2 questions: cd's and saving mpg's

I have many multisession cds burned with Nero on Windows. Nero has no Mac version. Is there a program that will allow my Mini to read them?
Also, I am having trouble saving mpg's to disc. They will play with Quicktime in my browser, but when I click on them in the movies folder, I get an error saying they couldn't be opened. File size is only 4KB no matter what I try to save.

It's difficult to see how you could have wisely spent as much as $1200 for a Mac mini based system in the first place - it is an entry level system after all, and the fact it is possible to max out RAM and add expensive extras and peripherals doesn't mean that it's necessarily wise to do so... particularly if not certain that it will perform the tasks you have in mind for it.
As much as the majority of those who use mac systems are entirely happy that they do, it has to be said that Mac systems and MacOS is not perfect, and in a world where the majority of users are PC/Windows based, it's not surprising that many providers of services, software and content are focused primarily on supporting that majority. Sometimes that means things don't work well, or at all, on a Mac. That's one reason it's important to ensure that a Mac will work at the tasks needed for it, because where those needs relate to certain things, it may well not.
In your case, it is still far from clear from your posts here, exactly what it is that you are trying to do and why you are not able to do it. Aside from complaints that something doesn't work that you want to work, you haven't given an example, or detail, sufficient that we can see what the problem is, let alone the solution. If it comes to the point that the expenditure you genuinely need to lay out for a Mac system that does what a Windows PC at less cost could have done, and that is your only real need, then I suspect that indeed you're right - a PC might have been a better proposition. There are certainly things a PC can do better than a Mac, just as there are things a Mac can do rather better than a PC.

  • Fundamental Question about Lightroom and saving images

    I have to laugh as I get ready to pose this question because I've been working with the program for two weeks with Scott Kelby's book and with Lynda.com, and I'm still profoundly confused about what is happening to the photo. To wit: I open a camera raw file in lightroom and start playing with it, even taking snapshots at various stages along the way. If I don't export the photo to Photoshop and save it there, what becomes of these changes? Do they stay with the photo always? Do they disappear when I shut down the program? There's no SAVE button with Lightroom which just plain flummoxes me! Can anyone 'splain this to me, please? Thanks.

    To clarify. Nothing happens to your originals. Lightroom stores the edits in a database (and if you wish alongside the original in a xmp sidecar file) as a set of instructions that the program uses to recreate the end product by following the instructions. These instructions are changed in the database while you're changing parameter values in Lightroom, so there is no need to save. Also, Lightroom stores a history of changes you did, so you can always go back. Both Lightroom and Adobe's camera raw plugin for photoshop can be used to follow the set if instructions. This way, you always get the highest fidelity image and you can always go back to your development choices without loosing any quality or having to dig up backups. Because of this, you can create multiple virtual copies with different development approaches without having to make a copy of the original and therefore saving you gobs and gobs of disk space. When you need a file for consumption such as a jpeg for a web page, simply export a copy, which burns in your development changes in a developed copy (just like printing a negative would have in the olden days) and trash the copy when you're done with it. You can always recreate it very quickly. This is a radically different approach than you're probably used to.

  • Noob question about JWT and saving/loading midlet states

    Hi,
    I am currently playing with a midlet in JWT - it's actually a Java game. I want to "save" particular states of the midlet and then load them. For example, while playing the game, a multiple choice question appears. I want to save the exact progress up until that point in time, choose one of the answers, view the feedback and then load the saved state and try again with another answer.
    I used a lot of game console to PC emulators, and almost all of them support saving and loading states. Does JWT have such a feature? If not, do you know of any Java ME emulator that has it?
    Cheers,
    Tiberiu

    Yes, I am aware. But that does not answer my question.

  • BIG QUESTION ABOUT BUSSES AND SAVING DSP MUST READ

    I have a major issue that i need to resolve. I created a really nice bass line to a track but i would like to save the plugin settings and move them to a bus just incase i want to use the same effects again to save dsp. When i remove the original plugins from the bassline audio instrument track and move them to the buss (then play the) bass line with the audio instrment effects empty just using the buss effects that i originally made it sound completely different. As if all the wormth of the sound went away? Why is this? i know on projects that i work on when they get later into the project i always get a dsp issue.
    What is the best way to use repeated plugin settings instead of copy and pasting them?

    Hi,
    Are you using a 'send' to the bus, or are you routing the entire channel to the bus? (e.g. setting channel output to 'Output1-2' but 'Bus 1' etc). I would suggest routing the entire signal.
    Also, have you checked the settings are the same on the bus effects. Some presets will have a completely different dry/wet mix when inserted into a bus, rather than an audio or audio instrument channel. This is especially the case for reverbs, delays etc.
    With regards to using 'Save as Channel Strip' options, I don't think you can save a strip from one audio object type, and have it available to another. That is, you can't save an audio or audio instrument channel strip and load it into a Bus, at least the last time I looked! I sometimes wish you could, though...

    softwarespecial wrote:
    why can't I have the prefs saved in the .h
    You can save that address in an ivar if you want to, but there's no purpose to that. The standardUserDefaults object is a +shared class object+. It's like a dictionary object that's maintained for your program by the NSUserPreferences class. You can read from or write to it at any time for the duration of your program. So whenever you get the shared object's address [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults], you're just getting the address of that same object each time.
    In case the above doesn't make sense, I ran across a good explanation by Danneman in the last message on this page: [http://www.iphonedevsdk.com/forum/iphone-sdk-development/18716-set-settings-va riable-code.html].
    When I did that as you so wisely pointed out it didn't work but when I saved it at each point I needed it it works.
    When you change two things at once it's easy to forget the first and assume the second change solved the problem. Actually, I don't think saving prefs in your ivar had anything to do with your bug. What fixed it was getting a pointer to the shared std defaults object in this method:
    -(void)permsavedattime
    NSUserDefaults *prefs = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; <-- get the shared object
    tddate=[prefs stringForKey:@"testing"];
    tdtime=[prefs stringForKey:@"timetesting"];
    dateoutput.text =[[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"%@",tddate];
    Without the first line of the above, I'm fairly sure that your prefs ivar was nil. I didn't see any code that initialized that ivar prior to the first time userdefaultdate ran. It looked to me like permsavedattime ran at start up, well before prefs was set in userdefaultdate. If you're interested in backtracking, restore the file to the way it was when you posted, then add a NSLog() like this:
    -(void)permsavedattime
    // NSUserDefaults *prefs = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; <-- get the shared object
    NSLog(@"prefs=%@", prefs);
    tddate=[prefs stringForKey:@"testing"];
    tdtime=[prefs stringForKey:@"timetesting"];
    dateoutput.text =[[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"%@",tddate];
    I wish to save lets say five different things to NSUSerDefaults would I be able to do it all with my NSUserDefaults prefs or would I have to create a another one for some of them?
    You know the answer to your second question now, right? The important point is that you're never creating the shared object, you're just asking for its address whenever you need it.
    Btw, there's another user defaults method you should know about: The synchronize method writes the data to disk. You might want to do that when your app is ready to exit. E.g., in the app delegate:
    - (void)applicationWillTerminate:(UIApplication *)application {
    NSUserDefaults *prefs = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults];
    [prefs synchronize];
    Although the docs suggest synchronize when the app is about to exit, I'm not sure it's necessary. I think the system might write the defaults out to disk anyway when the app terminates, but not sure about this. +User Defaults Programming Topics for Cocoa+ says:
    On Mac OS X v10.5 and later, in applications in which a run-loop is present, synchronize is automatically invoked at periodic intervals. Consequently, you might synchronize before exiting a process, but otherwise you shouldn’t need to.
    The above is in the iPhone edition, so I think it applies.
    It might also be a good idea to update the data and call resetStandardUserDefaults in didReceiveMemoryWarning. I'm not clear about the need for reset either though, since the system may do that for you as well. But on a memory warning, you would definitely want to update the user default data if some of it is stored in an object to be released. You can find out how your app behaves on a memory warning by selecting Hardware->Simulate Memory Warning from the iPhone Simulator menu.

    Travel and detours have kept me from following up sooner. If the problem that you wrote about still persists.....
    Let us go back over that Adobe document regarding troubleshooting damaged projects.
    3. Delete the Application Preferences
    Where you able to follow that path and delete the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file at the end of the path? And, after you did, did the saved/closed programs still refuse to open? If you could not carry out this procedure, what were the limiting factors that kept you from do
    7. Test to see if individual media files are causing the problem.
    That is an important one. How far did you get into following the instructions given in the document? If you could not complete the test, what was the major block that prevented you from doing so?
    I want to make sure that we have gone through everything in that document and ruled all factors there in or out. If it was a matter of you not understanding the instructions, I am hoping that the above will channel you questions to me so that I can clarify anything that you did not understand in the Adobe document instructions.
    I do not recall if I asked previously. Even if you cannot open all your saved/closed projects, can you still open a new project and save/close it? Maybe even reopen it?
    Please review and consider.
    Thank you.

  • A few questions about MacBooks and Parallels Desktop.

    I have a few questions about MacBooks and Parallels Desktop.
    1) I understand I need at least 1GB of RAM to run Parallels Desktop but what about the hard drive, is the stock 60GB drive big enough?
    2) Related to question 1, even if it was big enough to allow me to install and run Windows would the 60GB drive be enough if I wanted to install a Linux distribution as well?
    3) This has nothing to do with Parallels Desktop but thought I'd ask it here anyway, do Apple Stores carry just the stock MacBooks, or do they carry other configurations?
    Thanks
    Keith

    1. Depend on how intensive you use that HD for saving data on both Mac OS and XP. For standard installation on both OS X and XP, the space of 60 Gb is enough.
    2. Same answer as no 1. You can install all three on that HD space, but the extra spacce available will be less and less for your data. You can save your data on external or back up on cd/dvd and erase it from the HD to keep the free space.
    Remember to leave at least 2 or 3 Gb for virtual memory usage.
    3. Just call them, maybe they don't have it in store stock, but by appointment they might configure one for you before your pick-up date.

  • Photoshop bug: Smart Objects overwriting other Smart Objects when edited and saved in Illustrator

    Experiencing issues when working with a large number (over 200) vector smart objects brought into Photoshop CS4 from Illustrator.
    Things seemed to be going along nicely; if I needed to edit a Smart Object, I could double-click it, it would open in Illustrator and then I could edit and save it.  Return to Photoshop and the Smart Object is updated.  Swell and dandy.  The issue started happen when I hit a large quantity of either vector smart objects (remember, over 200) or the many layers and groups within Photoshop (must be over 500).  When I would double-click, open, edit, and save the vector Smart Object, the Photoshop Smart Object I was working on would update AND another/several other Smart Objects would update as well.  Which, of course, would ruin the artwork, as suddenly I was seeing several instances of the same object.  If it hadn't have been for ForeverSave, I many not have recovered the work.
    It's rather hard to isolate the issue to see what's causing the problem.  Here are some of the possible causes:
    Running Snow Leopard on Mac
    Many, many Smart Objects in file, perhaps enough to ruin the naming convention and cause bugs when Photoshop referenced the temp file
    Many, many Photoshop layers and groups
    Illustrator vector files copy+pasted from several different files (affects the naming convention perhaps?)
    Some groups/layers in Photoshop are duplicates
    To help make it a little clearer, you should know:
    Running the most updated software / OS (that is until CS5 comes out)
    Smart Objects showed no error until I had actually opened, edited, and saved the referenced temp file (i.e. VectorSmartObject1.ai)
    Files saved and worked on from Dropbox (network folder)
    Not looking for much of an answer to this question; I just wanted to see if anyone else had come across this bug.  Also, Adobe PLEASE look into this as you begin testing for the next update.  I have the file(s) if you need to replicate the issue.  My best guess is that the naming convention of Vector Smart Objects has an odd character limit so when Vector Smart Object 200.ai is saved, Vector Smart Object 2.ai gets overwritten.

    Have you tested this with Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator CS5? (the current versions, that came out last month)
    If you duplicated a smart object layer, both layers refer back to the same file content. So when you change the file, both layers would be updated.  That is intentional and explained in your manual.  If you didn't realize this, that could explain what you are seeing.
    If you placed separate files, then they should not be updated at the same time, because they will refer to separate files.
    Yes, Smart Objects only update when you save the file.
    You would need over 4 billion smart objects in one document to get Photoshop confused about which one refers to which file.  And since the layer limit is much less than 4 billion, I doubt that is the cause.
    There is no naming convention involved. We don't limit the filenames (except to platform standards and to include a file type extension).

    Hi I need your guidance on how I should go about setting up my Excel 2013 reports so that others in our Project Online 2013 environment can access and updates these reports of mine.
    My questions are as follows:
    I presume I need to create and save my ODC files in a PWA > Data Connections folder.  I have English and French users in our environment.  Do I need save them twice?  Once in the French and again in the English Data Connections folder?
     Likewise for the Excel file?
    How should I go about creating my ODC files within Excel?  By default, the ODC files are being created on my PC's > My Documents > My Data Sources folder.  I presume I need to get them saved or exported to the PWA > Data Connections
    folder. So, How should I be going about creating and saving and/ or exporting the ODC files???

    Thank you Guilaume.  May I ask you to help clarify a bit more for me?  If I have to do it for both languages (the reports and ODC files), do I simply copy the same ODC files from e.g., the English to French folder in PWA (Odc files)?  Or does
    that defeat the purpose?  Or, do I need to create a new set of oData Feed Connection files with a French version of Excel 2013 and save them to the French Data Connections folder in PWA?  Do I need to have a French version of Excel 2013 to create
    French ODC files and ultimately French based reports and/ or vice versa?
    I did notice that the following oData metadata command from within a browser produces different results (ie., English versus French metadata returned) depending on who runs it (i.e., French or English user, etc).  As you can see I am a bit confused.
     Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

  • Few fundamental Question- Project IMG and BBPs

    Dear All
    I have few basic question and will appreciate answers ,. points will be awarded as well.
    1. Is there any difference between Enterprise IMG and Project IMG ( or is there any thing such as Enterprise IMG exists in Solman).
    2. Can scope of project IMG be changed once it has been creted and saved. ( if yes then Steps plz)
    3.How to create BBP nodes in Solar02 based on Project IMG.
    Regards

    Hi Nayab,
    1. In simple terms, Project IMG is a sub-set of Enterprise IMG, based on what you scope in. It can also be a mirror image of Enterprise IMG (meaning - all entries can be included in Project IMG). If you go to SPRO transaction in the given satellite system (R/3, CRM ...), you'll find different icons in front of each IMG node, under Project IMG - that is to let you 'document' your activities. Enterprise IMG is the core or reference IMG that SAP provides out of the box.
    2. Yes. it can be changed. But, I am unable to list steps here
    3. By BBP nodes in SOLAR02, what did you mean ? I have heard the term BPP (Business Process Procedure) or BB (Business Blueprint). Can you elaborate please.
    Also, the whole topic of Project IMG Vs. Enterprise IMG is about the satellite system involved  and not on SolMan's own configuration.

  • Generating XML from SQL queries and saving to an xml file?

    Hi there,
    I was wondering if somebody could help with regards to the following:
    Generating XML from SQL queries and saving to a xml file?
    We want to have a procedure(PL/SQL) that accepts an order number as an input parameter(the procedure
    is accessed by our software on the client machine).
    Using this order number we do a couple of SQL queries.
    My first question: What would be our best option to convert the result of the
    queries to xml?
    Second Question: Once the XML has been generated, how do we save that XML to a file?
    (The XML file is going to be saved on the file system of the server that
    the database is running on.)
    Now our procedure will also have a output parameter which returns the filename to us. eg. Order1001.xml
    Our software on the client machine will then ftp this XML file(based on the output parameter[filename]) to
    the client hard drive.
    Any information would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanking you,
    Francois

    If you are using 9iR2 you do not need to do any of this..
    You can create an XML as an XMLType using the new SQL/XML operators. You can insert this XML into the XML DB repository using DBMS_XDB.createResource. You can then access the document from the resource. You can also return the XMLType containing the XML directly from the PL/SQL Procedure.

  • Loading and Saving problem in 2D space based rpg

    I am implementing a system in which the game saves the offset of the default position of an object in space and the object's position when the game is saved and applying that to the objects when the game is loaded. I get a strange problem however where every other undock after loading the game is far far away in space. I think it has something to do with the saved position of the object you docked with. Here is the code involved in loading the game (it just calls IO.java via dataAgent and gets data from a file)
    public void loadGame() throws FileNotFoundException, IOException {
            //load the game
            String[] tmpData = null;
            tmpData = dataAgent.loadGame();
            //interpet the data
            hud.currentDockedCelestialObject = Integer.parseInt(tmpData[0]) - 1;
            player.currentWallet = Integer.parseInt(tmpData[1]) - 1;
            player.currentSolarSystem = space[hud.currentDockedCelestialObject].solar;
            hud.renderMode = 1;
            hud.player = player;
            hud.space = space;
            hud.dPressed = true; //tell HUD we are docked at something
            //now we need to determine the position of all the celestial objects based on the saved position of the object in question
            int tmpx = Integer.parseInt(tmpData[2]) - 1;
            int tmpy = Integer.parseInt(tmpData[3]) - 1;
            //compare it to the docked celestial
            int changex = space[hud.currentDockedCelestialObject].positionX - tmpx;
            int changey = space[hud.currentDockedCelestialObject].positionY - tmpy;
            //apply the offset to all the objects in the current solar system
            for (int i = 0; i < space.length; i++) {
                if (space.solar.matches(player.currentSolarSystem)) {
    space[i].positionX += changex;
    space[i].positionY += changey;
    //now we need to load the ship type
    player.ship.type = Integer.parseInt(tmpData[4]);
    //configure the shields and hulls
    configureLoadedShip();
    //finish up
    hud.space = space;
    hud.player = player;
    Configureloadedship() just makes a call to apply the correct weapons and armor to the ship you have. Here is the saving code:public void saveGame() {
    //saves the game
    String[] toSave = new String[5];
    toSave[0] = "" + (hud.currentDockedCelestialObject + 1);
    toSave[1] = "" + (hud.player.currentWallet + 1);
    toSave[2] = "" + (space[hud.currentDockedCelestialObject].positionX);
    toSave[3] = "" + (space[hud.currentDockedCelestialObject].positionY);
    toSave[4] = "" + (hud.player.ship.type);
    try {
    dataAgent.saveGame(toSave);
    } catch (IOException ex) {
    Logger.getLogger(Main.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
    Adding and subtracting 1 durring load and save solved the problem of the java file reader skipping the 0 values in the first few lines of the saved game file.
    The game is loaded when the game starts and saved when you dock.
    Ty in advance for your help.
