2 tape drives and arcserve 11?

I acknowledge this is perhaps not the place to ask the question, but
Novell's forums are far more useful than CA's!
Basically, we've added another U320 SCSI card into our NW6.5 HP Server, and
connected a second Ultrium 2 tape drive.
Can Arcserve drive 2 tape drives, for the purposes of backing up 2 seperate
areas, to seperate tapes?
Cheers, Alan

  • Tape drive  and pci-x card  with Solaris 10 on  VMWare environment

I have a Sun X4170 server (x84_64) running VMWare ESXi 4.0. On it I have two VM guests- my production file server running Solaris 10 U7 and a test file server running Solaris 10 U9.
The X4170 has a PCI-X LSI Logic dual external U320 parallel scsi card. I have a tape drive + auto loader cabled to the X4170. It is a Quantum branded autoloader but I believe the tape drive itself is HP. The autoloader+tape drive share a single SCSI ID (6) but have separate LUNS.
I have two choices for making this system accessible to the OS:
    -     Virtualize the tape drive and loader individually.
    -     In VMWare, enable the scsi card as a pass through device. The SCSI card is then added as PCI device to the virtual machine (actually two devices since it is a dual scsi card.)
I had virtualized a single-drive tape drives with Vmware in the past.
However, when I tried I virtualize tape drive and loader, Solaris complained about the scsi id’s being invalid. I don’t think it likes two devices with a single scsi ID. Also, I think I need the backup software to see the REAL tape drive and autoloader (for inventory, changing tapes etc)

Actually, updating the kernel patches (and enabling hot plug service) did solve the problem. At some point during between testing the system before and after patching, the tape drive got turned off. Since the system patching was being done remotely it was not immediately obvious that the tape drive was off.

  • Tape Drive and Library Compatibility Matrix - Oracle Secure Backup Express

Does Oracle Secure Backup Express support IBM System Storage TS3200 Tape Library with two Tape Drives?
    Regards
    Rado

That library is listed on the support matrix which applies to both OSB-XE and OSB:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/secure-backup/pdf/Tape_Devices10.2.pdf
Keep in mind that OSB-XE licensing restricts usage to one server direct attached to one tape drive. Per your post, your library has 2 tape drives which cannot be used with OSB-XE but certainly could with OSB.

  • Tape Drives and TAR

    Hi all,
I have a two part question.
First, is there a command (probably MOUNT) in unix/linix (whatever OS X uses) to mount a SCSI LTO-4 tape drive?
Second, what is the switches in TAR to write an archive to that tape drive.

  • Tape drive selection for SAP r/3 Landscape

    Dear frinds,
We are presently in the process of selection of Tape drive for our sap r/3 landscape. I.e, in the process of sap sizing.
My backup requirements are upto 1 TB. We have development QA and PRD servers in our landscape. We are planning for SAN based storage solution.
What I would like to know are as follows...
    1. We are planning for SAN Based Tepe library.
With SAN Based tape library is it manditory to use Backup manager to initiate backup and restore operations.
My question is b'cos i need to upgrade skillset
Is it possible to mount the Single SAN Based Tape drive on my Development, QA and PRD as if they appear as local drives (file system )on the servers. If this is not possible i need to know about the tape drive which can be mounted as local tape drive.
I want only one tape drive in my landscap and I must be able to use sap r/3 tools to backup and restore.
Keeping presice my expectation what i want to know is : I want to conduct backup and restore operations in my SAP r/3 landscape with single tape drive and using SAP BRtools only( i.e. using DB13/ BRtools from command mode ).
It would be great suggested and participated in discussion.

  • Tape drive disappears from OS

We're running SLES 10 SP3/OES2 SP2 on a Dell server with an IBM LTO-4 tape drive and Arkeia Network Backup software. Sometimes our backups fail because the tape drive, /dev/st0, has disappeared from the system. The server may run for weeks or just days before it happens - we can't find any pattern. The only solution we've found is to reboot the server. Then /dev/st0 is visible again, and the tape drive works fine.
I've called Dell about this multiple times over the last two years. They've replaced the tape drive, and we install the latest firmwares as they become available. Dell doesn't seem to know what to do any more, figuring it's an OS issue.
Any suggestions on how to (1) troubleshoot the problem, (2) prevent it, or (3) fix the problem when it occurs without needing to reboot?

Are you sure it is not an issue at the controller level. I would have looked
there right away. What kind of controller is it using. I went through a
similar issue and finally popped a different brand controller in the system
and used it and never saw the issue again. Also cables can go bad as well.
Believe I have seen that one many times.

Is this a tape issue or a protection-agent failure? Any suggestions??

    Hi,
We have seen this when using OEM drivers - please install the Microsoft in-box tape drivers.
    1) Open device manager
    2) Locate the tape drive
    3) Right-click and look at the properties.
    3) Under the DRIVER tab, select UPDATE DRIVER
     a) Select the Install from list or specific location (Advanvced) - next.
     b) Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install. - next.
     c) Uncheck the Show comtabile hardware checkbox.
     d) Highlight LTO under the manufacturer.
     e) Highlight the LTO tape drive under model - then next.
     f) This should install the Microsoft ltotape.sys driver.
    4) Rescan the tape library in the DPM console, if a duplicate tape drive appears, then run the following utility.
c:\program files\Microsoft dpm\dpm\bin\DPMDriveMappingTool.exe to remap the tape drive and remove the duplicate
    5) Now inventory the library and try a new backup.

  • Backup Tape/Drive storage

Forever is a long time and no medium will meet that requirement.  Most financial data has to be stored for  < 10 years.  A lot of things change in 10 years, including tape drive technology.  You need to consider starting tape museum (keep functional tape drives and software including peripheral cables.)  You need to consider how you will validate the tapes are working and you are able to read data at set interval.  You may also consider AWS Glacier, technology developed to address your exact requirement.
Tapes are good for long storage but they the have to be stored properly, temperature and humidity levels are critical.  Consult recommended guidelines for the tape brand you purchase.

Hi, I am looking to get ideas on what you all might use to store your backup tapes and drives onsite or at a remote location. I don't have the option of using an Iron Mountain or 3rd party to do the storage so I have to store all of them and finance wants me to store them forever. So, I might have stacks and stacks of drives.
Any recommendations for cabinets or cases or ?
    Thanks!

  • AE extreme dies after connecting USB hard drive and killing it too!!!!!

I finally got around to connecting an external LaCie Rugged hard drive to my AE via the USB port on the back of the AE. Both devices were working properly before I did this. I was intending to activate the drive as a shared drive or a Time Capsule drive. I then opened the Time Machine menu and opened the Preferences menu item and tried to select a backup disk. No disk was found.
Shortly after this step I noticed that the AE light had turned off. I plugged the hard disk into the Mac using a Firewire connection and it was DEAD. Disk Utility will not list the disk. The AE hard boot does not work so it is DEAD too. $400 worth of devices now DEAD and beyond warranty.
Yes I now realize I should not have expected the AE to treat an USB drive as a Time Capsule. Anyone else done this and had the same loss of AE and hard drive?

    Hi DP,
The first computer I could actually put my hands on was a DEC PDP8. This was after the punchcard stack era had waned. Booted it up using front panel switches to input binary code to start the tape drives and load the programs. After that came the Data General model that was just as dumb but smaller and noisier. Computers were a pain in the * until I got my first Mac Plus in '86.
Why would a USB hard drive fry the Airport Extreme?

    Hello Folks,
    Hope all are fine.
We have connected SL 500 drives and a robot to the switch A ( Brocade silkworm )where the backup server is connected. The back server is also connected to the Switch B to keep redundancy.
The following are the zone details
    Swich A

    Switch ports: 1( bkpserver), 2( SL500 tape drive 1), 3(Robot)
    Swich B
    Zone name: bkpzone
    Swich ports: 1( bkpserver), 2( SL500 tape drive 2)
Once connected, the backup server is rebooted by using reboot -- -rv to detect the tape drives and robot. Unfortunately the two tape drives are not present in /dev/rmt and it rmt seems to be empty. But the Robot is detected.
The OS version is SunOS prdbw 5.9 Generic_122300-19 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V490.

  • Sony SDT-9000 scsi tape drive under udev

I've installed Arch .7 and have updated the system with pacman.  I set up the system to use udev.
I have an Adaptec AHA-7850 scsi card with a Sony SDT-9000 tape drive attached as the only scsi device.
When I check out /dev, there is an sg0 device, but no tape, st0, nst0, etc.  dmesg shows the tape drive identified at boot, and cat /proc/scsi/scsi also shows it.
I can't use mt on the sg0 device, and I'm not sure if that is my controller or my tape drive, and if the tape drive, how I gain access to it.
    Thanks in advance.

Ok, I figured it out.  I was using kernel26-scsi, but didn't realize I still needed to load the scsi tape module (st) into rc.conf.  Did that, now it works.

  • Testing tape drive

I am trying to write a c program that detects the tape drive and if it's busy or has a tape in it. I used the open function with the path to the driver "/dev/rmt/0" but it always returns 0. Only when i try to do a cpio will the program then let me know if the tape is empty or not. I would like to use a function to test this instead of using cpio. Anybody out there has any ideas ?

check out the ioctl() API for tape devices. i did some work on DLT tape drives a while back and that is what i used.
