2 short 1 long beep on startup, posting

Hi, i'm using the H61M-E33 motherboard with the i5 2500 processor, 2 x 2GB DDR3 Corsair XMS3 1333mhz sticks of RAM.
i've tried reseating the RAM and each of the RAM sticks by themselves and also tried a friends RAM which also didn't work every time i get the same beep codes on startup.
it is giving us a warning saying the monitor signal is out of range when we startup though, we're connecting VGA-VGA as we don't currently have a functional adapter.
Any Ideas?
Edit: we've put the graphics card in and now we've got windows installing, still not sure what the beeps mean though.
Edit: we had a dodgy DVI adapter with a bent pin which was preventing the signal to the monitor, the beeps we still don't know what they are but the system seems to be running fine, perhaps MSI just decided to put this sound on there to confuse people.

I really don't know why so many people make such a big issue over the USB beeps. Unless you're shutting down and restarting your PC every two minutes, they're hardly noticeable.
No big problem at all so long as you know what going on and if like myself and others new to MSI boards as well as putting a pc together I think you tend to be a little over sensitive to all the bleeps.
As for disconnecting the speaker, same answer as above.  But it''s there for a reason and I think most people push the button and wait for the post beep almost crack a little smile and get on with what your doing. Sad? possibly but hey!

  • Fail to boot (short-short-short-long beep code) after M92p BIOS Update

    Hi,
I recently updated my BIOS to the latest version using the System Update tool from Lenovo. For a while everything seemed to be working alright, as the BIOS was dowloaded and the computer rebooted. After rebooting the first time i was presented with the BIOS utility, and noticed that the update was progressing.
After 20 or so seconds the computer rebooted again. This is where my problems began. The computer immediately started beeping this short-short-short-long melody from the speakers. I thought this was normal, so I left the computer on for quite a while.
However, the beeping never stopped. Now the beeping resumed the instant i plug the power back in. I have yet been able to actually getting any sort of information on-screen telling me what's wrong.
I've tried following the "Recovering from a POST/BIOS update failure" on page 267 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual, but no luck with that so far. No matter where I place the jumper, the beeping code is the same short-short-short-long melody (yeah, it sounds like a disney tune or something).
Any bright ideas? The machine type is a M92p 2992-B3G
I'd hate to have to send it in for repairs, and Lenovo's Norwegian support line doesn't open until Monday, and there seems to be no way to call their 800-number in the states from here
Oh, and would this be covered by my warranty if repairs / motherboard replacement is the only way out?
    UPDATE #1:
    I found this in the manual;
3 short beeps and then 1 long beep DRAM memory
    error
Perform the following actions in order.
    1. Make sure the memory module(s) are properly seated
    in the connector(s).
    2. Replace the memory module(s).
    3. Replace the system board.
This is pretty much Lenovo's way of saying "You're screwed", isn't it?
    UPDATE #2:
    I've now tried pretty much everything;
The solution as proposed on page 267 in the Hardware Maintenance Manual
Unplugging all cables and harddrives before booting
Removing my PCIe video card and PCI Wireless NIC before booting
Removing all memory modules, and trying 1 and 1 module
Moved a memory module from another machine that I know is working
    No luck so far.
Ideas would be welcome at this point

I'm glad to hear it's just a simple memory error, however the original problem in this post is a bit more than just a memory problem.
This became a problem after a BIOS update, so somewhere along the way one of Lenovo's developer screwed up badly, and it's been bugging me ever since. There's absolutely no way for me to use any PCI-e card with my M92p.
I've tried 6 different cards, 3-4 different memory module combinaties, with our without harddrives plugged in, and every thinkable combination of these.
No luck. Therefore, I simply conclude that Lenovo are dicks, and we all know what dicks enjoy doing; **bleep**ing people over.
I've given up on the issue, and I'll never buy a Lenovo again after this.

  • Mac Pro early 2008 power off suddenly alone and gives a long beep on startup

Hello everyone! Can you resolve the problem reported? I have 6 equipaments identical to those with the same problem, some worse than others, and only two barely functioning, others are stopped. They power normally and suddenly alone they power off , and after that I only can power on again , after hours waiting or only the next day , and when it's power on , on startup , they give me a long beep , before the chime , then I can work for a time (minutes or long time , it's not secure)
I talked with Apple Computer (from USA) and they do not assume that the problem exists and that many users have the same problem, worldwide.
If you're not satisfied with the result of Apple, we will have to press them to assume the defect and promote a recall on these equipments. We have many users with the same issue (MacPro off alone)

All places where I have my equipments (they are in 4 different places, but I have tested them in all four locations), are electrically grounded, the electrical networkstabilized, reviewed annually and I use UPS minimum of 1.5 KVA (I have two UPS of 3.75 KVA) . I tested with the original HDD , with all the applications that I use installed , only with the system installed and the same procedure on a new HDD and got the same result . So , it is not eletrical problem . I have iMacs , MacBooks , G5 and MacPro early 2009 working in the same places with no problems . I tested all the sites with three different electricians and all
approved my Electric networks . As I know, all Apple equipment have
surge protection, precisely to prevent thecomponents from being damaged
by electrical problems. Again , it is not eletrical problem .

  • Macbook Aluminium.  Single, long beep upon startup and update to Snow Leopard wont work.

Hi, I recently formatted my late-2008 Macbook and installed Ubuntu.  It didn't work so I formatted again and installed Leopard.  When I boot I get a single long beep.  When I try to update to Snow Leopard and reboot the OS still shows up as 10.5 (Leopard).
It seems to function normally besides all this.  I have not touched the memory in this time and the OS recognises the full 4GB I have inside.  I also did not touch the hardware, this whole problem seems to have been caused by my attempt to install Ubuntu.
    Any help out there?
    Thanks guys.

I have exactly the same problem for some days because I installed Ubuntu 11.04. Thanks God I found a way to fix it:

  • Satellite 4030cds beeps on startup (POST codes)

Hi does anyone have a list of POST codes...I think I have
1 long 4 short followed by 1 long 3 short.
    Does that make sese.
    Thanks.
    John.

    Hello John
Unfortunately there is no public document about that. If you are not able to start the unit or even enter BIOS settings there is some hardware malfunction. The unit should be checked by technicians who can read the codes and locate the a defective hardware component.

  • Dx2300, beep on startup

I bought a DX2300 microtower used. It worked beautifully at the sellers house. We removed the wires/cables and I took it home. When I reassembled everything I got no action on the monitors(dual), no lghts on the wireless keyboard nor mouse. The CPU makes a single, long beeping on startup. The only thing I did to it was clean out the dust from the front vents and fan units. I believe the seller had a 1T byte external harddrive, but other than that, II believe it's all the same. Any suggestions?
    This question was solved.

I went inside and unplugged and reset each cable I could. It started up smooth and other than the black screen telling me it hadn't been shup down correctly - all works fine. I was able to get my wireless internet set up. All is well in my world. Thank you very much for the help.

On startup, I hear 3 short beeps followed by 3 long beeps followed by 3 short beeps, then nothing. Screen remains black the whole time. Tried to boot holding down option key - nothing. 2010 MacBookPro running Snow Leopard. Any suggestions?

  • Long Beep tone at startup - Unable to select boot partition

Recently I was running a software update on an old G4 which had been working perfectly. When the system restarted it made a long beep tone then the usual bong. The system hung at the "starting login window" stage.
The beep is not a bad RAM beep, that one is short. This is a long beep like one you get when you update firmware.
Tried taking out and reseating the RAM but that did nothing.
After booting into OF a couple of times, doing "Reset All", Zapping PRAM etc. we still the get tone at startup only now we just get the white OF screen. It no longer tries to boot into OSX unless we type "Mac Boot", in which case it hangs at the login window again.
I attached an external drive with two partions, one with 10.3.9 and another with 10.4. Both will boot successfully on my old Pismo and my PB G4. When the OF screen came up I typed Mac Boot and held down the Option key. The blue screen came up and first boot partition was displayed, but the machine sat there and spun forwever searching for the others. I figured it was stuck on the internal drive so I disconnected the ribbon cable and tried again. This time both partions on the external drive are available, Yae! However when I go to select either one and click on the right arrow nothing happens. The selection seems to bounce back to the first partition. And through all of this the long beep tone is there at startup.
So thats the stage we are at. If anyone can shed some light on this situation we would be most appreciative. What is causing the tone? How can I fix it?
Why doesnt the system accept the boot drive selection?
    Mike

    Hi Petra,
It was one of the recent security updates for 10.3.9 along with Quicktime, iTunes etc. I couldn't tell you exactly which ones as its been a few weeks since the original event. However I can say that I had already done the recommended firmware update for that machine several months before the crash.

  • RAM Failure? (3 Short Beeps, 3 Long Beeps, 3 Short Beeps)

Anyone have any idea what 3 Short Beeps, 3 Long Beeps, and 3 Short beeps when starting the computer mean? I heard it might be RAM failure? Could that be the case? How much has it been in the past? Computer's a Late 2010 13" Macbook Air with the Core 2 Duo. Thanks.

  • 3 short beeps, 1 long beep???

    as the title says really?
turn machine on, it beeps, 3 short 1 long.
    removed ram, still the same.
tried new ram still the same?
    any ideas???

Usually power-on beeps indicate a problem with RAM or the RAM slots on the motherboard. However, there doesn't appear to be a 3 short, 1 long beep sequence indicated. Any chance you tried a firmware update recently that did not complete properly? If so check the accompanying documentation with the update to see if that beep sequence is related. Otherwise take the computer to an Apple service center for diagnosis or run the hardware diagnostics:
Insert the OS X installer disc that came with the computer into the optical drive and restart the computer. After chime press and hold down the 'D' key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run extended diagnostics.
Obviously, if the problem is failure of the POST tests, then the computer will not boot from the DVD.

  • H57M-ED65 with i5 cpu - added HD and now we get 1 long beep and 2 short beeps

So a friend of mine has a MSI H57M-ED65 that he added a 2 terabyte sata drive too.  Everything has worked perfect with this board for about 3 years.  they turn it on and now it gives a beep of 1 long beep and 2 short beeps. No Video.  Now I have seen the beep codes but it doesnt add up.  I have removed everything and reseated.  They do not use the onboard video, if I remove all the memory and power it on the board recognizes the fact no memory is there and gives the correct codes.  I have checked all connections but the only thing online I see is it says possible video problem.   Doesnt really add up and I checked the few connections that had been un plugged and everything is correct.
Has anyone ever seen this problem after putting in a drive?  Oh yea also I have unplugged the dvd and hd's and still get the beeps.  If its still video issue I am going to assume it has to do with the onboard video cards because with out the other card installed it still gives errors.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Extra 1GB RAM causes 1 long beep and 8 short beeps.

This is my first post, and I am having problems installing the maximum 3GBRAM on my KT4AV L mobo. I bought 3 1BB sticks from crucial, all PC2700. Each stick is ok. The first two work with a 512MB stick in the 3rd slot, but when I try to add my 3rd GB stick the computer cant get past the 1 long beep and 8 short beeps. I have tried adjusting the voltage to 2.7, (didnt try 2.8, as someone in another thread thought it might be unwise for life of RAM.)
Is there a solution to this? havent updated my BIOS, but I am nervous about doing this because I have heard it can mess everything up. Any advice will be welcome.

Well, I can't guarantee the whole amount of RAM will fit. It ought to, but that is all I can say. Grayone is saying this as well as I but shorter.
I have two more reasons for wanting you to get another PSU:
    - This is not particulartly quiet, 26dB idle is nothing to shout about. http://www.qtec.info/products/product.htm?artnr=14321&specs=1 (Please note the little word "peak" - that is not the same as "max".
    - I speculate in that you think you need this much memory because your system isn't working up to the level of the in-built parts. The PSU has hindered efficient use.
How much would you like to spend?
    Prices are for comparison only!
The Tagan 480W seems to be 1000 Sw kr.
"My" Zalman is about the same.
Antec is a very good, quiet and reliable brand, and I'd say more powerful and feature-rich than both the Tagan and Zalman - for that money you'd get: http://www.antec.com/specs/true480_spe_EU.html and for half of it you might get this: http://www.antec.com/ec/productDetails.php?ProdID=07483
Hiper and Sirtec/Chieftec and Seasonic are other good brands - Sirtec I'v got in one system and that is running very good and quiet.

Please see this HP document entitled "Computer Does Not Start and Emits an LED or Beep Code". • 2 Short beeps on Startup

I have an MSI P45 NEO Mobo. When it starts it gives 2 short beeps close together and not 1 long post beep as I am used to hearing on other systems I have had. Is this normal??
I have checked my RAM and video card and all seems well. I am also having CPU overheating problems which is the subject of another thread and I am following up the sugestions made there. Is there any possibility that the 2 issues could be related??
Can you provide me any advice on the start up beeps.
    thanks and regards
    Terry

    HU16E thanks for your reply.
Yes I do have 2 USB devices connected - keyboard and mouse.
I do not otherwise get a POST beep. Is what is happening on my PC normal?? or shouls i get the long single beep to indicate POST is OK??
    thanks
