2 WRT54G's - which one to be main router, which one to be repeater?

I currently use a WRT54G v.3 router with one computer connected via wire and other devices accessing wifi.  Wifi signal is weak in various parts of the house and doesn't extend to the backyard.  I have another WRT54G router (ver 6) that I want to use as a repeater.
Based on research I've done, it sounds like the v.3 router is better suited to accommodate DD-WRT firmware, whereas if I try to do this with the ver 6 router, it is more sensitive and likely to be bricked.
Should I do the following:
- replace the v.3 main router with the ver 6 router as the one connected to the DSL and to the wired computer
- change the firmware on the v.3 router to DD-WRT and utilize this one as the bridge?
Is this the proper approach?  I strongly prefer not to purchase a dedicated repeater if I can use the 2nd router to do the job.  Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can try that if you don't wish to purchase an additional equipment like a Range Expander or an Access Point...

Below is some info i get about ports.
I tried to set DMZ on my main router to have full access to ported to access point upstair which is in the ip of 192.168.1.2 and the main router in the living room is the gateway router with the 192.168.1.1 ip.
I still cant see apple tv after i try the DMZ method.

These network ports are used by Apple TV for communications on your network.
TCP port 123 is used to communicate with a network time server.
TCP port 3689 is used to communicate with iTunes while using the iTunes Library Sharing feature.
UDP port 5353 is used by Apple TV for automatically finding computers with iTunes on your network using Bonjour.
TCP port 80 is used for communicating with podcast servers.
TCP port 80 and 443 are used for basic and secure communications with the iTunes Store via the Internet.
TCP port 53 is used for regular DNS.
These are well-known ports used by Apple products, like iTunes. If you can use all the features of iTunes, these ports are likely already open on your firewall or NAT router. Note: These ports may also used by other services such as YouTube and Flickr.

When the Apple TV is paired with a remote, it means only that remote can control it, when it's not paired any remote can control it. You will need a remote for each of your devices.

Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections. For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb. These terrible download speed really only affects the iPhones as my MacBook Pro usually gets the good speed no matter where it is. I don't believe there is anything wrong with my phone because if I am in the part of the house that uses just the extreme the download speeds on the iphone goes up to 50-75mb. As a note I have an AirPort Extreme on the top floor of my house (second floor) that's where my modem is located. On the first floor that's where one airport express is located. I also have another airport express in the basement that is accessed by my landlord. Any thoughts on how to fix this would be helpful.

It appears that your networking goals with the AirPort Express is to use it as a wireless Ethernet bridge instead of using it to extend the wireless range of your AirPort Extreme. The latter requires that the Express Wi-Fi radios be enabled.
If you intended to use the Express as a wireless bridge, you just need to reconfigure it to "Join a wireless" network instead of "Extend a wireless network."

In an extended network, the placement of the extending base station is critical as it can only extend the wireless network at the bandwidth at which it receives it.
Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details on optimal base station placement.

  • Connecting 2nd router, separate from main router

Hello.. I've been searching the forums for a bit and can't seem to find an answer to this, so I figured I'd start up a thread.. I have A WRT54G connected as the main wireless router in my house. Today I purchased the WRT600N with hopes of connecting it to the same internet connection as the WRT54G but as a completely separate router.. I've spent all day trying to configure it and get a connection with a different IP as the the first router but have yet to accomplish this.. I get to the point where I have a connection to the second router and it has its own IP and everything, but the internet doesn't work.. I was hoping someone could either help me with this or point me in the right direction to find a way of accomplishing this. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. Forgot one thing, not sure if it matters though.. The computer that is connected to the first router is a PC running XP Pro and the computer I'm trying to set up on the second router is a Macbook..

What do you mean with "completely separate router"? You cannot completely separate two routers if one hosts the internet connection. The internet connection of the second must run through the first. The LAN of the second can always access the LAN of the first. That's pretty much inevitable with these cheap routers.
Thus, to complete separate two routers/subnets you actually need three routers, one that hosts the internet connection and two connect to the first. Each of those two additional router LANs are then separated as long as the access to the first main router is well secured.
Unless you have very serious reasons to run two subnets I would always recommend a single LAN setup like this.
Other then that I have described possible two router setups here.
If you want to chain the two routers then you have to set them up like this:
    1. router
WAN - setup for your internet connection, e.g. PPPoE or DHCP.
    LAN IP 192.168.1.1
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    DHCP server enabled if required.
DHCP server address pool default 192.168.1.100-149
Check the Status tab of the 1. router to make sure that it has a working internet connection. Write down the DNS server addresses you find on the Status page.
    2. router
Internet port of the 2. router is connected to a LAN port of the 1. router. You can only make this wired connection AFTER you have configured the second router. Otherwise you may not be able to access the web interface.
    WAN - Static IP
    WAN IP 192.168.1.2
    WAN subnet 255.255.255.0
    WAN gateway 192.168.1.1
WAN DNS 1,2,3 enter either 192.168.1.1 or the DNS server addresses from above.
    LAN IP address 192.168.2.1
    LAN subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    DHCP server if required
You have the choice to set the DNS server IP addresses in the DHCP server if you like.
Don't forget to save the settings on the Setup page.
Once you have reconfigured the second router like this you can connect it to the first.
Make sure that the second router is on Gateway mode on the Advanced Routing tab.
This setup will separate the LAN of the second router from the first. This means you cannot access the LAN of the second router from a computer connected to the first router. However, anything connected to the second router is able to connect to anything connected to the first router. This is much all the separation you'll get with these routers.

  • WRT54G, Firmware Version: 8.00.2, Stops routing after a day, Requires Power Cycle to Work Properly

WRT54G, Firmware Version: 8.00.2, Stops routing after a day, requires a quick 10-15 second power cyc... work properly for a day or so before powering down again….
I was using for years the BEFW11S4 Model without any issues before it finally failed. Due to loyalty, I went out over a month ago to purchase the current model. The problems did not pop-up until month of December… The issue had me thinking at first was the internet connection…
Any advice on dealing with this issue… Is it a Software and/or Hardware? It appears to be a software related condition…
For those other WRT54G users that appear to be having similar issues, regardless of the firmware, it would appear we all seem to be facing the same condition of resolving the issue after a power cycle…
Is there anyone out there that has already resolved this issue (e.g. Configuration changes)? Does anyone have input that Linksys is actively working on this issue?
Although I am sure we will find a solution, having to cycle the power is a bit disappointing since my older model had no such flaws with my current internet connection…
Thanks for the support out there….

If you have an Intel wireless card you can try this.  I came across this link on the forum a days ago and it seems to help.  The problem is that my problem was much more intermittent than some people are experiencing.  It mainly seemed to appear when undocked the computer or if there was a power outage during the day.  I would be interested to see if it works for you or if I'm just chasing my tail.  I've seen other suggestions for changing the thresholds in the router which may be related.

  • Main Wrapper, Container and background-image repeat problem-and Footer :-)

    Hi everyone,
First off, i tried almost every idea i could get to solve this on my own but now im...aaa...
Well, the problem is i have a main wrapper with a background image repeat. A header, menu, body container - which has a left column and right column. I want that main wrapper, body container and both of the columns to grow auto according to content. I tried the height:100%. When i float the columns the text from left column spills over on to the footer. The left column also does not autogrow towards the footer?! I was able to set the footer at the bottom which i want it to remain at the bottom of the main wrapper, but the main wrapper and the columns do not grow automatically...I guess it has something to do with float and the clear properties but what???

  • Have 320n connected to main router issues

I have kind of successfully connected my Wag320n to my main router an Optus Sagem router, they are connected using powerline ethernet adaptors with wireless available on both although I can't access the Wag320n menu wirelessly.
The Wag320n is set up with DHCP of, NAT and firewall of, Static IP address inside the range of the main modem and same subnet, I left the drop down menu at PPOA (not sure about that one if it is the right setting to have), name and password are the same as the main modem for connecting to internet.  I have both the modems connected through lan port 4
Now the problem I have is that if I tyr to connect and to the lan port 1 of the Wag320n the led goes red and stays red, I'm guessing this isn't supposed to happen but then I end up with only 2 lan ports to use for tv, media players etc
Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi belveder, better to isolate this first. You may try using different ethernet port or use another cable. Make sure as well that the WAG320N is configured correctly, you can verify the correct settings from your ISP. This link may help you properly cascade the two devices. The red led light is not normal, you should see green to indicate a successful connection. If all fails, updating the firmware will also help. You can follow this link.

  • Airport Extreme that I was using as an extender now refuses to work as a main router.

Recently I changed to Fibre Broadband in Singapore.  Because the connection for Fibre was located near the front door wifi was very very weak in my rooms.  This is what I did.
    1.  Connected my Airport Express (2nd Gen) to my "nucleus connect" Fibre modem by Ethernet.
    2.  Use my Airport Extreme (4th Gen) as extender by connecting wirelessly.
The speed that I was getting 30 Mbps.  I should be receiving about 70 - 100 Mbps.
I decided to switch things around by using my Airport Extreme as the Main Router followed by using Airport Express as Extender.  I did the reset, even set it to factory defaults and hard resetting.  But am totally unable to connect my Airport Extreme to my Fibre Modem.  It keeps flashing amber after trying to set it up.  Router is unable to get an IP Address.
Now I have gone back to my original configuration.  Airport extreme in this case as no issues working as an extender but somehow is not able to work as the main router anymore.
    Please help.
    Thank you.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to hit 100Mbps.
To get speed up you need ethernet..
Could not connect to Airport Extreme by Ethernet as my wife insisted she did not want wires dangling around the living room.
Ethernet should be properly installed in the walls.
You will simply not get better speed without using ethernet.. as the one and only reliable method of connection..
You may get improvement using AC wireless bridge equipment.. that actually will cost you more than doing it in ethernet.. with poorer results..
AC wireless bridging is highly subject to conditions in the house.. while it looks great on paper it can work really poorly in practice.
You might also do better than 50Mbps using homeplug adapters.. they are like wireless however.. promising much and delivering so much less.. however the latest batch of 500mbps devices in perfect conditions might get better than 50Mbps throughput.
Not sure of technical term, sort of wired bridge
It is actually a wireless bridge. Wireless to ethernet bridge is perhaps the best and clearest term.
Did you test the extreme whilst running 7.6.1 with the express.. my experience is that 7.6.4 is definitely slower and I can show it repeatedly when I flash it up or downgrade back again .. I get worse then better results.
Forcing the link to 5ghz can work but the express are not so great.. I think you would do better with a pair of extreme.. buy a second gen4 or gen5..
But I think you have done really well with the equipment you have..

  • Do I use Airport as my main router or do I use it in addition to a router?

So I am looking to improve my wireless signal in my house as well as find a better solution for Time Machine rather than using a portable HDD which I plug in now and again to backup.
My question is this, Do I use an Airport to replace my router or do I use it in addition to my router?
If it can be used in addition to could I place it say half way between my router and further point I would be from my main router so it doubles (Triples rather!) up as a wi-fi range booster?
Summary of home setup: Main router in living room. In apartment with 3 main rooms. Playstation must be wired so router cannot move to a more central location but this means poor signal in bedroom for iPhones / Apple TV.
    Thanks!
    Ray

There's nothing wrong with using a portable HDD to back up when it's convenient for you, and offer the advantage of being more easily transported than a Time Capsule. They're also inexpensive and disposable – features that enhance a comprehensive backup strategy. A Time Capsule is a fine product and I own several of them, but you can buy three 2 TB portable USB hard disk drives for the price of a single 2 TB TC.
(Not that 2 TB is necessarily the best choice though - a smaller capacity may be more appropriate for your requirements.)
Remember that portable Macs use "local snapshots" that are flushed to your Time Machine backup device when it becomes available. Plug it in when it's convenient for you. A Time Capsule is advantageous for those lacking the discipline to do that routinely.

  • How to Play One Song Without Repeat?

I am a new Ipod user, with an 80 GB video version. (I don't think it's one of the latest new models, but the second to last generation. Is that "fifth generation"?)I updated it with the latest firmware, just a few days ago.
I have used other MP3 players before though. In most respects I find the Ipod superior to the other MP3 players I have used. However, there is one setting, that I have made before on other MP3 players, for instance my old Creative Muvo 4GB (a few years old), which I cannot figure out how to set on my Ipod.
How does one set the Ipod to play one song, without going on to the next one, and without repeating that one? The default (of course) is to play all the songs in the album or playlist, going on to the next one, when the current song is finished. Looking in Settings, I find one can set "Repeat" to repeat the whole playlist or album when one comes to the end of it, or set it to repeat the same song.
But---what if one wants to play one song, and then have the Ipod stop (or at least pause), and not automatically go on to the next song, or repeat the same song? Is it possible to set that? I cannot see how. If there is a way to do that, please let me know.
Some might ask--why would one want to do that? True, for normal use, the default setting is the best one, going on to the next song, as when one listens to a CD. But, there are cases where one might want the Ipod to play one song and stop. I'll explain my reason for wanting to make that setting--I am an elementary school music teacher. In my concerts with the children this upcoming week, I will put the musical accompaniments for my choirs on the Ipod, and play them from it. When the choir is performing a song, at the end of the song, I don't want the Ipod to start playing the next song on the list. I want it to stop or pause at the end. It will be a hassle for me to have to manually stop it at the right moment, and I might miss it, and it will start playing the next song.
Any way to set it to play one song, and then stop? If so, please tell me.
If not, I would hope that Apple would add that capability to the next firmware upgrade. Do they read here for user's suggestions? Is there another place to make suggestions for improvement in the Ipod firmware?
    Thank you for your input.

Thank you for the reply, Chris.
I thought of that idea, a separate playlist for each song. That would be fine, if I was only playing one song. But I want to have the list of songs ready to play, so was going to put them in a playlist together. I need to be able to get to the next song quickly, without a lot of messing around with the Ipod.
Is it possible to put playlists within playlists? Then, perhaps I could make an individual playlist for each song, and make a playlist with all those one-song playlists together. If that is possible, it probably still would make it too complicated to go to the next song, probably having to use the menu button to go back to the higher playlist, etc. I want to keep playback simple.
I may try your idea of creating a blank "song" to put between tracks. (Is there also no way currently otherwise, to put a certain amount of empty space in between tracks?)
Thanks also for the feedback link. I will send this concern to Apple, and hope they add that capability soon.

  • Can I use Time Capsule only as a WiFi backup disk w/out having to configure it as my main router?

I already have an Airport Extreme that works great. Can I use Time Capsule ONLY as a WiFi backup disk w/out having to configure it as my main router with my Internet modem?

Can I use Time Capsule ONLY as a WiFi backup disk w/out having to configure it as my main router with my Internet modem?
Yes, you have two options here, each with advantages and disadvantages.
Option 1...connect the Time Capsule to your AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet cable connection. Turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule since your AirPort Extreme is already providing wireless.
Advantages...easy to configure, you can backup either over wireless or plug directly into one of the Ethernet ports to backup large files 3-5 times faster than wireless.
Disadvantages...none, except it requires a wired Ethernet connection to the AirPort Extreme.
Option 2....configure the Time Capsule as a wireless only hard drive.
Advantage.....you can locate the Time Capsule anywhere you want as long as it can receive a good wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme.
Disadvantages....harder to configure, backups will occur only over wireless.

  • I am experiencing network failures with my Airport Extremes: the main router is a 2nd Gen, the extension a 5th Gen. The 5th Gen keeps on losing connection with the main router. Any ideas why?

I am experiencing network failures with my Airport Extremes: the main router is a 2nd Gen, the extension a 5th Gen.
The 5th Gen keeps on losing connection with the main router and thus with the internet.
    Any ideas why?

Is the second Extreme configured to "extend" the network created by the first? If so its position must be such that it has a strong wireless connection to the first Extreme. If it is at the limits of the first one's wireless range its connection will be tenuous. Place them closer together and determine if that makes a difference.

  • Using a WRT54G as a second wireless and wired router on a LAN

I have setup a WRT54G as a second wired and wireless router on my local LAN.
The WAN wired side of the WRT54G is setup completely DHCP. It gets IP 192.168.1.104 most of the time. (I have used a PC with DHCP on theis ethernet wire and it gets to the internet OK).
The LAN side of the WRT54G is setup as 192.168.20.1 and all wireless and wired devices connecting to it get ips of 192.168.20.xxx and communicate between them selfs perfectly.  However, none of them can get to the internet through the WRT54G.  What have I done wrong?
    Thank You

I guess your WRT54G is not connected to Internet directly, but it's connected to another router that has Internet access.
If this is the case, you can configure this device as access point/hub only in order to get Internet access from the other router. Ignore the WAN connection on this WRT54G, just connect both router's LAN port with crossover cable.. After that configure the WRT54G's wireless setting. You can get more detailed info on how to do it in following article:
