2 questions ocing my e7400 on a p45 neo3-fr
Hey people, maybe someone can help...
So, i´ve been trying to learn about ocing and how PCs work in general. I´ve read tons of material: from intel´s datasheets and thermal specs, to fancy website´s guides, and I still can´t find answers to a couple of question I have.
- The first one, ¿How much stress testing do you, the more experienced front, consider enough in order to label my system as ROCK-SOLID? ¿What percentage of stability would you give me if I ran prime95 (blend mode) for 10 hours + 50 Intel´s BurnTest passes (maximum) + 10 hours OCCT linkpacked in 64bit mode?
- From this forum´s guide, if the FSB is defined as the speed between CPU and RAM, ¿do I have to increase Vdimm if I increase the FSB, even if I manage to maitain the RAM´s speed by changing the FSB/RAM ratio? I mean, I have some Kingston Hyper-x PC-6400 @800Mhz4-4-4-12@2v (ratio 1:1.5) from a FSB@266Mhz and I raised my FSB up to 286Mhz (I know, I such a nub ,but the idea is to get to somewhere near 3.6Ghz=10.5x340FSB), but changed the FSB/RAM ratio to 1:1.25, lowering my RAM to 715mhz (in order to take it out of the equation), without touching Vdimm (or any voltage for that matter). ¿Should I raise Vdimm to achieve the same 800 original Mhz´s? Let´s say, if I pump FSB@300Mhz and set FSB/RAM ratio to 1:1.33? ¿[email protected]? ...now that I wrote it down...that doesn´t sound right. Anyways, the question stands.
- Finally, Is there any information and how-they-work about those more complex options in BIOS? I mean things like "CPU/MCH´s drive clock" (skew I kinda of undestood), "enhance setting for dual channels", "Adjust PCI frequency to 37 or 40 Mhz",and "PCI latency timer to 32, 43, 64, 96 or 128ms?
I´m already thankful for any feedback or redirectioning, and please excuse my bad english. Greetings.
My PC:
E7400 (2,8ghz, 3Mb, 1066FSB, 1.2675v) on a P45 Neo3-FR (PCB1.0, [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected]) with 4Gb=4x1Gb Kingston Hyper-X PC6400@800-4-4-4-12@2v (ratio 1:1.5), Soundblaster X-Fi Gamer, Zotac GTS250 1Gb, ThermalTake ToughPower 600 Watts PFC.
My first succesful run through the above detailed stress tests:
[email protected]=3003Mhz, RAM ratio 1:1.25 (715Mhz4-4-4-12@2v), same voltages, no c-state, no EIST, no dual-channel enhancement, no spread sprectrum, no execute disbit, no nothing.
I´ll be posting my progress towards the 3.6Ghz, but I´ll need help!
hello again,
thanks again to hive, for both replies and the corrections she made to her first one (it was MCH instead of ICH, I knew that ). Very nice person hive, thx.
...And since you are the only one taking interest, I have one more question, ¿Did you have to tweak clock driver and/or skew in BIOS to achieve +400FSB? ah! and ¿during the year in which you worked with [email protected], did your disks experience any corruption at all? Meaning in O.S. or media.
..And about the silly testing : The thing is that I´ve heard and read a lot about stress testing, and there´s always this discussion about how much is enough, and finally (I guess) about the very definition of the word "stable". My conclusions are that it will all finally come to how much maniac-obsessive is there in you. There´s ppl that wants they rigs to be able to work for weeks under synthetic full-loads, and there´s ppl who don´t give a damn if it crashes every 3 days or so, or have to re-install XP every 3 months. Moreover, prime95´s txt´s says that if you don´t pass any of them test, you have a hardware problem, period. That´s emphatic enough to scare me. So I am gonna waste time in testing (risking that at the very end of the month it´s going to take me to find out the limits, I´ll look back and agree with you, in which case it´ll end up posted right here ). I really go hysterical every time I loose 3D-Studio 18hours-long renders or do some pretty tough mission in GTA4 and it goes BSOD on me... those TFT old screens can really take a punch, I´ll tell you that But seriously, if you can just roll your eyes at me and then just tell how you got it stable at 4.2ghz and 1.38v (EIST?c-state? skewing?VTT? MCHv? enhancing? yadda-yadda..) I´ll be even more grateful that I already am.
Finally, regarding the temps, I have 2 thing in favor: Down here it is as much as 10, maybe 15°C cooler that up there, and E7000´s series have a 2°C threshold above E8000´s (74°C). Even further, I used my obsessions to seal tight the tower and manage the air-flow , so it sucks cool air from the low-front and expells it through the back-top end. I really worked on that and now if you drop a small piece of paper into the in-flow at the front, it gets sucked-in and expelled through the back really fast. Intel TestBurn hasn´t gone higher than 60°C at 3003Mhz/1.2675v.
Nice people be well.

P45 Neo3-FR memory problem / questions
Hello all
My old motherboard just died on me so yesterday I upgraded to a P45 Neo3-FR with an Intel E8500. Problem is that I can't get it to boot up with my old memory (4 x 1Gb modules as below). Most of the time the PC doesn't do anything, no screen, no post, but occasionally some weird characters at the top of the screen. I have put in some old DDR2 RAM and the system starts up OK. I bought this board as the MSI spec page says it supports 1066 memory.
Questions,
1) Is there any chance of getting this memory working in the board?
2) If so, how?
3) If not, what should I replace it with?
4) Do I need to touch the 2 jumpers to change the FSB. I left them on default and everything "seems" to be working OK but I guess I should be setting them to 333 for my CPU?
5) I have installed 2 system fans on the MB connectors. The fans are spinning but the speeds are not being reported in the BIOS. Any ideas?
6) Is there a comprehensive setup guide for this board anywhere on this forum? There was an excellent one for my old MSI board and I'm not finding the manual to be much help to be honest.
Thanks very much (in advance) for any help with all this.
P.S. I don-t know what BIOS version the board came with. I will check it when I get home.

I bought this board as the MSI spec page says it supports 1066 memory.
Note that is says "1066* (OC)" on the product page. The Intel P45 Chipset does not natively support DDR2-1066 memory modules.
This is the datasheet for your Corsair Memory modules:
http://www.corsair.com/_datasheets/TWIN2X2048-8500C5DF.pdf
As you can see, these modules are essentially DDR2-800 modules and that DDR2-1066 @2.1-2.2V is an overclocking rating that requires non-standard voltage settings. Those OC Settings are pre-programmed into the SPD Chips of your memory modules via an EPP-Profile which is essentially an overclocking profile which is for NVIDIA Chipset boards, not for Intel Chipset boards. Even if the BIOS is able to notice the DDR2-1066 EPP profile and decides to AUTO-memory frequency to 1066 MHz, it is not able to raise the memory voltage accordingly (it can't, because as I said, EPP Profile Information and settings parameters are for NVIDIA Chipset.)
Do you see now, why your system won't boot?
Try this:
- try one of the factory overclocked Corsair stick alone
If that works, lower memory frequency to DDR2-800 in BIOS and check again, if the system will boot with four sticks (you may have to raise memory voltage slightly.
If that fails, put in one of your DDR2-800 sticks, then set FSB/DRAM Ratio to 1:1, save an exit and then try again with your factory overclocked modules. -
MSI P45 Neo3 FR - E7400 - reoccuring restart issue
I just received new parts to rebuild my PC. It were:
MSI P45 NEO3 FR
Intel E7400
2x2GB A-Data (800) memory
and BQ Dark Power 450W PSU
Unfortunately I have an issue:
After building this (with addition of my old GPU Geforce 7950) I wanted to test it... I run this set into BIOS it worked till CPU temp. reaches around 40C then it gets into restarting loop. It happened each time I made a test. Of course I've tried also with my HD attached to the set with the same result. I've checked the RAM and PSU on my friends PC and it works fine so the next 'suspect' is mobo..
What might be wrong?
My best guess is BIOS - I have A7514 IMS V.1.3
It is old but how to upgrade it when there is such a big risk in restart during process...Quote
I did not installed new Window, at present I don't think it would be possible with hardware going into restart after few minutes at best... But when I attached my harddrive with Win XP on it it runned just more or less for the same amount of time (like in plain bios) before it gets restarted.
Nah you can't just plug in a hd that contain window and other drivers which is mean for another mobo and hope miracle work though some does but in the long run you're bound to run into issue. Not forgetting different mobo are having different chipset, unless you get back the same mobo.
If you doesn't believe me, give it a try and reinstall window from fresh with the mobo driver cd. If you don't have window or are facing licence key issue. Install linux as in ubuntu instead -
MSI P45 Neo3-FR ver2: FSB question
Helli, can you help me please with questions about this mobo. I'm not an expert, so sorry if I'm asking some dumb stuff.
So, I had to change my old motherboard during warranty service. It was Gigabyte GA-P45-DS3LR, so they replaced it by MSI P45 Neo3-FR ver2.
Other hardware:
CPU: Core 2 Dou E 8500
GPU: Gigabyte Radeon HD4850
RAM: Patriot something on 800 MHz
BIOS: 4.5.
So after 1 week of using this mobo I noticed, that some games and software loading longer than before on old mobo, which I used more than a year.
I installed Everest, CPU-Z, and MSI's Dual Core Center just to look at me system... and they show something strange in FSB.
As I know, my CPU should work at 333 (x6/9.5), and in BIOS it shows Current Clock 333x9.5. But all monitoring programs show 332.
Then I went to Dual Core Center -> Motherboard Clock to FSB adjusting. It shows 332 and next line 333, highlighted green (shows that this is default, i suppose). I switched FSB to 333, Dual Core Center start to show 333, but Everest and CPU-Z - 334 (here is screen shots: http://img132.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=332a.jpg ).
Then I switched FSB to - all monitors shows 334. Then I flashed BIOS to 4.4, booted with defaults, settings in BIOS was 333x9.5, but monitoring programs start to show 334. Then I flashed BIOS back to 4.5.
So, can anybody say - this is motherboard issue or something else? On old mobo all was fine, how it suppose to be, in Everest and CPU-Z.
And also, when I enable power saving I have maximum 2 LED lights even at 100% of CPU load - that means 50% of energy consumption?First of all: Uninstall Dual Core Center or make at least sure that it does not automatically start when Windows starts (it has the power to modify the FSB Clock Speed and may be a factor here).
Then: Unplug your PSU from A/C power and >>Clear CMOSe<<. Then load "opitmized Defaults" in BIOS Setup and Disable Spread Spectrum before your save settings and exit.
That may already help.
In any case, smalll deviations from the set clock speed in BIOS or not unusual. They are not really a sign of any damage or defect and they also do not have any functional consequence whatsoever. -
P45 Neo3-FR - Unable to load Vista or Server 2008
I urgently need to get this machine opperational as it's for a developer that's starting tomorrow. Herre's the issue -
1. Whenever i try loading either Vista or Server 2008 (which both use a lot of the same drivers I am told) i cannot get past the first 'Windows is loading files' screen. This did used to just stop at the end of the bar, however with Viat i get the bsod - 0x0000007E - which is a driver problem (from what I've read it's likely to do with the SATA drivers on the MOBO).
2. Never booted up before, so still trying to get teh OS to start. Here's the specs -
Seagate ST3500320AS 500GB Hard Drive SATA II 7200rpm *32MB Cache* - OEM - qty 2 (setup with RAID1)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping (2.4GHz 1066MHz) Socket 775 L2 8MB Cache (2x4MB (4MB per core pair) Retail Boxed Processor
MSI P45 Neo3-FR Socket 775 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
Corsair 4Gb (2x2GB) DDR2 1066MHz/PC2-8500 XMS2 Memory
ASUS HD 3650 256MB DDR3 Dual DVI HDTV out PCI-E Graphics Card
Please help me out here. I was trying to flash the BIOS as it's currently running 1.3, newest is 1.6. I don't have a floppy drive and have been trying to setup a boot disk via my USB flash drive. SO far this hasn't worked.
Is the MOBO just not compatible with this setup, or even the latest OS?
Thanks

WHat the hell is wrong with this stupid MOBO?!?!
At the moment, all this looks like a driver problem, not a hardware problem.

I thought that i had set the RAID drivers up correctly
The board has two controllers which control different SATA ports: Intel ICH10R (6 ports) and JMicron 363 (two SATA port (slightly different color).
The first question is: Which SATA ports are your hard drives connected to?
Each of the two controllers can be set to RAID mode in BIOS independently and for each of the Controllers, different SATA RAID Drivers exist.
- Which drivers did you integrate in the first place?
- Which of the controllers is set to RAID mode?
Quote
I have uplugged one of the HD and set the BIOS to IDE.
Which controller did you set to IDE mode? If the other one is still operating in RAID mode, you will need drivers for that one.
Quote
I can run Vista (SP1 integrated?!) out of the box on my P45 Neo3-FR board, with a SATA drive connected to the ICH10R controller in RAID (prepared) mode, so I don't think you even need a special driver.
Remember: Windows based operating systems are stupid and the generic drivers that Microsoft has provided are pretty much useless (they don't always work). Also, as I already pointed out, it depends which controller is set to RAID mode as well. -
MSI P45 Neo3-FR - Intel P45 still restarting. Again and again

Test the mainboard outside the case on a non-conducting surface in barebone configuration (one stick of RAM, CPU, video card, power connectors, keyboard). Make sure all power connectors are properly connected: 24-Pin ATX, 4/8-Pin +12V CPU, 6-Pin +12V PCI-Express (video card))
If nothing changes, please try a better PSU.
outside the case with one stick of RAM is working. if i put second ram computer restarting again. It means that problem is in RAM? -
P45 Neo3-FR Freezing/lock ups in Windows
Specs:
P45 Neo3-FR using 1.3 BIOS
E8400 w/ Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme
2x1GB GSkill 1066Mhz RAM
EVGA 8800GT 512MB
Cosair HX520W PSU
Antec Nine Hundred case
2x SATA HDD
1x DVDRW
Windows XP SP3
I'm having random freezing/lock ups in Windows. It can happen anywhere between 1 minute to 5+ hours. It's completely random, doesn't matter what I'm doing.
I have the latest chipset and nVidia drivers.
Memtest passes 8+ hours
Orthos passes 3+ hours
I've cleared the CMOS and loaded optimized defaults
I've tried both IDE and AHCI
What happens is everything just freezes, I can't move the mouse and can't ctrl-alt-del.
Anyone have any ideas?
Update: I switched to BIOS 1.2 and so far everything seems OK, though I lost the option to change the command rate on the RAM. I'll post back in a couple of days or if it happens to lock up again.Quote

Need help with MSI P45 Neo3-FR
I haven't been here in a long time. My old board (just replacing it) worked perfectly for almost 4 years after I ironed out the kinks (MSI 865p Neo2-FISR) but I finally decided to upgrade my rig, but here comes the headaches...
I bought the following for my new setup:
MSI P45 Neo3-FR (came with BIOS 1.3 installed)
2GB (2x1) Corsair Dominator 6400C4D
MSI Radeon HD 4850
Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 (I want to overclock it hehe)
Lite-On SATA CD/DVD-RW
Old Hardware being used:
Antec TruPower 550W EPS12 (single rail 36amps on +12)
Cooler Master Centurion (forgot what model) Case
Logitech USB Keyboard
Logitech MX518 USB Mouse
2x120mm fans
2xMaxtor SATA 80GB HDDs (note: NOT SATA II, and I want to run these in RAID 0 off the ICH10R, this is specifically why I bought this board I was going to go with the P43-Neo3 over this, but the inclusion of RAID sold me on it)
1xMaxtor SATA 160GB HDD (note: NOT SATA II)
Aside some trouble I had with the Intel HSF installation was a breeze. Everything is in. I wanted to run everything stock first. Jumped into the BIOS and set the following:
SATA Controller - RAID
DRAM Voltage - 2.1v
Drive Layout:
SATA1 - 80GB Maxtor
SATA2- 80GB Maxtor
SATA7 - Optical Drive
SATA8 - 160GB Maxtor
First power on to get into the BIOS was quick. After setting SATA to RAID, POST will hang at Auto-Detecting ACHI Port 1....then find HDD after about 20-30 seconds. And it will repeat itself for Port 2. So its taking me close to a minute (I might be exagerrating but it sure isn't quick and long enough to irritate me having to keep booting) just to POST and even access the BIOS.
Tried to use my current Windows XP install, got to the Windows XP Splash screen and it rebooted. Tried again, with super long ass POST, again rebooted at the splash screen. Said, fine I'll reinstall XP.
While browsing here I forgot where I read about the SATA and long posts, so I changed my 2x80GBs to SATA3 and SATA4, it no longer takes a minute to POST, goes quick as normal.
Set Optical to boot, go into the Windows XP Install screen, F6 for custom drivers, made a RAID disc using three sources (1. RAID drivers from MSI Website, 2. RAID drivers from MSI CD included with Motherboard, 3. RAID Drivers from Intel website) and each time at a certain point I'd get a BSOD.
Tried again by moving my last HDD/Optical to the ICH10 and disabled the Jmicron. Same, BSOD.
Switched off RAID in the BIOS and set it to IDE. AGain BSOD at XP Install.
Started to think it was a Memory issue, ran Memtest both sticks passed.
One thing I noticed in the BIOS, it has my RAM clocked at 1066. Everything is on auto minus the voltage, but I didn't think it would affect it. So I changed the Ratio from auto to 1:2 (800mhz CPU:800mhz DRAM) but still BSOD everytime I try to install Windows.
This is getting frustrating. I've run out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Quote from: BOSSKILLER on 02-August-08, 22:07:06
Read here how to do it:
>>> Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD<<<
>>> Slipstreamed Windows XP CD Using SP2<<<
Other option is borrow such installation disk from friends.
I moved away from my "friends" and none PC literate, so I'd be better off driving to the store and buying Vista at this point. Haha.
Okay, going to try this...sounds like that project I started a whiles back but got lazy.
Thanks guys, I'll report any results. -
P45 Neo3: Vista64 SP1 does not install with bios 1.4 (did with 1.3)
Today I tried to reinstall Vista 64-bits SP1 and the system repeatedly hangs with an underscore-like blinking cursor when Vista (install) is supposed to boot from the hard disk... (after I've entered all info and Vista has unpacked and copied files to the hard disk)
I think this is weird because the same DVD installed fine about a week ago when I was most probably still using the 1.3 BIOS (I've upgraded to 1.4 recently).
Note that I chose not to enter a key during installation, so it should not be an activation problem (Vista has a 30-day grace period, right?)
Do other P45 Neo3 (MS-7514) owners have the same problem? How did you solve it? (besides downgrading the BIOS - if that's possible at all)Quote
I'm not sure how that would help.
If for some reason there is something wrong with the Master Boot Record of the drive (it happens) repartitioning & reformating the drive should fix that.
A problem with the hard drive's MBR can explain this:

So, can I temporarily safely downgrade to the 1.3 BIOS, or does the flash software only allow upgrades?
You can upgrade/downgrade to whatever BIOS Version you choose with the >>MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<. -

Just helped my son build the following rig:
Antec 1200 case
MSI P45 NEO3-FR v 1.0 main board
Enermax EGX850EWL Power supply (850watt)
+3.3v - 30A
+5v - 30A
+12v - 68A combined (816watts)
Intel E8400 processor
Corsair Dominator (2 x 1gb) PC2 8500 memory
Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 graphics using DVI
Seagate 7200.11 750gb SATA2 hard drive
Sony DVD writer
The power supply was used in a previous rig (AGP / DDR alas) and worked fine. All other components were purchased new.
The rig will not post and the monitor stays in standby. The message of no signal is displayed by the Viewsonic flat panel monitor if it is switched from standby manually.
We have cleared the CMOS several times
We have tried singling the memory (each in turn) in both slots 1 and 3.
We have re-fitted the processor three times
All plugs have been fitted to the graphics card
The 12v four pin plug to the mainboard has been fitted and re-fitted
Removed and re-fitted the mainboard
The processor fan operates normally (as does the graphics card fan) but the processor heat sink stays remarkably cold even ten minutes after switch on, although the northbridge and southbridge heatsinks are slightly warm to the touch.
Have not been able to swap out the memory or try another graphics card. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I've built several rigs for various people using MSI, Intel and AMD and have not had any problems in the past.
Many thanks in anticipation.
Hello,
have you tested the board outside the case on a non-conducting surface in barebone-configuration (CPU, video card, one stick of RAM)? If not, please try that.
Quote
The 12v four pin plug to the mainboard has been fitted and re-fitted
Please make sure the wires of the cable going to that plug are yellow/black. Many times the add-on 4-pin connector for the ATX plug (20+4 pins) is plugged into the CPU connector (which will cause major problems).
Your video card should have one or two on-card power connectors. Are they hooked up to your PSU as well? -
MSI P45 Neo3-FR..Overclocking help please !
Hi i have a MSI P45 Neo3-FR [v1.0] and have managed to update bios to latest version 1.5 i am having trouble finding my way around the bios in order to overclock. Previously i have owned asus boards and it was pretty straightforward but with this board i cannot seem to have full control over all adjustments i think i could adjust fsb and possibly memory ratio and timings but not Vcore and memory voltages as they are greyed out. On the asus boards you got a dropdown list 1.1v~1.8v etc but i cannot get this option with this board.
My memory is corsair [6400] with cpu-z it seems to have timings correct but voltage should be 1.9 my cpu is a E8200 core speed 2673x8 vcore 1.192v i have disabled speedstep [f4] and spread spectrum and the jumpers are set to 266mhz~333mhz.
Any advice on this much appreciated i don't know if there is a tutorial specific to the msi bios advanced settings and how to enable it or a discription of what msi call the voltages adjustments doesn't seem to be v.core...confused!
King regards allThanks for help people i have got a good overclock..well for me I got FSB to 400mhz so my processor was 3.2ghz and memory running at 800mhz with 1:1 ratio and voltage at 1.9.
I did try to go heigher but pc just re-booted 3 times then re-set to optimum i tried a bit more voltage for cpu but it still refused. Funny thing is when i re-did FSB to 400mhz again it booted and ran no bother i checked speed and cpu was again 3.2ghz but ram was 960mhz ... i forgot to re-set ratio back to 1:1 so my ram is running at 1920mhz instead of 1600 testing with prime but i would have thought if its stable i could push cpu further possibly as i know ram can handle a lot more than 800mhz. Is this correct ? -

Blue screens with my new P45 Neo3-FR motherboard
Blue screens with my new P45 Neo3-FR motherboard
I have recently purchased this Motherboard and being trying since few overclocking combinations unsuccessfully
I have a Dual Core E8400 Rev.E0 processor and the best I had so far is 3.6 MHz (400x9) at stock voltage.
I am trying to achieve 450 FSB (450x8.5) stable with memory @900 MHz.
I have increased Vcore to 1.28v and 1.31v, Vram is on 1.9v and I left all other voltage settings on Auto.
Disabled CPU C1E function and & Spread spectrum.
As soon as i raise the clock over 400MHz is when the problem start.
Most of the time is happening when the machine has been left (idle) for a while, I just click anywhere,or just start a programme
and suddenly I get a blue screen and the machine re-boot, and again I run Prime for 3 hours (torture test) and not a single blue screen.
Very weird..
I have 2 MB (2 x 1024) dual corsair memory DDr2 PC6400 XMS2 (5-5-5-18) modules and an ordinary Ati Radeon Powercolor HD 3600 graphic card.
I tried to run both memory stick in single mode and one at the time, but still getting those blue screens.
I have built this system re-using a couple of years old power supply from Hyper (505W).
I need some advice as I am trying to establish which component is to blame.
Could this be caused by the PSU, perhaps malfunctioning or inadequate for this motherboard ?
Also thinking about the memory....memory seems running OK till 960 MHz with processor at 400 x 9 (1:1.20 ratio).
Or perhaps is the Motherboard ?
I have Vista Home Premium Edition OS.
Please advice guys.Hi Guys,
I`ve just updated to Bios v.1.71b
Raised FSB to 445 Mhz and kept multilier to 9x (445 x 9 = 4.005 Ghz)
Vcore to 1.335v
Dram to 1.904v
MCH to 1.304
VTT FSB to 1.34v
ICH still on Auto
Disabled C1E support, Spread spectrum and Intel EIST support.
Set ram to 1:1.00
Tested several times with Super PI & Intel Burn Test and machine is stable so far.
