2 networked Macs.. cant see 1 in Finder sidebar

I have an iMac & Mini on the same wireless home network, both with 10.5.2. I can not get the the Mini to show under "servers" on the iMac's Finder, yet the iMac does show on the Mini's Finder.
-Both have File sharing enabled & are sharing the whole harddrive.
-I have both firewalls set too allow everything.
-I can use screen sharing on the iMac to see the Mini fine.
-I can still access the Mini from Go -> Network.
-Finder sidebar prefs on both do have all the options under "Servers" checked.

Sorry for the delayed response, and doubly sorry that I don't have an answer for you. However, I did want to share with you that I'm having the exact same issue, albeit between an iMac and a new octocore Mac Pro. Just got the iMac two days ago - it sees the Pro tower and lists it in the SHARED line item in the Finder sidebar. The Pro tower, however, does not list the iMac in the Finder sidebar. I CAN connect to the iMac from the Mac Pro by using the 'Connect to Server' option in the Finder, but the way I figure it, I shouldn't have to do that.
Bummer, but not a showstopper .....
Based on all the messages in this forum, I suspect Apple are working diligently to clean up Leopard networking. Seems to be a bit of a rat's nest at the moment, and inconsistent, at best.

  • My mac cant see my xp pc on starcraft

hey im new to a mac and both my pc and mc cant see each other when we are in the starcraft multiplayer area. we are not in the battle net. please respond.

Hi Eric, welcome to Apple Discussions!
I play a bit of Starcraft, both on Battle.net and on our home LAN here. The issue is almost certainly a firewall issue. What you've got to do is make sure to open the correct firewall ports on your Mac, PC, and on your router. The simplest way to do this is simply to turn off all three firewalls. If you turn off all three firewalls, and connect both computers to the same router then they should see each other within the game. You could disconnect your internet connection from the router while playing for security when the firewall is down. Then, just reconnect the internet connection to the router and re-enable the firewalls after your game. Or, you could open the ports manually and leave them open all the time, while the firewalls are still on.
Blizzard's support says to make sure both TCP and UDP port 6112 are open for incoming and outgoing traffic. On the Mac, this is easy. Just go to System Preferences, and choose Security. Click the Firewall tab, and click the "+" sign. Navigate to, and choose your Starcraft application. Then make sure it is set to "Allow incoming connections". That's all you need to do on the Mac.
You'll need to open TCP and UDP port 6112 on your router and your PC as well. If you're not sure how, consult the documentation that came with them. If you have any questions, or need clarification, shoot!

  • Mac cant see the wifi network if i dont get close enough which was not an issue before

Hi. I have a macbook pro OSX 10.8.4
At the office my mac can not see our network router if i dont get close enough.
This was not an issue before i could directly connect it at my desk. now when i turn the
computer on i need to take to mac as closest as i can get to the router ( in next room ) wait for connection
and return to my room. and this way i still can get full signal.
and also a windows laptop on my desk and even my iphone can find the router and connect with no problem
    at my office.
    any ideas ?

Hi! It's been a while but here's the latest update on the case.
(And yeah,I've been struggling until today to find a solution...Danny's personal advice: don't move to Italy if you don't wanna get lost in a Customer Service nightmare...)
Anyhow, it turned out to be as simple as this:
    1) Create a location dedicated to the home network.
    2) Insert PPPoE user name and password given by ISP.
    3) Connect.
    4) Browse wirelessly.
...I feel a little dumb overlooking this option....but, I still have some doubts reg the procedure.
Why did I have to create a dedicated location?
Why do I have to use PPPoE rather than DHCP?
    Thanks mate,
    D

  • Home sharing suddenly stopped working. All devices have home sharing enabled, all devices are using the same network but cant see each other

I've gone through all the Googling and support forums I can handle.. They all tell me to the same things. I have done everything required and quite honestly Home Sharing was working for quite some time. So I don't think I changed anything.
The only culprit I can think of is the wireless network. We had to call Comcast and reset our service, and they gave us a new modem. Our router is also new.
Is there a setting in a router that lets multiple devices connect but blocks each of them to each other? That seems to be what's happening.
Apple TV2 can see our connection no problem and can download trailers (downloading movies never works though!!!), we have two Macs and two iPhones and all are on our wireless and none can connect to one another using Home Sharing.
Please help!! This is an odd one!!

I believe this is true. Alas, I wrote this a while ago and the link is dead. I can't totally remember what the issue was.
But, looking through the PDF for the Linksys e2000, searching for 'filter multicast' I see this:
Filter Multicast The multicasting feature allows for multiple transmissions to specific recipients at the same time . If multicasting is permitted, then the Router will allow IP multicast packets to be forwarded to the appropriate computers . Select this option to enable the filter . This option is disabled by default.
And in my settings it's been enabled. So maybe try that.
Filter multicast is under Securtiy>Firewall after you log in as admin.
Why it's disabled by default I do not know.
Good luck! Hope this is the solution!! Apple should warn people of this feature conflict to Apple TV buyers.

  • I was told in live chat i have a $100 credit added to my account but i cant see it or find it?

Because there was a mishap with my bill and they gave me an $100 credit but its no where to be seen

Thanks for reaching out for assistance zheltz96. May I ask what mishap did you have on your bill that warranted a $100 credit/adjustment? Keep in mind that any unbilled adjustment will show on the bill once the bill cycle completes. If your bill cycle hasn't arrived then the credit will not be viewable yet.
    Thank you…

  • Cant see external Hard Drive connected to TC

    Hey Guys
Love my TC but still cant get it to work as I want. I will list my challenges seperatley.
The first one is I have a hard drive connected by USB but I cant see it in Finder? I can see everything on my TC but not the connected HD.
    Thanks in Advance
    AC
(Its the latest TC with latest software)

    What Bob suggested should work.
You can also plug the USB drive into a Mac.. Mac OS can read NTFS but not write to it. You could then copy the files to the TC. My experience is Mac reads NTFS very slowly..
You do want to get the PC working I think, by ethernet to the TC and copy the files.
If this is just temporary that is fine.. using the TC for a data store and mixing with Time Machine is not such a great idea.
IMHO USB drives are cheap.. go and buy a new one. So you can copy the files direct from one disk plugged into your computer to the drive correctly connected to the TC or to the Mac.. Keep the old USB as a backup or format it and use it for something else.

  • TM cant see Disk on on other Mac on Network

    Hello,
TM cannot see the Internal HD on my Mac Pro from MacBook Pro (MBPro). Both Macs are running OS X 10.8 ML with all Apple Updates installed.
Internal HD's on Mac Pro mount in the Finder fine on MBPro and I can copy files to and from the Mac Pro Hard Internal & External Drives.
TM was working after upgrading from Lion to ML.
Had to delete the TM Backup, now cannot setup TM again, as Mac Pro HD does not appear in TM Disk Window.
Have tried setting Hard Disk not to sleep on each Mac, resetting SMC on each Mac, using Ethernet across Network instead of WiFi, (this worked previously by the way).
Any suggestions on what to do?
    Will try AppleCare on Monday.

Have you tried removing temporary internet files of ie8 yet? And not by means of a 3rd party software but just in ie8 options menu.
What could have happened is that the player didn't load properly the first time and now the improperlly loaded files are cached.

  • I dont see computers on the network on the side bar in finder

Hi I am new to mac ( 2 days )
I am connected to a wireless network with a couple of pc's but I cant see them in the finder bar or any other network items....
I have enabled sharing on the Pc's and I can see the mac book on them and transfer files etc but cant see anything on the mac book
I am using OS X snow leopard
    Can anyone help ?

Assuming that your settings are correct (see above), I decided to change something to see if I could get my smb shares to show up under Shared more consistently. Previously I had problems connecting with my iBook if it went to sleep. And, it too would disappear from Shared if it went to sleep. So, I did my best to keep all the machines from sleeping. Now, no machine has disappeared from Shared unless I let it sleep accidentally or intentionally. Note that there appears to be a positive correlation between (a) a share disappearing and the length of time a it has been asleep and (b) shares disappearing and the numbers of shares asleep. Of, course, this work around requires you to prevent sleeping on machines you think you will want to connect with in the "near" future.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
AirPlay Mirroring is supported on your Mac, but it needs OS X Mountain Lion (10.8). See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
    You have two possibilities:
    1. Make a backup, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion to upgrade to this OS X. Then, you will find the AirPlay Mirroring icon at the top right of the display, on the menu bar, or on System Preferences > Displays.
    2. Keep OS X Lion and use AirParrot > http://www.airparrot.com
Both options work properly, but I recommend AirPlay Mirroring as it doesn't need a third-party program

That does not work on model year older then 2010 and really doesn't work on any older then late 2011 models.
You will need a set of original system dvd disc thjat are always sypplied with every mac sold before Lion came out. Systems older then late release early 2011 models.
If you don't have them you kcan order a replacement set from apple by calling them. Have the serial number of you mac handy.

my iphoto wont open since i updated my mac, please help? it says i need to install an iphoto library upgrader which I have installed but still cant see my photos.

What version of iPhoto are you using? 9.6 is the current version.
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

  • Networked Macs see Windows server, but suddenly not the internet

My girlfriend works at a small business running about 10 PCs and a Windows server. Also on the network are about 15 VOIP telephones. She's had an emac on the network working fine for a few months. It was connecting to the server and the to the internet. Then one day, no more internet. (None of the PCs are experiencing this problem.) Coincidentally, the next day a new Mini arrived. We set it up (to 10.4.3) and it saw the server, it saw the internet. Everything was beautiful and then poof. No more internet. It was working when she left work, it even received POP mail between her leaving last night and coming in this morning.
(I don't think this is the culprit, but it's worth mentioning that first thing this morning, she installed Microsoft Office. After she installed Office, the internet no longer worked. She didn't check her internet connection before installing the new software, but I suspect this is not a related issue. The emac does not have Office installed at all.)
The macs have been restarted and put to sleep and then woken up. All of the PCs get their internet connection after routing through the VOIP phones and so do the macs. We've taken the phone out of the equation, but still no luck.
Sorry this is such a vague description of the problem, but I don't know so much about inter-platform networking, so I'm not sure what to look for. And I don't know anything about TCP/IP or other networking protocols, so if there are any clues in the packets, I wouldn't see them. The most puzzling thing here is that it was working fine, and after seemingly nothing has changed, now it's not.
Mac OS X (10.4.3)   macs on a PC network

It looks like your getting an address okay. Have you tried out a variety of applications to see if it only happens on certain ones? (eg, web browser but not iTunes) If it's okay to run that at work, anyway
Some explanations of the gibberish below:
en0: That's the short name for your network card. If you have multiple cards or other manufacturers this can be different but it's fairly standard. There will also be another device called lo0 displayed usually. This is called a loopback device and points to you machine. It will have the address 127.0.0.1 It's a good way to test servers or other things running on your machine, by connecting to that address. It's not really useful in this case, but knowledge is power
The flags indicate what the status of the network card is. It's up, and running normally for most networks. The mtu setting indicates the size of packets of data transmitted by your network card. 1500 is fairly common, but some networks or ISPs may note a smaller size in their support pages. If no one has been monkeying with your network recently, assume this is okay.
inet6 is support for the eventual switch to a better internet addressing standard. nothing to worry about here.
inet 192.168.50.54 is you address on the local network. So you're getting an IP at least. If a Windows machine on the network has taken that address as well, that can cause problems. It shouldn't happen, but it does occasionally. The windows box will typically spit up a warning dialog on the screen pretty quickly if that happens. I haven't run into it on my mini yet so I'm not sure if Internet Connect will pop up the icon with the lightning symbol or nor.
The netmask is a hexidecimal number showing the range or "scope" that your subnet (the area of the network you're in) occupies. FFFFFF80 is equal to 255.255.255.128. In this case it means that your subnet is restricted to a range of 127 addresses. If your address and the address of your internet gateway weren't in that range together you'd have a problem, because they wouldn't recognize each other as being part of the same subnet.
But the broadcast address would indicate that they are. Both fit within the range of 192.168.50.1 and 192.168.50.127
If those machines couldn't see each other then instead of your 192.168.x.x address, you'd see the 169.x.x.x address I mentioned, and would be off the network.
So, now that you've been bombarded with all that, it looks like you're okay on the local network so now the task is finding out why you can't see out.
Try a few different apps and see if they succeed, like running the software update, etc. If they work, then it's possible your browsers may need to be configured to use a proxy server to get to the net. That's a lesson for later
    Here's my ifconfig info:
    en0:
    flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAS
    T> mtu 1500
    inet6 fe80::20d:93ff:fe78:6496%en0 prefixlen
    64 scopeid 0x4
    inet 192.168.50.54 netmask 0xffffff80
    broadcast 192.168.50.127
    ether 00:0d:93:78:64:96
    media: autoselect (100baseTX <full-duplex>) status:
    active
    supported media: none autoselect 10baseT/UTP
    <half-duplex> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex> 10baseT/UTP
    <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 100baseTX <half-duplex>
    100baseTX <full-duplex> 100baseTX
    <full-duplex,hw-loopback>
    I don't see any "169" , but I don't really have any
idea what else is going on here. Any help would be
really appreciated. It's so frustrating when you
finally get a Mac in a PC office and then it doesn't
    work.

  • Mac Mini - Wifi Issue - Not Finding Established Network

Purchased and tried to setup a late 2012 Mac Mini (2.3 Quad-Core).
    Current Wifi Setup
    - Cable Modem into Airport Extreme.
    - Airport Extreme (Base) is pushing to (2) Airport Expresses.
    - (1) of the (2) Airport Expresses is underneath the desk where the Mac Mini is located.
    - The devices currently on the network include: (1) MacBook, (1) Apple TV, (2) iPads and (2) iPhones. Everything is connected to the network and running properly.
    Issue
One of the first things I attempted to do when I started up the computer, was join my home network. I searched for the network, found it and entered in the password. The Mac mini would not accept my password (the password is correct), claiming either password was incorrect or the connection timed out. I went to the Airport Utility and noticed the Mac mini was not locating/finding the Airport Extreme (Base), but was attempting to connect to the Airport Express underneath the desk. An important note the Mac Mini and the Airport Extreme are approximately 20 feet apart.
Here are some the methods I used to attempt a fix:
I turned off the Mac Mini Wifi and reset all (3) routers.
I updated the firmware of all (3) routers, reset them again.
I updated the OSX to 10.8.2
I ended up loading the Airport Utility on my Ipad and taking it back to where the Mac mini was located. From the attached picture, you can see on the bottom the Ipad correctly showing the Network and the on top show Mac Mini still searching for the Network.
I ended up hooking the Mac mini though Ethernet using the Airport Express underneath the desk, which is a fix however that an issue if the wifi is not working.
I’m currently at work and will have a chance to work on the computer this evening, does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this issue?
    Thank you in advance.
