2 new drives - still no recognition

Ok, this is getting beyond silly / frustrating to a whole new level. I installed a new hard drive, worked only briefly, locked up, hard shutdown, restricted/folder comes up. I put in the old drive, every things fun. I do some suggested diagnostics on the new drive, put it back in, now it's not seen. I put it an external case, works fine. So, frag it, I go buy another new drive, put it it, same thing - only it's never even seen or recognized, not in Disc Utility or Disc Warrior. In an external drive, it works.
Somehow my computer is locking any drive out except the original, which I put back in, boots fine. These drives are sata, apple compatible...only they ain't.
***!?!?!

Here is how I made a GUID partition, I'm pretty sure you did it the same way, but if you did not, here is how I did mine:
1) Open Disk Utility and select the hard drive that will be used
2) You can erase everything, but if there is nothing to erase, just skip this
3) Under Partitions, you have to select 2 partitions
4) Now the "Options" button will show up.
5) Click on it, and select the GUID setup (I believe that it is the first one)
6) Now you can change how many partitions (1, 2, 3, etc) and the options button will still be there for you to look if it is still under the GUID setup.
7) When your done selecting how many partitions you want, you can now format it.
8) Then you can install the OS. **MAKE SURE THAT IT IS INSTALLED IN THE FIRST PARTITION!!! It has to be...I'm pretty sure you know this already though**
I hope everything will work now, as that is the best advice I can give.
I did this on a Western Digital 250gb Passport external hard drive then I placed the hard drive into my Macbook, and everything worked flawlessly.
Hope this helps.
Sorry if it doesn't.

    Hi,
Shutdown the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter, remove the battery, and then hold down the Power button for a full minute.  Then re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter and see if this helps the issue.

  • Still no new driver .... ?????

Pfff , been checking for the last 2 months EVERY day on the site and still no new driver for the X-fi cards ...
Am I the only one who's being dri'ven to insanity with this ?
    WINDOWS 7 x64 DRIVER NOW PLZ !!!!

    i don't get it though...
i mean, they are the biggest company on sound cards, right? they have personnel to work on drivers since they release them, don't they?
so what's the reason of this? there are creative personnel looking in the forum and they MUST know that we are unpleased by the whole situation. are they not telling their bosses that we, the users, are unpleased? are the bosses cocky enough as to think "ooh, who gives a dam. it's their problems, not ours". or are the driver programmers not able to code and solve problems faster than........... this? i mean... are they typing a letter per day?
ffs, asus releases drivers for their xonar faster and they are a company involved in so many different things. and realtech.. well, realtech releases drivers like what.. once a month?
and let's not refer to the support attitude... ask away a question in the forums. the answer not only will fail, it's gonna be a lol answer too. something like "go and check the faq. read the sticky link" etc
i really regret that i got me the x-fi titanium fatality pro i got. the sound is cracking more than all the buildings in Haiti together. there is a sound level up+down problem like someone's playing with the volume from say 55 to 56 and back on and on and on and on and on.. but hey, sometime it stops (it's called AI my friends ), asio drivers really suck, mic is on when changing modes and if you leave the volume high, you're doomed. and so many other problems all of us have.
oh well, there's one thing i know. i never, ever gonna buy a creative product again. this is the last one for me. i just hope we have a new driver to clear out all bugs (LOL) and i'll stick with it until it dies. then, i'm gonna get a sound card that won't have anything to do with creative.
anyways, sorry for the long a tiring reply guys.
oh, and support group? hope you won't delete this reply. it took me some time to write (english isn't my mother tongue) thank you
    Cheers !!!

  • New hard drive still won't be recognized!

Hello, recently I've been having several problems with my mid-2009 MacBook Pro; 2 minute beachballs and failure to startup. So I've purchased a new new WD Scorpio Black thinking it was a HD issue, but after replacing my old HD with the WD, Disk Utility wouldn't recognize the new drive. So I searched around and found out that Hard Drive Cable failure is an issue on this certain MacBook. So I ordered a new Hard Drive cable and just replaced that today, thinking that my new HD would be recognized. However after going into Disk Utility via the OS X Install DVD, my new Hard Drive was still not recognized. So I put back my old stock HD and it was recognized instantly and seems to not have any issues anymore. Could it be that the drive is DoA? Or should I purchase an external enclosure and format my new hard drive that way? I'd appreciate any other suggestions, thanks!

Try system preferences, utilities and open disk utilites, click on HD your disc (what ever you named it, or if you did not ,the 2nd disc id down is your disc) click disc repairs, if the reponse is this disc has problems click disc repair. If this doesn't work re-post and some one will walk you thru this .

  • I upgraded to OS X10.9.4 and now my Cannon scanner will not work. I downloaded the new driver and still no luck.

I upgraded to OS X10.9.4 and now my Cannon MX 860 scanner will not work. The printer works. I downloaded the new driver and still no luck. Please help!

Open Print & Scan preferences. Select the printer in the sidebar list and click on the Delete [-] button. CTRL- or RIGHT-click in the sidebar area and select Reset Print System from the context menu. Re-Add the printer by clicking on the Add [+] button, select your printer from the little browser that opens, select the proper driver if it isn't set automatically, then click on the Add button. See if it now works.
Oh, be sure you install the new driver you downloaded.
BTW, you don't have a PowerMac as shown in your profile. PowerMacs were tower machines that ran PPC processors, not Intel processors. You really should correct that information in your profile.

  • Installed new driver and printing still stops with images

I have a Cannon printer and have it shared thru the USB port on my Airport. Any time I have to print a large image file the print gets almost complete and just stops. Light keep blinking and the printer driver says it's still printing. No error messages. If I plug the printer back into the USB port on the Macbook it prints the image file just fine.
I was hopeful that this new driver would fix the problem. Anyone know of a solution?
    Thanks,
    Larry

    Hi,
Different fonts will occupy different space to print.
So, the new font may occupy more space when compare to the old font and width of the window may not accomdate.
You can check by reducing the Font size of the new font, whether its actually printing with the new font.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Vamsi.

  • Disk utility reports "Device could not be opened" - error when trying to format a new drive in a Mac Pro 1,1

    MacPro 1,1 Quadcore 3 GHz (2006 "Woodcrest")
    32 GB RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 5770
    OS X 10.7.5 Lion
I have encountered the following behavior when trying to format a new drive with disk utility. This description has also been send via the Mac Pro feedback as a bug report to Apple.
On searching the web and forums with this particular error message and behaviour I could not find any usful results. So maybe the following description may be helpful for some users.
    Best regards.
    1. Drive Bay 1 contains the original 250 GB Startupdisk. It works without errors.
    2. Drive Bays 3 and 4 contain each a WD Caviar Black 2 TB SATA 3 HDD. They work without errors.
    3. I have purchased a third WD Caviar Black 2 TB HDD.
    4. In Drive Bay 2 there has been a Seagate 750 GB HDD, which worked in conjunction with all the other drives without error.
    5. I exchanged the Seagate HDD in Drive Bay 2 with the new WD Caviar Black 2 TB HDD.
    6. On starting the system, it will report to initialize the new drive.
    7. On trying to initialize the new drive with disk utility it reports the error [translated from German] "Erasing of the volume has failed. The device could not be opened."
    8. I thought that the drive is faulty. Thus I created an RMA-Case at WD. They exchanged the drive without problems.
    9. On getting the exchanged WD Caviar Black 2 TB drive I put it in Drive Bay 2 as before.
    10. On trying to erase and format the exchange drive I got the same error message "Drive could not be opened."
10.1 On selecting the physical drive in the devices list, disk utility reports all information in the bottom area of its window as usual, e. g. hard disk description, connection bus, type and place, capacity, write status, SMART-status, partition scheme.
10.1 On leaving that drive selected in the devices list and clicking the info-button, disk utility will also report additional information as usual, e. g. Name, Type, partition scheme, media-identification, media name, media type, device tree, … , number of relocated sectors, etc.. All this information appears to be valid, as can be compared to the other devices information inside the other Drive Bays. Also the disk numbering scheme appears to be standard - 4 HDDs give the numbering disk0, disk1, disk2, disk3.
10.2 From that information I conclude that the SATA-bus and connectors electrically work properly, the drive has spun up and can be accessed by the system normally.
    11. I powered down the computer, took out the HDDs from Drive Bays 3 and 4 and put the caddy with the new exchange drive in Drive Bay 4 [Maybe, I could have also just left it alone in Drive Bay 2, or 3].
    12. After powering on the system, disk utility will quick format the exchange drive without any error message. Also, when erasing again by selecting the option to write zeros to the drive, disk utility will finish without error.
    13. After disk utility finished formatting, I put back the original drives into Drive Bay 3 and 4 and put the now newly formatted drive back into Drive Bay 2.
    14. After switching on the computer the system start and login proceeds without any error message. All drives appear as expected on the desktop.

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

  • How do I add a new drive to a degraded MIRRORED  RAID set?

My mirrored raid said it was degraded because one of the drives had a failure.
Today I unplugged the faulty drive and inserted a new one.
    So far so good.
    I erased the new drive.
Then I went into disk utility and followed the instructions in the help about RAID but I cannot see how to add this new drive to the RAID.
    I'm confused.
    1) The data is all on the RAID (the good, original slice) so can I add a new slice?
    2) how do I do it?
    Many thanks

I don't recommend the Apple hardware RAID card, and it doesn't work with off the shelf drives. If you are using drives in RAID, first make sure they are RAID Edition or lacking that Enterprise. Same make/model/firmware.
If using Seagate, avoid anything prior to 7200.12 series. If WD the RE2/3 series.
Rebuilds are slow, and one reason why I recommend 3 drives, even if you lose one you are covered still.
Of course just having two backups per volume is more important and comes first; mirrors are great for live editing and recording (audio) but otherwise... I'd stick to stripe and redundant backups. Only if you need 24/7. Otherwise, forget mirror.

  • HT5096 I need to transfer a time machine backup to a new drive. It keeps failing.

I have a 2TB Time Capsule that I was using for Time Machine for both a MacBook and an iMac.  The iMac sparse bundle became corrupted earlier this spring and I was unable to delete it, so I need to reformat the TC. First, however, I need to move the TM sparse bundle for the MacBook to a new drive that I have set up just for TM for the MacBook.  After reformatting, I plan to only use the TC for the iMac.  I tried moving the sparse bundle tonight to the new drive, following directions listed in several places on this site and on Pondini's site.  However, it failed.  I am going to guess that it failed b/c I was not hooked up to the TC via ethernet. (I was on WIFI).  The new backup drive is a 2TB external that was plugged directly to the MacBook.  So, now I have connected them via ethernet.  I am again reparing the TC volume using Disk Utility, just to make sure all permissions, etc, are ok before moving.  Will I be able to move this file to the new drive easily, or should I plug the new drive directly to the Time Capsule and move it that way (while MacBook is connected via Ethernet).
Alternativey, is there a way to just archive that sparse bundle for the MacBook before I erase the drive?
FYI I am still running Snow Leopard on these machines, but trying to clean up the time machine backups today before installing Lion and moving to iCloud, so time is of the utmost importance here.
    Thanks so much!
    Kat

OK, this has now failed twice.  I repaired the drive using DU and there were no problems (even though it took 2 hours to go thru everything to verify).  Right now, the MacBook is connected via Ethernet to the TC.  The new TM drive (WD 3TB external, USB 3.0/2.0) is attached to the MacBook via USB.   I really need to keep this TM backup for the MacBook and also need to erase the TC.  How can I accmplish both?  I thought that there was a way to archive a TM sparse bundle?

  • Yoga 13: the Realtek RTL8723A new driver not yet working properly

After having faced lots of stability issues with my bluetooth mouse (Microsoft Sculpt Touch) I installed the new driver for the wifi/bluetooth chip RTL8723A (v1.04.0213 - 6th June 2013) and after having used it for several weeks, I have noted the following:
    Bluetooth issue:
    - Still several disconnection of my mouse (but slighty less than before)
    - There is a general trend that my mouse connection is worser everyday (used to work better) - and not a problem of batteries
    Wifi issue:
    - If I activate the "plane mode" from windows 8 wifi bar, it's impossible to reactivate the wifi! I have to run the windows'internal utility to sort out the problem (right clic on the wifi bar from the desktop and "resolve problems")
    - Sometime the wifi just doesn't connect properly (its connected on the router but there is no network) and I have to turn on the plane mode and do what I wrote above to make the wifi work again. But some time it doesn't work and I have to reboot
    - Despite the "wifi hotspot mode" is implemented (the "netsh wlan start hostednetwork" command) and work it's so instable that it always end in crashing the computer and followed by a reboot (perfectly managed by Windows 8 at least). Anyway I managed to cope with that during my holidays (I used it to create another wifi network which was a network share of another wifi network to which I could only log in for one device (my Yoga 13) - so I used my "hostednetwork" to connect iDevices at the same time). But after several crashes and reboot, the wifi was so instable that I had to reinstal the driver
I have never faced so much bugs in a so basic but vital component of a laptop which is the network card. This card is already far beyond what we could expect of a laptop of this range (the wifi n is single band, no 300 nor 450 mbits speed! It's worse than any modern smartphone!) and has not a good sensitivity but in top the driver seems to have been written by beginners.
So Lenovo, please, do something and pressurise your provider (Realtek) so as they release a driver working correctly - or just don't use their cards and invest in better providers (like Intel which is doing great network cards with professional class software).

Sorry to hear about all your wifi issues.  Unfortunately a lot of Yoga 13 owners are having problems, especially due to Realtek compatibility with specific router hardware.  Just to see if things improve you might try some of the other driver versions discussed here:
The "Beta" wifi driver from diecast17 is a little older than the official June 6th driver but first improved wireless for many users: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ideapad-essential/640537-ideapad-yoga-109.html#post9180970
There is a slightly newer Bluetooth driver for another Lenovo product that also works for the Yoga 13 (per this forum thread, installs version 05/22/2013-1.3.744.3 vs. 09/06/2012-1.3.644.3): http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS034706

  • I need a new drive for my G4 Mac mini - where to start??

    Hello all,
I have a approximately 4-5 year old 1.5GHz Power PC G4 Mac mini with 1 GB DDR SDRAM memory and an 80 GB hard drive. I was having issues with it running slow, not being able to access different files/applications, etc. so I ran Disk Warrior on it and received the warning that it was not able to replace the directory and that I should save all files from the Preview directory (which I have been able to do).
I took the mini to my local Genius Bar and was told that the most likely problem was a failing drive. Unfortunate as that is, I am happy I was able to make back-ups of all important files on it, and have resigned myself to making the necessary repairs to get it running again.
As I have yet to ever run across this type of problem (replacing a drive to a computer) I obviosuly have a few questions to that end. As some of them may be buried in threads that might be hard to find, I was wondering if folks out there would have the answers to a few simple questions I had regarding this upcoming task.
First, would this be a failing optical drive or hard drive from the way I've described the problem? I seem to be able to get the mini "running", that is able to copy files, etc. if I first run Disk Warrior on it and ten restart - but it is still unable to open things such as Safari or iTunes.
Second, what are the best options for replacement in terms of price/speed/memory? I would love to have the newer intel processor in it, but don't even know if this is something that would be replaced with a new drive (shows how much I know! :^) I don't need as much hard drive space since external drives are fairly cheap - my main focus would be a faster processor and RAM.
Is this something a pretty capable person should attempt to replace themselves, or is going to Best Buy or something along those lines a better choice for the security of not messing the mini itself up? I feel fairly comfortable doing it if it is possible, I would just hate to fry the entire computer if it is a really tricky process.
Thanks in advance for whomever replies to this rather "wordy" question. I think forums like this are one of the best ways to learn and get answers on electronic questions!
    Cheers,
    Kev

would this be a failing optical drive or hard drive from the way I've described the problem?
Hard drive. DW and other such utilities don't even work on optical drives, and an optical drive problem would not cause boot problems and the other symptoms that you describe. But before you replace the drive, I'd suggest you try reformatting the drive ("erasing" in the terminology used in Disk Utility) and reinstalling Mac OS X. That may fix the problem. If not, then you can look into replacing the drive.
Second, what are the best options for replacement in terms of price/speed/memory?
You can find options here, among other places:
I would love to have the newer intel processor in it, but don't even know if this is something that would be replaced with a new drive (shows how much I know! :^) I don't need as much hard drive space since external drives are fairly cheap - my main focus would be a faster processor and RAM.
Sorry, but replacing the processor can't be done. If you want a faster processor, you'll have to purchase a newer mini.
Is this something a pretty capable person should attempt to replace themselves, or is going to Best Buy or something along those lines a better choice for the security of not messing the mini itself up?
Avoid Best Buy like the plague. They're far more likely to cause problems for your mini than you would be doing it yourself. There are a number of sites on the web that have instructions. Here's one:
    http://www.sterpin.net/uk/ddMacMiniuk.htm
OWC/MacSales has video instructions as well:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/mac-mini/
It is a bit tricky - lots of disassembly - but it's not beyond a reasonably dexterous user.
    Regards.

  • I tried to copy my itunes library to new drive now I'm in trouble

I bought a new 1tb internal drive and installed it. I wanted a dedicated spot for a 500 gig music library and a place for dedicated backup. The man at micro center told me in order to move the library from the 1tb lacie external drive to the new drive that i should just open both drives in finder then drag the itunes folder from the lacie to the new drive. Once they were copied to the new internal drive i thought everything was fine.. the songs played..... until I turned off the lacie, then suddenly I got the question marks by the songs when i tried to play them. Here's just one of the places I screwed up! I next decided to drag the itunes music folder from the lacie into the open itunes window. What I got was a doubling of all the songs. Then I decided I would just start over again and erase the new drive and import the library again, but this time from the lacie with carbon copy cloner. When I opened I tunes after this was done and reset the music folder pathway to the new drive I still had all the songs doubled. Here's where it gets worse, I decided to return the pathway to the music folder back to the lacie, where I also chose to consolidate the library. SO, what I have is an itunes that says i have two of everything. I checked the actual itunes folder on the the lacie and it looks like in reality i do have only one of each song. So in fact it is sort of an illusion that i have a doubled library. What do i do now, how can i get rid of all the dups and straighten this whole mess out before it gets worse??

this didn't work..... the "add to library" just put more songs in an already overcrowded itunes window. You know what is weird is that I use the get info on the music folder on the external drive and it doesn't say that there are more gigs of music than before ..but in the itunes window at the bottom where you see the size of your library it says the size is double what the "get info" on the drive says.
I've wiped the new internal drive clean a few times since last night and re-tried different suggestions that folks here on discussions have given me and I still wind up with dups. This morning i tried this> wipe clean > reformat drive >open itunes with the option key down > chose "new library"> chose " new internal drive for location of library> went into preferences to advanced and chose my new drive and the new itunes as the pathway> opened my lacie drive and dragged the itunes music folder to the open itunes window on the left hand side at the top and started it immediately started to import songs. Then i checked some of the albums that were imported and yet again the duplicates were there ...only this time when i tried to play them i got play from each dup whereas before one would play and the other would give me the "not found " message [you know the sort of exclamation point thingy]. So this does mean that it is indexing or pointing to both drives, at least while the import is taking place i guess. SO HOW DO I GET RID OF THESE DUPS WITHOUT GOING THROUGH EACH ALBUM ON EACH DRIVE ?

  • Consolidated Library to new drive can't see with iTunes

I added a new HD and moved the music per the instructions. Worked fine, then I moved "My Documents" folder w/XP to the new drive and it moved the iTunes folder (which your not supposed to do). Now it can't see the songs in the library even though the songs are in location specified under preferences. XP had copied over iTunes folder to new drive, I tried to re-create correct path on original drive and move folder back, but it still doesn't work. I have the "iTunes Music Library" and "iTunes Library" (data) files. How can I get iTunes to see the library again?

First you have to let the new itunes installation know where the songs are, on your new PC.
Second, you have to play at least a few seconds of a purchased track so the new PC will get authorized.
How did you move your music over to the new PC? Did you move the itunes library database file over, also?

  • Problems Moving to New Drive For Time Machine Backups

I'm moving to a new, bigger drive for my TM backups. So with the help of some suggestions here, I:
    1. Turned off Time Machine
    2. Formatted the new drive with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"
    3. Cloned the old drive to the new with SuperDuper (Erase and copy)
    4. Turned on TM and told it to use the new drive (with a different name than the old one) as the backup drive.
That was twenty minutes ago. TM backups usually take a couple of minutes. The only time it went this long is when it was doing its first backup. Is that what's happening? I've still got the folder structure you'd expect -- with a new folder for the backup going on now.
In addition, the clone took forever -- five hours for 120 GB over Firewire 800. It seemed to slow down as it went on, too.
Does anybody have any suggestions? Should I stop the current backup and try something different?
Thanks very much to anybody who can help,
    Steve

Cool. A "deep traversal." Sounds like something you do when you make the jump to lightspeed.
Anyway, I did let it finish and everything seems to be normal now. The next backup took just two minutes. Much better.
Thanks very much for your help.
I trust that you have no issues with the procedure I used?
not sure which procedure you mean but you should be fine now.
