2 New iMac 1.83's  - 4th button on mouse acting bizzare on both computers!

I just brought home and set up 2 brand new 17" iMacs, 1.83 intel based. I have had to turn off the 4th button on both of these computers because the 4th button (side "pinch" buttons on the mouse) randomly act as if someone is pressing them - even when I just move the cursor across the screen or sometimes when the mouse is setting still. Both computers do this although one is worse than the other.
Any others experiencing this?
Is it the mouse? A system problem?
Any help would be appreciated

It's almost certainly not a problem with the Macs. I've had the same problem with both of my wired Mighty Mouses on both my PowerBook and my Intel iMac. It's the mouse, not the computer. Interestingly, my wireless Mighty Mouse seems to have much better side buttons which don't trigger randomly.

  • Brand new iMac cannot pair bluetooth keyboard and magic mouse

    Hi there!
Just received brand new iMac 21" yesterday. Unboxed it, turned it on and none of both bluetooth devices (keyboard and magic mouse) managed to get paired.
I was able to connect a USB mouse to log into the Mac. Did all turn off/on Bluetooth, turn off/on iMac several times with no luck. Weird thing is that when I lift keyboard on a 30 degree angle above my desk it seems to actually pair with the iMac but then when back to original position it disconnects.
I've tried the magic mouse with my 2008 Macbook and works flawlessly. After several attempts never managed to pair magic mouse with iMac and as said earlier keyboard is not working on a standard position on my desk. It is frustrating to have paid close to 2,000$ for something that does not even work out of the box... Any ideas or suggestions?
I'm planning to take it today to nearest Apple Stores but have a bad feeling about "genius" folks being able to help me out. Would be worth changing iMac for new one?
    Thanks a lot in advanced!

Thanks Barry! If SCM reset means the following:
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
I've done that several times yesterday with no success. "SMC Reset" sounds quite fancy but then you google it and find that is a "simple" shut down and restart protocol... I tried "shutting down" by both selecting option via OS and also physically on the button behind screen.
I appreciate the help but unless I've done that "simple" protocol wrong it is not working.
Sorry for the frustration from my side. It just seems too much of a vague story when you hear Apple friends talking things about "the best OS", "best desktop",...and then you pay about $2,000 and find this yourself.
If anyone else interested I commit to keep this up to date with the feedback I'll get from "genius" folks today. Hopefully they'll prove themselves to live up to their position naming.

  • Kensington trackball v1.1.2 - 4th button - Expert Mouse

has anyone found a way to get the 4th button working with Trackball Works?
Seems I can always get both Right buttons, but only one of the Left buttons unless I use both as Click.  Kind of a waste.

  • New iMac display on/off

Does the new iMac have an on/off button for the display that is separate from the on/off power button for the iMac itself?
It would be nice to have the ability to turn off the display, when not in use, without having to powering down the iMac.

Sleeping the entire machine is one thing. Sleeping the display is a separate issue.
It seems there's currently no way to PERMANENTLY turn off the display backlight on an iMac. Setting a display time-out in the energy-saver settings or Ctrl-Shift-eject is supposed turn off the backlight, but if you have applications running on the machine, the display will turn itself back on again after a few seconds. (Try sleeping in a room with an iMac display on. Even displaying a black jpeg with the brightness turned down, you'll need to physically cover the screen!) The backlight will normally power down properly when there's nothing running on the machine, but if the machine weren't doing anything, I'd just sleep the whole machine, not just the display!! I want to sleep just the display/backlight when there are time-consuming applications running in the background, i.e., if the machine is encoding, running backups, syncing with cloud/server drives, etc.
This thread shows many other people having the same problem:
    http://mac.elated.com/2007/02/02/why-cant-you-turn-off-the-screen/
It seems this has been a problem for well over a year and I've not even seen Apple acknowledge the issue. IMHO, not being able to leave applications running with the backlight turned off is a critical design flaw. If I'd known this in advance, I'd have bought a Windows PC Now regretting my iMac purchase...

  • How do I remove an old iPod device from my list of 5 so I can add my new iMac to my iTunes account?

I see that iTunes will only sync 5 devices to my iTunes account. One of my 5 is an old iPod that has not worked for years. How do I delete it so I can add my new iMac to my iTunes account?

iTunes Authorizations are limited to 5 Computers and 10 devices total. If you've already reached the 5 computer threshold, removing the iPod won't do any good. Nevertheless, here's some more info:

  • Can't get old scanner to work with new iMAC

I have an old scanner, Epson Perfection 4870 Photo that I can't get my new iMAC to install in PSE6 like I've had in my older computers. I've installed all the software (plus I used my old laptop to transfer files/information when I initially started the new iMAC. When I go into PSE6 it is not under the import area that it used to be. Do I need to go manually drag the file in the hard drive to another folder? Thank you.

Most likely the problem is with the driver. I have the same scanner at work and this is what I had to do to get it to work. Because you are running PSE6 which is a Universal Application on an Intel Mac, in order for the plugin to load within PSE it must also be a Universal plugin which it's not. Epson claims these drivers that were released in 2006 are Intel and 10.5 compatible. What you have to do to get it to work is Open up Epson Scan Utility in order to scan because the Scan Utility will run as a PPC Application. You can call Epson to confirm but if they try and tell you how to run PSE in Rosetta that is not a good solution.

  • "new" iMac won't connect to old iMac or to new MacBook Pro

For a while I've not been able to connect from my new i7 iMac to my old G4 iMac, although I can connect in the other direction ok. I've just gotten a new MacBook Pro, but so far I've been unable to use the Migration Assistant (MA) to transfer files etc. from the i7 iMac, which involves, as I understand it, the iMac connecting to the MBP on request from MA. This connection just doesn't ever happen.
Like the G4 iMac, however, the MBP can connect to the i7 iMac.
So, the question is what's wrong with my i7 iMac... presumably something amiss in its network settings?
    Help will be greatly appreciated

Have you looked in the Sys Prefs/Sharing pane to see that all the Macs are configured the same in regard to Sharing?
Is the new iMac's Firewall possibly interfering?
MA must be opened on both Macs to work, then follow the onscreen instructions that MA will give you on the Mac to which you wish to migrate.
What kind of network are you using; ethernet, wi-fi or a combo of both? Just for the migration a simple ethernet or FireWire cable between the two Macs will also do the trick and not need to worry about network configuration.

  • I did a bad migration to a new iMac Lion copying files

Got a new iMac and tried a migration from a mac book pro and they computers couldn't find each other. Tired to make the new mac a target disk with a firewire cable and started to move all the files. Now I keep getting two error messages saying that HWNetMgr and HWPortDetect wont start up because the dont have the right security rights
    They are located in /library/Startupitems
I reinstalled the system which is inside the computer.
I called Applecare (they told me to reinstall again or bring it to a shop.
DOES ANYONE HAVE A CLUE HOW TO GET RID OF THIS OR FIX IT. BRAND NEW COMPUTER.
DOESN'T WORK. AND I AM NEW TO MAC WHICH MAKES IT ALL WORSE. GORGEOUS MACHINE THAT I FEEL I RUINED.

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

I'm transferring my iTunes library from a PC to my new iMac via home sharing.  I've followed all of the steps to "import" my library but the "import" button is greyed out.  Any suggestions?

There is no need to import anything or use Home Sharing.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer, everything will be exactly as it was.

  • TS1367 I have a new iMac and can't get it to turn? Can't find a power button?

Have new iMac and it won't start up. Can't find a power button?

Try to perform a HARD RESET on the printer first. Unplug the power cord from the printer, and leave it out for 30 seconds. Plug it back in, see if it aligns and finishes the job.
After alignment, try to print a test page from the printer or make a copy. This job is to make sure that the HARDWARE of the printer is working correctly.

  • I'm trying to set up a dual monitor for my new iMac. I'm using a second display I used with my old G5. My iMac recognizes the second monitor but the monitor won't turn on. Power button doesn't do anything on the monitor itself.

I'm trying to set up a dual monitor for my new iMac. I'm using a second display I used with my old G5. My iMac recognizes the second monitor but the monitor won't turn on. Power button doesn't do anything on the monitor itself.

If it won't turn on then the monitor is dead (power supply?, video circuits?).  Not worth repairing.
If you have a new iMac then it has thunderbolt.  So exactly what is that monitor you are trying to connect?  For TB you can connect a mini-displayport monitor.   Probably (not 100% sure with TB) can use dvi or vga too if you have the appropriate adapter.

  • 2nd and 4th Generation iPod shuffles show as corrupt on new iMac

My 2nd and 4th gen shuffles are showing as corrupt when syncing with my new iMac, but work just fine when syncing with the prior iMac we just replaced. I took the Shuffles to the Apple store and they confirmed no issues with the devices. I have read and searched without a formal fix...restoring the iPods does not help and deleting the p.list files did not correct the issue...any other with a similar issue?
Thank you for any help that could be provided....

This is very mysterious...  You can try starting up in Safe Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
Some things do not work in Safe Mode, but I think you can still run iTunes and do a Restore on an iPod.  This is like the new user account test, except you are checking to see if some non-Apple system extension is causing a problem.  Only the minimal Apple extensions run when starting up in Safe Mode.
I'm sure you have the latest version of iTunes, if you are running the latest Mavericks release.
You are probably running the system and software installation that came pre-installed (plus updates).  The only other thing I can think of to try is to reinstall everything, and try it on a "clean" system.  If you have an external USB drive that is not being used, you can do the installation on that drive, and start up from it.  That will avoid messing with your internal drive, to try something that may not make a difference.
You can do this using the Recovery disk.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13871
When you get to Step 4, if that external drive is connected, you should be able to select it as your target for the installation, instead of "Macintosh HD" on your internal drive.  NOTE:  The external drive needs to be formatted for Mac.  If it has a PC format, you'll need to use Disk Utility to erase it, like you did for the shuffle earlier, except use Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the Format.
After the installation completes (and the iMac restarts from the new system) select Software Update from the Apple menu (a few times) to install all Apple updates.  Then, run iTunes and see if the problem still occurs.
You can change your startup disk (back to your normal startup disk) in System Preferences Startup Disk pane.
