2-second RAM previews in CS5 64

I've got a pretty basic 1280x720 60fps comp with no real "footage", just motion graphics and a AI file but can only render 2 seconds of RAM preview.
I haven't got an amazing PC but I'm running Windows 7 64bit on 4GB RAM with a Core 2 Quad 2.40GHz processor so I would expect to be able to get more than 2 seconds. I get a lot more than that in CS4.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?
Thanks

"I meant editing the text preferences file (which is something that  power users can do" - I have no idea how to do this. Like I said, it's a fresh installation.
There must be something seriously wrong with my installation. I changed the settings as you suggested and it didn't make any difference to the RAM preview straight away, so I quit and restarted a AE and the setting had changed back to 0. I'm going to try reinstalling and see if that fixes it.
I have a PS CS5 and a couple of trials installed also - are any of the relevant configuation files shared between the software? IE. Will I need to reinstall more than just AE?

  • Only get 1 frame or green background in RAM-Preview AE CS5.5

    Hi All,
I've been working with AE for a few years now, and nothing like this has ever happened to me before:
I have a batch of quicktime videos (.mov)(stats are 1080 @24p) that play just fine outside of AE or Premiere. But when I stick them in and do a RAM-Preview, I get only the audio and 1 frame. If I scroll through the video I may get another frame or 2 if i'm lucky, or a dark green background. I have no idea what could possibly be doing this. And it happens in Premeire Pro CS 5.5 as well.
Stats for my mac are 4 gb of RAM and running OSX Mavricks

Codec is AAC, H.264, 2 Channel Audio, etc.
Opening up a file with VLC gives me 516 streams ( ! ) with
    Stream 0 having Audio | MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a) | Stereo | 48000 Hz
    Stream(s) 1 - 516 having Video | H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10)(avc1) | 1920x1080 | Frame rate of 23.9744...
Some, however, have the (correct) decoding of Planer 4:2:0 YUV, as of which I believe this causes the Purp/Green colors & sometimes dropped frame.
    Edit: (More Info)
Due note that the movies where recorded as AVCHD, then opened into Quicktime and then saved as a .MOV for greater flexibility with different programs.
Would it be worth it to try and find the .MTS files again, and use those?
Or, if they have gone missing, what would I do anyways?
    Thanks.

  • After Effects CS5.5 - Very Serious Performance Issues w/RAM Preview

My system: Windows 7 Professional, two Intel Xeon X5650's, 12GB RAM, and a NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800.
Problem: RAM Preview in CS5.5 gives me less than 2 fps (yes---two frames per second). This is even with the most simple of compositions. I created a 1080p 23.976 project with two simple solid layers and keyframed position and scale values for one of them with no other effects on either solid. RAM Preview gives me 1.8 fps.
I still have AE CS5 installed and it gives me solid, predictable results with RAM Preview. When I create a similar test project inside CS5, it creates the RAM preview almost instantly and displays in proper realtime (23.976 fps).
My settings for both CS5 and CS5.5 are similar  (and I have tried many variations in my attempt to fix this problem).
    PREVIEWS
Fast Previews: Adaptive Resolution Limit 1/4
Enabled OpenGL and both sub-options for OpenGL enabled.
    MEMORY & MULTIPROCESSING
RAM reserved for other apps: 4GB
I have tried various settings for Multiprocessing, all of which results in the same less-than-2 fps RAM Previews. Currently I have MP'ing enabled with 1.5GB allocation per background CPU and the actual CPU's used is 4. Again, no matter what I set it to, I get the same performance issue.
On my screen magnification ratio setting, I am using 25% and my Resolution/Down Sample is set to quarter. On my preview tab, I have tried setting my resolution from the default of "Auto" to "Quarter" with no difference.
In summary: On the same machine, AE CS5.5 RAM Preview offers terrible performance; CS5 RAM Preview offers great performance.

Under AJA Preview there are check boxes, one for "Video" and the other for "Preview." I've checked and unchecked them both and I'm still getting poor RAM previews. No matter what I have toggled, I seem to get between 1 and 2 fps for my RAM Previews.
I am not currently using the AJA card for anything. I will consider uninstalling it if this might possibly solve my problem. It's just a hassle to install and uninstall cards on a per need basis.
If there are any other thoughts, I'd love to hear them. At this point, I'd do just about anything to have realtime previews back.
The machine I'm using, by the way, is an HP z800 with Windows 7 Professional, two Intel Xeon X5650's, 12GB RAM, and a NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800. It has the following installed: CS5.5 Production Premium, AVID Media Composer 5.5.2, and AVID DS 10.5.1 (among other programs).

  • AE CS5 (10.0.1.19) Ram Preview - Audio stops and continue playing randomly

I already reported this issue to Adobe as a BUG but I want to ask here if somebody else have this problem or can confirm it.
Audio breaks/stops and continue playing randomly when 'Ram Previewing'
It happens mostly when the RAM is fully filled up with image cache files! When the Ram is not filled up totally with image cache files it happens rarely!
Steps to reproduce BUG / issue:
    1. create a new composition with a length of for example 5 minutes.
    2. create a new solid with size of 50x50 pixel and animate the position of the solid for a very long time so when ram previewing the whole ram/memory gets filled up with different image cache data (this is very important!). Alternatively you could use a long video file to fill up the RAM completely.
    3. import a wave file .wav 16bit 48khz uncompressed which is very long for example 5 minutes.
    4. insert the wave file in the earlier created composition which contain the animated solid or video file.
    5. Set the work area bar (preview range) for the whole composition.
'Ram Preview' the composition until the whole RAM/memory is filled up with image data.
AE has to stop rendering because there is no more space available in RAM.
make sure 'from current time' checkbox is off.
    6. listen to the audio which stops playing randomly for about 1-2 seconds and comes back and continues playing (***BUG***)
    7. Now set the right handle of the composition work area bar (preview range) to less then the maximum RAM size
(less then the green cache indicator on the right side)
    8. "Purge image caches" or "Purge All"
    9. Ram preview the now smaller work area
    10. listen to the audio. The audio breaks are gone! (***Workaround***)
    Additional information:
I have the latest After Effects CS5 update installed (10.0.1.19)
This behavior is tested with different audio drivers inside After Effects CS5 (After Effects WDM Sound, Generic Low Latency ASIO Driver,  ASIO DirectX Full Duplex Driver)
I also tried different Sample Sizes Buffers (alternatively to the default 2048 samples) but without success.
Reducing the amount of RAM which After Effects can access didn't solve the problem!
    System:
Win7 64bit all latest Updates, 8GB RAM, CPU: intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300, nVidia Quadro FX 2700M, IDT High Definition Audio Driver v6.10.0.6227
There is no driver problem on my system because After Effects CS3 & CS4, Premiere & Soundbooth CS3 CS4 CS5 have no audio problems!
I have lots of other professional audio software like Steinberg Cubase 5.... on the same system and they all work fine.
I also turned off AVG Anitivirus and Windows firewall for testing without success.
AdobeQT32Server.exe, dynamiclinkmanager.exe, PProHeadless.exe, afterfx.exe do not get blocked by firewall they have full permission.
The CS5 Production Premium installation went fine and without errors and antivirus protection was turned off for the installation.
    Any help would be nice!
    Felix

    Yep, I agree with craulmedia....
It's 1 month ago after my initial post and no valuable feedback from Adobe although I filled out the bug report in addition to this post and provide my email for further information.
The only reason for upgrading from CS4 -> CS5 production suite was the use of all my 8GB RAM in AE and now AE can use it but when it's using it the audio have issues.
CS5 is on the market for nearly a year and still have such essential issues... And my fear rises there will be no valuable update fixing these issues but instead Adobe forces me to upgrade later this year to CS6 in hope something change...
I have had support request for different Adobe products in the past including telephone support, web support via Adobe ID... none with success the web support answered my request 3 weeks later with the message they will look into it... time went by and in the end the result was "Yes we know it's a known bug" the bug did not get fixed for that CS version. it even exists in the next major CS release! (talking about EncoreDVD here). Once the web support answered weeks later when I was in holidays and after some days I was not able to respond they closed my case. I reopened the case but never got an answer! Telephone support is nearly waste of time because in 95% of all cases it does not help to reinstall the whole operating system and talking to people who know less about computers in general or Adobe products then my mom - it's a waste of time.
I don't want to blame here anybody for things happend in the past I just want to point out that this time I choose an other support channel (bug report and forum post) but it seems that this support channel is also a waste of time after 1 month with no valueable feedback!
I bumped up this post 2 times and thanks to craulmedia for the third time.
And now here is my fourth time *BUMP*
All I got so far is: "I saw your bug report it's in the queue"
Is it still in the queue? which queue nr. does it have? how long will it take to get any answer? is it reproducible? Is it confirmed as a known bug by Adobe? Is Adobe working on a fix? When will this fix be available? Is the fix provided in form of an update or in the next major release?
OK, I know this is a user to user forum and Adobe people only stop by in their free time and there is no guarantee for any real support.
But it started out so good in the first time...
Last 2 things I want to add here:
    1. Why should I provide my email in the bug report? Sure so Adobe can get back to me for further information... but wouldn't it be nice if Adobe would be so kind to give some status report to that given email as a small present for the enthusiastic beta testers ?
    2. please Adobe take a look at www.uservoice.com already Autodesk started to move there with 3ds Max.

  • How to get RAM Preview in PP CS5?

Hello, I'm recently trying out premiere, and the biggest thing that is bothering me right now is that I can't find the RAM preview. I don't have the required graphics card to get the Mercury Playback Engine, but I would at least expect to be able to build a RAM preview to playback part of my timeline smoothly. I am new to premiere, but I remember using After Effects CS4 last year, and there was a way to build a RAM preview so I could watch certain parts of my video without it being choppy. Right now all I get it choppy playback and I can't view my work.
Also, is there a way to lower the preview screen resolution in order to get faster RAM preview. Just like After Effects has 'Full' 'Half' 'Third' etc. I would really appreciate some help, thanks a lot!

I wouldn't mind doing the rendering, but it seems that it's rending the whole 1080p uncompressed video when I do that which is why it's taking so long. Is there a way to change the render settings to let's say 640x480 or lower? That way I can just get a quick simple low resolution render? Also, I tried changing the resolution of the preview screen, but it won't let me go lower than 1/4. Any reason for that?
Thanks again for all your help. I'm still mad that there's no RAM preview.

I'm still new to CS5 so still learning it but you can change your render bar at the top of your time line.  Just grab one end and slide it toward the center to make it smaller then grab the center of it (a fist will appear as you cursor) and slide the whole bar over the area you want to render.  Doing that will allow you to render any one or two second section of your time line by just hitting the Enter key.  I know that's not what you're looking for but that's all I know at this time and it will help you  a little.

Sorry, but I tried to fix the Quote that I included and just made it  worse.  Gotta figure that out too.

  • After effects slow ram preview hold for 4 seconds before starting

Hi I have upgraded from After effects CS5.5 to CC 2014 , and I notices that when I want to make Ram view by hitting 0 num pad key , it pauses for 3 or 4 seconds before it start caching , and it become really annoying if you want to ram preview every 1 min , I tried playing around with the Preferences /Memory/ Ram reserved for other apps , but no good .
That was not the case in CS 5.5 , is it was starting caching as soon as I hit the 0 key .
I am working on Mac pro workstation , quad core intel xieon 2x 3.2 Ghz Mac Os 10.7.5
    Thanks

I am guessing that you have MP rendering turned on in the preferences. Please turn it off and test again.

  • I have no audio when I ram preview or after rendering in CS5.5

I have read all the solutions in other threads but with no avail, I'm still stuck with no audio. I had no problem like this before in CS3 and I'm currently using/learning CS5.5. I've had no audio at all. However, I can hear audio when I click on the layer that has my mp3 file on their by pressing 0 on the number keypad. But when I go on my main comp I can't hear any audio whatsoever when I press the space bar or when I press the RAM preview button. There is no audio even after I render it and yes, I did click on the audio check box in the audio module that has the lossless link to make sure it is on.

    The flaw is here:
    my mp3 file
Convert it to a WAV or AIFF. Nobody knows what can hapopen with MP3 and AE sucks at using those files even today.

  • After Effects CS5 crash on RAM Preview OS X

Hello Friends. I've had a pretty great experience with AE CS5 so far, but I've been getting more and more recurring issues of AE locking up the entire computer on occasional RAM Previews. I get a spinning wheel, and the computer becomes unusable. I can usually change open applications with the keyboard, but they do not respond. In moments even that stops working and have a beach ball of death. Unable to force quit in any way, wether through menus, contextual menus, or keyboard commands. It takes a hard shutdown with the power button to get out.
The only thing I can find that *may* also be a connection is that I normally always save right before a RAM preview. Though it doesn't happen every time, could it be that I'm freaking out the app before it can fully write the changes to the saved file? Each time it happens, I do have a sense that I'm working too quickly and am waiting for it to catch up.
Not sure if anyone else has experienced it. Just wanted to let people know I've run into it more than a few times.

Thanks for the reply. I've been getting fewer problems by simply pacing myself before I RAM preview, but they have not entirely gone away. Here are my settings as of now.

  • Super slow audio RAM preview issues in AE CS5

    Hi all,
I've been having a tough time previewing audio while working in AfterEffects. I'm using Version 10.0.2.4, running on a 2x2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro with 64 gigs of memory.
I've opened up projects that have never given me any issues in the past and I seem to be experiencing the same issue, over and over again:
When I try to preview a comp with audio (either hitting "0" on the keypad, or "." on the keypad), I get the "spinning beach ball" for at least 20-30 seconds before the audio kicks in. When I disable audio in my preview window, I have no delay with the RAM preview.
This happens with .aiffs and .wav files.
I've done the usual tricks -- restarting my machine, double checking to make sure there's not an issue with my speaker setup, repairing permissions, checking for updates.
Has anyone else experienced these issues, and is there a workaround? I have a job coming up that requires me to quickly preview audio and waiting 30 seconds every time I need to check my progress with a RAM preview is going to be soul-crushing.
I'll happily answer any questions -- I'm sure there's a bunch of info I've left out, and fingers crossed it's just some setting that I've ignored that's causing this issue.
    Thanks,
    Dan

Sorry for all the questions, but...
What path/hardware does your audio take to be output?  Analog from the Mac?  Via a third party card like an AJA or Blackmagic device?  USB speakers?
Have you specified the audio device in the AE audio hardware preferences?  Have you tried outputting to a different device, or removing the device and just using the standard system audio?

After Effects CS5 was working just fine less than 24 hrs ago.
Now I cant even get it to RAM preview some text moving across the screen as a test.
It keeps getting hung up on "Background Process Status Loading Projects..."
Never an issue before. Didnt update or change ANYTHING.
Of course this happens right in the middle of a job...nice....

    Funny you said that.
That is what i thought the problem might be. I am going to archive some stuff on my hard drive.
That is when the app started having issues. When the project started getting larger and having more elements.
In fact, now i am getting a weird wobble when I render a sequence from premiere. If I only render part of it, it doesnt happen.
Maybe I need to free up some space on my hard drive...?

  • Ram Preview Needs 2 or more frames AE CS5.5 Windows

Hey Guys I've been having this issue for a month now. I've been on most of the forums with no solutions.
I am trying to play my compositions in AE( Version 10.50.253)  with ram preview and i've been getting the following error.
My Work area is extended for the duration of the timeline and the sequence is 1:02secs.
The footage that is being used is all text(Credit Sequence) with no video, stills etc.
However I have tried compostions with different media with the same results.
I currently have 32gigs of ram all of which is allocated to After Effects and I've also tried different combimations with the same results.
Lastly I tried importing footage (.Mov with a PNG wrapper and I've gotten this error).
I've have Quicktime Pro installed with the pro res encoder...
Can someone please help, after reading all the forum notes on this problem nothing seems to work.

In addition to Mylenium's advice, I see two troubling settings in your screen shots:
    1) Your comp is set to 24 frames/sec.  Except for very sophisticated HD cameras -- typically coming with price tags rivaling those of brand-new Corvettes -- the proper frame rate is ALMOST NEVER 24 frames/sec, but 23.976 fps.  That fractional difference really does count.  We don't know a thing about your workflow or other footage you use, but I have five whole American Dollars that say you have the wrong frame rate.
    2) Here's something that's COMPLETELY wrong: your memory settings.  You've allocated all your RAM to AE, and have left nothing for tiny little considerations like the operating system and any applications that need to remain open.  Thus, you're strangling your machine.  You ought to look carefully at this page:

  • AE CS5.5 ram preview locking up system

Just doing a simple ram preview on a video clip in AE CS5.5 is causing the system to lock up. It can get a few frames done but eventually just locks up and requires the reset button to reboot the computer. It's only doing this when the system is overclocked. If I reset the overclock in bios and try ram preview on the same clip same everything in AE CS5.5 it doesn't lock up the system.
So I've tried a lot of different overclock settings to try and identify what's causing it but I haven't been successful in finding a solution there. The overclock I was originally running ran Prime95 with no errors for 8 hrs and had no issues with Linx. With the different overclock settings I've tried I ran them against Linx @ 20 times without errors. Also tried reinstalling AE CS5.5 a few times cleaning it out between installs.
Here's why I'm asking on here. What out of the things changed between AE CS5 and AE CS5.5 could be causing this? Because AE CS5 has no problems at all running ram preview while the system is overclocked. I mean what's AE CS5.5 doing that kills my system when Linx and Prime95 can't
    Any input would be appreciated.

The likelihood that you'll find an answer is about the same as the likelihood that someone browsing this forum with a similar machine being pushed over its' design specs would have sufficient knowledge of the inner workings of the code that controls the data to memory path to give you a solution. It's obvious to me that when you're over clocking your CPU that some memory path is missing or loosing enough of the instructions to send the machine into an endless loop.
It also sounds to me like you have a workable solution. Don't jack up the processor speed. I can't imagine that the performance increase outweighs the time lost with a machine that isn't reliable.

  • CS5 RAM preview is slow if I do other things while it's building

    Good morning!
    I'm experiencing a strange issue.  1080/29.97 comp on an 8-core w/ 16GB.  Multi-proc rendering is off.
If I RAM preview the comp (800 frames or so) and wait while AE builds the RAM preview, it plays back fine & at speed.
If I start the RAM preview, then go work in Photoshop while it's building, then return to AE and attempt to play it down, I have the green bar like a normal RAM preview, but it plays very slowly -- almost as if it's re-rendering every frame (actually slower than if I just hit spacebar to render&play on the fly).. maybe 1fps.  If I stop and play those frames that it's slogged through, they then play normally.
Is it possible that RAM previewing while I'm using another app (e.g., Photoshop) is resulting in the frames being written to swap disk or elsewhere so that they're being re-read into RAM when I actually try to play it?  Disk caching is disabled in the AE Prefs, but...?
Thanks in advance for any ideas -- very annoying.

    > Is it possible that RAM previewing while I'm using another app (e.g.,
Photoshop) is resulting in the frames being written to swap disk or
elsewhere so that they're being re-read into RAM when I actually try to
    play it?
    Yes. That is possible.
Be sure that you're reserving enough RAM for other applications.

  • Can't do ram preview, but why?

    Hello,
I've been asking this question allready in several forums. I got a problem with ram preview in After Effects.
    My PC system:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
    Mainboard/Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-870A-UD3
Graphic Card: Gainward GTX 460 GS 2048MB GDDR5
    HDD: WD 500MB
    Ram: 12GB SO-DIMM DDR3 A-Data Value 1333 CL9
    Windows 7
    After Effects CS5
Now when I want to do a ram preview it gives me only about 1,5 seconds, then it stops rendering. Enabling the multicore function will lead to an error message: "Not enough ram installed". When I click on "Details" in pre-settings window in AE, it tells me:
    Installed ram: 12GB
    Current Ram usage: 0,31 GB
    Permissible Ram usage: 0,4 GB
    Max. usable memory: 12 GB
    Max. allowed memory: 0,4 GB
    Minimum required memory: 0,4 GB
Isn't this weird? It seems like AE is not checking that there is 12 GB installed.
PS: In the settings I have set "Ram reserved to other applications" to 1 and "Ram available for AE" to 11.

    I have win7 64bit.
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CS5\  and all the files are actually in \Support Files\
I've found some talk online about the problem being tied to the Dynamic Link processor. But I have allowed my Dynamic Link manager through my firewall and nothing has happened for me. I've uninstalled AE and had no luck either. I reinstalled it and the problem was still there. I re-installed the latest patch and still nothing. Oddly, I have noticed the Premiere lists my RAM for other programs at 0 now too. I had previously set that to 3GB.
Are there other .dlls I need to permit through the firewall?
