2 users working simoltaneously with one iMac

I have an iMac with Snow leopard and a laptop with windows 7 installed both connected wirelessly to a network.
I want to log in to my iMac using my laptop without interfering with another user who is logged on with a different account. Are either VNC or ARD capable of doing so?
If not, what is the best way to connect the laptop's screen to the iMac as an external screen?
Laptop Model is Toshiba Satellite A100-914.

Not really, unless you mean as a PuTTY Unix command line user.
If you want a Rube Goldburg spit and bailing wire solution, then you install the Vine Server (aka OSXvnc) on the iMac.

On the iMac, enable Fast User Switching (System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Option). Now on the iMac keyboard you login as the user you wish to access remotely. You then start Vine Server using a port number besides 5900 (such as 5901). Now use Fast User Switching to go to the other account.
Now go to your Laptop and use a VNC client (UltraVNC, TightVNC, RealVNC, etc....) and connect to the iMac port 5901. In theory you should be seeing the desktop of the hidden user.
However, I have heard that this is not an ideal solution, so do not be surprised if there are issues.

Do you mean so that you can use this setup to give the one and only one iMac user 2 screens they can use? I don't think so. If the other system was a Mac, you could use "Screen Recycler" from the author of JollysFastVNC.
Or do you mean so that you can use the iMac keyboard and mouse so it can control both the iMac and the laptop while they are sitting side-by-side? Then you use Synergy <http://synergy.sourceforge.net/>
Or do you mean as a physical way of attaching a second monitor, keyboard and mouse to get a 2nd concurrent iMac user? No I don't think so.

You need to turn on Printer Sharing on both the PC and OS X. I can't help you on Vista but in OS X it's System Preferences - Sharing - check the Printer Sharing box.

Check out the articles below to troubleshoot your issues with getting a proper connection with Wi-FI. Try creating a new Network Location and join your network to see if you can get on that way.

Thanks planb77. Your instructions worked but I had to do a little more than you stated. I did not realize that transferring files to a new computer was not enough. When the iPod synced I was told I needed to "authorize" my new computer to get my iTunes purchases to sync to the iPod. So after the initial sync, I ejected and disconnected the iPod, went into the iTunes store, set up "home sharing" and then authorized the new computer. When that was done I reconnected the iPod and was able to sync all my books and music. The only thing I couldn't do was rename the iPod as iTunes never asked me to. Is there a way to rename it after it has been set by iTunes as "owner's iPod"?

I am new to the Mac world and bought an IMAC with Iphoto08. My main reason was for printing photos and using the great graphics of an IMAC. But, I have no printer as of yet because I don't know which printer would work best with the IMAC. Please helppppppp

The 88+ is a very good inexpensive printer ..... it is temporarily "out of stock", but press the "Notify Me" button on the web page. You will also need a printer cable sold separately, but which Epson lists when you are able to order the printer.
Also check their ink jet photo-type print papers. (I do not work for Epson .... but I've used their products for years and never had any problems). I know of two instances where the printers were duds, but Customer Service replaced them without a hassle.

Magic Trackpad works with one iMac ..not another?

I have both an earlier Intel iMac and a 27", i5 iMac .. the Magic trackpad is a wonder. I love it, but I have lost contact with my 27" ... there seems to be nothing I can do for it to make contact?! I've done all sorts of fixes, but neither Bluetooth nor the trackpad window in the Sys. Prefs will see it.
I have read references to people saying; "Make it a favorite." I do not know what that means, nor how to do it. I was just going to buy another Trackpad, but this works fine with my intel iMac. As soon as I walk in the other room - I can use it.

Jim,
The trackpad can be paired with multiple machines but Connected to only one. When it's connected the other machine will ignore it and even refuse to pair.
If the macs are in seperate rooms at least 33 ft way you can do it by powering off the trackpad (this will disconnect from mac1), walk to the other room and power on. Mac2 should grab it. If your too close it's possible Mac 1 will grab it again.

Recently bought new printer. All works fine with one OSX user. However, cannot print anything on other OSX user, including cannot print Adobe PDFs or to new printer. Puzzling!

I recently bought a new HP printer. I was on an admin user when I installed it. All works fine with this admin account/user. I can print to the HP, print to Adobe PDFs.
However, when I then go over to another user account, I cannot print *anything*. I cannot print to Adobe PDF, cannot print to the new HP. If I try to print an excel file, it says "cannot communicate with the printer" along with some useless suggestions. If I try to print a page on FireFox, nothing happens. That is, sure I get the usual dialog box, click the appropriate choice of printer, click the number of copies, then click the OK button ... and nothing happens. No pdf process is started. Nothing is sent to the HP printer.
The fact that both printer options are not working suggests it is some kind of OS problem, not specific to either printer "device".

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm a bit leery of trying that. I would think that if the driver was not installed, then none of my users could use the printer. However, both admin users can use the new printer. The list of available printers is:
Adobe PDF 7.0
New HP Printer
I also used to have Old HP Printer, which I removed. Before, Users A, B and C could use both the Adobe PDF and the Old HP printers. Then, after I added the New HP Printer, it showed up in the list of printers for all three users. However, after I added the new printer, only the two admin accounts, users A and C, can actually print anything. Both users A and C can use the Adobe PDF printer AND the New HP Printer. But I get error messages with user B, for both the Adobe PDF printer and the New HP Printer.

How to get a Canon MP830 on a TC to work again with my iMac?

I have a Canon MP830 attached to my Time Capsule and it has worked fine for 18 months. My iMac is wired directly via ethernet cable into the TC. (And with the help of this forum I even managed to my XP and Vista PCs to wirelessly print to it).
Then the MP830 stopped working with my iMac (It works OK connected directly to the iMac). Yet the PCs on the network can still print to it (although it doesn't appear in Bonjour any more).
On the iMac I reset the print settings but cannot get it to add back the MP830 as a TC connected printer.
Using the Airport utility I checked that the TC sees the attached printer and it does. It actually shows as 2 printers; the MP830 and MP830 Fax. (Oddly when I change the names of these in the text box they do not stick, I'm sure it used to)
So the printer works fine and the Time Capsule knows it has a printer attached but my iMac can't "see it" I tried all the things suggested in the forums; combinations of power down/reboot TC, turn off/on printer, mapping using IP address, update printer drivers etc, but no luck. I went wireless on the iMac - that didn't make a difference. I even went back to the previous TC firmware (7.3.2) from latest (7.4.1) to see if that made a difference.
Any suggestions on things to try next would be welcomed, other than buying a real wireless printer!

i have a new time capsule 2gb, set up as a sole wireless router in my network. My macbook pro works fine with it but it needs about 3 hours for copying 40 gigabyte of data to the time capsule. Yesterday a friend came over with her macbook and was able to copy the same amount in about 50 minutes. I can't figure out any difference in the two systems. Can you help?

You might try measuring the signal and noise levels that each Mac sees using these instructions:

One possible explanation might be that your Mac has a metal case while the other may have a plastic case.

it will work. Scrolling works with Leopard. +Momentum Scrolling+ makes the scroll continue a bit after you stop the motion with your finger, like the action has "momentum." Snow Leopard is required for that feature to work.

I have just purchased an imac which I am very happy with. In our household we also have two iphones (one mine and one husbands) and one ipod (my sons). We all have individual itunes accounts set up on our previous computer (not a mac). We have sepereate apps and music, although there may be the odd occasion where we would like to share a song (if this is possible) across devices.
I am just wondering the best way to manage these devices using the new imac. Should I create individual accounts to logon to the imac, then from within these launch our own itunes accounts and sync our devices with these. Or should I be using one version of itunes, logging on to this with our different itunes usernames and storing things in libraries.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am presuming that we cannot share downloaded apps and music between accounts because of the copyright issue,
Though I'm no copyright lawyer, as long as it's within a household, you can share content among users. Such sharing is, absent specific language preventing it not present in the iTunes Store terms of use, generally considered to be "personal use". So you can share apps and music amongst your users on your computer and with their devices. You just can't give any of that content to friends or relatives who don't live with you.
What I am not clear on, it making sure that this appears in each itunes account - is it easy to find the file storage folders that match the itunes accounts and what would these be?
The iTunes library and files are by default in a user's Home/Music folder. But you don't have to find the folder; in fact putting a file into the folder yourself won't add the file to iTunes. Just drag the file into the iTunes window. iTunes will copy it to the correct location.
