and am trying to figure out why?  Both are Snow Leopard.  Why do I have to pay $0.99 when it came for free on a Snow Leopard system?

I would say it is related to the purchase date. FaceTime is included in 10.6.6~8 OEM discs.

  • 3 month old iMac produces little clicking sounds coming from the top

As of today, my three month old iMac is started to make little clicking sounds! It comes from to upper side. There in the neighborhood of the iSight. What is this???? It sounds like a hard drive. Is the HD located near the camera? I need a silent computer because I record audio in front of it. That was the main reason I bought the MAC, three months ago, brand new out of the box.
After three months of software headaches (leopard) , the hardware troubles start too!! My Compaq Armada Pentium 3 laptop is still flawless after years and years of heavy use. I also ran Windows XP for more than 3 years without having to reformat. I have reinstalled Leopard 3 times in 3 months.
    Whats going on with Apple?

Contact Apple and arrange for warranty repair.

  • I have just about given up trying to download Mavericks for my 6-month old iMac running OS X 10.8.5. Each time it gets to around 996mb and stops. Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks Giancarlo. The problem turned out to be my modem/wireless router, which has now been replaced and the problem solved.

  • My 3 month old IMAC has no sound all of a sudden.  I have checked the F12 button, and it is turned all the way up. My 15 year old was on it last night, so some setting was changed. Any idea?

My 3 month old IMAC 27 inch has no sound all of a sudden. F12 button turned on and up. Still no sound. Any other ideas?

Couple things to check.  Hold the Option key down as you click on the Volume icon on the Menubar.  Set the output device to Internal speakers.
Also check that headphones aren't plugged in.

  • IMac Crashes during updating of thumbnails

My daughter's iMac 24 (8,1 from 2008) had a problem last week.  Took it to Apple.  They first said it was the HD, then said it was the video card. They called and said they could not boot from the HD, but could from external (which they couldn't do before the video card was replaced.  Asked to wipe the HD, which was fine since I have a TM back up (and a SuperDuper back-up at work).  They said not to restore everything from TM, but to only restore apps, then bring things over manually....something a possible software issue.
Fired up the iMac, brought over movies and documents.  During the process to move the photos, the iMac crashed.  Long story short, I moved the library from TM to the pictures folder today.  It took a few hours (lots of photos).  Opened iPhoto and it said it was updating thumbnails.  Before the progress bar moved, the iMac rebooted.  I reopened iPhoto and clicked "finish later" re the thumbnails.  The library opened, all the folders/albums were there, but no thumbnails.  The photos seemed fine.
I then restared iPhoto holding down option-command.  I first repaired permissions, then it went to the indexing of the thumbnails.  No progress on the status bar and the gear stopped spinning and the iMac rebooted.
Again, option-command and I tried to rebuild the database (the fourth choice on the list).  It took less than 10 seconds and the iMac rebooted.  The crash report is below.
I used iPhoto Library Manager (3rd party program) to rebuild the library as well.  That seems to have worked (it's still going).  Anyone see anything in the report that would be of concern?  I'm thinking that perhaps I have a bigger problem than the video card (perhaps a logic board issue).
    Thanks in advance.

They said not to restore everything from TM, but to only restore apps, then bring things over manually....something a possible software issue.
Not sure what this is about or what it means with reguards to iPhoto or what you did to "bring things over manually"
But the iPhoto library is a SQLite database and must always be treated as a single entity - you can not not manually resotre pieces of it and use it - you must use the Time Machine application and restore the iPhoto library intact as one single restore

  • My less than 5 month old imac 21.5 desktop is causing me some concern,it is slow to start, problems with bluetooth.problems with wi fi.whe its turned off i notice a graying in the four corners of the screen, this is i think the effects of overheating.

my imac is less than 5 months. old tommorow it goes to murcia for ¿repair?.a 25.1 1mac desktop is a formidable piece of workmanship but thatdoes not stop anything going wrong,as ive found out.in the last month it has begun to heat rapidly thus i think causing a graying in the 4 corners of the screen, this is ugly.as i keep my mac in pertfect grace ie free of dust and prints, also it freezes frequently and downright frustrating.has anyone else had similar problems.on a footnote i beleive apple care will come thru shining, but an answer to my question, wich is why in only 5 months has my imac gone wrong.

Sorry to hear you're having issues with your Mac, but just like pretty much everything else, things can go wrong.
The key is what Apple will do about it now that it has gone wrong. Because you are under warranty, contact AppleCare and explain the issues you are experiencing. There is a chance that your iMac may have to be sent in for repair.
My iMac has had issues since first bought in late 2009, in one form or another and has been repaired three times. AppleCare are going to replace the item sometime in the future, I have no idea when, but I have been without a working Mac for over three weeks now, actually it might be over four weeks.
As you said, AppleCare will sort the problem out for you, let's hope it's not a lengthy repair and they get you up and running quickly.

  • 18 month old iMac 24" - is licence included?

    Hi,
Just purchased an 18 month old 24" 3.02Ghz iMac. Can't see GarageBand installed.
Does this come with iLife licence to use GarageBand? What version would it have licence for?

The previous owner should have gotten it with iLife, and he/she should have given you the original disk with iLife on it. Did you get a disk named "Software Restore 2" or similar?
