2 out of 3 iMacs died recently.  Both were a year old.  What is going on?

I purchased 2 new iMacs last year and both have died. One required a new hard drive and a new screen. The other one was dead when I walked into the office today. Is there a problem with others as well? Fortunately they are covered by Apple Care but I'm a little worried they will do the same thing a year from now once the warranty is over. Everything is backed up, I am just concerned about longevity.

Long, highly technical, nuanced article a lot of which is way over my head. But there is this:
protection do you need? A discussion of the power protection requirements of today's computer systems invariably involves references to the CBEMA curve, named for the Computer and Business Manufacturers Association, which was renamed the Information Technology Industry Council in 2000 (Fig. 1 at right). Although this graph illustrates the degree to which electronic systems should tolerate voltage variations, its application has two fundamental shortcomings.
_First, most modern computers use switched mode power supplies (SMPS) capable of tolerating voltage variations much higher than those shown in the curve._

Roger: both of our reports are completely anecdotal; certainly, statistically nothing to bet the ranch on, but I have seen what appears to be a disproportionate number of possibly heat related failures of one kind or another for the 24s right here in this forum.

I have had two previous work MacBooks that died and both were authorized, however, now I can't reauthorize my new laptop because I have reached my limit of 5 systems authorized when technically, I only have 3 authorized.  Any suggestions?

Deauthorize all, then authorize the active computers.

Just got brand new macbook pro (13inch) and restored all data from old mac via time machine. Now when I p/back a track in logic I get audio drop out for 3-4 secs every 10 - 15 secs!! What is going on and what can I do? Its the same version of logic and all other functions seem fine!

First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

I have a 9 year old  iMac g5 and I'm about to start a photography course therefore would like to purchase and install photoshop.

The  wording is confusing. I just tried one of the DLs and it is working. Whether it will actually install now, I have no idea. If the activation servers have been disabled (because of a technical issue), probably not. Whether this is only temporary, I have no idea. I would think Adobe would just withdraw the entire page if they wanted. From the time this first appeared a few weeks ago until now I know it was working and could be installed using the provided serial #s. There was nothing about needing to actually have purchased it originally.
    Ginger:
I downloaded CS2 from the Adobe site BEFORE this recent notice was posted and it is the only version that I have and use.
The new notice is VERY confusing, because if you were a prior purchaser of it originally, why would you need their newly supplied serial number (which is what I use since I was NOT a prior purchaser. But again, when I downloaded and installed CS2 there was no such notice).
I suggest that you see if it downloads, installs and works with that serial number, as free is always better than not!   (especially since it is known that iMac G5's are prone to hardware failure from bad capacitors! I had many of them...)

I don't know how strict the OS requirements are. I do know that my old G5 iMac, even upgraded to Leopard, was able to run CS2. In fact, using Rosetta, CS2 still runs on my Snow Leopard.
As you can see from the image, CS2 is running in my Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) environment in Parallels concurrently with Lion.

  • Since updating to iOS 6, my iPad 2 keeps loosing connection with iTunes. I have tried changing the date, logging out then back in, iTunes is updated.....what's going on???? I can't update any apps nor can I download new ones.....

What's going on with iOS6...... Since I updated to it, I have had nothing but hassles....

Are you losing the connection to iTunes on the iPad or the computer? You are saying that iTunes is updated. Of course iTunes is updated when you update the iOS software. That's a no brainer.
If you mean that iTunes is updated on the computer, that has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with downloading and updating apps on the iPad itself so changing the date on the iPad, signing in and out of the stores on the iPad .... Doing any of that on the iPad would have nothing to do with iTunes on your computer.
If .... you have not been able to connect to the iTunes or app stores at all on the iPad - try this ...
Settings>Privacy>Location Services>System Services (swipe to the bottom of the page to find this)>Location Based iAds>Off.
If the downloads are stalled or "waiting" - try these suggestions.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
If you can't connect at all - you can also try rebooting your router. Unplug it from power for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again.

  • I have an iMac computer that's a few years old.  I just recently updated to lion, and also updated my adobe app.  After restarting the computer I can no longer get safari to run.  Instead of opening it send up an error message.

If anyone has any ideas on how to get safari back up and running I'd greatly appreciate it!
    Sent from my iPad

    Hi there,
You're running an old version of Safari. Before troubleshooting, try updating it to the latest version: 6.0. You can do this by clicking the Apple logo in the top left, then clicking Software update.
You can also update to the latest version of OS X, 10.8 Mountain Lion, from the Mac App Store for $19.99, which will automatically install Safari 6 as well, but this isn't essential, only reccomended.
Thanks, let me know if the update helps,
    Nathan

  • Time is running out on my MBP battery- 25 minutes.....What's going on?

I don't know if it's something I did or I have had some gray cells die today but I took my MBP somewhere this morning using the battery. Plenty of charge left when I got home. I plugged in the laptop in it's spot and plugged in the charger. But it's not charging! It shows I only have 25 minutes remaining and when I pull down the menu, the words, Power Source: Power Adapter are grayed out. So what am I doing wrong? Is there something wrong with my 2 month old MBP? I tried unplugging it from the surge protector and plugging directly into the wall but no luck. The little light is amber. Any ideas?
    Desperately seeking battery help, Judy

Apparently I have been unobservant AND my blonde roots are showing because in talking to Apple support today (yes, they are open on Sat.!), the number in the menu bar is counting UP, not counting down as I thought......... Oh, well, what else can I say but thanks for listening. I will go now and hide somewhere....... Have a nice day, me
PS- still seems like the words up in the menu (indicating what is the source for power), they should be
    black not grayed out.......

  • MacBook pro died and not even 2 years old?

Has any else been told the main logic board is dead? With an over $1000 replace fee...
Can I at least send it in for parts and get a discount on a new computer?
No explanation on how it died, because apple doesn't know, just that it isn't liquid damage or power surge.. Spent $150 just to find out that I either need to spend over a grand on repair or just get a new computer .. This MacBook was 'made' online with bigger hard drive ect ect.. So sad :(
Does anyone have any insight or help?.. Suppose I should have spent the extra $400 on apple care .. I just didn't think after spending over $2000 on a laptop that it wouldn't even last at least 3 years.. Especially with everyone saying that apple is the best!
I'm really disappointed and feel that maybe I shouldn't replace my MacBook with an apple product.
Sorry if this question is blunt but it's my third time writing it on an iPhone with a lag and then decided to wipe my previous questions before I could post them :/
Thank you for any help :)

  • Brand new 2012 fully loaded iMac is slower then my two year old iMac when using Final Cut.

Just got a new 2012 iMac with 32GB RAM 3.4 Ghz and 3TB Fusion Drive and 2GB Graphics card.
Now Final Cut runs even slower than it does on my old, lesser iMac. What gives?
How Do I optimize the speed in which the video files are played?
    I'm using Final Cut 7.
Files are all 1080 Pro Res.
All files are running off of my desktop (locally).
I press play and it is delayed a second before playing on the timeline.
I thought this fully loaded machine was to help me edit faster.
Is the Fusion Drive doing something funny with the file access that causes a delay in playback?
The problem is, the same issue happened when I put the files on an external FW800 G-Drive.
    Any advice would be awesome.
    Thanks Community!
    -Tedshots

are you sure all your files...render files...scratch disk, etc were all pointed to the FW800 drive?
are you trying to play the exact same files in the same manner and see the new imac slower or does it just "seem" slower. You could, for instance, be attempting to play a more compressed file on the new iMac or a higher resolutidon compressed file....we don't know any of that. Apple to Apples, as it were, the new machine will obviously outperform the other one and there are too many variables you haven't covered to be able to draw any real conclusions....tell us more about the specific kinds of files, timeline resolution, video res on both machines and in what way the new one is slower....

That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A stale or corrupt kernel cache
    A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
    Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model. Memory that is either slower or faster than specified may be incompatible.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
If your system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least  two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Recent TM Backups Unavailable - Year Old Backups OK!

I use a 17" MacBook Pro, with a 1TB Lacie drive as TM backup via FW800.
Time Machine used to work fine - backed up the MBP properly, and allowed me to restore stuff when necessary.
However, I hadn't accessed TM (apart from automated backups) for quite a while, and now when I do so I have a problem. I see a comprehensive list of backup dates & times on the timeline, but none of them are actually available to restore, unless I spin back as far as November 2007.
The finder windows in the centre of the screen are all blacked out, apart from the front one (representing the current status) and a collection of very old ones at the back, corresponding to the November 2007 backups.
Since TM seems to "know" that there have been regular backups in the intervening 10 months, (the timeline is not empty) is there any way to access this backup-up data, or has it been lost?

One would think.. wait for it... that Apple would turn on the "warn me before deleting backups" check box by default. Seems that TM did a full backup after restore, deleting the last 14 months of backup, no warning, no option, nothing. Not terribly user-friendly. If you restore from backup, it looks like you are given a whole 120 seconds before TM fires up and makes its arbitrary decision.
I know that I lost about 120 photos (imported two weeks ago - why were they not restored?). I have made use of TM more than a few times to recover missing files - hopefully I have no need to do so going forward, at least for nothing older than the last 48 hours.
I am not sure why the re-install of 10.6 failed either. I run a very plain-vanilla system, but have been hammered with kernel panics, print freezing, Safari freezes, and the like since the 10.6.2 updater. I can count the number of really aggravating issues I have had with my two dozen or so Macs over the last decade on one hand, but all of those aggravations have led to lost data. What good is a backup system that self-deletes and does not restore all data fully anyway?
C'mon, Apple. Lets fix this. It seems pretty simple from this point of view.

  • HT4528 I have an iphone 3. The screen is cracked (some is even missing),the power button is dead, the headphone jack is almost broken & it has been glitching. I know it will die soon because its 4 years old and overused. How should i/can i back up my phot

this phone is my life. i share an itunes account with my mom and she deletes every photo i put in photo stream to keep for my new phone or ipod. so how should i back up my photots?

First things first if your iPhone cannot be recognised by your computer then you wont be able to get those photos off the iPhone.
In the event that it can be recognised you could import the photos to your PC/Mac. Follow the article below to do this:
iOS: Importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices
Or you could do a back up on iTunes of the iPhone which would save the photos in your camera roll. The article below will guide you on how to do this:

  • HT1904 I  have recently bought my 6 year old an iPod touch I have set an email and password for it but wen we try to download free apps in the app store we have to go through verification and then it says that there is a minimum age restriction and disall

When trying to download free apps it says there is a  minimum age resriction and disallows

The apps are getting the age of your 6-year old from the Apple ID. I am not sure if there is anything you can do about it.
