2 Thunderbolt Macs sharing 1 Thunderbolt Drive

I have a 2012 iMac and a Drobo 5D (Thunderbolt Mass Storage) where I store all of my iTunes movies, music, etc. Both devices here have Thunderbolt capability. The iMac and the Drobo 5D are connected via Thunderbolt and this is how I manage and share my iTunes library. I then use Home Sharing via iTunes and play said media on my Apple TV3.  Of course this only works when the computer is on. Here is where the conundrum begins. I also need to use bootcamp quite often. When I do, the shared media disappears (obviously) and it leaves others in the house unable to view said media via Home Sharing on the Apple TV.
Is there a way for me to have 2 Mac desktops hooked up directly via thunderbolt to the same storage device such as my Drobo 5D?
Essentially, my ideal workflow would be something like...
iMac: Manage iTunes media and store it on the Drobo 5D
Mac Mini: Take the stored media and Home Share it via iTunes to ATV3
ATV3: Play back the stored media from the Drobo 5D that is shared out via Mac Mini
Note - All connections need to be Thunderbolt as I've found that even when connected via Gigabit Ethernet, there is too much congestion for the ATV3 to handle (poor playback).
Is this possible / any thoughts?
Thanks!

I have a G drive mini and 2 LaCie hard drives that connect fine using USB. Thunderbolt to fire wire 800 adaptor will not connect to either my iMAC  or Mac air or LaCie drives. Help

Have you tried any of these soundcards designed for 2.0?
The 3.0 port is categorically designed to be comoatible with all 2.0 devices. The port itself will adapt to the usage parameters of the device.
But if you really want to downgrade, then simply plug any 2.0 hub into a MBA 3.0 port. The ports on the hub will be 2.0.

  • Boot windows 7 from an external ssd/thunderbolt drive

    I have an iMac 27", Mid 2011, 3.4 Ghz i7 Quad core with a 2TB internal HDD OSX 10.7.5 and a MacBook Air 2014 - Mavericks.
I want to create either a 64Gb USB 3 Flash stick or, if necessary (as I would have to buy it) an external thunderbolt drive to run Windows 7 rather than partition my internal hard drive on either computer.
Basically I want to create a totaly portable windows boot drive to run windows 7 and some software I need for work (I just really hate using my slow, POS, work laptop) to run on either mac as I need it
    Is this possible?
Will bootcamp recognise either of these types of drives to switch between OSX and Windows - I know USB drives are not recognised?
Can someone point me in the right direction on idiot proof instructions on how to create this?
Thanks for your help in advance

That is true, and may indeed work. You'll likely know during the installation of Windows if it allows you to select a partition on an external drive to install it to.
I'd be very interested in hearing your results.

  • My G RAID thunderbolt drive mounted just fine onto my iMac this morning. And now it will not mount despite my various efforts. I don't know what else to do. Can someone help me with this?

My G RAID thunderbolt drive mounted just fine onto my iMac this morning. I copied some files from another drive onto the RAID drive, ejected it, and worked on another project for a few hours. When I went to mount the RAID drive again so I could work on the project associated with the drive (I'm a freelance video editor) it would not mount. I've tried everything. It boots up perfectly fine, the drive seems to have no hardware problems. It shows up on Disk Utility and in System Information but is listed as not mounted. I've verified it on Disk Utility and it tells me everything with the drive is fine. I've tried all the various restarting my iMac, ejecting and reconnecting the drive, shutting down the whole system and starting it back up, relaunching Finder, and nothing works. Starting to panic because this is a client's drive, I have no idea what the issue is, it worked perfectly fine only hours ago, nothing happened to it in the meantime, and I fear continuously connecting and ejecting it because I don't know what the state is with the data and if this is only going to further aggravate the problem. I've been up and down Apple and g-raid forums and can't get a straight answer anywhere. I need to know that the data is safe, the drive is undamaged, and how to get it to mount on my iMac. Can anyone out there help me with this??

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • What is the file name of the thunderbolt driver?

Does anybody know the file name of the thunderbolt driver that will allow me to access a thunderbolt drive from Windows? The BIOS see's the Promise controller/drive, but device manager doesn't see it. The boot camp support files from Apple are not installing automatically - it fails with no specific error except try again. I'd like to try and load the thunderbolt driver manually. Does anybody know the file name and folder this driver would be in?
    Thanks.

  • Thunderbolt driver macpro mid 2010 unavailable

The thunderbolt driver in my macpro mid 2010 it's unavailable
I update my OS X several times and nothing change,  finally I re install to OS X 10.7.4 and gave me the same problem.
I need connect my Matrox MXO2 Mini with Max to my MacPro and the sistem says there is not drivers installed.
Before that I try in my MacBook Pro and the Matrox connect ok and works fine.
Both software and firmware on my Matrox it's up to date with 3.1.1 driver version.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks a lot

Sorry to disappoint you, but those are not thunderbolt ports.  Wakko Warner is correct in that Mac Pro's don't have thunderbolt ports.
What you have are mini DisplayPort ports.  They are designed specifically and only for displays and display adapters such as you have.
Fortunately or unfortunately, Apple made the thunderbolt port use the same physical dimensions as the displayport port, so it's easy to confuse them.
I've got 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro that also has the mini displayport port.  How I wish it was a thunderbolt port!

  • 2012 27" iMac(late) won't boot to Thunderbolt Drive

Got a new 2012 27" iMac and I can't get it to boot to my Thunderbolt Drive.  I can use my 2011 iMac and 2011 MBP and it boots to the Thunderbolt Drive just fine.   Thunderbolt drive is a Little Big Disk SSD drive.
After start up I get a chime, white screen then a cycle with a line through it then about 30 seconds later the iMac turns off.  Any Ideas?

Just an additional note for future reference: in general, Macs have never been able to boot from a system older than what they came with with a few exceptions: machines that were made right around the time a new OS is released would mostly still be able to boot into the previous OS even though they may come loaded with the new version. In this particular case, you are also adding a different build = special OS build version, which complicates things further.
Check for updates on this article - it doesn't even have the new iMacs yet:

Checking further, this article includes the new 21.5":

  • Ejecting thunderbolt drive crashes iMac

    Hello!
Hoping someone can help me with this issue. I use a LaCie thunderbolt drive (connected via thunderbolt) to keep video editing projects on, the drive functions just fine on startup and while its running, however, upon ejecting the drive my iMac crashes. When i connect the drive via USB3 the drive & my computer function normally & I can eject the drive. This is my only thunderbolt drive and the only computer I can test this on, but is something wrong with my thunderbolt I/O? Or is there a weird software issue that I'm not aware of?
    Thanks in advance.

Best case scenario is that you may just need to update a driver or firmware for the drive.
I had an old DVD player from Lacie that didn't work until I updated the firmware.
Check out their web site and download anything relevant.
Also, make sure you haven't got both Thunderbolt and USB3 cables plugged in at the
same time. The old Lacie drives only liked *ALL* Firewire or *ALL* USB serially
    connected devices.
Next you should probably eliminate hardware problems one by one. Try using a different
cable, a different port and a different drive if you can get hold of / borrow one.
If all that fails or you have taken it as far as you can, contact the re-seller to see if they
can test the drive at their facilities or Lacie.

  • Red Light on Promise Pegasus R4v Thunderbolt drive

I was told by Promise to use the promise utility to fix this but I can't install the software downloaded from their site because it says Apple doesn't support it. It didn't come with a disk. Before I go and load all my data on this thing I want to know that drive is working right and a red light is not a good start, and knowing I can't use their software is even more troubling.

I had this problem with an external G-Drive thunderbolt which I bought in August.  Started getting this message and replaced the drive at the Apple store under the 15 day return, and was very careful about not accidentally unplugging the replacement drive.  No problems until today. Yesterday, I accidentally unplugged the drive.  Now, after rebooting I am getting the message every 5-20 minutes.  So it appears there is some kind of reliability issue related to the drive state caused by a hot eject.  The vendor website the states the drive can be "damaged" by ejecting the drive without properly dismounting it through the finder.  Hopefully the problem is in a magnetic component that can be reformatted.
Looking around I am seeing 5 or 6 threads that have come up in the last couple of months related to external thunderbolt drives.  This is obviously an issue that could sneak through QA.  So it appears to be a generic issue.  Maybe Yosemite would also fix it, but I'll start with a reformat.
After I format this thing I will let you know what happens.

  • New Thunderbolt drive, How, or Do I even need to tell Lightroom where the Library is?

I have learned, over time, to be very carful with Lightroom and now is no exception...
I copied all of my files, the complete library of photos, over to a new Thunderbolt hard drive. I then erased and renamed the old firewire drive and now use that for a backup.:
My question is: When I opened Lightroom it acted as if nothing had happened and all of the photos are showing. What is Lightroom doing? Is it using the old drive which is now a backup even though I renamed it? or, is Lightroom 5 so smart that it sees the new Thunderbolt drive and library and just decided on its own that 'this' is what is going to use?
I have no idea what is going on, but since it is day 1 I want to be sure Lightroom is using the correct library, not the backup.
Can someone help me determine that things are in place and working as they should?
    TIA,

I apologize for having to ask so many questions. But what was the name of the old drive before you renamed it? Additionally, if you go to the library module and right-click on one of your images, one of the options in Windows is to "Show in Explorer" and on the Mac I assume it would be to "Show in Finder". If you click on that option it should open your system browser and show you the folder where that file is located. And at the top of that window you should be able to see the name of the drive and folder you are looking at.
The name of the old drive was "LaCie New 2TB" - I will now look at what comes up when I choose 'Show in finder' ( I'm on a Mac)
Okay, back here and what I found was right-clicking on one of the images brings up "“A32Z7813.CR2” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
So, even though I have no question marks or exclamation marks, Lightroom does not see the original Library or Catalog (which one is it?) of original images.
So, I think the question is, How do I tell Lightroom to use the complete original files that are now on the new Thunderbolt drive?

  • External Thunderbolt Drives Eject Randomly and Name Changes to Blank

I Have two external thunderbolt drives connected to the trash can mac pro ... sometimes they eject randomly with one drive renaming itself to blank ...
    Anyone ?

    Aloha,
It was a long week. Here is an update.
Had the opportunity to go to the Apple Store yesterday and purchase new thunderbolt cables, and hooked everything up this morning.
I disconnected the Seagate drive from the sled, and brushed the contacts.
The Seagate hard drive did not boot on my iMac and Disk Utility could not see it. That said, when booted to my wife's iMac, Disk Utility could see the drive, but I could not verify or repair it. The data from my wife's iMac is attached.
Also, I tried to run Data Rescue 4. It would not see the drive. I do have Disk Warrior, if that is a reasonable option to try.
Additionally, the LaCie (now connected to my iMac with a new thunderbolt cable) has not yet been ejected. The computer has gone to sleep several times and I have awakened it.
I very much appreciate your thoughts and time, And I look forward to your thoughts, To include any experience in getting the data off of the Seagate. It contains seven years worth of photographs, which I would hate to lose. I also got the message about redundant backups. There may be some of the backup in Crash Plan.

  • IMac crashes when powering off external Thunderbolt drive

    Hi,
I have an external LaCie d2 USB 3.0 drive that is connect to my iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011, 3,1 GHz Intel Core i5, 12 GB RAM) through Thunderbolt. Whenever I power off the drive by pushing the power button (yes I did verify: all partitions have been ejected correctly before in the Finder and verified in Disk Utility), the iMac crashes. It starts up again, displays a screen stating the computer was not shut down properly and then immediately restarts. After that it boots up fine.
This started occurring after having installed 10.10.2 Beta. I did file a report with Apple. As this was beta software I decided to completely reinstall the iMac from scratch (a complete fresh install, just imported my documents manually after) and everything was working fine again (10.10.1). Boom, after having updated 10.10.2 yesterday the problem is back.
I did manage to find a workaround: when I connect the drive through a UBS cable it works fine. Conclusion: this seems to be caused by a Thunderbolt related update in 10.10.2.
Question: is any one else with an external Thunderbolt drive experiencing this and has perhaps found a fix?
    Thanks,
    Kurt

    Same issue:
    - 4TB LaCie d2 Thunderbolt & USB3.0 drive (model # 9000303)
    - iMac (27’’ mid-2011), Thunderbolt firmware version 25,1 and Port Micro firmware version 2.1.3 (as seen in System Information)
    - OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
Unmounting LaCie d2 disk partitions is OK: the drive spins down and goes to sleep without problem. However when I take the power off (with the small switch at the rear of the unit), the iMac experiences a kernel panic.
This issue did not occur with Yosemite 10.10.1, and does not occur either with another LaCie drive (8TB LaCie 2big Thunderbolt drive, model # 9000246). So the issue is specific to OS X 10.10.2, and only certain models of drive(s).
We need a fix from Apple - the Operating System should be rock-solid in any circumstances.
Curiously, OS X does not write a kernel panic log with every occurrence. It’s only after the 3rd or 4th kernel panic that it would actually produce this log:

  • TS3742 Kernel Panic/System Restart when disconnecting thunderbolt drive

I have isolated the kernel panic to the connected thunderbolt devices. More specifically, every time I disconnect an external thunderbolt drive, there is a kernel panic and the system restarts. Any ideas?
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name: Mac Pro
      Model Identifier: MacPro6,1
Processor Name: 6-Core Intel Xeon E5
      Processor Speed: 3.5 GHz
      Number of Processors: 1
      Total Number of Cores: 6
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
      L3 Cache: 12 MB
      Memory: 32 GB
    Yosemite 10.10.2

Are you ejecting the device before disconnecting it? If not, then you need to.

  • Will firewire connector support thunderbolt drive?

Trying to connect a thunderbolt drive to a firewire connector since 2007 iMac has no thunderbolt input. Can it be done?

With an adapter, yes. Actually, you'll need two: a Thunderbolt to FW 800 and then a FW 800 to FW 400 (your older Mac).

  • USB 3.0 vs Thunderbolt drive

Is a USB 3.0 external drive fast enough to use when editing with Final Cut Pro X, as compared to a Thunderbolt drive?
Presumable the Thunderbolt drive is faster, but for a serious amateur would a USB 3.0 drive be adequate?
I'm thinking of installing a 1144AM PCI-E 2.0 x4 Quad-Port USB 3.0 Raid for Mac  on my Mac Pro 2.66 Mhz Quad Core Intel Xeon.
    There are empty slots available.
    Cost is a factor.
    Thanks,
    Hal

I and many others use USB 2.0 with no problems!
It all depends what you want the speed for.
If you are doing 4 angle multicam with hi-def ProRes you will get dropped frames, but using proxy ProRes, no problems at all.
If you think it will speed up your editing you will probably be disappointed as it is the processor and RAM that limits the speed of rendering.

  • Possible Thunderbolt Drives??

I am looking at purchasing a Thunderbolt Drive for my Early 2011 15inch Macbook Pro, i want to be able to create three partitions on the drive, one for files etc, one for Time Machine and one for a bootable copy of my internal drive via a program such as SuperDuper. Is it possible to make a bootable backup using a Thunderbolt Drive?
Their are two drives i am looking at: LaCie 2TB Little Big Disk Thunderbolt Hard Drive and Seagate 3TB GoFlex Desk for Mac Thunderbolt Hard Drive.
I am wondering which drive is more reliable. I believe the Seagate is some sort of adapter drive/thunderbolt setup and am not sure on how fast the Thunderbolt connection would be compared to the LaCie drive? Another question is can i reformat the LaCie drive into three normal Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partitions for Time Machine and backup etc. I believe the LaCie comes preformated in a RAID setup, i am not wholly comfortable about what RAID is.
I think the LaCie might be the way to go, but i want to be able to set it up with the three partitions like i do with my current WD USB Hard Drive, that allows me to have a bootable partition and Time Machine partition and a general file partition.
Any ideas, help and info would be great!!!!

I've been buying LaCie drives for years and have always been happy with them - in fact, I have a seven-year-old 250GB that is still daisy-chained to my 1 and 2 terabyte G-Drives. Newer WD drives, for some reason, don't seem to get along well with Macs - I see people posting here on a weekly basis having problems with external WD drives and with such new technology... well, I'd just go with the LaCie.
And, yes, you can partition it just as you have your current WD drive. It will just be so much faster.
