(2) next to computer name in System Profiler

My Macbook Pro's computer name is somehow being counted twice when I look in System Profiler. It shows (2) next to the name of my computer.
What does this mean?

It's OK, it means that now or in the Past you were connected to another Computer of the same name. Most likely when Migrating Data or such.

  • Number next to computer name?

    Hi all,
I'm very curious to know why there is a number next to the name of my Macbook Pro. For example if you go to Finder and see under Devices it says "User's Macbook Pro (4)" The number in brackets seem to change every now and then and goes up in number. Pretty soon it will say "User's Macbook Pro (5)".
Does anyone have an idea of what this means?
    Thanks in advance!

A few ideas for those with this issue:
If you have not yet tried a new/different admin account, I would create/login to a different one and see if the issue exists there. If not, this would suggest a particular setting in your normal account and/or a corrupt preference file.
First, I would make a clone/backup (SuperDuper, CarbonCopyCloner, TimeMachine) so you can return to your current state, if, after messing with settings, things get messed up beyond your being able to restore them. (That's what's nice about full clones/backups, you can play pretty much to your heart's content, and if things don't work out, "press the go-back-in-time-button" in almost all cases except for firmware changes.)
    Open System Preferences:
Network: Advanced: uncheck "Remember networks this computer has joined." Click ok. Restart. (And/or play with other settings you're comfortable restoring afterwards.)
Accounts: Login Options: Network Account Server: Join (I know nothing about this setting, just seems like it could be related and may be something you want to look into further). Restart.
    Sharing settings. Restart.
Print & Fax: Uncheck "Share this printer on the network." Restart.
Before you make your next clone/backup, make sure everything functions as you need it to, as you don't want to copy any mistakes over the original functioning clone/backup, even if it is adding those numbers after the computer name.

  • System Profiler | Startup Disk BSD Assigned Name

This is a recurring issue, although I'm not sure whether or not it matters.
My question(s): When run from within the OS (Leopard 10.5.8) on my HD - Why do both System Profiler and Disk Utility recognize my startup/boot BSD name to be = disk2s2?
I'm curious because, when run from my Leopard Install DVD, both System Profiler & Disk Utility recognize and display what I believe is (or should be) the correct startup/boot BSD name (disk0s2).
    Does it make any difference?
Regardless, I still would appreciate someone who can explain why my startup/boot BSD name in the past always has been the same "disk0s2". Whereas now it's "disk2s2".
Again, in the past I've noticed this (difference) on more than one occasion after formatting/installing my OS on a brand new hard drive. Current info listed below:

  • How to change your 'computer name' ?

I have just 'migrated' ( using the software install - by a firewire cable ) from my old PowerBook G4 to a MacBook Pro - Everything is fine except now my MacBook Pro is called PowerBook G4 15" on the start-up screen and system profiler title.
My question is how do you change this 'computer name' ?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Ti-Powerbook/MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

You can change your computer name in System Preferences (found under the Apple menu) in the Sharing pane. At the top of the pane it will say Computer Name: PowerBook G4 15".
Note that the name can contain spaces. Mine, for example, is Ministry of Magic.
Delete the current name and enter the new name. Note that you do not have to click the edit button out to the right. That is only useful if you want to change the bonjour address on your local subnet to be something different from NewComputerName.local (where NewComputerName is the new name you just changed it to.
    Hope this helps. Good luck.

  • Change Computer Name after first TC backup

Has anyone tried changing their Computer Name after the first TC backup. The sparse image created on the TC which contains the backup has the computer name as the first part of its name, presumably any change of computer name would have to automatically change the name of that sparse image. I would like to change the name of my iMac from the default but don't want to do this if I have to do a brand new full Time Machine backup afterwards.

I have changed the computer name (in System Pref: Sharing) of an iMac on our network after the initial backup to TC. There was no problem. This is due to the fact that TC uses the MAC address (also called Ethernet ID) to differentiate machines connected to it.
You can see your machine's MAC address in the advanced area of the Network SysPref under the Ethernet Tab. This number is also in the .sparsebunle idisc image created by TC.
Good luck with the name change.

  • 10.5.3 problem with changing computer name

Having an issue with computer naming after 10.5.3. Here is the issue:
    New Leopard install, fresh
Installed all updates, including the 10.5.3 update
Change the computer name in System Preferences\Sharing
The new name is reflected in Computer Name field
The new name is also reflected as the Local Hostname under Edit
    Rebooted the machine
Look at System Preferences\Sharing\Service and none of the services reflect the new computer name\local hostname, the old computer name is listed for each service
Click on the Edit button and deleted the Local Hostname, left it blank and clicked OK
Now the new Local Hostname is listed for each service
Open a Terminal window and the old computer name is listed at the prompt
    Reboot the machine
Open a Terminal window and the old computer name is listed at the prompt
Not being a Unix guru, I assume there may be a way to modify the computer name some other way than through the GUI. I sure hope so cause the new patch that was supposed to fix an issue with computer names appears to have created a new bug.

I'm posted an image of Aperture corruption, fresh this morning:
    http://lemon.soju.co.uk/2008/06/05/would-you-trust-your-photos-to-an-application -that-does-this/
    - New iMac 3.06GHz Dual Core, 4GB Memory, NVidia 512MB (received Sunday 1st June 2008)
    - 10.5.2 upgraded to 10.5.3, then Aperture 2.1 trial installed
    - First import of 40GB of photos, left to run overnight
    - When trying to use this morning, Aperture screens were corrupt and it refused to shut down. I had to power off then boot back into Mac OS X. When I restarted Aperture it worked, but it still seemed to have problems taking over the machine - eg, I wasn't able to send mail from Gmail within VMWare Fusion until I closed down Aperture. I never have problems with VMWare Fusion.

  • Computer short name counted twice in System Profiler

My Macbook Pro's Short Name is somehow being counted twice when I look in System Profiler. It shows (2) next to the name of my computer.
Any idea how to fix this?

    So, to rephrase my question:
Why is my user account being counted twice in System Profiler, like this: myusername (2)?
I I just went into my system profiler. I did:
Blue Apple > about this Mac > more info
this brought up the system profiler. I do not see a short user name here. I do see the computer name.
Could we have more info on where you see the short user name and what is our around it?
    Robert

  • Why is there a number in ( ) next to my Computer name?

I just noticed that my Computer name at the top of the Devices list in Finder has a (2) next to it, in other words -----'s Computer (2)
Anyone have an idea why this has happened?

    Hi,
My First Admin account on my G4 was base on my Name (As I entered it in the Set Up Assistant)
I did the same on my MacBook Pro and ended up with two computer's called Ralph Johnss Computer (Written with the double s that to the software)
I used The Address Book (My Card) to change the User's Info there as iChat uses that for the Bonjour List.
I used System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > WINS to change the NetBOIS Name.
I have also used the System Preferences > Sharing to change the .local name.
Some of these need more care than others in changing, such as the .local name, as other issues can arise.

  • In System Preferences- Sharing- Remote Management the address doesn't reflect the computer name.

    Hi,
I have a dual boot system with two seperate hard drives, Lion and Snow Leopard.  One drive has a name of mac-pro2 for Lion and mac-pro2sl for Snow Leopard.  Something happened when I rebooted from Snow Leopard to Lion that in System Preferences->Sharing->Remote Management that the computer name had changed to the Snow Leopard  computer name it has a address and name of mac-pro2sl.  I have change the Computer Name: and it worked and was changed to mac-pro2 but Remote Management still has the address of mac-pro2sl and doesn't reflect the computer name.  I can ssh into Lion with mac-pro2sl but I have a conflict with from other computers when I log in with a warning of "Remote Host Identification has Changed".  How do you change the computer name for remote management and ssh?
I have changed the hostname and it reflects the change when you login, mac-pro2 for Lion.  But when you ssh into Lion it requires mac-pro2sl not mac-pro2.
When I change the computer name it shows below that the name in "Remote Management: On" "computer using the address mac-pro2sl" is selected but then doesn't change but remains the same when the dialog closes.  How do you change the address to reflect the computer name? Is there a command line utility?
    Thanks for any help.

If this problem is due to DNS, look in your configuration. What is the number one DNS server address? Is it local, or is it on the Internet at large? Or post the Address here and folks can help you look it up.
    192.168.yyy.zzz
    10.xxx.yyy.zzz
    172.xxx.yyy.zzz
    are all strictly local.

  • Computer Recognizes iSight in System Profiler, but will not work

So I have a black MacBook and everything works fine except for the built-in iSight. I have tried reseting my computer and even did a factory restore, but to no avail. When I checked the system profiler, it recognizes my iSight. Here is what it says under the USB Device Tree:
    Built-in iSight:
    Product ID: 0x8501
    Vendor ID: 0x05ac (Apple Inc.)
    Version: 1.89
    Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: Micron
    Location ID: 0xfd400000
    Current Available (mA): 500
    Current Required (mA): 100
When I open iChat or PhotoBooth, the green camera comes on but it displays only black. Obviously the computer knows that I have an iSight camera, but it just will not work. Is there something I can do, or is my camera just broken? Please help me out.

    (0) Have you tried all relevant suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 ? Did you test iChat and Photo Booth in a new test user account? If you need help creating a test account, see this article:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
    (1) You post that you "tried reseting my computer". If that means you doubt whether you properly reset your PMU (SMC) per this Apple article:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
print out the instructions appropriate to you model, study them carefully, and perform the reset again.
    (2) Did you disconnect all AV devices (examples: eYeTV, iPods, scanners, etc.) before your tests? If you installed non-Apple software with any of those AV items, have you uninstalled the software IAW the supplier's instructions?
    (3) When you did your "factory restore", did you zero (securely erase) your disk before installing the factory software? One zero write is sufficient to be certain there is nothing left on your startup disk that may be causing your problem. If you need help with the procedure, see:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/11.5/en/7090.html
Zeroing the disk will take a long time (hours, depending on the size of your drive), so plan some time.
    (4) After zeroing the disk and a "factory restore", did you test iChat and Photo Booth before you added any non-Apple software items? This test will assure that you have not added some third-party item that is causing your problem.

  • System Image Utility- update computer name file?

Is there any way to update the computer renaming list after an image is created? For instance, you have an existing image you want to install on new computers. Do you need to recreate the image just to pull in the updated list of computer names/mac addresses?
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Did some looking around and can maybe answer my own question. It appears that the naming list that you point System Image Utility to is converted to a .plist called sharingNames.plist located inside your newly created .nbi at install.dmg/etc/. You can edit it with the PropertyList editor to update names or it seems to work too if you replace the sharingNames.plist with once from a newer image with an updated name list.
On the other question about the 10.4.9 image not completing, I tested that again with the log on and saw the failure was due to not enough disk space even though there's plenty. Setting filtering to specific machines made no difference so I must have dreamed that up. In my case, I'm target booting a ibook g4 to an intel machine and it fails. I can target boot the same ibook to a ppc machine and image creation is successful so I guess you can't mix the intel and ppc. It did work target booted to an intel machine if I used Disk Utility to create an image off the target booted ibook, then pointed SIU to that image as the source instead of the target booted ibook.

  • Yosemite profile manager shortening computer names and serials

If I prepare a placeholder in Yosemite profile manager, it shortens computer names and serials.
I've added and removed the placeholder and the names and serials are getting smaller, to a point they are only one letter long now.
Somehow, it suspect may be linked to the form fill feature but even if I try to type all, the placeholder names and serials shorten every time.
    Ever seen or solved that?
    François.

I cleared Safari Form Filling in Safari > Preferences > Auto Fill > Other Forms, selected example.com, clear button and closed preferences.
I went back to profile Manager, create the place holder again and all is good now.
