2 Open Directory masters: will I have Kerberos confilcts?

In the following scenerio, will I create a conflict/problem with kerberos?
A Faculty Server is faculty.mydomain.org and a separate Student Server is student.mydomain.org (yup, same domain). Both are Open Directory masters (10.4), both have kerberos running. Both are on the same network subnet 255.0.0.0. Both are running DNS.
Why are they both open directory masters? Because they need not share directory information, and it seems more secure to keep them separate worlds.
However, I'm reading the Open Directory Administration manual, and it states that if you setup an Open Directory master on a network that has an Active Directory domain, you'll then create a kerberos conflict. It doesn't address if you have 2 Open Directory masters on the same network - but the logic makes sense that you'd create the same conflict - is that true?
Thank you!

Jeff - thank you for your reply. I agree - I think I am going about this wrong. I'm stuck in a 6-yr old methodology - and it's time to move on. So, I now have a question about best practices. Would the following be my best scenerio - or would you, or others, suggest an alternative setup?
450 students with 60 desktop client computers employing network home directories, plus another 35 unbound student laptop and old desktop computers not using network or portable home directories. 50 staff members with laptops and desktops that will use a mix of portable home directories, and unbound clients.
Now, onto a 3 server setup: 1 new xServe providing Open Directory kerberos authentication services to all student and staff. 1 new MacPro running Server 10.4 for faculty home directories and services, and another identical MacPro for student home directories and services. All servers using dual ethernet aggregated links to a 1000/100 network, (servers will be 2 gigabit, wired clients will be a mix of 1000 or 100mbps, and 54mbps for wireless).
All systems are on the same network in the same building.
Should I go this route, or would an Open Directory replication server be the better way to go? Or, something else that I haven't thought of?
Any constructive thoughts appreciated!

I wonder if the disk being referred to is actually your iPod which is not plugged in. Maybe something has stuck thinking the iPod should be there.
Try completely removing all the iTunes related programs according to this method.

Restart you PC and see if startup improves.
If it doesn't improve you need to consider the possibility that there is something else going on.

  • Some Open Directory accounts will not log in

At the school where I work, the Open Directory master is running 10.6.8 Server and the clients are running 10.7.4. I am preparing images to update all the clients to 10.8.3, and I've run into a curious issue.
In our setup, we have a single Open Directory account for each classroom. They are set up for simultaneous login, and their home folders are created in /Users rather than on a network share. We have 20 or so unique room accounts, and the text boxes I'm working with now can log into almost all of them. However, there are a few that simply refuse.
When I attempt to log into one of those accounts, the login window immediately shakes as if I've put in the wrong password. However, I've confirmed that the password is correct. I've also checked through the settings of those accounts to make sure they're in line with all the rest of them. I know that they work because our lab Macs, which are currently running 10.7.4 are able to log into them just fine.
I've tried unbinding and rebinding the clients to the OD server, as well as manually creating a home folder in /Users, neither of which works. I have found a little bit of voodoo that seems to work sometimes. I have to bind to the OD server, then check "Allow Network Users at Login Window", then select "Only These Users", then add all of the available network users to the list. Then, I delete them all, restart the computer, and sometimes that works. Not always though.
Has anybody run into this before?

As far as I can tell, the server isn't logging much with regard to the passwords being refused. I have tried attempting to log in to the accounts that don't work and then checking the Open Directory logs within Server Admin, but I don't see anything either relating to that user or with a timestamp that's close to the time to log in.
On the client side, the log entry I see that relates to that user trying to log in is:
5/30/13 10:03:28.001 AM SecurityAgent[147]: User info context values set for r364epson
Which log in the Server Admin app would errors like this be likely to be logged in?

  • Unable to set up Kerberos when creating Open Directory Master-beginner!

I'm trying to promote a standalone server to an Open Directory master.
In the Kerberos section I am typing my FQDN into the Realm field
    which is studioserver.example.com.
However the searchbase is already filled with dc=studioserver,dc=local
I've tried every different permutation but when I save the settings, the overview shows that Kerberos is stopped and therefore no KDC is created.
I've used Lookup to confirm that DNS is ok...could this still be the problem?
    Any help much appreciated.

    Hi
If DNS is configured correctly then the Kerberos Realm and search base fields will be both filled in automatically. The only difficult you have to do is decide on the Directory Administrator name and password and click OK.
The only way out of this is to demote back to Standalone. This will trash the LDAP configuration and database effectively allowing you to start again. Export any users and groups first. Home folders (if you have created any) will not be affected.
Go back and stop the DNS Service and delete the configuration you have in there, stop any other service you have running as well as deleting any configuration that depends on DNS. If you have configured DHCP, stop this and delete the configuration. Restart the server. Start simple file services first, AFP etc and then move onto DNS. Make sure this is resolving correctly. Avoid .local.
Follow the instructions given in the first thread.

  • How do you bind Vista / XP clients to Open Directory?

I have an OSX Server OD Master set up in 10.5.6.
My OSX Clients can bind to it just fine using Directory Utility.
How do you bind Vista / XP clients to Open Directory masters?
    Thanks

    @ jakelh:
Make sure Kerberos is working on your server. Without it, PC logins will probably fail at least for Vista clients. Otherwise you'd have to downgrade a client-side setting on the Vista clients,
    http://www.builderau.com.au/blogs/codemonkeybusiness/viewblogpost.htm?p=33927074 6
DNS is critical here, but Vista can have a problem with things that are correctly configured.
IE: Vista defaults to a TCP/IP setting that can make it incompatible with existing network hardware

  • Open directory server crashing every 30 days / clients unable to connect to calendar, contacts server

    Hello everyone,
I am running an up to date Mavericks Server which serves exclusively as a calendar and contacts server for about two dozens devices. The server is reachable via DynDNS, however, the public IP hardly ever changes (only once or twice a year maybe). Tried setting the OS X DNS Server to serve "all clients" and "some clients".
For about 6 months (i.e. also under Mountain Lion), I am having a very strange problem. Roughly every 20-30 days, clients will not be able to connect to the server, instead getting a "wrong password" dialog. Restarting the open directory server will help for the next 30 days.
I have tried repairing the database as detailed here, however, the issue persists.
Any help would be highly appreciated!
I would have tried setting up a clean server installation, migrating calendars/contacts manually and re-adding all users by hand, however, I am not aware of an easy way to do so. The terminal command for calendar backup is broken under mavericks (might work with this workaround) and re-adding users manually would apparently involve correcting user UUIDs afterwards in order to match the migrated calendar data. Do you know of a better approach?
    Thanks a lot!

  • Open Directory Storing AD information

I am looking for documentation that explains that Open Directory does NOT house Active Directory account information (passwords specifically). It is my understanding that when a server is set up as an Open Directory master, it only references Active directory to authenticate a username/password to grant permission for access to an application.

    Hi
On 10.3.x Server Server Admin would always list Open Directory as running (basically the green light would be on by the side of the service). This is normal, what is more important is what is stated as the Server Role in the Overview window. On 10.4.x Server Server Admin does not act in the same way. Open Directory Services will be listed as running (in other words the green light is on by the side of the service) if the Server Role changes from Standalone to any one of the other 3 roles it can be configured for. On 10.3 Server you had the choice of 3 roles, on 10.4 Server there are 4 roles.
The question regarding the Active Directory is harder to figure out especially as you can see PC clients. Launch Server Admin, click the disclosure triangle to display the list of services and post back which services have the green light by the side of them. In the meantime find out the IP address or DNS hostname of the AD Server and see if you can ping it. Use Network Utility in /Applications/Utilities.

  • How can I enforce Parental Controls on a group of network users on an Open Directory client?

I have a Mac mini running OS X Server (Mountain Lion) and have a client family iMac that is a client of the Open Directory server. I have created network users for my kids and put them into a group and created Parental Control restrictions that apply to members of the group. However, the kids can log into the iMac with the same network accounts and no Parental Control policies are enforced on the iMac.
I'd like to restrict times and hours per day, as well as the obvious content/website restrictions. I'm not sure why the Parental Control policy isn't being enforced. While I'm not great at it, I do have a basic understanding/overview of knowledge on Windows Server administration, but OS X Server seems to be waaay different...
I have fiddled with the certificate, and I have told the client iMac to trust the certificate coming from my Open Directory server, but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference with the enforcement of the kids group's Parental Control policies.
Can anyone assist or offer any suggestions?

    Thanks for your interest.

Hello cor-el, thanks for your reply. I changed my settings for downloads to desktop and it has appeared on there. When I double click I am asked which program I want to open file. I click firefox and another box "opening install" says I have chosen to open the file which is an application and do I want to save it. This is the only real option so I press save file. I get a box saying this is an executable file which may contain viruses - do you want to run. I press ok and the final box showing C drive file name and desktop appears stating application not found.
This happens the same whenever I try to install.
To my untrained eye the application is not being recognised as an application and I cannot work out how to get it to do that.
My plugin is still showing as out of date.
Is there anything you could suggest. Thanks for your time.

  • Pages will no longer let me open files that I have previously downloaded, worked on and then saved on my mac. However it will let me open pages documents that I have started from new. I need the other documents to open and can't figure it out. PLEASE

I just got my mac a month ago so go easy on me but I was just working with the pages that was already on it, and then today I know it updated, and now I am unable to open a lot of my documents!:(  Idk what you mean by the icloud version lol sorry! As for the version, when I open pages from my apps and click 'about' it says version 5.1? And when I open the document it just goes grey and kind of blinks and doesnt open? No error message or any indication of why it will not open now when I for sure have opened it in the past! Andddd for the OS X I think it is 10.9.1 ??

my macbook is going to sleep while I'm working or viewing something. I will sometimes have to open and close it several times to get it to "wake up" again. Also, no sound comes out of my Macbook. I only hear with earbuds or headphones. Any suggestions?

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq "Previous Shutdown" | tail | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
