2 TCs 1 network

I just upgraded to a new 2TB TC which I setup as a network and am using for TM backups. I want to use my old TC as a file server and to extend my network (the new TC is in the basement and the old TC will be on the 1st floor). Could someone help me accomplish this? thanks!

Thanks for the info.
To configure the upstairs TC to "extend", you have to first make sure that the basement TC is configured correctly to allow the extension of its network.
On the basement TC...
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab/label below the row of icons
Make sure there is a check mark in the box to "Allow this network to be extended"
Jot down the exact setting that you see for Wireless Security as you will need this to configure the upstairs TC
Update to save settings and the TC will restart in 25-30 seconds
On the upstairs TC...temporarily move this TC to the same room as the basement TC for configuration purposes.
Hold in the reset button for 10-12 seconds on the upstairs TC. You'll see the amber light begin to blink more quickly during this process. When you release the reset button, the TC will restart and after 25-30 seconds, you will see a slow, blinking amber light.
This "hard reset" will not affect any of the Time Machine backups that you may already have on this device.
On the "upstairs TC", Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Time Capsule tab/label below the row of icons to name your device, assign a device password and adjust Time Zone settings.
Click the Wireless tab/label
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as your basement TC wireless network
Check the box to allow wireless clients
Wireless Security = The same setting that you wrote down from the basement TC
Wireless Password = Same password as the basement TC network
Confirm Password
Update to save settings. The TC will restart and you should have a green light in 25-30 seconds. Now power down the TC and move it to the desired location upstairs and power it back up. You should now have extended wireless coverage from the upstairs TC.
Post back on your progress. I am not clear on your plans for the basement and upstairs TC.
To get Time Machine backups going again on the upstairs TC (if you have been previously backing up to that device from each computer), you'll need to reset Time Machine on each computer to "point" the backups to that TC to allow Time Machine backups to continue as before.
If you "point" any computer's Time Machine backups to the "new" basement TC, Time Machine will make a new complete backup of the computer on the first pass and then backup any incremental changes thereafter.

Can I use 2 Time Capsules on the same network
Posted: Jul 23, 2009 1:49 PM Reply Email
Here is what I want to do. I currently have a time capsule used for one end of the house. Currently my 2 kids rooms are in an addition that I have run a cable from the time capsule to each of their rooms. If I want to give them wireless for that part of the house could I add another TC, for wireless and they can both backup their macbooks to that time capsule.
So Can I add a 2nd time capsule to extend by "N" network, or should I just go with an AP express or extreme and let them each have their own HD backup for each macbook?
    Brett

Have bought many reconditioned (Refurb) product from Apple site and have always been happy with them. To date none have failed me and we have been Apple customers since 2006. With that said when you buy Refurbs make sure you know what model you are getting. The current TCs on the Apple site are last generation. The way to tell is to check the model number against the current one. Easy way to do this is to put both in the shopping cart and compare the model numbers. The Refurb model number is FB277LL/A and the new TC model is MB765LL/A. The first digits identify whether a Refurb or new, the rest should be the same if they are the same model number.
Before you buy, now which model number you want and then check other sites to compare prices. I recently purchased a new TC on Amazon for a better price then the Apple Store Site. For larger Refurb purchases like MBPs, we choose to buy directly from Apple; but for peripherals we often buy from OWC, Amazon, and other sites. Hope this helps.

  • How can I add a Time Capsule 3TB to a network with an older Time Capsule 2TB?

I have a 2010 Macbook Pro with 500 GB HD and a 2013 Macbook Pro with 1TB HD. I am using Mavericks and will migrate to OS X Yosemite when it becomes available. I tried backing both up with my older Time Capsule with 2 TB of space but it isn't enough. So, today I bought the new Time Capsule 3 TB to add on to my network. I want to use both TCs in order to have 5 TB for backup.
I have a Brother printer and my Comcast Cable Modem connected to the old Time Capsule. I also have an Apple TV with 1080p HD that uses the internet wirelessly through the old Time Capsule.
My first question is what should connect to what and in what order? Should the new TC connect directly to the old TC and if so, with what cable?
My 2nd question is: Can I move several 100 GB of old data that I rarely use onto the 3TB TC so that I could access the data from either computer whenever I need it, without having the data on either computer?
    Thank you.

This is a pretty easy setup.
Basically just plug the new TC WAN port into the old TC LAN port.
Run the airport utility on the computer and it should recognise that the new TC is plugged into another one.. and setup bridge mode and create a wireless network.. if not you can jump in and edit it at the end of the setup.
You could also swap things around with the new TC as the main router.. and the old one as the secondary.. but people are experiencing some issues with WAN connection to some cable modems.. so you need to be prepared if you have issues to go back to the original setup.
You will use an ethernet patch cable to connect them. I recommend if you have them in the same area place them at least a couple of meters apart.. so buy a 2-3M patch cable at least.. (8-9ft). Even better would be to install the new TC closer to the clients that will use it.. to improve wireless in dark corners of your house.. but all that can come later.
My 2nd question is: Can I move several 100 GB of old data that I rarely use onto the 3TB TC so that I could access the data from either computer whenever I need it, without having the data on either computer?
This is a lot harder question.. not in how to do it.. it is simple.. copy and paste files onto the new TC.. that is not the issue..
The problem is backup of the files that no longer exist on the computers. Ironically the TC is problematic for one major reason.. it cannot back itself up.. nor can Time Machine (TM) backup network drives. Even though TM uses the TC to store the backup it cannot actually work to backup the TC. The problems are not insurmountable.. you can use a third party backup.. eg CCC but it will be extremely slow. A better strategy if one of your computers is a desktop is to install an external drive and share it to the network. The data rate will be hugely better.. and TM can backup as per normal.

  • How do use Time Machine to back up to my network drive?

I have been dealing with this issue for days. When I had bought my MacBook Pro a couple of weeks ago I figured Id try and back it up to my 1.5tb Western Digital HD that's plugged into the USB port on my router. I Have connected to it through finder and can access it fine however my main point in getting to it is to back up my MacBook with Time Machine over the air to the external HD. I have researched and tried many tricks such as running codes in finder to create a "sparsebundle" using the code " hdiutil create -size 100g -fs HFS+J -volname "Time Machine" COMPUTERNAME_XXXXXXXXXXXX.sparsebundle " in Terminal. I was able to succeed in creating one but my problem comes when I want to transfer it to the network drive. I use the code " rsync -aE COMPUTERNAME_XXXXXXXXXXXX.sparsebundle /Volumes/NETWORKDRIVE/ ". However I get error codes such as "file could not be transferred (23)" and "no file or directory (2)". Also before I did all of these steps I made sure to make network drives discoverable in Time Machine by running the code " defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1 " in Terminal. However without using the trick that I keep getting errors with Time Machine gets error message 45 when attempting to back up to the Network Drive straight after making the Drive discoverable. I know Apple niched Time Machine back ups on network drives after or toward the end of Leopard and thats why it is so hard to do it now but I was hoping someone can aid me in my never ending problem?

    Hi Barney
What format is the drive on the router? It has to be HFS+ (Extended, journaled).
Sorry Barney, that's not correct in this context. The user must create an HFS+ sparse bundle and then upload it to the network drive. The network drive will be formatted as its formatted.
I also believe it has to be an Apple Airport Extreme router.
Again, that is not the case. I am successfully using Time Machine to an Iomega network drive for the last 12 months. No issues at all.
However, you are making your backup completely unreliable.
There may be an element of truth to this, however, I have used the "Star Wars" interface to recover individual files directly.  If I should need to perform a larger recovery and for some reason I can't get the usual access through Apple software, I have established that I can directly access the sparse bundle on the drive and mount it on the computer. Once there, I can just copy files directly from it. The sparse bundle folder structure makes it easy to get the latest version of every file with a couple of mouse drags.  This means that I will always be able to get access to my backups.
Apple nixed it because they couldn't get it to work reliably. I imagine they only support that sort of thing on their own Time Capsule because they can control the wireless transmission and error checking (and they sold TCs specifically for that purpose).
I don't know why Apple nixed it - I've had zero problems with this configuration and it is by far the most sensible way to use Time Machine. It seems completely pointless to have a portable MacBook and then have to physically connect a drive to it permanently for backup purposes.
I've only had personal experience with the Iomega drive - maybe it only works with a limited number of manufacturers?

  • Use old TC as Network Drive

I am now using a 500 GB Time Capsule ("TC") with my iMac and intend to buy a new TC (1 TB) to replace the existing one.
How can I connect the old TC with the new one and use it as a network drive. Can I connect the 2 TCs using Ethernet or USB. I use Time Machine with the old TC, how can I copy the backup data from the old TC to the new one? Thanks.

Alilulu, Welcome to the discussion area!
How can I connect the old TC with the new one and use it as a network drive.
If you want to connect it wirelessly configure the old Time Capsule to join the wireless network provided by the first.
If you want to connect it via Ethernet configure the old Time Capsule to act as a bridge (not sharing a single IP address).
Can I connect the 2 TCs using Ethernet or USB.

    USB - No

  • Multicast Show and Share live event from TCS

    Hi
I have a deployment with DMM, SnS, and TCS and C90 Telepresence codec.
The TCS is sending the live stream to the SnS server. The question is if it is possible to multicast that live event to the SnS clients, or is unicast the only option here?
If unicast is the only option with the current deployment, is it possible to make a multicast stream with a different deployment?
I would appriciate any thoughts on this.
    Regards,
    Ola Dallokken

Hi, yes you can use mutlicast to do this(but as Gabriel says its not SNS tat streams it, it is merely a container looking at the raw stream from the TCS or wherever you choose to pull it from) but its a complete waste of time IF your network isnt setup for Multicast AND if you have WAN sites running slow links...TCS uses Microsoft Windows Media Server for Uni/multi and is inherently TERRIBLE in sending multicast traffic..! If you have wireshark have a look for yourself..unicast it can deal with and it will send a nice consistent stream but Multicast bursts all over the shop(so a 500k stream can burst to 2mb..which is not a good thing if yhou know about routing congestion etc etc)...took me months of workng out the root cause of the issue and to eventually get Cisco to fess up about it and say 'yes' its an issue. Its really a Microsoft issue and unfortunately thats what Cisco's TCS platform sits on....:).
Forget reading he 'standard' Cisco blurb as it will say try this and try that, tweak this and tweak that but in the end you just cant use it (unless as i say your on a LAN or your WAN has big links and can deal with the overheads!) also unless you have a TAC engineer who has actually deployed this and not just read the manual they wont having wokring knowledge of the issue either. It took me a long time to find someone at Cisco who actually did know the issue and would actually admit it was a issue..I guess thats why the developed ECDS. Now thats a good product. But as usual not cheap at all.
Thats why Cisco talk about 'Wowza'..!(or atleast they use it as an example in thier blurb for streaming and not the TCS) As it can deal with multicast fine BUT the catch is its not supported by Cisco...:)...the only REAL solution is to use a content delivery system like Cisco ECDS. Believe me i have spent months going through this with TAC Engineers and i have the current ' Cisco Expert' in this field who has helped me alot with this. Its a very sad fact to find out 'after' the fact.
Also the new SNS will be very different so will lend itself to ECDS in the long run anywa so all this we are discussing becomes a mute point...
Hope this helps.  If you need any assistance apart from the TAC let me know as i have just spent a fair while deploying this myself and working out 'ALL' the non documented issues, of which there seem to be alot. Once its in it seems to work ok though.

  • My TCs say there is Firmware update to 7.6.4 but in the middle of updating stuck...

I have 2 TCs and one Airport Express, all running Firmware 7.6.1.
Now Airport Utility says I should update them to Firmware 7.6.4.
The progress bar shows updating going on until about one third. Then it stops and a modal dialog says "a problem occured" or similar.
It makes no difference from which computer I do the update, nor which Airport device I select to be updated, always that unspecified error after one third...
My suspect is that the image of 7.6.4 is not completely loaded on my computers. But where is it stored and by what utility? How can I reinitialize the complete process of updating?

Try to do it with ethernet.. do not use wireless.. turn wireless off.
And make sure the TC is either in router or bridge mode to the main modem/router in the network.
If possible do not use Mavericks.. it has more bugs than your normal insect zoo.
The files are stored in the computer before the update even begins.
    ~/Library/Application Support/Apple/AirPort/Firmware
Tell me which model TC you have .. A1xxx from the rubber mat and I can tell you the size of the firmware file.
Or you can see it yourself.. it is in version.xml but most seem to be about 6.6MB eg.
    7.6.4.basebinary newest productID 117 sizeInBytes 6600996 sourceVersion 76400.10 version 7.6.4 location http://apsu.apple.com/data/117/041-9694.20130207.Dr0pg
The actual file will be slightly different of course depending on the model.
    The information is here..
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1218
You can apparently do it from the iOS version of the airport utility.. which might work better than Mavericks.. well anything would wouldn't it!!

  • Extending Wireless Network Is Crippling Data Speeds - Time Capsule 802.11ac

Just set up a new Time Capsule (3TB ac) to replace my older 2TB dual-band TC. I had successfully been running a network with another dual-band Airport Extreme (bought this year/the model before current one) extending from the older TC.
Now when I extend the network using my new TC and the same, older AE, the whole networks grinds down severely. Most times, pages dont even start to load for 10-20 seconds, and then I watch the load up slowly.  Testing the speed on Speedtest, the data seems to stop and start a few times, sometimes peaking at around 30Mbpsm but the rate is all over the place.
The second I turn the wireless Network Mode to "Off" on the AE, the system comes right back up and Im getting my constant 60 Mbps.
Im up to date on all firmware.
    Running OSX 10.9
This is a days old iMac 27" i7
Something seems seriously wrong here and Im at a loss for figuring it out. I was hoping the new range of the TCs would allow me to get rid of the extending AE altogether, but even in my modest sized home, the network is sketchy from the opposite end of the house. So unfortunately, Im going to have to figure something out here. I really hoping the answer isnt to buy a new AE with ac.

You are aware that you must completely reset a cable modem whenever you change the device that is connected to the modem, correct?
The cable modem may need a power down period of up to 30 minutes, sometimes longer.
The reason for this is that the cable modem associates with the first device that it connects with. If you connect another device, the cable modem "remembers" and "looks" for the old device. When it does not see it....because it is no there.....it refuses to give out an IP address to the "new" device.
The trick is make the cable modem "forget" the original device, so it will associate with a new device.
If you want to try the 802.11ac product, see this excellent User Tip provided by forum expert Tesserax for the correct setup.

  • Can I use Time Capsule as a backup drive on an existing network?

Sorry of this is an obvious question - but I have a WiFi network here (based on a Netgear Router) and want to be able to back up to a hard drive that's kept in another room.
(That way - if burglars steal my computer - they won't also steal all my backed-up files sitting on a hard drive next to my computer!)
1: Can I put a Time Capsule in the next room - get it to show up on my netwlrk - and back up to it?
2: Or is there a better / cheaper way to do this? Are there other hard drives you can hook up to a network? (I tried this a few years ago and the options weren't good...0
    Thanks a lot,
    - Greg

Just tried turning on the wireless in my TC - couldn't get it to connect to my router's wireless network. Status stays amber.
There have been several posts recently about people trying to get Airports/TCs to talk wirelessly to non-apple base stations and having problems.
You could always try turning off the wireless on your router and creating a new wireless network using the TC as the wireless base station. You'd have to connect the router to the TC with ethernet. Maybe you could move the router to the bedroom (or anywhere else that has a phone line, assuming that you've got an ADSL modem/router.

  • Cisco TCS and Show n Share recording

Can the TCS integration with SHow n Share be used to record content with a multi party call.
Using one of our EX60’s I was able to get TCS setup to record.
It is working for an individual but when we have two connected and try to call the TCS it will only let us do an audio.
It seems to be a VCS-related issue as once I have 2 end-points joined, the only option to join a 3rd is Audio – regardless if it is the TCS or a test system out on the Internet.

Our C40 codecs do not have the multisite license installed so that explains why this is failing when initiating from this codec. We have Edge 95 codec that can successfully complete the 3rd party video call natively. By default it has the multi-site option. That appears to be our limitation here.
EX60's do not have a MCU within the codec and i think would require an MCU on the network if we wanted to initiate a video conference from it. The EX90s do have an MCU within the codec but would require the purchase of an mcu option license to activate.
Please anyone correct me if you see a flaw in my findings!

  • Two Timecapsules, one network

    Hi,
I have problems with the setup of my network.
I have a (coax) modem with good internet signal. I don't use the  wifi function on that modem.
I want to use two time capsules to extend the wifi signal, but it must be one network.
The two time capsules are connected by wire. ( 20 meters between them )
Can someone help me and give me the settings of the time capsules or give me a link where i can find this?
    Thx!!!

If you want to reconfigure your Cisco modem/router to function only as a simple bridge mode modem, then that is a completely separate operation that will need to be done before you can set up either of the Time Capsules.  Turning off the wireless on the Cisco modem/router will not make it a modem......it will still be a wired router if you only turn off the wireless function of the device.
Whether or not it is possible to setup the Cisco as a pure modem might be a question for your ISP or Cisco support. Some modem/routers or gateways can be setup to operate as a simple modem and some cannot. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the Cisco product that you have, so I cannot offer advice on that product.
Assuming that the Cisco modem/router can be setup to operate only as a modem.....not a router......TC1 must reset back to factory default settings and set up again to function as the main router for the network. You can use the same network name that you are using now if you wish when you reconfigure the TC again, or use a different network name.
Once TC1 has been set up and is working correctly, then TC 2 will be set up to extend the network using Ethernet.
So, in summary, you really have 3 separate operations that need to be done to accomplish your goal.
    1) Reconfigure the Cisco modem/router to function only as a simple modem
    2) Reconfigure TC1 to act as the main router for the network
    3) Reconfigure TC2 to extend the signal using Ethernet from TC1
We can help with 2) and 3), but I am not familiar with the Cisco modem/router that you have, so I cannot provide help on that operation, which must be done first before the TCs can be reconfigured. If your Internet Service Provider (ISP) supplied the Cisco modem/router to you, then I would suggest that you go to them first to ask them if it is possible to setup the Cisco only as a modem.....and.....whether or not they will support that type of configuration.
Please post back when you are ready to reconfigure TC1 and TC2.

  • "Unexpected error" (s) trying to add Extreme and Time Capsule to existing apple network

Hi, I am running an Airport Extreme as Base Station, plus an Airport Extreme and and two Time Capsules (serving different computers) extending the network. Everything network wise crashed last night and I have managed to factory reset the Base Station and one Time Capsule by creating a completely new network. I can see the other AE and TC in Airport Utility but overtime I try to connect them it shows 'Unexpected Error'. I have tried factory reset.Any thoughts as to the best methodology for success please? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. Eventually I created another new network all via the iMac, and got the AE base station and the two TCs working, but the other AE defied my best efforts...until I was connecting my iPad to the new network and decided to use the Airport Utility on the iPad. For some reason that worked. Can only assume some network conflict or similar software issue. I hate not knowing the root cause, but at least it's working. Cheers.

  • Create a roaming Guest Network

I'm planning to expand my network with a second Time Capsule to increase network coverage. The TCs would both be of a version with simultaneous dual band and guest network. The TCs would be connected with wired ethernet and one of the TCs would serve as DHCP server.
My plan is to create a roaming network, but according to the manual the second TC would be configured as a bridge. Doesn't that disable the Guest Network feature? Is there any way to have both a main roaming network and a guest roaming network?

    Welcome to the discussions!

Unfortunately, no. As you point out, when the second Time Capsule is in bridge mode, the availability of a Guest option is not present.

  • 5ghz Network only way to get 300 mbits?

Just upgraded to one of the new TCs. Most of my wireless tech is b/g but a few of my items, MBP and Xbox have N cards. If I want the fastest speeds possible for those I need to go in and enable the 5ghz network right? Cause after setup i am only connecting @ 130bits. Thanks.

The 300 mbps is a theoretical maximum connection speed and not something you are likely to achieve in practice. With all 802.11x wireless technologies, the router and computer will automatically reduce the connection speed to maintain a reliable connection as the signal strength falls. You'll only get 300 mbps if the computer and router are next to each other. Thus, whilst enabling 5GHz may increase your speed, you are unlikely to achieve 300 mbps and may well get no more than you currently get at 2.4GHz. I have a new Airport Extreme and am currently connection to my iMac at "only" 108mbps - and occasionally at up to 160 mbps - using 5GHz.
