2 users on the same computer.  Full iTunes shows up on only one

There are 2 users on this computer.  Only the iTune downloads appear on one.  How can I get the full iTunes library on the other?

Hey there IamSwings,
It sounds like you would like to share your iTunes library between 2 different users on the same computer. I found this article for you that should help you accomplish that named:
iTunes: How to share music between different user accounts on a single computer
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1203
If you're using Windows, follow these steps:
Quit iTunes.
Locate your iTunes Media folder. (This folder may be named iTunes Music if you created your iTunes library in iTunes 9 or earlier). By default, it's in these locations:
Windows XP and Windows 2000: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes
Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: \Users\username\Music\iTunes
Note: The Windows version of iTunes doesn't copy all the music you add to your iTunes library to your iTunes Media folder. To copy the Music in your library to your iTunes Media Folder (if you have enough hard drive space), choose Consolidate Library from File > Library > Organize.
Drag the iTunes Media folder to a public location. You can use one of these public folders:
Windows XP and Windows 2000: \Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music
Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: \Users\Public\Public Music
Important: Don't move the iTunes folder, the iTunes library file, or the iTunes library.xml file.
Open iTunes.
Choose Edit > Preferences.
Click Advanced.
Click the Change button.
In the Change Music Folder Location dialog, navigate to your iTunes Media folder.
Click OK.
Repeat these steps for each user that you want to share music with. If multiple users on your computer are storing music in the same public folder, duplicate song files may appear if a user imports music from a CD that another user already imported.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Sterling

Thank you Joe - I tried this but it's only showing a teensy amount of music - the stuff on the second users account as opposed to the giagntic library on the 'main' account. I actually went to a Genius Bar and they said that apple doesn't really want you to share music between accounts - parents don't want to hear their kids music etc. Which seemed strange, but it might be the case sadly   Thanks anyway!

  • Sharing iTunes Library with two users on the same computer

I have all of my music stored on a external hard drive.
Both users on the same computer have the iTunes music location folder as the external hard drive. How do I see music added in one persons log-in? For example: I just purchased two albums under one log-in. The second log in can not see that music unless I manually add it.
Both Libraries point to the same file location.
I have over 40GB of music and I am looking for a way to manage my music files more effectively and I want to make sure that both log-ins have the same music.
I followed the instructions in article HT1203 from the apple support site.

The reason you are having this issue is because you have a shared library but private databases. What you have on the external drive is the collection of media files (library) that each account is set up to access as the source for media. What you have not done is set up a shared iTunes database, so each user accesses the same library differently.
When each user opens iTunes, iTunes access the database on their account (~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library). Therefore, their settings, views, playlists, etc., are private. When they add songs to their library only their database file is updated to reflect those additions; simply having files in the music folder does not mean that iTunes will recognize them, hence the reason iTunes asked you if you want to move the file to the trash when you delete it from your library.
The confusion here is the double use of the term library. The contents of you music folder most definitely constitutes your media library, as it is the collection of your media files. What you see as your library in iTunes is not your library but, for the most part, the content stored in a database table maintained by iTunes in the iTunes Library file in your iTunes folder. iTunes does not access your actual media files unless it is absolutely necessary. The general assumption is that what is shown in your iTunes “library” will actually mirror what is in your music folder.
So the missing step in your setup would be to switch to the account that has the most current iTunes library—that is the one reflects the actual contents of your music folder as of now—and follow this procedure.
    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Move the iTunes folder to the Shared folder (./Users/Shared).
    3. Launch iTunes, but immediately hold the option key to invoke the Choose Library window.
    4. Select the database (iTunes Library file) now located in the shared folder.
    5. If you do not see your content, go to iTunes’ preferences and reset the location of the music folder to the external drive.
    6. In the other accounts, re-launch iTunes and change the library according to steps 3 and 4.
Now all users will have access to the same iTunes database as well as the shared library. The downside of this is that each user will have full access privileges. If you have iTunes 8, then to avoid the disadvantages that come with this type of set up, see [this thread|http://forums.macworld.com/thread/105366?tstart=0] over at Macworld.

  • Sharing itunes library with all users on the same computer

I am trying to share the itunes library with 4 users on the same computer. Please tell me how.

I've been trying to find a way to do this easily as well. It would be good if you could set iTunes to use the "All User" documents folder instead of the My Documents folder for the storing the main library and just use the My Documents Folder for individual playlists.
Follow the instructions in the link provided by Mimico Kid.
** It is not important that the shared folder is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music. It can be any shared folder on the PC. On mine it's H:\iTunes as I don't have the space on the C: drive.
When you've done that make sure that your Adminstrator account's copy of iTunes shows the Library, Playlists and Album art as you want the all the users to see them.
Then copy all of the remaining files from the Administrator Accounts iTunes folder into every other users iTunes folder.
    ** C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Documents\My Music\iTunes
If any user adds songs or modifies playlists the administrator will need to log on and copy the files from that users iTunes folder to everyone elses.
This might be a slightly cumbersome way around the problem but it works for me. It has the disadvantage or advantage whichever way you look at it that every User will see an identical view with identical playlists.

  • How do I share one itunes account between two users on the same computer

How do I share one itunes account between two users on the same computer without taking up twice as much space on my hard drive?

You would need to move the itunes folder to a location that both users have permissions to access such as the Shared folder or any folder on the root level of the macintosh HD.
You can find instructions here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203 This method allows you to share the content without sharing the same library.

  • What is the best way to share a iTunes library between 5 users on the same computer?

What is the best way to share a iTunes library between 5 users on the same computer?
Currently I have a common itunes library in a shared folder that each user is linked to.  The problem is that when one user adds music to the shared file, it does not automaticaly appear to other users when they open their iTunes.  They have to go to the shared library and select the new music in order to make it visable in their iTunes.
Would iTunes file shareing fix this problem?
    Thanks

Rick, are you saying that if you try to share a folder outside of home and use sharepoints, then the other mac wont prompt you to log in? Have you tried that? It is hard to believe that is the case
I am sort of saying that. Have you tried it? I know it's hard to believe, but you really need to help us out by trying some steps that you don't believe.
We can't see what your exact situation is. We sort of know what's worked for us out here. Just trying to help you get this going in less than 24 hours!
Sharepoints manages the samba configuration file. It's free software that puts a pretty face on an otherwise cumbersome config file.
    Give it a shot.
windows will not prompt for passwords, I have tried this with multiple computer at home for both vista and xp
As I stated. You will not get prompted on windows, if you have set up sharing in an insecure fashion. You are not using a secured sharing situation.
    No argument with your statement.

  • How can I get iTunes to update play counts and file additions between users on the same computer?

I have placed my iTunes library in /Users/Shared/iTunes along with iTunes Music Library.XML
When I open iTunes, all the music is displayed correctly with playcounts etc...
The problem is, when a playcount or album info is updated it does not carry over to the other user on the same computer. The same with adding new files to the iTunes library...
How can I get iTunes to auto-update between users?
    Thanks

I understand how to do that, I was looking to share all fodlers or a bunch of folders.  I found out how to do it.

    Hi there,
First..I am new to this forum and find the information provided to be very helpful... I had followed the iTunes link above to enable sharing between users in the same computer but it appears to be working on partially. What setup am I looking for ?
    1. We have an iMac (Snow Leopard) with 1 Adult ID and 2 children IDs
    2. The iTunes music folder is stored in a Shared public folder where the Adult ID has read/write access and the 2 kids with read-only access (so that they don't accidently delete songs...:-)
    3. The iTunes on the Adult ID has the access to purchase songs. The kids have no acccess to buy songs
    4. All songs, podcasts to be visible to all users
    What has happened ?
    1. I am able to make the base of songs visible to all users
    2. However when a song is purchased by the adult account ..it is not visible to the kids account ..:-{
    3. The same thing occurs when a song is imported from a CD
    4. When a new playlist is created by the Adult account it is not visible to the kids account ..:-(
How can I make changes made by the Adult be made visible to the kids without having the need to constant add music files or libraries for each kid..?
    Thanks in advance..

I have windows 8.1 and cannot access itunes store even creating a new apple id. With other users on the same computer I can access itunes store. How can I solve this?

i had the same problem before using a fresh install of Windows 8.1.  I have resolved this issue by running the program compatibility wizard.  This I did by right-clicking on the iTunes icon in the desktop, selecting Troubleshoot compatibility, waited for it to detect compatibility issues and when presented with the following options: 1.) Try recommended settings; 2.) Troubleshoot program, I chose the latter.  When asked what problems I noticed, I checked the following: "The program worked in earlier versions of Windows but won't install or run" and "The program requires additional permission"
After that, it tired to resolve the issue, and provided the necessary settings to run iTunes.  Now it's running flawlessly.  I have Avast anti-virus installed though.

  • Can more than one user on the same computer access an itunes music library

I want to be able to access the same itunes music library from to different user on the same computer so either one of us when we log on the computer can open up Itunes and access the same songs. Is it possible?

Yes this is possiable using the "Share" feature in iTunes. You just have to consolidate your library and then move the "iTUnes Music" folder to your share folder. A step by step detailed instructions on how to set this up can be found here. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93195

  • TS2972 is it possible to use home sharing between two users on the same computer?

My wife and I have itunes accounts and want to be able to share music we have each bought on our accounts. We have tried setting up the home sharing on our PC but it doesn't show up on the screen. Can anyone please help?

"Is it possible to use home sharing between two users on the same computer?"
No. Home sharing is used to connect two running instances of iTunes across a network. When you switch users on the computer all applications running on the other profile are suspended.
You can however share your respective media folders so that they are visible in either profile and then copy over any content that you want, or you could create a single joint library which you use when either user is logged in.

  • "multiple users" on the same computer

I'd like to access the same project with different users on the same computer.
Getting the permissions setup for the folders and files was not a problem.
    But ... FCPX is not "seeing" the projects and events created by the other user;
    1) They don't show up in the project window (of the new user) when he boots FCPX
    2) I can't seem to import the projects (their grayed out)
I need two seperate users to work on a projects using the same computer.
But I want each user to access the project from their own "user profile"
    Is that do-able?
If not I would at least like to re-import the same project
    from the other users account/profile.
    I hope that's clear

    Michael_North wrote:
    Right ...
In this case, the Projects and Events are NOT in the movies folder of user 1.
    They're on a separate drive ...
    On the same computer.
You'd think after the permissions are set up, that it would work.
I can understand that booting the program from users 2's profile
would leave FCPX unaware of the existence of the projects.
But there must be some way of re-importing the projects in the user 2's profile ... right?
There is no re-importing; it should just work. If both users have read/write access to drive, the events and projects should be accessible to FCP X. Are you sure the permissions are ok?
The easiest way to handle this situation is to check the box for "Ignore ownership on this volume" in the Finder: select the drive, choose Get Info, unlock, check. Of course, then all files in the volume will be fully accessible to any user of this mac, but if there are only 2 users, and you both know what you are doing, it will avoid loads of permission problems.
