2 questions (garage band, VST related)

1. I tried opening a garageband project in Logic Express 7.2 (running an intel mac..) but I couldn't hear any sound but the volume meters were going up and down. Does anyone know what could be wrong ?
p.s the project works fine in Garageband
2. I have the Nomad Factory Blue Tubes bundle but can I use it in Logic Express ? It's a VST plug-in
MacBook Pro 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

1.
This sounds like a bug to me
2.
VST plugins don't work in Logic or GB. Never did. There is a so-called VST-wrapper commercially available, but this is only a work-around. The vendor should provide an AudioUnit plugin.
In your case this wrapper wouldn't help anyway, because you need an Intel-Plugin, not a PowerPC. Again: give the vendor feedback!

  • I recently submitted a question re. the volume which when I send from Garage Band 2008

I recently submitted a question re. sharing music I create and send from Garage Band 2008 to iTunes 11.1.1. I create a slide show in iPhoto 2008 and export to Quicktime (latest version) and ultimately to YouTube. By the time the file gets to Quicktime, the volume has defaulted to a low level which is unacceptable. This never happened until I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. How can I keep the volume? Must I update all of my iLife software?

    export the exact length:

  • Ridiculously simple audio editing question for Garage Band

Ok, so this is really a fundamental
    question. It concerns editing technique.
In analog mixing, the editor put
the sounds to be saved in the right
places on each of several tracks --
    narration, sound effects, lip sync,
music, etc. The tracks were then
all locked together and the mixer
adjusted the volumes to either save
    or reject audio information.
A blank master received the information
and that was your final product,
in sync, sprocket by sprocket, with
    the video.
My question, then, is, how do you
do it in digital multitrack such as
Garage Band? Are you aiming to have
4 or 5 tracks all level controlled
or do you simple erase unwanted
sound, or what exactly do you do,
in post production? If you are going
to do a voice over, then you have to
do a mix at some point, not just a
cut and paste. What's the philosophy,
if you don't mind my asking?
    Thanks,
    Ed

Wow... you gave me flashbacks to a movie soundtrack I scored, with separate reels of tape all synced up and whirling away for final mixdown!
To answer your question as best I can in a paragraph or two, digital mixing is unlimited compared to analog. Whereas tape has a physical limit, you can always add another digital track (there are limitations to digital, but they are becoming harder to reach as systems become increasingly powerful). So no need to erase. Editing is also a breeze. Digital tracks are endlessly malleable, with virtually every parameter available for automation.
Sometimes you might mix down to stems or mix everything down to a stereo master (or alternative mixes) for post production. Similarly, in post, they can deal with huge numbers of digital tracks from different sources.
In terms of a professional workflow, Logic is the more typical choice over Garageband, and includes a number of features designed for scoring to picture: variable sample rates, frame rates, etc.
Gain staging in digital recording is different than in analog, and it requires a different approach to achieve excellent sounding results. But the digital workflow is so much more flexible, forgiving, and economical, that it has been the death-knell for the analog workflow. Infinite bussing, routing, mixing, comping, storing, stemming... infinite possibilities, really!

J'ignore comment faire, si quelqu'un veux bien m'aider s'il vous plait ?
    Vous en remerciant.]

I have found audio unit and DLS, but what should i DO NEXT ?
In the panel, select the VST plug-in. (where it says "Banque de sons")
If your VST is not showing there, it is either not installed correctly in the ~/Library/Audio/Sounds/Banks/  folder, or it is incompatible with the current GarageBand version.
GarageBand 10.0 can only use 64bit VST plug-ins, that conform to the "sandboxing" requirements. Check at the manufacturer's site, if you have the newest versions of your plug-ins, or if there are updates available. If yes, update. • How do I reach MattMattMatt who attempted to answer my question about garage band?

I am having trouble removing a part of an instrumental track (within a region, not at the beginning or end of the whole track).  MattMattMatt sent me this answer:
Put the big vertical pointer at the view point where you've had enough.  Make a cut (Command T).
    Ok, so far, so good.
Next, click anywhere else in the work area to deselect and then select the part you want to remove, and click it and delete.
Click what anywhere else?  The vertical pointer?  Use a choice in the Edit menu  (cut? split?) ?  What should happen on the screen at this point?
I've tried several things.  Whatever I do when I click delete, the whole track (region) disappears.  I start again...... no progress.  I think I need a little more detail in the procedure you are describing to me.  Forgive me, I'm new to Garage Band and so far it's been trial and error learning.

I thought I heard someone call my name.

Great. To confirm, where there was once one musical region, there should now be two subdivisions, one to the left and one to the right of where you cut it.

No problem. Hopefully this will clarify.
After you've done the Command T and split the track where you want to split it, you want to refresh your clicker in advance of selecting and tossing the particular region you want to toss.
    So...
move your cursor into the Neutral Region, the gray work area in the middle of the GB workspace where there are no tracks (and it likely says "Drag Apple Loops Here") and just click your mouse.
You're basically telling anything else that happens to think it's clicked to unclick. At this point, nothing should be selected.
Then, go back to your original region that you've split into two with the Command T. Of those two region, click on the one you want to get rid of. It will light up, telling you it's selected.
Then, click delete on your keyboard, and the selected region - and only the selected region - should dissapear.

  • Recording questions for garage band

Hi I thank you in advance for your help, advice or direction in assisting me correct my lack of knowledge.
I recently purchased a macbook and it came with garageband and frankly I love this program!!
I am having a little trouble though with my vocals, I am using a behringer eurorack (the small one) to phantom power my condenser mic and it's plugged directly into my macbook using the typical rca jack. I seem to be getting sort of some distorted really deep vocals out of this. Like instead of recording my energy it's more drowned out kinda layered below the beat. I am not sure what setting I should use for my mixer and the computer. I keep my lows, mids, and hi's kinda half way up on the mixer, my gain is all the way down and my mic output level is a few notches up maybe four bars or so. On garage band I have the mic volume set up almost as high as it can go. Any idea on how I can try to get my mic to sound as normal as possible? Levels you can recommend perhaps..
Man I owe you guys alot... i'm very appreciative of the help thus far.. Thank you all.

Then we've ruled out the chance that you were still recording with your internal mic (it happens more often than you'd think!)
I would suggest turning up the mids and highs if the tone is too deep. Also you should have your gain as high as you can get it without clipping (i.e. before the signal goes into your computer)

  • Beginner garage band question

I put something together (calling it a song is a stretch) in Garage Band for a function at my daughters school. It's supposed to play continuously for about 40 mins. It's 4 minutes long so I want it to loop 10 times. I did share to itunes and was able to get an mp3 on my ipod What is the best way to make this 4 min garage band song loop for 40 mins and play from a cd? Can I set Garage Band to loop 40 times and export to itunes?

IF, the song can be looped seamlessly, You can use the cycle function to make it loop endlessly. Once you have that going to your satisfaction, download a copy of the freeware Wire Tap, which will allow you to record an almost unlimited amount of time (I think it is only limited by the HD space you have availabel, and yes, you are looking at 400 megs easisy!) from any source on your computer. Make sure the very end of the song goes seamlessly to the beginning. Then, simply hit the record button on Wire Tap, and quickly the play button in GB, and then watch the clock. Stop the Wire Tap recording at 40 minutes, and voila! You have a single 40 minute loop of your song to burn to a CD, with no worrying about iTunes settings at all.

  • Questions about Garage Band

    Hi Everyone
I am new here and want to buy a Mac to use with Garage Band and my home studio. I have never owned a Mac.  I am a 100% Disabled Vietnam vet so I don't have a lot of extra cash. Hoping to spend around $200 or so.
I see many used Mac Laptops on EBay for sale.
What should I look for so that I can use software like Garage Band and music Notation software?
I am doing an interesting project. I am writing an albums worth of songs for the band I am putting together made up of all disabled veterans. I am reaching out to people like Gary Sinise and his Lt. Dan Band who helps many vets. Much of the proceeds of the album sales will go to Veterans Causes
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    Don Parent

I am new here and want to buy a Mac to use with Garage Band and my home studio.
Don, when looking for used macs make sure, you get a Mac with an Intel processor and not a PowerPC.
Check the RAM, the mac has. Some macs have been sold with 2GB of internal RAM, that will never suffice. Try to get a Mac with at least 4GB RAM and the ability to upgrade this.
Older MacBook Pros had a line-in port as well as a line-out. Try to get one of these, and not a model with only one audio port.  A  late 2011 MacBook Pro would be perfect, but will maybe still be too expensive. But try to get a model, that can run the current MacOS X version 10.9.2, so you will be able to buy all software from the Mac AppStore and do not need to search for installer DVDs from third party retail sellers.

  • I want to make a DVD on how to use Garage band and sell them. Do I need apple's permission to do this?

If I want to write a book on how to make great music in Garage Band and sell the book do I need permisison. I also thought about making video tutorials on the same subject. Again do I need permission to do this?

  • Open Garage Band Project in Snow Leopard From Lion

So here's my case..  I have a music student and in order to help him up I setup a project using Garage Band on my machine (OSX 10.7.2) for him to open at his house and his machine so we could keep exchanging the file and make changes, etc etc.
He can't open the project at his house. Using a MBPro with Snow Leopard on it.
I then discovered that he has iLife09 and I use iLife 11
    My questions would be:
Is he not geting it because GB Lion generated files would NOT open in GB Snow leopard? OR Because he is using iLife 09.
If he upgrades to iLife 11 he will be able to open the file?
So, I'm trying to figure out if the issue is related to iLife or to Mac OSX.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Need Music Synthesized from Garage Band 2

Since I know nothing about music, I shouldn't be able to make music with Garage band, correct? I don't even have a manual for it.
Are there people out there who might be able to make some decent music with GB for a video project for a few bucks? Where is the best place to look?

I think the best thing about GarageBand is it allows non-musicians to effectively create listenable and vibrant music with relative ease. Like all the iLife apps, GB is quite intuitive, and once you start playing with it a bit, you'll find a manual is redundant. However, if you like to have the manual, the best bargain (US$8) is undoubtedly a special issue mag put out by "Recording" magazine called "Recording with Apple's Garageband 2: A step-by-step guide." It comes with a tutorial CD as well. This mag fully explains the interface and its usage, gives tips on creating, editing and mixing songs, and gives lots of hints and screenshots.
Other resources are online communities such as this one, macjams.com, and icompositions.com. All these communities have lots of helpful people to answer questions and give tips, collaborate with, or as you suggest, commission.
Like you, I know nothing about music theory and have never taken any kind of music class in school. The only musical instrument I can play is the radio. Yet GB has allowed me to create some worthy music in many different styles.
So I would suggest your presupposition is false. You SHOULD be able to create your own music for your project. All you really need are ears!
    cheers,

  • How do you add non-Garage band instruments into a Logic project so that you can hear them on playback?

How do you add non-Garage band instruments (orchestral instruments) into a Logic Pro (8) project so that you can hear those insrtruments' sounds on playback?  I've tried to understand and follow the Logic Pro 8 User Manual, but the process comes off as so complex and the writing so technical that it does not help but only confuses.
To be precise - I want to add instruments (orchestral) that are not offered in the current Garage band menu which is offered in the Mixer's channel strip menus for Logic Pro 8.  To be clear, the instruments that are offered are Bass / Drum Kits / Guitars / Mallets / Organs / Pianos and Keyboards / Synth Basics / Synth Leads / Synth Pads.  Most of these that I've tried seem to work and give their characteristic sound when placed in a particular channel and playback is clicked.
However - there is one orchestra instrument offered in the standard Logic Pro 8 Mixer channel menu and it's the item labelled "Performance - 000 flute 1 or 001 flute 1."  And it is this instrument that presents a problem. When I click on it and choose it from the menu and enter it as the instrument of choice for a specfic channel / track in my Logic Pro project arrangement, when playing back the music for the overall piece this particular track, the flute, does not playback and produce the notes (Midi events) in the track in the sound of the flute.  Instead, nothing comes out at all.  I can't imagine why this does not work.  Any ideas, anyone? Again, when choosing this instrument for a track and clicking the playback no flute sound is forthcoming.  Why not? I have not tried them all, but when most of the other various types of keyboards, such as an electric piano or an organ, are chosen for a track the playback successfully renders the sound of these instruments.  Why then does playback not produce the sound of the flute when it has clearly been chosen to play and sound the Midi events given it?
Anyway, the overall, larger issue for me is the inability I have to choose and get non-Garageband instruments (largely orchestral) to play the Midi events given on various tracks. If my guess is correct then technically, orchestral instruments not offered in the standard Logic Pro 8 Garageband Mixer channel menu are referred to as external Midi sampled instruments - still, IMHO the process is not clearly spelled out in the User Manual.  The simple step by step process whereby a non-Garage band instrument, say an orchestral instrument, is placed in a channel replete with Midi event (notes) waiting to be played should be easy, logical and given in a simple to follow format, but is not.
What with all the talk of routes, busses, auxillary channels, GM devices, GM mixers, audio bins, libraries and audio files this Logic Pro User is confused to the max.  Can someone please help me and, in simple English, describe the step by step process whereby presumably external sampled orchestral instruments can be successfully employed, in any given Logic Pro arrangement project, to render their characteristic sounds upon playback?
On my two Macs, one a laptop and one a much larger Mac, I have any number of the GSO (Garritan Symphony Orceshtra) and Vienna Symphony Orchestra instrument library samples - and yet - I've yet to figure out how to actually get them INTO a Logic Pro project of any kind!  To put this as a question, even as a humble request, how can I make good use of these orchestral sample libraries in a Logic Pro project?  Can someone steer my to a clear resolution of this issue.  I'd sincerely appreciate it!  Thanks all!

David,  you understand that this is professional software and is not necessarily meant to be easy but is in fact designed to give the professional user as many choices as possible, that's why it's in the Pro Apps section. You WILL need to learn about buses, GM Devices, Audio Bins, Libraries...etc..etc if you intend to use Logic.
That said, you are looking in the wrong place in the channel strip.
      May I offer you advice?
    Go here:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/logicpro/
Open "Exploring Logic Pro"  (a short PDF Document). Pay special attention to chapter 3. Also pay special attention to the included graphics of the channel strips.
I encourage you to read the whole document as it will clear up many things... even though it's a Logic 9 document.

  • I'm Just wondering how to make drum beats in garage band using the sounds it comes with? Also how can i use garage band like a drum machine which i can program an entire song part by part????

I'm new to using Garageband and loops with garage band. I just wanted to see if there was a way for me to use the drum sounds provided in garageband to create my own original drum tracks and work with it like a drum machine that i can program an entire song into... any info or tutorials would be a great help.. Thanks!!!

Ah ok, I have a better idea of what you want to do now.
Unfortunately there isn't anything inside GB that can come anywhere close to Acoustica Beatcraft, but there are two tools inside Garageband that can help you do something similar.
First are the built-in keyboards, which will enable you to trigger drum samples with your computer keyboard or mouse.  Go to Window -> Keyboard or Window -> Musical Typing.  Click with your mouse on the Keyboard or press keys on your computer keyboard with Musical Typing, and you will trigger different drum samples for whatever kit you've chosen for that software track.
Next is the Track Editor: in Piano Roll mode, you can create and see midi notes somewhat similar to the view in this screenshot from AB.  On the left side of the Editor, you will see a sideways piano keyboard.  When you assign a drum kit to a software track, each of the piano keys corresponds to a different instrument: hi hat, snare, bass drum, etc---you'll have to play them using the on-screen keyboard or musical typing to see what they correspond to.   In order to add a MIDI note you hold the CMD button and click with the mouse.
So, if you wanted to add a closed hi-hat hit, you would CMD-click on the Track Editor row corresponding to the closed hi-hat piano key, and then you can drag the MIDI note left & right to change the beat it plays on, or resize the note, which will change its duration.
Or, as you've already observed, you can use Musical Typing to play out a pattern on your computer keyboard while recording, and you will see the midi notes appear in real time in the Track Editor.
Hope this helps, feel free to ask more questions.

  • How to use Session I/0 interface of RIG 3 in garage band

hi I have te ssesioni/0 interface and I want to use it in garage band, but when I
look in system preferences at the input output section and when I select "sessioni/0 it tells me that the interface doesn´t have input controlers !
And when i try to use it in garage band it doesn't work
    please help!

when I have to choose input and output, I choose the sessionI/O option, I´m using a real instrument, an electric guitar gibson sg standard.
I´m not sure about your other two questions, where can I check them to know
if i select the correct option?
but as I said first, I think that the problem is that in system preferences at the input output section it tells me that the interface (Session I/O) doesn´t have input controlers.
