  • Help needed in deleting nodes from RAC database

    Our DB is 10g RAC database and the servers are Window 2003 server. Initially the database was configured to have 4 nodes. For some reason we stopped the instances in the first two nodes and the current database is running on node3 and node4. I queried the v$thread view and it shows 3 records. Thread 2 is closed and disabled. Thread 3 is open and public and thread 4 is open and private. Now we need to disconnect nodes 1 and 2 from RAC db and cluster ware (We use Oracle cluster ware) and plan to use those two servers for other purposes. Although I read through the Oracle doc regarding deleting node from RAC “11 Adding and Deleting Nodes and Instances on Windows-Based Systems” and wrote down the steps we need to take but I am still not comfortable in doing it since it is production env and we don’t have any dev env to practice those steps. So I would like to borrow your experiences and your lessons learned while you were doing those. Please share your thoughts and insights with us.
    Thank you so much for your help,
    Shirley

    what's your full version? I can warn about specific issues in 10.1.0.3 and 10.2.0.1 - for example, in some cases (depending on how the listener was configured), it will be impossible to delete the listener for the deleted node. Known bug.
    To avoid many many known bugs, you may want to upgrade to at least 10.2.0.2 before removing a node (from my experience, this is the first stable RAC version).
    In any case, deleting a node is a rather delicate process. I really really recommend practicing. Take any pc/laptop, install VMWARE, define two virtual machines, install RAC and remove one node. It will take you an extra day or two, and could save your production.

    Hi All,
    I get the following error eventhough I have followed the instruction for Solaris R2. The instruction is enclosed. Please Advise! Thanks.
    /app/cluvfy/runcluvfy.sh stage -post hwos -n nod1 -verbose
    Result: User equivalence check failed for user "oracle".
    ERROR:
    User equivalence unavailable on all the nodes.
    Verification cannot proceed.
    Post-check for hardware and operating system setup was unsuccessful on all the nodes.
    =========================
    1. Log in as the oracle user.
    2. If necessary, create the .sshdirectory in the oracle user’s home directory and
    set the correct permissions on it:
    $ mkdir ~/.ssh
    $ chmod 700 ~/.ssh
    3. Enter the following commands to generate an RSA key for version 2 of the SSH
    protocol:
    $ /usr/bin/ssh-keygen -t rsa
    At the prompts:
    ¦ Accept the default location for the key file.
    ¦ Enter and confirm a pass phrase that is different from the oracle user’s
    password.
    This command writes the public key to the ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub file and the
    private key to the ~/.ssh/id_rsafile. Never distribute the private key to anyone.
    4. Enter the following commands to generate a DSA key for version 2 of the SSH
    protocol:
    $ /usr/bin/ssh-keygen -t dsa
    At the prompts:
    ¦ Accept the default location for the key file
    Pre-Installation Tasks 2-11
    Creating Required Operating System Groups and User
    ¦ Enter and confirm a pass phrase that is different from the oracle user’s
    password
    This command writes the public key to the ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub file and the
    private key to the ~/.ssh/id_dsa file. Never distribute the private key to
    anyone.
    Add keys to an authorized key file: Complete the following steps:
    1. On the local node, determine if you have an authorized key file
    (~/.ssh/authorized_keys). If the authorized key file already exists, then
    proceed to step 2. Otherwise, enter the following commands:
    $ touch ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
    $ cd ~/.ssh
    $ ls
    You should see the id_dsa.pub and id_rsa.pubkeys that you have created.
    2. Using SSH, copy the contents of the ~/.ssh/id_rsa.puband
    ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pubfiles to the file ~/.ssh/authorized_keys, and provide
    the Oracle user password as prompted. This process is illustrated in the following
    syntax example with a two-node cluster, with nodes node1 and node2, where the
    Oracle user path is /home/oracle:
    [oracle@node1 .ssh]$ ssh node1 cat /home/oracle/.ssh/id_rsa.pub >>
    authorized_keys
    oracle@node1’s password:
    [oracle@node1 .ssh]$ ssh node1 cat /home/oracle/.ssh/id_dsa.pub >>
    authorized_keys
    oracle@node1 .ssh$ ssh node2 cat /home/oracle/.ssh/id_rsa.pub >>
    authorized_keys
    oracle@node2’s password:
    [oracle@node1 .ssh$ ssh node2 cat /home/oracle/.ssh/id_dsa.pub
    authorized_keysoracle@node2’s password:
    Note: Repeat this process for each node in the cluster • RAC upgradation 9i to 11g R2

    Hi,
    I have been given the requirement to migrate a 9i RAC 3 node database( 9i cluster) to 11g R2 RAC database iam looking for a document or steps to do this activity. any help on this is highly appreciated.
    should I upgrade the cluster first and then upgrade each node one by one or I should upgrade the cluster and upgrade all the home in one go ?
    Thanks,
    Satish Abraham.J

    Hi,
    Since you are using RAC database , you need to upgrade Clusterware (11.2.0.3) first , then RAC database upgrade(11.2.0.3).
    For RAC Upgrade to 11.2.0.3 we have following options/upgrade_methods available:-
    +1.Manual Upgrade (using catupgrd.sql script)+
    You have to do this in two steps:-
    9.2.0.3 ---->9.2.0.8 ----> 11.2.0.3
    +2. Using DBUA (Database Upgrade Assistant)+
    +3. Export / Import+
    If you have MOS access, then you can refer following Note:-

  • Distance limit between nodes on RAC

    Hi all,
    Can anyone give idea that what's the maximum distance allowed between nodes in RAC.We're planning to install 10g RAC on Solaris and we've two sites.Distance between these sites is 12 KM's.
    Any feedback will be appreciated.
    Regards.

    See the following two papers on OTN
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/clustering/index.html
    Using standard NFS to support a third voting disk on an Extended Distance cluster configuration on Linux,AIX, or Solaris (PDF) January 2007
    Oracle Real Application Clusters on Extended Distance Clusters(PDF) November 2006
    12km is fine as far as distance goes, but there are other requirements.

  • 10g RAC upgrade to 11g RAC

    How to perform 10g RAC upgrade to 11g with Dataguard in place?
    OS=LINUX
    RDBMS=10.2.0.4
    DG=PHYSICAL STANDBY
    Below is my understanding
    1)Install 11g CRS in NEW_CRS_HOME
    2)Install 11g in NEW_ASM_HOME
    3)Install 11g in NEW_RDBMS_HOME
    4)Export the new NEW_ORACLE_HOME and start up the database with startup upgrade.
    5) Run the catupgrade.sql script.
    Are there any other steps involve?
    In case I have to rollback then how to rollback CRS.

    Personally I would use DBUA instead of catupgrade.sql, but make sure you follow the upgrade documentation for pre-checks etc. You will also need to use netca to recreate the sqlnet listeners in the 11g homes and register with 11g CRS.
    CRS is generally fairly quick to re-install and re-register databases, and this is cleaner than trying to restore OCR and VOTE disks etc. If you prefer to rollback be sure you backup the OCR and VOTE disks (e.g use dd), backup /etc/oracle, CRS_HOME, /etc/init* scripts etc.
    The dataguard standby database should roll forward through the upgrade, but you will need to manually register the standby with 11gCRS. Make sure you have your DB and Log create_file_dest's set, as well as standby_file_management=auto. Personally I would manually recover the standby after the upgrade in case I need to use it to fallback.

    Vasu

    Vasu,
    The issue is, in our tnsnames.ora in both the nodes.What is the issue?
    I believe the following documents should be helpful in configuring your tnsnames.ora (and other files) with RAC implemented.

  • ASM instances on 2 node Oracle RAC 10g r2  on Red Hat 4 u1

    Hi all
    I'm experiencing a problem in configuring diskgroups under +ASM instances on a two node Oracle RAC.
    I followed the official guide and also official documents from metalink site, but i'm stuck with the visibility of asm disks.
    I created fake disks on nfs with Netapp certified storage binding them to block device with the usual trick "losetup /dev/loopX /nfs/disk1 " ,
    run "oracleasm createdisk DISKX /dev/loopX" on one node and
    "oracleasm scandisks" on the other one.
    With "oracleasm listdisks" i can see the disks at OS level in both nodes , but , when i try to create and mount diskgroup in the ASM instances , on the instance on which i create the diskgroup all is well, but the other one doesn't see the disks at all, and diskgroup mount fails with :
    ERROR: no PST quorum in group 1: required 2, found 0
    Tue Sep 20 16:22:32 2005
    NOTE: cache dismounting group 1/0x6F88595E (DG1)
    NOTE: dbwr not being msg'd to dismount
    ERROR: diskgroup DG1 was not mounted
    any help would be appreciated
    thanks a lot.

    I'm having this same problem. Did you ever find a solution?

  • Error when adding a new node to RAC 10g

    Hi all,
    I have a RAC 10g environment test in Linux Red Hat Umbreakble 5 with two nodes. This RAC is fine on 2 nodes.
    I want to add a new node (rac3) of the following way:
    - The node 1 (rac1) is started and the instance ORCL1 is online.
    - The node 2 (rac2) is offline. i.e the machine is off.
    - The node 3 (rac3). The machine is on and already configured
    So that when I execute the CRS_home\oui\bin\addnode.bat on node 1 and put the information of node 3 (Public node name, Private node name, Virtual host name) and press next I get the following message:
    OUI-35000: Fatal cluster error encountered (PRKC-1071 Nodes rac2 did not respond to ping in 30 seconds) - Sure: The machine is off;
    My question is: Can´t I add a new node on RAC if a node is off ?
    Anybody can help me.
    Thanks.
    (Wander Brazil)

    Interesting question.
    You might have better luck getting an answer if you ask where people discuss RAC, instead of asking where people report documentation issues. (Go to http://forums.oracle.com and scroll down to 'Grid Computing' to see RAC forums.)

  • How do we know the Master Node in RAC ? ?

    Hi Experts,
    We have implemented 2-Node RAC 11g R2 on Linux Platform. My query is How do we know the Master Node in RAC ? ?
    Thanks
    Venkat

    Hi,
    There is no such thing as "master node" in RAC configurations. All nodes are equal.
    Sebastian wrote: The only thing closest to something like a "Master" is that only one node has the role to update the Oracle Cluster Registry (OCR), all other nodes only read the OCR.

  • How to clone a 2-node ASM RAC db to a 3-node ASM RAC db by RMAN?

    We need to clone a 2-node ASM RAC db to a 3-node ASM RAC db by RMAN. I would think this will be about the same as a regular single db procedure by RMAN mostly. However, in 3 node RAC, there will be additional instance thread in redo (thread 1,2, and 3). Questions will be
    1. Should I use CRSCTL to add new instance (3rd)? -- I guess yes
    2. Should I create additional online redo group for thread 3? -- I guess yes
    3. Should I create addition undo tablespace? -- I guess yes
    Can any body provide a procedure of cloning the DB?
    Thanks!

    Not just easy as next, next, next
    version depenedencies and etc.

  • Solaris 2.7 to Solaris 8 Upgrade

    Hi, I'm attemting to upgrade Solaris 2.7 (11/99) to Solaris 8 (1/01) in a Sun E450 and I get an error. Now I describe the steps that I follow:
    - I insert the CD 1 of 2 of Solaris Software 8 (1/01) and I do an Stop+A with "boot cdrom"
    - We insert geographical region, the network configuration...
    - When it asks for an Actual or Initial installation I select Actual and it shows something like this:
    " The version of Solaris (solaris 2.7) of the segment c0t0d0s0 can't upgrade.
    Fsck can't verify a system archives in the archives system table (vfstab)"
    I verified from console that c0t0d0s0 is mounted in "a/" and then I've done an fsck and the partition not contents any errors

  • Solaris 10 upgrade - Major problems - PLEASE HELP

    I have a v880 running Solaris 10 11/06 (U3) which I am trying to upgrade to the latest Solaris 8/11 (U10) release without much success. I am simply using the Solaris Installation Program and booting from DVD and running the upgrade option. However the process fails with the following error:
    The selected Software exceeds the available disk space.
    The Solaris operating environment selected to upgrade contains
    a metadevice. Disk Space Re-allocation is not allowed.
    Please do one of the following:
    Deselect some software to be installed.
    Choose another version of Solaris to upgrade. (If available)
    Go back and select Initial Install.
    Exit the installation.<Press ENTER to continue>
    A df -h shows that / has 22Gb free, swap space is 3.1Gb free, /var has 7.1Gb free and /usr 3.1Gb free. All the documentation seems to show that that is ample space. I'm relatively new to Unix and Solaris so be gentle with me if I'm doing something stupid. Many thanks to all. An initial install is not an option as I need to keep the setup as is.

    It's probably /usr that it's whining about. It's not very exact when calculating space and 3.1G is not ample space these days. This is why I put everything in the / partition anymore. Don't have to worry about this crap down the line...
    You might try copying some stuff off of /usr (if you can find it) and try again.
