2 more USB 3.0 ports on all MacBook Pro laptops?

I love the Apple Laptops and Smartphones. Not a big fan of how the new Retina Display notebooks have been assembled (non-removable flash modules). I've always wondered why these notebooks only have 2 USB ports, especially since the new Retina notebooks are about going wireless. How about more connectivity options, an external blu ray writer compatibility while you're a it.

You can get an external Blu-ray reader/writer from OWC (and a number of other companies). I have one from OWC on my 'wish list'. You can also purchase software that will allow you to view Blu-ray commercial discs on your Mac - http://download.cnet.com/Mac-Bluray-Player/3000-13632_4-75453324.html.
If you need more than two USB ports, you can always buy a desktop computer or buy a powered hub. I find that I have quite enough (but then I've three 'extra' on my Apple Thunderbolt Display).

What problems specifically? If you have a problem you should start your own thread and explain the problem in detail.
External USB devices including hard drives and DVD work fine on the new Macbook Pros.

  • USB ports in my macbook pro stop working

For a few months now the USB ports in my Macbook Pro stop working. The mouse is unable to move the pointer, therefore, I have to use the trackpad to select things. Then, when i try to shut it down it refuses to shut down, so I have to hold the on/off button to turn it off. When I turn on the laptop, the problem goes away. It's been happening more often for the last few weeks. Is there a problem with the software or is it the fact that I never used a base to raise the laptop, until recently, to let air in below so it doesnt heat up so much?
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi h,
    Try an SMC Reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • I have a MacBook Pro laptop purchased in June 2011, and the superdrive no longer works.  Rather than have it replaced, I'll buy a 3rd party superdrive that plugs into the USB port.  Does it need it's own power source, or will the USB port suffice?

I have a MacBook Pro laptop purchased in June 2011, and the superdrive no longer works.  Rather than have it replaced, I'll buy a 3rd party superdrive that plugs into the USB port.  Does the external superdrive need it's own power source, or will the USB port provide enough power?

The Apple external SuperDrive actually exceeds the allowed power draw. Because of this, it is only trouble-free on certain models that accommodate this excess.
All others require an external Power source.

I would do another SMC reset. If nothing changes you should take the computer in to an Apple store for a free diagnostic. You should make an appointment.

  • Do all Macbook Pro computers come with HDCP components?

On my laptop, when I attempt to purchase an HD movie, it says that I cannot, because I do not have HDCP components. I've been in the market for a new computer for a while -- my trackpad is practically broken, two of my USB ports do not function, and the computer simply will not charge, so I have to keep it plugged in at all times for it to be functional. I am not very fond of the Macbook Air (not enough space) or the iMac (much too large) and, thus, have narrowed my Apple-related choices down to the Macbook Pro.
I was wondering if all Macbook Pro computers (including the Retina display computers) come with HDCP components, because I only plan on purchasing one if I'll be able to purchase and play HD movies from the iTunes store.
Thanks in advance for your help!

"A display that supports HDCP with a screen resolution of 1280 x 800 or higher."
But how do I know if the screen supports HDCP? Or is it saying that all computer screens with a resolution of 1280 x 800 or higher support it?

I get the following error message when I connect a usb ethernet adapter to my new MacBook Pro: Unsupported - You cannot use an Apple USB Modem with this computer. I live where we only have dial-up and the Apple Store said this is what I need. In addition, when I connect the phone to the connecter it falls out, it will not click in.

Why are you using a usb ethernet adaptor? Just plug the modem into the usb port.

  • Lighting bolt port shuts down macbook pro

lighting bolt port shuts down macbook pro once the cable is pugged in. What is the cause of this problem

    Hi reginaldt,
If your Mac unexpectedly turns off when you plug in a cable (unclear if you are describing a USB Lightning cable or a Thunderbolt cable) and you have checked to make sure there is no debris in either the cable jack or port, you may want to try resetting the PRAM and SMC:

  • My Thunderbolt-port equipped 15" Macbook Pro (Early 2011) works with other monitors but not with my Thunderbolt Display.

I just got a thunderbolt monitor and excitedly, I plugged my early 2011 thunderbolt port equipped 15" Macbook Pro (running 10.8.2) into it and... no image on the monitor.
Ok, so I know that the TB display works because I plugged a mid-2012 13" Macbook Pro into it (running 10.7.5) and it works perfectly. In fact, I'm using it to type this message right now.
    Other details:
    - in both the displays preference pane and about this mac/system info, the 15" mbp recognizes the display, yet... no picture either clamshell open or closed. restarted with it plugged in and not plugged in, no difference. also? sound comes through the monitor.
    - ALSO, i plugged in a mini displayport monitor into the 15" port, and it displayed fine, so the port seems to be doing something.
    see my conundrum?

It should just work - if it's not working with your 2011 model (works just fine with my 15" late 2011, right out of the box) I would get in touch with AppleCare as soon as possible and see what the senior techs may have to say...

  • My keyboard on macbook pro (laptop) is acting weird. One key is not responding at all. Have verified using Keyboard viewer and some other keys are printing the unresponsive character at random.

my keyboard on macbook pro (laptop) is acting weird. One key is not responding at all. Have verified using Keyboard viewer and some other keys are printing the unresponsive character at random. "z" is the unresponsive character.
Is it a damaged keyboard ?
The laptop is just 2 months old, will Apple replace it with a new one if its indeed a damaged keyboard or just repair, I use it for official purposes so being without a laptop is not much of an option.

No one here works for Apple, so we don't know what Apple might or might not do.  If it's a genuine defect, they will of course repair it under warranty.  It is not their responsibility if it effects your ability to work or not, so that's on you.
If, however, they determine that the key is problematic as a result of your misuse of the laptop, then everything is on you.  And trust me, if they find a glob of dried up beer or coffee there, they will charge you.
Your only choice is to take it in for repair.

Use a alias, but you might have to use a zip code that matches the location used.
Also if you click the right button there is a way to bypass the registration, like register later or something, Apple has it hidden. Also to bypass the internet connection to send the registration off.
Never place your name on a Mac or PC, it's spread throughout the entire machine, in emails, on the network in plain sight etc.
