2 wireless connections at the same time

Hi !
First, sorry for my english, i am french....(yeah i know i know....)
Let me explain my problem. I have at home a Macbook pro with Snow Leopard 10.6.7, a time capsule (1To) and a modem/router netgear. It's a big house so my Netgear modem/router in antoher room.
I would like to use my Time capsule only as an external hard drive (wireless) to have the maximum power of data transmission with the norm 802.11n. I know this norm don't have a lot of range ( 5 meters...)
How can i configure my time capsule to do that ?
Will i be able to connect at the same time (with my Macbook pro) to my time capsule (on 802.11n)  and keep my internet connection active ( 802.11 G) through my Netgear router ?
I want to do that just because my router Netgear is to far away from my macbook pro to use the  802.11n with time capsule. So if connect the time capsule to the netgear via ethernet, i loose a lot of power for the data transmission (too slow the see movie etc, backup copy etc..).
I hope you understand me and it will be very nice to you to help me.
Thanks !

Hi Tesserax
Thanks for the reply, sorry maybe I didn't explain my idea. I don't want to connect the Airport Express to the router well certainly not via a cable. I want to have the Airport Express basically be a hub for a printer and a couple of external hard drives and not be attached to a modem. I want to try and keep the current modem/router configuration I have, if possible. Therefore I'm asking whether I can have a wireless connection to the router for internet access and a separate connection to the Airport Express for the printer/hardrives. If this is not possible that's ok.
Thanks again

Can I turn off the wireless and use the wired connections at the same time?
This is to avoid transmission when I work without the need for wireless

Yes, you can. Just open the web interface of the router. On your browser type the IP address of your router, usually http://192.168.1.1 go to wireless tab and disable it.

  • 2 network connections at the same time

I have 2 network connections at the same time. One for network shares and one for internet. How can I decide which connection should be used for which service?

    David684,
Thanks for posting all of this.  I have a similar network question with a very similar setup that I am using with two interfaces. However, I am much less comfortable with the command line than you appear to be (although comfortable enough to crib little tweaks from the web and run them).
The real difference is the resources I'm after and it seems like more of a problem. In my case, I'm running my home wireless network and can connect at decent speeds, but I happen to live right across from campus where I am attending grad school and I'm picking up the school wifi network. Having direct access to this network, among other things, allows me to access library research journals and databases from home without constantly needing to authenticate. But it isn't nearly enough to accomodate all of my network needs. The key difference, then, is the fact that these come in the form of websites. But I want to access only library stuff over that we-fi connection and do everything else from the LAN.  I use an app called papers for research, which has a built in web browser to allow me to pull up articles and then save them. Would that help me by allowing me to have just that program use wi-fi? I am not sure if the app is using an embedded safari session or it's own home-rolled browser, or how to check in the first place (OR if that makes a difference as far as being able to route the app's traffic to that interface). Also, with all of that said, how could I find out the subnets over which to route this if what I'm going after is a far less tangible resource than an SMB share? I am guessing I need a different method or that none exist?
    Thanks

  • Can I use both Wifi and a Lan connection at the same time?

With me back in the dorms I have been limited to a slower connection than what I would like. Now we are able to use both Wifi and a Lan line so I was wondering to somewhat "double" my speed if there was any way to use both connections at the same time.
Now I know that you can have both plugged in at the same time, I guess what I'm asking is, is there a way that I could set programs to use one or the other? Or some kind of virtual desktop that is set to use the other connection or anything that would allow both be used at the same time.
Or am I just wishing for something that doesn't have any possible way to work?

You can use both at the same time, but not gor Internet access if that's what you're asking.
Now there is a thing called Link Aggregation, which combines a number of interfaces for speed/redundancy, but it really only works locally, and then only with ALL special equipment in the route, and most likely OSX Server involved.
    Sorry.

  • Wired and Wifi has to be connected at the same time to not be disconnected!

I work as a tester for WoW and for the past few months, I’ve had connection issues. I’ve had Comcast come out a few times and they are so eager to leave they look up the speed and say, “Oh you are good on speed” well I’m not. Every few mins I’m disconnected from the server. It’s not my computer and I’ve done every thing WoW suggested. The ONLY way I’m able to stay online for an hour is I have to have the wired and WiFi connected at the same time on my desktop. If you have any suggestions let me know.

I have posted this many, many times here. See if this helps you understand how this process works with regard to system sounds and screen rotation lock.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you are running iOS 5 or iOS 6, the system sound control is in the task bar at the bottom. Double tap the home button and swipe all the way to the right in the task bar to get to the speaker icon on the left side. Tap on that and the sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • Can I connect my Mac to two separate wireless networks at the same time?

Need some assistance with some advanced wireless networking please....
Upstairs I have a D-link wireless router connected to the internet and wired to a couple of PCs. Downstairs I have a minimac linked to my hifi via an airport express. I have bought a D-Link DWL-G122 usb wifi dongle.
So I want the mini mac to connect to the airport express on one wireless network (strong signal) and to be able to connect to the internet on another network (weak signal) via the usb wifi /router.
But the airport software and the d-link driver seem to conflict and both try to take control of the two wireless devices.
Is there any way round this to be able to run one mac with two wireless network devices at the same time?
    Thanks

While those with more experience may be able to correct me, I'm pretty sure that you can only connect to one wireless network at a time with your Mac Mini, unless D-Link provides their own proprietary software that bypasses the computer's Airport settings.
Using the AirPort hardware you can only connect to a single wireless network at any given time. However in this situation the 2 attempted connections are via USB and AirPort. Therefore this requires nothing special of the AirPort drivers or settings.
It does require that the Mac OS and applications have the capability to use either network connection (USB or AirPort) depending on what data they are trying to get. In general I understand how it is theoretically possible but I have no idea if you can configure OS X to do it.
...I believe one of the options when setting up the Airport Extreme Base Station is that you can extend a wireless network already in place.
True but the D-Link is not compatible with Apple's WDS therefore this is not possible in this situation.
If you have a newer Airport Extreme Base Station with a USB port on it...
FYI, every AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) has a USB port.
BTW, birky has indicated that he/she is using an AirPort Express (AX) not an AEBS.

  • I have a Macbook pro and a iMac and I can't seem to connect to the wireless internet at the same time. Please help.

Invariable on eof them will connect and the other one doesn;t. I have to constantly disconnect eth router and re-connect it for the computers to pick it up. I also sometimes get an error message that I am sharing the same IP address and i don't know how to change it. Please help!

Open the Network preference pane in System Preferences on each Mac. If necessary, click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the preference pane. Select the wireless connection from the list on the left. Click the "Advanced" button, and in the sheet that opens, select the "TCP/IP" tab. From the popup menu labeled "Configure IPv4," select "Using DHCP." Click OK to close the sheet, then click "Apply." Try again.

  • Can an airport express support wireless and wired connection at the same time

im wondering if i can use wireless and wired connection at the same time

The Ethernet port that the old AirPort Express has got is to connect the AirPort Express to your modem, not to connect another PC or Mac, so you can only connect wireless devices to the AirPort Express.
If you have the new AirPort Express, you can connect a wired PC or Mac and more wireless devices or computers at the same tiem

  • Can I set up wireless internet and a wireless printer at the same time?

I have an AirPort Express configured already which allows wireless access to the internet (as it is connected to my broadband router) but can I also configure it to allow wireless printer sharing at the same time?
I would appreciate an answer on this as I have been unable to determine it so far.
    Many thanks

The Express has a single Ethernet port, whereas, the Extreme has four would be one of most distinguishing feature differences. Obviously size differences would be #1. (ref: Identifying AirPort Hardware)
When connected directly another router, you have (effectively) two routers in series. In this configuration, the AirPort Express would need to be reconfigured as a bridge. This will allow the broadband router to provide both NAT & DHCP services for all the wired/wireless clients connected to either router.

  • Cannot stream to iTunes and join wireless internet at the same time

I have a home network with an Airport Extreme base station, and Airport Express connected to my home stereo and to my existing wireless network in client mode. I receive internet via a wireless signal throughout my apartment building. My laptop receives the signal via the built-in airport express card. Neither the Airport Extreme or Air Express are connected directly to the internet, since I only have a wireless signal in the building (no ethernet).
With Airport turned on the wireless internet signal appears as a list of networks alongside my own network.
I can't seem to get the settings right such that I can join my Home network and be connected to the internet at the same time, since I have to join either one or the other from the drop down list. Therefore, I can't sream music wirelessly from my laptop to my airport express and be connected to the internet at the same time.
Is there any way around this?

Leosia, Welcome to the discussion area!
Your Mac only has a single radio receiver therefore it can only join one wireless network at a time.

  • WRT54G & Comcast - Operating more than one wireless PC at the same time

First, I want to thank the many advisors and experts that contribute so freely to this knowledge base.  I have read the many insights into Comcast/cable modems.  Because to that I am able to connect one (1) laptop via wireless to my WRT54G which is attached to the cable modem from Comcast.  I had to use "MAC Cloning" to make this wireless connection work.  Happy days!
Problem:  When I try to bring a second laptop online via the WRT54G using wireless, the laptop seems to receive all the right information (ipcondig /all) but will not connect.  Internet Explorer presents the "standard error page" rather than my home page.  For example, I want to read my email via laptop #1 and have my wife read her email on laptop #2 - at the same using wireless.  Is this possible?
Question: Using the WRT54G and Comcast can I have two or more seperate wireless laptops connect to the Internet at the same time?  Note: I am NOT trying to connect the two (2) wireless laptops to each other.  Just a good old fashion connection to the Web via the Internet.
Are there other WRT54G owners with Comcast service that have this functionality?
(BTW - I am not trying to bash Comcast.  I am just unaware of a solution.)
    Thank you in advance.

Adjust the browser settings on the laptop where you don't have Internet...
Open an IE, click Tools >> Internet Options, then delete all files, cookies, history, forms...Goto "Connections", make sure Never Dial a Connection is checked, click on LAN Settings and make sure all the options are unchecked...Once you are done click on O.k...Close the IE and re-open it...
Yes, it is possible to read mails on both the laptops at the same time...Also it is possible to connect to Internet Wirelessly on multiple computers/laptops at the same time simultaneously...

  • Airport express and wireless internet at the same time???

    hello,
i recently replaced an airport express that broke. before i replaced it, my house was set-up with my macbook in one room, airport express in the living room and home-internet router in the office.
i dont remember how i did it, but i set it up so that i could be connected to the internet and airport express at the same time. right now, its one or the other. either connect to the airport and listen to music, or connect to the router and get internet...
now, i understand you can do this if u plug an ethernet into the airport express, but its in a different room than the router.
so somehow i need the router and airport to connect to each other wirelessly????????

Configure the AirPort Express (AX) using the instructions in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • Using two internet connections at the same time

Is there a way to setup my Mac to see both a wireless and a wired internet connection, so I can combine the speed of the the connections? If not within the computer, is there a way to do it some other way?

    Hi
You can have two connections on your machine one wireless one ethernet but you cannot combine the two for a greater connection , you need to use one or the other you cannot use both at the same time as one connection
