2 usb drives and an AEBS...

It just keeps getting worse, if its not one thing, its another! I have 2 usb external drives hooked up to the AEBS with a usb hub, worked fine since Monday (other than being slow as molasses) both drives always showed up under SHARED in Finder. Now today they seem to be taking turns showing in finder with every power cycle. I can't get them to show up at the same time. They litterally take turns every time i power cycle the AEBS - any ideas?

thanks for the reply - i have 2 of the same hubs so i swapped it out and still the same thing.
its not really a big deal, as i can hook it up to my other computer and have access to it that way. (well hopefully anyways..
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6009740#6009740 )
My problem is that the setup worked fine for almost a full week, and then suddenly stopped. I even did a hard reset and its still alternating between the 2 drives... so i guess i am wondering if i may have burnt out part of the AEBS or something??

You can format the drive using ExFAT or you can format the drive NTFS then use third-party software on the Mac to enable writing to it: NTFS 11.2.443.

trying to figured something out with Automator
    Thanks

Automator, as you have probably figured out, does not have an action to specifically syncronize files found in two different locations.
If you are only moving files one way at any one time then you can piece together the following actions to do the job:
    1) Find Finder Items (options for where to look and what to look for - multiple whose criteria are possible
    2) View Results - good idea for seeing what is going on with the various selections you might want to use in step 1
    3) Copy Finder Items - if you are copying to the Flashdisk you need to have it connected to select it in this step
You should build two of these, one for the computer -> flashdisk and one for the flashdisk -> computer activities.
Syncronizing both ways at the same time is much more problematic with Automator and if you are transferring files two directions within the same day I am not sure this set of actions will work.

  • I just want to mount my external USB drive (connected to AEBS)!!

I'm sure there's a post out there, but I have yet to find it after repeated searches for this topic. I've got to be missing something very very simple. I'll try to be complete on the set-up, please let me know if I've missed any configuration...
MacAlly FW/USB 2.0 enclosure, connected via USB (powered) hub to AEBS. AEBS is running 7.4.1. I can "see" the drive under the "Disks" option in the Airport Utility:
    http://images46.fotki.com/v1506/photos/4/48510/325829/disk1-vi.jpg
However, I can't seem to mount/access the disk. (Yes I do have Finder->Prefs->Show Items:Servers checked)
The disk will mount when connected directly to my MBP via FW:
    http://images43.fotki.com/v1505/photos/4/48510/325829/DISK4-vi.jpg
I believe I have FileSharing correctly configured (I've since changed from AE pass to disk password):

Lastly, my AEBS (named "office") does appear under the SHARED tab, and allows me to connect using my disk password. However, there's nothing there...?

I must be missing something very easy, feels like I've almost got it! Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    Andy

Andy, your post did not indicate how your drive was formatted.
AEBS wants to see a drive format of HFS+. FAT32 should work as well.
Might be something to check if you have not already done so.

  • USB Drive and iPod do not show up on desktop

    Hello,
I put the computer to sleep when I'm going to be away for awhile and overnight. When I come back and wake it, my USB drive does not appear on the desktop. I have to restart the iMac to get it to come back.
Also, when I plug my iPod in, iTunes updates it and then within 10 minutes, the icon does not show on the desktop but I can see the iPod in iTunes.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Brad

I did run the hardware test and everything passed.
For about 3 hours last night, everything was working fine. This morning the USB drive icon is there but not the iPod. I think I will try the OS reinstall but not for about a week. I will be out of town all next week and can't get to it before I leave.
Something may have gone wacky while loading some application. A couple of the suspects would be Adobe Lightroom beta 4 or Google Earth. This issue only started within the last 5 days or so and I think those are the only applications I've loaded in that time.
Thanks for the help in eliminating some of the culprits. I think the OS install should fix. If not, it may be time to have Apple take a look.

  • How to copy a networked TimeMachine backup to a USB drive and restore from it?

    Hi,
I backup my MacBook Air with TimeMachine to my QNAP NAS which offers a TimeMachine backup service and I can restore data from it OK.
Working in IT, and being a bit paranoid about important data loss, I am concerned that if I was robbed or my house burnt down I would most likely lose both the MacBook and the TimeMachine Backup on my NAS :-(
To protect against this I have backup my (linux based) NAS to an external drive that I keep offsite. This drive is encrypted to keep my data secure with a Linux form of encryption (cryptsetup) and hence can't be plugged into a MacBook to try and restore from it - I doubt this would work either as the TimeMachine data is not located in the root of the drive.
So what I have done to test my restore process is to mount the encrypted NAS backup that include the TimeMachine backup folders on a Linux machine and then copy the TimeMachine data to the root of an HFS+ formatted external USB drive.
But, now I am stuck as how to try and restore something from this to my MacBook to see if the copy of the TimeMachine backup is good. If I press the Alt key on the TimeMachine icon, I can select an alternate backup device and when I enter TimeMachine to browse the data, I can browse the structure but there is no option to go back in time !! It seems like it is not possible to restore from this copy of the TimeMachine backup.
Does anyone know if this should be possible, and if so, what am I doing wrong here?
    Rgds
    Gary

For anyone else that may be in a similar situation, I can confirm that this does actually work.
I am unsure why I was not able to mount the original sparseimage that I copied to the USB drive before, but I have gone through the entire process again and I could successfully mount the TM sparseimage onto my MacBook and restore files from within it using TimeMachine to my Mac.
This is a Disaster Recovery solution only needed for if both my NAS and Macbook get stolen or damaged so I am happy with this solution for now.
I will try the restore process several more times from my monthly backups to reassure myself that the first failure to mount the sparse image was an anomaly.
This is the process that I have tested:
Configure MacBook to backup to TimeMachine Service running on QNAP NAS device.
Perform regular backup of QNAP NAS Device (Linux) including the TimeMachine backup data to an external USB drive with encryption enabled and store this device safely off-site
In time of loss of both NAS and MacBook, Time Machine data can be recovered to another Mac without the need of the NAS  using the following process:
Mount the external drive containing the backup of the NAS filesystem (ext4) which is encrypted onto a Linux host so it is readable - use the cryptsetup luksOpen options to access the encrypted filesystem then mount it.
Mount a n empty HFS+ formatted USB drive  on the Linux host
Use Rsync to copy the sparsebundle from the external NAS drive backup disk to the root of the USB Drive
Insert the HFS+ formatted USB containing the sparesbundle into the Mac's USB port
Double click the sparsebundle to mount it onto the Mac as a Volume
Using Alt button and the TimeMachine icon, select use alternative backup disk and you should see the TM backup in the sparsebundle
Enter TimeMachine and you should be able to restore any/all files
Hope that helps someone else and thanks to LaPastenague for pointing me in the direction of some of the answers I needed.

  • How to import m4a files in a USB drive and play them using iTune?

I have set the target directory of iTune to that USB drive, iTune just does not play them.  The length of the playing is awful long.  But in reality , they are merely 1min long reading when I listen to them using Window Media Player.

CS4 is much older than Windows 8. CS4 is meant to work on XP or Vista. Getting it to run on Windows 7 was a bit of an issue, so I'm pleasantly surprised to hear that you have CS4 running on Windows 8 at all.
It's also possible that a new camera records in a codec that such an old version of AE doesn't understand.
Make sure you're running the latest update to your version of AE. You're on version 9, so make sure you've run the Adobe After Effects CS4 9.0.3 Update (I would not suggest updating in the middle of a project though, as any changes might break AE). I would like to reiterate: you're running a version that was released six years ago on an operating system that was released much more recently. So, be careful how you tread. However, if you're not running 9.0.3, you're missing some bug fix updates that might solve your problem.
I would suggest upgrading to a newer version of AE.
That being said, as Dave mentions, CS4 and earlier had lots of trouble with MPEG-4 and other codecs that used interframe compression. Can you open the files in your version of Premiere? If so, you can use Premiere or the Adobe Media Encoder to convert to a proper intermediate codec. MOV is just a container format. QuickTime with the PNG codec will work in After Effects CS4 with no problems as will the other codecs Dave mentions.

  • I've bought an Apple USB drive, can I use this to load DVD's onto my computer so I only need to take the laptop on holiday with me rather than the USB drive and dvd's?

I've bought one of the Apple USB Superdrives thinking I could use it to load DVD's and save them onto my macbook pro, can anyone confirm if I can or can't do this?
If I can how do I do it?

Ok so any chance you could explain to me exactly what I need to do as I am absolutely clueless! I have a pile of DVD's, the USB superdrive and I've just downloaded the Handbrake software. When I put the DVD into the superdrive it starts playing, how do I get the series onto my computer?
If you haven't done this before, there are a few things you need to know. Sorry to say that this is not yet a simple, straightforward process like it is for music CDs. It helps to be a little geeky. You will need to make some choice about file format and file size if there is any chance that the imported discs will take up more space than you have available on your hard drive. If you are willing to learn, you should read the Handbrake User Guide and other articles on the Web about importing DVDs.
If you think this is starting to look complicated and you don't have time to figure it out before the trip, it might be easier to just bring the discs.
I have found that Handbrake can't import every disc. I think Mac DVD Ripper Pro is a much easier program to use, and it will import almost any DVD pretty reliably, but it costs money. For me it is worth it.
No matter which way you do it, it is going to take a lot of time to import a bunch of discs. It is going to take a lot more time than importing music CDs.

  • How to enable USB drive and CDwrite in Trusted Solaris.

    hello
I installed Trusted Solaris extensions in an X86 desktop and after that the cdwrite disappeared, the usb drive is not detected.
How do I enable the CD writer and the zip drive ? I have a file to be copied urgently, the USB drive doesn't work, the CD writer is not seen on the menu and internet / email is still not functional on this desktop
If there are some commands to be typed, please give me step by step instructions with command syntax and if there is a file to be altered please let me know where to find that file to be altered.
    Thank you.

    Hi Amit,
It's the same for Solaris. Take care about the line breaks in the document (sometimes one command seems to be two commands, it's one with parameters) and there is also a small bug: On page 6, step 5, it must read "Directory = topicmaps/example" (as printed in the screenshot).
    Hope it helps

  • Lenovo C255 - USB Drive and USB HDD is not recognized

    Hi
I am trying to attach SSD (Kingston SSDnow 300 -  60gb) drive to PC via bridge SATA-USB to USB 3 port, so i have "USB to ATA/ATAPI Bridge" stuff at installed devices and no HDD disks appeared at MyComputer . Still i have 2 disks at Device manager - my native HDD and this USB Drive.
The problem is that BIOS doesn't see any USB HDD. Excluded from the bootable device : USB HDD USB CDROM.
So how i can solve this issue ?

    Hi
I will try to help you buddy.
    > When it is started is says "Insert system disk in drive. Press any key when ready
This message appeared on my notebook after the HDD has died.
I had to replace the HDD and to install the OS again.
I assume its the same problem with your notebook. The HDD is not present or not recognized and you have to install a compatible HDD to get the OS running.
I have googled a little bit and found out that this notebook was delivered with the 10GB Toshiba MK1016GAP HDD. It supports the ATA-2/ATA-3/ATA-4/ATA-5 interface.
Please note that many BIOS have an HDD size limitation. This means that not all HDD sizes are supported! I presume a 20GB should be compatible but this is only my own opinion
    > How can I change my BIOS so that the HDD is recognized?
The BIOS cannot be changed apart from the update (check Toshiba driver page -> Archive -> Satellite Archive).
But vary important is that you will use a compatible HDD.
    > Can anybody help me with the recovery CD?
Dont know if you will be able to order this CD from the authorized service provider in your country because the notebook is really an oldie. But you should ask the guys.
What you could is to install the OS from the Microsoft CD and then could install some necessary drivers.
    Greetings

In order for me to provide the link to the wireless card driver you need, please do the following...
Go to the device manager, find the Other Devices category, and click on the Network Controller needing drivers.
Then click on the Details tab at the top of the network controller window.
Now you see a Property drop down list and it is defaulted to Device Description.
Drop down on that and select the second item on the list (Hardware ID's).

  • USB Drives and Trash

I do not want to have things deleted from USB drives go to the trash. Is there a way to tell finder not to use trash with removable drives? Or better yet, just to say only use it with the main drive?

I am not sure, but when you trash files from a USB device (like a thumbdrive) even though they appear in the Trash Can, they are not actually moved to your system's trash - they are in a .Trashes folder on the USB device itself.
Try this test - put something from your USB device in the trash, but don't dump the trash. You should be able to see it in the Trash can's directory. Now remove the device (without dumping the trash) and check the Trash can again. The files are gone. Plug it back in and they'll again be in the trash can. (This is at least the case for a Thumbdrive. I haven't tested it with a USB external drive, yet).
To me, this shows the Trash lives on the USB device. So if you are worried that using the Trash will move files to the host machine this seems to show that the actual file is not moved to the host's trash. (Does anyone know for sure whether this is true?)

  • Shenanigans with new USB drive and Time Capsule

It is probably best explained by consulting attached screen grabs (moderator: these are GIFs with filesizes 24K and 32K).
Drive: STUFF has been attached to TC for a while
Drive: Stuff 2 is a relatively new addition (old drive whacked into a USB drive container) and attached to TC
Image e01.gif shows what happens soon after powering up Stuff 2 with error message "The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "Stuff 2" cannot be found."
Possibly I have mucked up some setting somewhere or maybe used wrong format on Stuff 2?
Nonetheless after a while (possibly 5 minutes maybe more or less?) I try to access Stuff 2 and BONGO! It mounts fine and dandy (see e02.gif)
All images have (I hope) been suitably redacted.

  • Mac Mini, WD Mirror Edition USB drive and HD (720p) movies

    Hello,
I edit my vacation movies and render these in 720p thinking I will watch these on my Mac Mini connected to my HD tv. This works superbly, however, these movies takes quite a lot of space, so I also have a Western Digital Mirror Edition external USB drive to store them on. This is where the issues start.
When playing back from this disk, using VLC, the sound is choppy, seems like the image is less choppy. When I put the files on the internal drive there are no such issues.
I have a fresh Leopard install, and the USB drive is pretty new. There are no strange messages in the console logs that indicate a problem, but I can't imagine the files I play are too much for USB to handle.
Anyone have any ideas I can try?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I suspect the main issue you have is with the relatively poor data streaming performance of USB. While in theory, USB2.0 is faster than Firewire 400, in reality, USB can only manage those faster speeds in bursts, making FW much faster and more reliable for sustained data. If the files are saved as HD video, then I would think you're getting close to, or have surpassed, the capabilities of the drive to stream that data fast enough for smooth playback.
The solution would either be to switch to a FW drive, or to export your movies to .mp4 file format which can be played back via quicktime or Front Row. Files of that sort are compressed and thus are smaller, meaning lower data streaming overhead.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like you have been unplugging these before ejecting them. To eject something, click on Finder at the lower left of your display. In the Finder window, you will see your USB device with a symbol to the right that looks like a triangle with a line under it. Click on this symbol to eject the device, and once the icon has disappeared from the desktop and the drive has spun down, you can safely turn off the device and unplug it.
    Hope this helps!
