2 suggestions for Score Edit in Logic

Hi,
I've just been looking for a place where I could do suggestions to the Logic developers, but couldn't find it.... well, maybe they read this
I'd really like the option of having chords with an alternative bass note (like G/B) displayed with the chord letter and the bass note on the same height. Now, the bass note is lower, and it takes a lot of vertical space. Besides that, it's harder to read. Most lead sheets I've seen have all letters on the same height.
Another hint: what if I could copy lyrics from a text document right into the score editor? Suppose I have the lyrics copied on the clipboard, and Logic would interpret all spaces as the "tab" we normally press to jump to the next note. Just make sure that all syllables have spaces between them, then paste at the first note - ready! It would save me a lot of typing!
Just my 2 cents...
Having said the above, it's really cool to be able to play a melody, play simplified chords on another track, and have a lead sheet with just a few mouse clicks (using "chord analyze"). It made me drop some friends' jaws so far
Regards,
Jaap

  • New mac suggestions for video editing

I have been looking at getting a new mac to do mostly video editing and DVD authoring. I currently have a 450mhz g4 sawtooth that I thought about upgrading, but figured with the costs to just retire it. I have about a $1200 budget so I am unable to splurge and get a mac pro. Does anybody have any suggestions on what would work best for the money i.e. G5, G4 DP MDD, Macbook.
    Thanks
    Jamie

A refurbished MacBook Pro is a little more than your budget (at $1,449), but I think it's a better choice than the MacBook, as the MacBook has no expansion slot and an inferior graphics card.
I eliminate the iMac for the same reason - no expansion slots.
Basically, it's not recommended to capture video to your built-in drive, so you'd need to connect either a FireWire drive or an eSATA drive (with an ExpressCard adapter). However, your video camera is also likely to be FireWire, so you'd be trying to daisy chain a camera through the FireWire drive which is likely to cause performance problems. Even if the MacBook had two FireWire ports (the newest models do, a FW400 and a FW800, but the refurbs are the previous generation) they still share the same FireWire bus, so it's wise to get a FireWire ExpressCard adapter to add a second FireWire bus to the computer. That way, the drive can use one bus and the camera can use the other. Most cameras operate at 100 Mbps speeds, and slow everything else on the same bus down to those speeds as well. While DV is only 25 Mbps, you still have much less headroom to work with if the bus is operating a 100 Mbps speeds.
If you go with a MBP (or any Intel Mac) and you don't already have Final Cut Studio 5.1, you'll need to order the crossgrade. For users of Final Cut Studio 5, it's only a $49 upgrade, but you have to take advantage of it before the end of the year.
Adobe's CS suite will run slower on an Intel Mac than on a PPC due to having to run under Rosetta, but most of those apps should still be tolerable. I don't think I'd want to use After Effects under Rosetta, however.

  • Score Edit makes Logic crash.

Whenever I edit the complete score of my compositions (pretty complex, long), Logic simply crashes. Has anybody here also experienced similar problems?
Also, I'm thinking maybe if I upgrade to version 8, the problem/bug will be sloved. Plus an updated version should have more features that helps me with my music writing. So I think I'm gonna get version 8. But I'm just wondering if version 8 and 7 are compatible. You know, the computers at my uni all run Logic 7 (some Pro, some Express). And if I have an 8 on my own machine, will I be able to continue the work from what I left off from my uni's 7? And vice versa?

Logic 8 does not install over Logic 7, so you are free to use version 7 when you please to do so.

  • Any suggestion for a damaged logic board rather than buy a new computer

Any suggestions for a damaged logic board rather than buying a new computer

The most frequent RAM vendor recommendations are Crucial.com and MacSales.com (OWC).
With respect the logic board, you could ask Apple about a "Fixed Price Repair" which will generally repair everything that is wrong with a Mac.

  • Drive setup suggestion for multiple users editing simultaneously?

At work here, a city college, not a professional company or broadcast studio, so resources are limited, we often have three people editing HDV content simultaneously in Final Cut Pro.
Keeping the content on our multiple backup servers, there's simply too much network traffic to do this smoothly.
Instead of keeping projects locally spread across multiple machines, I would like one centralized place for everything, for the Macs to access directly over gigabit or something else.
So, what kind of setup do you guys suggest for this?
The machines here are two quad-core G5s (no RAID or fiber-channel right now), and a Core2Duo iMac, F400 only.
Again, it'd need to be able to handle three HDV projects going on simultaneously without skipping due to having to seek back and forth all over the drive.
    Thanks.

Yes, an XSan system would perfectly fit the bill for what you want to do, but an XSAN is not a cheap solution. When it is all said and done, it will cost you tens of thousands of dollars.
The best, cheap solution would be to use Firewire drives. I would not duplicate a project onto three drives, because you will then always be trying to figure out which version is the most current. Instead, keep all of your project, capture scratch and render files on the firewire drives. Then move the drive to whichever computer you want to do the editing on.
Properly log & capture all your footage, then archive all your project files, because Firewire hard drives will fail over time, loosing all the info on the discs. I did say this was the cheap solution. "Cheap" does have its costs…

  • Suggestions for setting up external storage for video editing please?

I am just starting up as a one-man video-editing business, using a 24 inch iMac running Snow Leopard, with Final Cut Studio. I have realised I'll need an external hard drive for HD footage, and I also need to get some back-up solution in place. Looking for speedy i/o, I would like to connect via the ethernet port (if only eSata was included in the iMac, eh!)
I've been planning to get a Drobo, but looking around the forums I see that people say it's too slow for using as a working drive to keep all my source footage, so I've been looking at the G-tech 4 Tb, as it says it is designed for media-content production. Does anyone know if I could use two of the drives for working from and two as back up? Or would it be better to keep back-up entirely seperate, and get a Drobo for that for the G-tech to back up to?
But I am also wondering whether a Mac Mini could be a worthwhile addition to this set up? I find myself sitting around waiting for rendering to complete on clips in my timeline (not to mention exporting to Quicktime conversion!), and I wondered if I put a Mac mini with Xserve installed (Apple store offers this with two 500gb hard drives inside), maybe I could farm the rendering out to the mini while I get on with editing on my iMac? That would require two installations of FCP, which I thought was allowed, but just today in a forum I saw that one would have to be a laptop... anyone have any suggestions for getting rendering done without stopping FCP from doing other things simultaneously?
Also I don't know if that arrangement is even feasible... I see all these things like Xsan and Artbox... as a one workstation editing suite, does FCP handle all the dataflows for external working drive and external back ups okay without having to introduce more controllers?
And can anyone explain to me how I could set up an ethernet connection to an external hard drive, or does that require the extra controllers mentioned above? I've seen it said that you can do it via ethernet, but haven't seen how you can actually go about doing it.
Thanks for overlooking my newbie quality, any answers received with humble gratitude!
    Cheers, Syd

    Hi there,
as NLEdit said, there will be loads of answers to this.
IMO i'd avoid drobo like the plague. G tech drives have served me incredibly well working on a huge variety of broadcast projects (just over the water from you in Bristol), I've had no probs with FW800 when using DVCproHD, pro res is ok, sometimes a little slow with multiple layers and of course it eats up storage space. so I'd go for 2 4tb drives, keep the backup one in a different location.
one tip that has saved me countless times is to format them as follows:-
    mac os extended (not journalled)
    create 2 partitions
partition 1 - make this small (1gig) and call it "drive a - do not use"
partition 2 - the rest of available storage and call "drive a"
this is because the boot sector of the drive is within the first partition and with this method if it goes down it can be re erased without losing all your footage.
If you call your backup drive the exact same name and have the exact same folder structure, you will not have to relink if you get a problem.
Ignore getting a mac mini for rendering, won't help at all in FCP. instead I would make every attempt you can at buying a mac pro rather than an imac. much more expansion/speed possibilities and a more robust solution.
    best of luck
    Andy

  • Suggestion for a drum pad interface to use in Logic 7.2

Hello all. I'm looking for suggestions for a drum pad interface to use with logic 7.2. I was very interested with the Korg PadKontrol but unfortunately it is not UB compliant. According to my understanding it will only work in Rosetta. Can anyone else let me know what pad interface you use (UB compliant) and your experiences with it. I am doing alot of research on what to get but I really believe in Feedback from "real life" users. Thank you very much in advance for your time!!

the pad itself uses MIDI to communicate with the Mac. They bundle software with the pad that is not UB. So if you are not intending to use the editor software, it is irrelevent.

  • Any suggestions for programs that can convert mpeg1 to a format that can be edited in iMovie Version 8.0.6 (821) and/or iMovie HD Version 6.0.3 (267.2) Thanks

Any suggestions for programs that can convert mpeg1 to a format that can be edited in iMovie Version 8.0.6 (821) and/or iMovie HD Version 6.0.3 (267.2) Thanks

    Hi Mark
Was just looking for the answer to this exact question and I just found something that worked for me so don't know if it might be of use to you or you might have already solved your problem!  Basically when I was in iMovie and I clicked to import movies from the computer into iMovie and I found the clip I wanted to import, there are a few options.  I think it asked which Event I wanted to add it to but most importantly it asked me what file size I wanted...I had originally been clicking Large because it advised me to because it reduces the file size...but just on a chance there I selected 'Full - Original' for size and it imported perfectly into iMovie in it's original vertical form!
    Hope this helps!

  • Feature Suggestions for Logic Express

I think it would be a great thing to put all our user suggestions in one Topic for the powers that be @ Apple to see easily.
    1. Include Wave Burner in the next update ( We small project studio Guys need to burn redbook cd's as well)
Seeing as OS X comes with iDVD
I think this is a small thing to ask for ,but would be an incredible help !
Also a some midi plug-ins would be nice
    ie: Step sequencers, arpeggiator etc..

I'd like to see more options for waveform editing:
    1) For example, I select portion of the waveform, and I want to see what is average RMS power, maximum RMS power, how many clipped samples, and option to place markers where there are clippings. Even Amadeus Pro ($40) has it. It would be nice if I had no need to travel to Amadeus to check my audio files...
    2) Markers as thin vertical lines across the waveform. During recording I may notice some problems, and could insert markers. (Now I have markers from the insertation point to the end of the audio clip.)
When I record audio and little bit zoom in, I get splitted waveform being drawn on the screen. About 2-3 pixels blue background with the waveform, then 2-3 pixels of the empty space, then again 2-3 pixels waveform, then again 2-3 pixels empty space, etc. Can this be improved so that I see whole waveform during recording? In Sound Studio I can zoom in at 1:256 and still I can see normal waveform during recording.

  • Quad Config Suggestions for Editing Machine

EDIT: OOPS - Meant to post this in FCP Forum, sorry!
    Hi All,
Getting ready to order a Quad G5. Need some suggestions.
Regarding the three video card options... I will be editing (up to) 8- or 10-bit uncompressed video, doing some light titling and motion graphics, and DVD authoring.
What advantages (if any) does the QUADRO card provide in my situation? Would the mid level (7800 I think) card be sufficient? I don't plan on doing much heavy duty work with Motion, and I believe that FCP doesn't take advantage of advanced video cards for processing, so what is the advantage of the significantly higher priced card?
Also - what is suggested re: Hard Drives? Will internal and external SATA drives provide the throughput I need to capture and playback very high quality video (configged as a RAID I imagine)? As I mentioned, we'll be doing HDV as well as 8 or 10 bit uncompressed (although capturing lower res for offline editing)..
    Thanks!!
    Jason

Quad, 4.5 GB or more RAM, Decklink video card from BlackMagic Design, a X-Raid or a Sonnet 8 channel SATA PCI card and a external SATA enclosure like the MiniG.
HDforIndies.com is a good site to visit and learn more.
I'm not into video quite on this level, but the info should help.
    (no comp for product/site mention)

  • Any suggestions for how to get my logic keyboard working properly for FCE?

Any suggestions how to get my logic keyboard working properly for FCE? I can't use some of the shortcuts - insert, overwrite etc. maybe the system settings aren't correct?

This normally happens when debris builds between the trackball and the rollers on the inside of the mouse.
Turn the mouse upside down and rub the trackball vigorously on a sheet of paper or microfiber cloth to try and free it up.

  • Logic for Sound Editing

    Hi,
I'm a filmmaker and have read a lot of negative reviews on Soundtrack Pro 2 and it's stability issues with Final Cut. Would Logic Pro be a better alternative to use for sound editing and multi tack mixing.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Interesting, is STP2 that unstable ? I would not expect that from a Pro Application, plus I was under the impression that STP2 was designed specifically for (Audio for Video/Post Pro. editing), and would most likely have better, and more powerful tools to deal with this type of work when compared with LP8.
I'm guessing that there must be some STP2 users who are making use of its features, or is this not the case, due to the buggy/unstable STP2 issues ?
STP2 users ? Your Feedback on STP2 stability ? Why isn't Apple fixing it if it is unstable ?
Well, IMHO This is very odd.
    Thanks.

  • Logic 9 corrupts EXS insts created/edited in Logic 8

OK, I thought this issue was limited only to EXS instruments that used the VSL Performance Tool, but I'm finding that many (if not all) instruments I created or edited in Logic 8 are corrupted in Logic 9.
Something fishy is going on in the EXS architecture between these versions. To be specific, it seems that EXS in Logic 9 doesn't recall certain parameters that I've set in version 8: zone loop on/off, start & end points, crossfade, LFO settings and on and on.
This is an absolute show-stopper: I have HUNDREDS of custom EXS patches I created in Logic 8 alone that are unusable in Logic 9!
    Anybody else experiencing this?

Specifically, mod matrix parameters do not recall properly. On some mod/matrix slots, values known to have been saved with non-zero values are recalled as zero. See the following link for an insight:
    http://www.logicprohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=45379
"Logic Expert", I admire your optimism though I may note entirely share it. I post feedback because it's one of the few channels we have to report bugs. The value in the forums -- as Jim said -- is to make others aware of problems, get confirmation from other users experiencing the bugs, and, dare I say, vent on occasion. And, of course, to occasionally have a laugh.
For bugs there's also the ADC Bug Reporter, but there isn't enough time in the day to write up reports in the format they (understandably) request. If you're going to go the ADC route you're basically agreeing to be an unpaid beta tester. And the reality of using the Bug Reporter is that you won't necessarily get confirmation of the bugs you report. So you're feeding information into a system that promises basically nothing in return, not confirmation, not a 'thank you'. Only if you're really lucky will you get a response or a request for additional info.
What I don't quite understand is what is so inappropriate about people occasionally expressing their anger because the software they just paid hundreds of dollars for doesn't work as advertised or as expected. Not saying that continual rant-fests is the way to go... far from it. But the frustration is there. It's visible everyday, world-wide on the 'Net vis a vis news articles, blogs, forums, on any number of issues related to Apple products, from laptop batteries blowing up to über-buggy software titles. And Apple's reputation for non-response is legendary.
So what is it about Apple that they should be approached walking on eggshells, or not apprised of the tens of thousands of cumulative man-hours of wasted time and frustration assumed by customers unwitting of the beta-like software they just paid good money for? What is clearly not understood by some power-that-is (and I would also opine that the Emapple guys are not at fault here) is that _people make their living using these wares_. Logic is not a toy! But to advertise it as ready for public consumption and then to see things like this EXS mod matrix bug literally prevent people from making their living is reprehensible.
You speculate that Apple reads the feedback. Sure, I think sending feedback is very important. However, I speculate that the Emapple guys are already aware of some (but not all) of these bugs. But I can't help but think that their hand was forced in putting Logic 9.0.0 out to market when it really should have been put out to pasture with a lot of other RC's.
In terms of being hopeful, yes, let's hope that 9.0.1 comes out REAL quick and fixes, amongst other things:
    • EXS modulation matrix recall bug
    • UNDO history non-recall bug
    • no way to avoid creating take folders when punching into a track bug
    • remainder of punched-into MIDI region shortened when coming out of record
    • tempo event behavior that's vastly different from L8 (a confirmed bug with a fix purportedly in the works)
    • using "select unused" removes BIP files from the Arrange area
    • global track display doesn't function properly in the score editor
    • video thumbnail doesn't display in any Global tracks except those enabled in the Arrange page
The bugs are real, but the rest is my opinion, which may differ from your opinion, YMMV, etc. etc.

  • To buy or not to buy an entry level 13in MBP? Have a 30in display I would like to connect it to for photo editing and a little video. Any advice?

In the last year the logic board in both my 17in MBP (5yrs old) and Mac Pro (4yrs old) have died.  The local techies have advised due to cost and age that replacing them would not be worth it in the long run.
I am thinking to buy the most basic MBP and connecting it to my 30in cinema display would give me the best of both worlds - a desktop option when at home and a laptop for travelling.  Is this a viable option?  I would be using it for photo editing (photoshop) mainly and a little video editing with Final Cut Pro when connected to the cinema display and a little light internet usage, emails and such when on the go.
My other question is, do all MBP come with airport/wireless capabilities as standard?  (I had to purchase airport separately when I bought the other computers.
    Thanks in advance

The 13" MBP is c**p, it's a consumer MacBook quality in a silver case with a "Pro" sticker, comes with poor integrated graphics that overheat when it even looks at a web video, all shiny screens poor for video. Scores a mere 11 on Cinebench.
Like Sig said, 15" 2.0 (scores 18) or better, 2.2 (scores a decent 30) or better preferred, it has the hefty video card you need to power the external monitor.
also you get a anti-glare option, excellent for avoiding glare and reflections in portable uses.
also you may need the quad core i7 for processing video faster, dual cores are toast.
    17" high res has true 1920 x 1080 (1080i) with it's 1920 x 1200 pixel screen, I've got one. Sweet.
Sad to hear you have been having such a bad run with Mac's, it used to be they lasted 5-7 years or longer easy.

  • Some Bugs and Enhancement Suggestions for Offline DB models

I really like the way that this area of JDeveloper is shaping up, but I have a couple of bugs and few suggestions for enhancements.
    Bugs,
    1) when adding an index to a table, you can't edit the index name. If the generated name is too long, it doesn't allow you to create the index.
    2) When adding columns to an index, there is no LOV of columns so you have to manually type each one. It always defaults to the ?first column of the primary key? which seems odd.
    A few enhancement suggestions:
    1) on tables and columns it would be very helpful to be able to also have a logical name as well as a physical name
    2) if we have a logical name, it would be then very helpful to be able to set the display properties to show the logical vs. physical table and column names
    3) Tablespace objects. I would be okay if they were just the logical object (not necessarily generate DDL to create them). If I could use them as part of the table and index definitions.
    4) Table partitioning.
    5) Packages on a DB Diagram. Just for the documentation purpose of visually displaying all objects in an application.
    6) Ability to create views based on synonyms. Currently, it only allows to pick a table or view.
Just a few items that I have encountered trying to design a full application in JDeveloper.
    Thanks,
    Gary

    Gary,
thanks. I filed the enhancement request and bug based on your description
