2 sided brochure in InDesign

Novice Question ... If the outside of a brochure is the return address and where you would put your address label, would you back the inside up head to head or head to foot? My problem is wanting to make sure when it is tri-folded the open ends where they would tab it is at the top and the folded part is at the bottom.

I thought Bob's answer would handle that.

Most brochures are Portrait reading. Head to head such that when you unfold everything is right reading as the panels open. If the opened interior is landscape plenty of discussions arise as to which way to rotate; there is no definitive answer.
You might have the outer back panel rotated 90 degrees for address info. The post office would want the tabs at the top when reading, folded edge to the bottom.

Printing double sided brochures with InDesign

I'm trying to print my brochures double sided with InDesign but I'm really having a devil of a time doing it. The brochure is 8 pages long (each page is 5.5 x8.5 therefore two double-sided 8x11s).
The problem is that my printer does NOT print duplex, so I can't just leave it in there and let the printer do it.
I had hoped that I could print pages 1 & 8, then stick those pages into the printer upside down and print 2/7 on the other side.
Then i could repeat it for 3/6 and 4/5, but when I print out 1 & 8, it prints them on separate pages.
Anyone know who to format it so that I can print one piece of paper (with two pages on it) at one time?

File > Print Booklet
Booklet Type > 2 up Saddle Stitch
From that Print Booklet dialog, click the Print Settings button (bottom the the Print Booklet dialog) and modify the Print dialog- you will probably have to select Orientation rotate.
Select ok from the Print dialog, returning to the Print Booklet dialog.
In short, you jump between two dialog boxes, until the preview looks correct in Print Booklet. I would suggest setting the printer to Adobe PDF and printing from Acrobat.

One really useful tool I've used (and still do) for learning InDesign (and lots of other stuff) is to search Google with a concise question and the word InDesign in it. You may get more than you want, need, or can deal with, but you'll be seeing responses from this forum's posts and other Adobe.com resources, as well as from lots of other non-Adobe sources "out there."

Using pages to create a two-sided brochure and second page prints upside down!

When using a pages template to create a two-sided brochure, the second page needs to be reversed (upside down) for correct printing when emailing to an outside printer sources. How do I reverse the page within the pages app?

IF you are using a printer with 2-sided printing, in the expanded print dialog you will have a selection for long-edge binding OR short-edge binding. Whichever setting you have set, switch to the other one.

Double sided card in Indesign

Hi,
I have a problem with creating some double sided cards in Indesign and I was hoping that someone can help me please?
I have to create double sided cards in Indesign, so each side of the card has a border and crop marks in the exact same place. Each side is also a separate pdf file.(a front pdf and a back pdf). I cannot make these as a single pdf and print because the printing is on card, which is on the bypass try of the printer.
I need to print this double sided and then chop the edges off using the crop marks as guides. I have tried printing these files - so I place the card on the bypass tray and print the front, then place the card back on the bypass tray and print the back - in the exact same place. But when I print this, one side of the card always prints to the side - meaning the crop marks are misaligned for chopping.
I'm wondeing if there is anything I need to do in Indesign rather than the printer to print so that the crop marks on the same place on either side of the card.
Any help would be appreciated,

As Bob says, desktop printers, and even commercial copiers generally don't have the kind of precision for sheet-to-sheet and front to back registration accuracy.
Avoid borders closer than about .25 inches to the trim line unless you plan to cut each card by hand. Even the fronts won't be perfectly aligned to each other in the stack so you need to allow for some drift in the design. The further you keep anything from the edge that will lead the eye to see a mis-alignment the less likely anyone is to notice. A hard, narrow border is not a good choice for this sort of output.
Leave the border off the back completely if you can, and allow as much margin as possible to hide the shift there, too, and trim for the front side as that is presumably the most important.

I used a Photoshop file as my background for a brochure in InDesign CS6 and when I print it thru either InDesign or via exporting it as a pdf it always has a white border. How can I eliminate this? I was on the phone with a tech for an hour and fifteen minutes. The answer I was given is that InDesign places white borders automatically. Need help, the white borders do not coincide with a mostly black background.

I am not certain you understood the technical support person from wherever you shought help.
ID will simply output what you tell it to. If you have designed a brochure that has a bleed and your PS file extends into the bleed, and you output a PDF with the correct settings, and send it to a service bureau (not certain about instyprint) that can print that size with bleeds, then trim it to size...phew. Seems like a run-on sentance there.
As for printing to the edge of a piece of paper on a local printer that supports it, you need to set up the printer to do so. At least that's how it has worked with the borderless printers I have used.
If you need an inexpensive brochure printed, try Quantum Digital. As long as you design it to their specs, it is a quick turn, the printing is fine for most inexpensive jobs, and they are pretty inexpensive. Offset quality they are not.
But your file better be constructed properly.

With the CC you can download different ME versions to add their functionality.

AXT fonts don't work well in new versions of InDesign. Your best bet would be to replace the font with a Unicode compliant OpenType font. I believe there are a few Arabic fonts that are included with InDesign that would work.

Printing a two-sided brochure

When I printed a two-sided brochure with the former Pages, I would select options Two-Sided and Short-Edge Binding and the text would print correctly. With the new Pages there isn't and option for borders when printing so the text prints correctly on the first page but the text is upside down on the second side. How do I fix this?

Wait for it to dry, then flip it, a good idea anyway, unless you like your work smudged and ripped.
or, what you should have done, print single sided, then single sided again for the 2nd side.
Inkjets are such slow, expensive, bad ideas. I don't know why people are so attached to them, except they appear cheap when you first buy them.

Two sided masterpages in InDesign

I am designing personalized mailers for a client that needs to be double sided. How can I create a master page for both the front and the back of the mailer in InDesign 5 or 6 so if I safe the pdf my file would consist of the front and back pages collated e.g. Front1, Back1, Front2, Back2, etc.? I need to supply the pdf collated to the printers and there are about 2000 different names with both a front and a back. I do not have the time to make to merge the two different file together in one pdf so that the front and the back of the mailer would be together in the pdf file.
Are there a faster way to merge such files in AcrobatPro without manually moving the pages to the correct position?

Start off by creating a 2 page document with facing pages. Use a 2 page master. Position your variable placeholders on the master pages, left for the back of mailer, right for the front of mailer. When you create the merged document, it will create a multi page document of front, back, front, back, etc. If the pages have bleed, there are a few things you can do to accommodate this situation.

Creating a six sided concertina in indesign

Hi there. I would like to get some help with a concertina that I am creating. I am creating a six sided concertina and want to know how i go about showing the folds of the concentina to the printers, without adding back lines that will be printed. I have added black lines to where I want the folds, and have added them in a new layer, calling this layer; folds, do not print, and have double clicked on the layer and deselcted print layer. I have then clicked on the non printing tick box uner attributes for each of the line folds. Is this correct?

For something like this I would add a Slug area top and bottom, and put fold lines (clearly labelled) in the slug area, but not across the actual page (unless you need die lines for scoring), and I would both make them printable and include the slug area in the PDF export.
If you need real die lines, they should be on a separate layer as you've done, but they need to be printable, and in a spot color (name it DieLines or something useful and make it an obvious color like magenta or red that contrasts withthe document), and they need to be set to overprint so they don't leave any unwanted gaps in the art.

Hi Ira,
Welcome to the Forum.
There is nothing to set. The page is printed horizontally. All you need to do is print one side then feed it back into your printer face down (opposite to what you had). Then print the second page.
You need to test exactly how this works on your printer, by drawing a mark at the bottom edge of the paper as you see it in the printer tray, then noticing wheer that mark shows up relative to the print.

Creating a double sided flag in indesign - flipping image problems

Hi there - struggling to flip an image in idesign
I want to create flags, which when printed will be on sticky paper and stuck to cocktail sticks to make mini flag poles to put in the drinks
however when I flip the flag image (see example http://www.flags.net/BVIS.htm) it inverts the image and the wording reads back to front, I just want to flip the image to they will stick back to back like a normal flag. Any clues

If the image contains text that text will be flipped with the rest of the image.
You're going to need to do this in Photoshop (with raster) or Illustrator (with vector) to maintain the integrity of the text.

Photosmart 6520 Printing 2-sided without binding

I am trying to print a Two-Sided Brochure from Adobe InDesign CC, but every time I try, one side of the Artwork gets cut off on both the front and the back on the Short side. When I have US Letter selected I receive this message, "The Two-Sided option, Long-edge binding, is not available when the destination paper size is set to US Letter." Which I find ridiculous, because my old Photosmart c309g never had an issue like this when printing two-sided
I have tried switching to "US Two Sided Margins" and then clicking Long-Side Binding, but even when I do this the short side gets cut off. Even when I chose "Scale to Fit" the side gets cut off....I have tried finding ways to lessen the width of the "binding" area and also tried to find options to decrease the margins when printing "two-sided margins."
So I exported my InDesign file as a PDF and tried to Print from Acrobat Pro and it gave me the same error message, "The Two-Sided option, Long-edge binding, is not available when the destination paper size is set to US Letter." Only Acrobat doesnt even offer an option for "US LETTER TWO-SIDED MARGINS." Again even with Scale to Fit chosen, both the fornt and back have the artwork cut off on the short side.
There is no paperwork included that explains two-sided printing and the online manual is no help either.
Furthermore, the picture on the box shows a picture with NO white edges and Full bleed printing...is this possible with this model, or is the picture false advertising?
All I want is to print equally on both sides of the paper like I could with my old Photosmart Printer. Thanks for the Help.

Repair disk permissions
Restart the Mac
Install the printers full driver here: HP Photosmart 6520 e-All-in-One Printer Full Feature Software and Drivers
In addition, download this driver: HP Printer Drivers v3.0 for OS X
Try your print again and it should now be fixed if the printer was causing the problem. If the issue does happen to continue, post the issue in the Adobe Support Community
