2 week old Thinkpad Yoga Finish Wearing off!

I've had my ThinkPad Yoga for 2 weeks. It has gone in and out of my Lenovo Laptop back about 4 times. The front two corners of the lid show wear and I think the paint is almost gone. How is this possible? I do not use the "Tent" mode.
I tried calling NewEgg where I purchased it, they recommended I called Lenovo.
I expect this after a year of use, not two weeks.  What do I do?
JIM

  • Thinkpad Yoga - screen wear when using the pen

I've been using penabled laptops for about 8 years now and bought a ThinkPad Yoga about 10 month ago.
The pen turned out to be disappointing - it's a lightweight job reminiscent of the pens they include with Samsung Note and like phablets rather tha a proper full size Wacom pen.
Just like other people I was also disappointed by the non removable plastic sheet protector on the screen in place of proper Gorilla glass screen cover.
But well, overall, apart from the awful touchpad, it was a decent laptop and I've been always happy with my previous Thinkpads, so I kept it.
Now, I'm using the pen a lot, incliding for scrolling. It turned out that the nib is not replaceable and that the plastic sheet protector on the screen is not hard enough to resist wear from the included pen - after 10 month of use it's pretty badly worn, especially in the scrolling area on the right.
I've never had this issue with my previous penabled tablets, even after 3-4 years of use, so I must say I'm rather disapponted at Lenovo selling this as a penabled laptop when the screen could not stand up to daily use with the included pen.
Does anyone else have this issue? Should I send it back to Lenovo to get the protective layer replaced while it's still under warranty?

I had this very problem with my Yoga S1 display screen. The anti-glare foil/protector became scratched by the digitizer pen. After reading a bunch of posts about removing this film layer, it looked easy enough, so I decided to JUST DO IT.  My steps:
I grabbed a sharp razor blade and started in the corner where the "Lenovo" logo is placed (bottom left). Very gently, I slid the blade edge under the film being careful not to dig, pry, or lift the blade any more than necessary -- just keep is as flat as possible and glide slowly about 1/2" or so making an equilateral triangle shape. The corner of the film will lift up losing its adherence and, in my case, I experienced zero damage.
I elected to continue sliding the blade along all four edges only 1/8" or so deep - just to make sure that the film was lifted across the entire perimeter. No problems whatsoever - smooth as silk.
I went back to the starting corner and slid the blade a little further (approx. an inch) so that there would be a triangular section large enough for my fingers to grab without cracking or breaking the film layer.
I began pulling from that corner slowly and gently making sure that my other hand was resting on the glass as a brace. Note that you should pull level with the screen not upward. I did not use a blow dryer and, as it turned out, it wasn't necessary.
When I got to the point  where one edge of the film was about at the center of the short width, I started pulling down that side until I reached the opposite corner.
I then continued pulling lengthwise working from edge to edge, then center, always keeping my other hand pressing lightly on the display screen glass (for leverage). If you want to avoid palm prints, wear a soft glove or put a microfiber cloth under your hand.
In no time at all, the entire sheet of film was removed in one piece - no cracks, breaks, or other problems.
There was no glue residue on the glass, so I just took a microfiber cloth and rubbed it to a gorgeous shine.
I fired up the laptop and was amazed at the extra clarity and color -- and NO SCRATCHES!
Is there additional glare? Yes, of course, but I just tilt the screen to avoid it as I do with all my other devices.
I started working with the digitizer pen and, thus far, I see no evidence that it will scratch the screen surface which, I have been advised, is gorilla glass.
This entire process took less than 15 minutes. It has taken me longer than that to write it up!
I would be happy to answer any questions if there are any. Good luck!

  • Thinkpad Yoga Brightness turn off backlight

I have an "issue" with my Yoga.
It used to be that when I turned down brightness completely the screen would go black because there was no more backlight at all.
However it now seems that even completely turned down there is still some backlight left meaning i can't turn off the screen completely.
I really like being able to turn off the screen quickly, for example to save battery when rendering or when I leave the laptop unatended and don't want people to see what im working on.
Is there any way to get the old behaviour back?
Not quite sure what caused the change in but im guessing some kind of driver update...
    Running Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit

Usually Intel graphics drivers don't have "backlight off" as the lowest setting, so in principle, this was a 'bug' that was 'fixed'.
You could roll back your graphics driver and see if it brings back this functionality. I'd just pin something like LCDoff to the taskbar though.

  • Thinkpad Yoga S1 Runs off AC but won't charge the battery

I have recently purchased an S1, which is now having an issue that I can't seem to resolve on my own. The laptop works (almost) perfectly on A/C, but doesn't charge the battery. I noticed yesterday the battery was low (which was surprising, because I had only recently unplugged it) - so I plugged it in to charge. At which point, the battery icon in the system tray stated "8% (plugged in, not charging).I've tried the following to fix this: 1) Leaving it plugged in overnight completely off. 2) Running the battery calibration (fails w/ unexpected error). 3) Tried turning off battery optimization (Option is removed in newer version of drivers, so NA to my issue). 4) Tried reinstalling the power management drivers anyway (even though I already had the newer version). 5) Holding down the power button for 30 seconds, both plugged in and not plugged in (suggestion from forum). 6) Holding down the reset button (pin reset on the mobo) for 30 seconds, both plugged in and not plugged in. 7) Charging from BIOS. 8) Letting the battery run down to 0% in BIOS, then rebooting on A/C (another forum suggestion).  Now I'm just at 0% plugged in and not charging. Previously I said the computer almost worked perfectly, the almost is that the CPU is stuck at ~800mhz, even with all power management turned off (including Speedstep in BIOS) and the power profile set to high performance. Can anyone think of anything else I can try before I give up and send this thing back? It was working perfectly for the last couple of weeks or so, including getting ~ 4, 5 hours of battery life, so unless the battery failed very suddenly I can't imagine why it would just start refusing to charge.

well I replaced the battery with another one I bought (exact same model for the battery SONY 45N1705, I was hoping I would get another battery version because I notice there is an update for the other battery revision that fixes issues with battery stopped charging. http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds001322. I forced the bios update from 1.07 to latest 1.24 using olydbg to skip the battery check. this did not help with anything relating to the battery. now I am stuck again where I was at the beginning..... im looking at buying a board replacement.... also I was looking at replacing the power supply but I check the voltage and the amps, and it is correctly matching what is written on the back of the laptop. still getting the 0% plugged in and charging.

  • My itouch 4 is a week old and is randomly shutting off even when fully charged. Should I send it back? I'm a busy new mother and don't have time to tinker around trying to reset it and shouldn't have to since it is brand new???? What do you suggest?

My brand new ipod touch i bought last week is suddenly randomly shutting off. Its fully charged. I havent upgraded to 5 yet because ive read of problems with loosing apps and ive already added many paid apps. I havent backed them up to my pc yet because im a brand new mom and very busy. Same reason im hoping i dont have to tinker around with this problem myself... Its brand new??? My camera randomly went black yesterday but is fine today but now it keeps shutting off. Should I send it back? Please help?!?!

How hard is to Reset it?  A lot less hard than returning it.  Just hold down the On/off and Home buttons for atleast 10 seconds until the apple apears and then wait for it to reset.  If this doesn't work and you don't want to try restoring it, take it back to Apple.

  • SWSHARE folder empty on week-old W-series Thinkpad

    I have a week-old Thinkpad W530 that came with Windows 7 Professional.
Based on previous posts I know that the SWTOOLS folder (currently a hefty 6.25gb on my machine) holds many of the factory-loaded drivers and utilities.  I understand that the SWSHARE folder has a similar function.  From comments I've read it also appears to be used during a Recovery function.  (I have not created recovery media, BTW.)
But I just noticed my SWSHARE folder is completely empty.  Any ideas why that would be, or if it is anything to be concerned about? Everything seems to be working OK.  Can anyone give me an idea of the contents and size their SWSHARE folder -- especially someone with a fairly new W530 or W540?
    Thanks.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Screen Coating Wearing Off

After just under three weeks, the screen coating is wearing off. I would have been happier if they would not have had any coating on it at all. It's going to happen to everyone. Have you checked yours?

Just using your statement that it shouldn't rub off "in 3 weeks or 3 months." (i.e. if it takes 3 months to rub off, it'll always be under warranty). Unless it rubs off after the one-year warranty *on that particular serial number is up*, it's not an issue. And I'm fairly confident that if it lasts one year, it'll last two or three. The case I saw online suggested extreme usage, so it'll be interesting to see what the story is around Christmas time.

  • It's less than three weeks old and the paint.s already flaking off..

Imagine my embarassment! Here I am telling all my friends how great my new Macbook is---the high quality---and the mat finish "paint" is already flaking off to the left of the mouse pad. My God! It's like a bad used car! I may hate the Windows OS and love this MacBook but I had no idea that it had some sort of sprayed on finish. Now it looks like crap; it looks old, used and cheap.
And it's not even three weeks old!
Hmmm...has this happened to my three year old HP laptop? No. How about my four year old Gateway? No. Maybe my six month old Toshiba? Nope. Only my over priced MacBook.
Now...why am I posting here? Because I can't get the lame on line service request system to accept my request for assistance in any mode.
"Painted on quality"...worse than the blue screen of death.
Since I can't get any support---the phone number doesn't offer a choice for my problem---maybe I should drive an hour to the nearest Apple store---and stand outside showing everyone who comes by what a seventeen day old MacBook looks like.
    Cheesy and disapointing....never again!

Listen, it really is too bad that this has reportedly happened to your new machine. I am sure that if you take it to a certified apple technician they would send it away for you to be fixed or maybe replaced. I also have dealt with APPLE CARE on the phone and they have been great, in the past. Try to phone the apple care number again and talk to a real person, forget the menu. Having said all that, I still wish that my APPLE was made in USA, even though I would have to pay more, I would.

  • Is anyone else having the finish rub off of the keys on their macbook? I've had mine for about 6 months and several keys look like the finish is wearing through. I went to the local genius bar today and the techs said they'd never seen this before.

Some people have seen their aluminum uni-body discoloring due to body oils.  Go figure.
Normally putting anything over the keys/aluminum will hurt heat disspation, but you may need to use keyboard covers.
Or save up $500/year for new keyboards.
Neither is supposed to be a sarcastic answer.  Either one could end up being the solution.
    Good luck with it.

Sounds like a dead battery.  Try plugging it into a charger.

User troubleshooting is restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new. If you perform these steps and it still doesn't work, then make an appointment at the Apple Genius bar and have the hardware checked.

  • Help!  My Mac is 1 week old and shutting off! AND I'm in a foreign country.

Hello! My Macbook is just one week old and I have already had problems with it shutting off due to " Mac OS X quitting" or something rather. It also becomes very hot where the monitor and computer connect. I'm not exactly sure what is wrong. Do I need it replaced entirely or just a part. I'm in Seoul, Korea so I need to know exactly whats wrong. Thanks for you help

Does your computer not want to reboot? and when it finally does, you are left with less or no battery power, and a meesage pops up saying Mac os x quit unexpectedly....
Had absolutely the same problem. I called applecare, made me restart PMU, did not do anything. It's likely that its also not because you are closing the lid too quickly, that was not the problem with mine. The problem persisted so someone suggested to do an archive and install. The problem was gone. However, it starting having the random shutdown problem. Went into an apple store, and they exchanged the heat sink. I would recommend getting it checked out as this problem ended being a signal of something worse. Click the Macintosh HD icon, then click the Library icon, then click Logs. If you see an icon saying Panic.log, then you probably have the same problem as me. Go to an apple store and show them this panic.log icon and click it. They will probably do the same thing they did to my computer.
    Good luck, Sarah.
