2 x 256mb + 2 x 512mb = Dual Channel?

Hi all,
Should be a quick and easy one, Have read a few posts in the sticky's but not found an answer yet. Here goes:
I currently have 2 x 256mb in dual channel. My local store is selling 512mb stiks cheap if I buy 2 can I run them all in dual channel?
They are the same brand. BUT I think I read somewhere about the Newcastle Cpu's not running 4 stiks in dual channel mode or it may have been that they could only run at 333mhz.
Can you chaps clarify any of this for me, before I shell out my hard earner cash?
Cheers Ric.

Do you have the D-Bracket installed? If so what does it list the error being (please no color codes, post the actual error listed in your manual)? What are the max amps on the 3.3v 5v and 12v rails? This info can be found on a sticker on the side of the PSU. Also what are your complete system specs? Use my sig for parts to include.
Good Luck
Jeremy
The board didn't come with any accessories or a manual as it was a refurb purchase from newegg.com so I can not tell you anything.
As far as the max amps on the rails you mentioned, 3.3v is 28A, 5v is 45A and 12v is 18A. As far as system specs, the components I've listed are the only things being used atm as I'm down to barebone trying to troubleshoot this problem.
About the Mobile 64 Clawhammer 3000+ that I have, the reason I chose this board was because I was told (I don't remember where exactly anymore) that this was one of the few mobos that would with with a Mobile AMD Athlon 64 processor. The reason I chose the Mobile AMD Athlon 64 3000+ socket 754 Clawhammer processor was because it was cheaper than a normal desktop 3000+ 64 socket 754 processor @ Newegg.com and it had a full megabyte of L2 cache vs the 512KB L2 cache that the newcastle 3000+ AMD 64 socket 754 processor.

  • Dual Channel memory problems on Neo 875P

I am having considerable trouble getting the NEO 875P to work with dual channel DDR400 DIMMs. I have two Kingston KVR400X64C25 DDR400 256MB memory modules, each of which works correctly by itself. However, once I move one
of the modules to channel B, I cannot boot my operating system (currently Windows XP.) The problem also occurs in Windows 2000, which I also have on the system. I receive blue screen errors that indicate paging/memory problems. I have upgraded my BIOS to the latest version (1.3)* in the hope that it would solve my problems, but it has not. The POST screen detects that there is 512MB of memory working in Dual Channel mode, but even when it does get through the O/S booting process (rarely), it crashes within minutes. Putting just one of the chips in makes the system perfectly stable. If anyone has any information, please let me know!

    * My board was dead after trying to flash the 1.3 BIOS, but after about 10 attempts of using CTRL+HOME method to recover the BIOS, it finally worked with version 1.0. I then re-flashed with 1.3, and it rebooted fine. Are there any updates about all of the problems with v1.3 ?

    >I can only answer based on what I've read on this forum
I figured as much, I was just wondering if you knew whether MSI themselves frequents the forums or answers emails sufficiently.
I've had an interesting development though. I stumbled upon Tom's Hardware Guide's article about 875P motherboards at http://www17.tomshardware.com/motherboard/20030519/i875p-01.html
They mentioned that they needed to increase the memory voltage from 2.5 to 2.6 in the BIOS to get some memory modules to work. I did this, and for the first time, I am running in Dual channel DDR mode. However, the article also mentions that "the system does not run completely stably", so I guess I'll have to wait and see if it crashes again. However, I'm far enough beyond the XP splash screen to post this message, so I guess we're getting somewhere!

  • How to Enable Dual Channel?

    Hi,
I have an MSI K8N Neo Plat, with a Newcastle 3200+ cpu, and two sticks of Kingstone DDR-SDRAM PC3500 - 256Mb.
Anyway, according to CPU-Z the memory is running in single channel mode...
Is there any way to get it to run dual channel?
I've tried it in slots 1&2, 1&3 and 2&3, but all report single channel.
The CPU and board are not overclocked in any way, and it is running stable and has no other issues (aside from the incorrectly reported CPU temperature).
    Thanks for you help...

Ok, I'm probably just getting DDR and Dual Channel mixed up
    So, on bootup it reports...
    DDR400 Memory Clock : 200Mhz
    TCL:2 Trcd:3 Tras:8 Trp:3 (1T Timing)
Which is what should be expected for this kind of ram on this board?
(I know 1T and TCL:2 are both good values, I presume the DDR memory clock at 200 gives a 400Mhz throughput?)
Also If I were to add a 512Mb stick into this would it still run at DDR400?
    Thanks....

  • Satellite Pro M70-235: Does it have Dual Channel?

Can somebody tell me if this model has dual channel? Thanks for reply

    Hi
    Of course.
In my knowledge every newer notebook supports dual channel memory modules.
The Satellite Pro M70 supports DDR2 modules as following:
    DDR2-400/533 256MB (PA3389U-1M25)
    DDR2-400/533 512MB (PA3412U-1M51)
    DDR2-400/533 1GB (PA3411U-1M1G)

  • Dual channel + single channel.

I have two sticks of 256mb pc2700 RAM on my board now, and was wondering if I ordered one stick of 512, to total 1 gig would it hinder my performance? Since I have 2x256 in dual channel. Or would getting one more stick of 256 be better? I only have 3 slots on my board.  How would I arrange them? I read the manual, but people are telling me different things.
    Specs:
    MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR
    AMD 2500 xp
    Mushkin 2 x's 256MB PC2700 (5-2-2-2)
    MSI ti4200 64mb
    WD 80GB 8MB Cache HDD
    PSU 420 watt
    4x 80mm fans
    XP Home

Whoever told you that is on drugs and should be b*i*t*c*h slapped...on my -ILSR board I have 2 sticks of 256mb in 1&2 and a 512mb stick in slot 3 and when I boot up it does utilize dual channel mode...I tested this thoroughly back a while ago with different combinations and the results I got were clearly that it is enabled the way I had it...when I put the 512 and a 256 in 1&2 and a 256 in 3 then it disabled the dual channel...
My ASUS board does the same thing and says that Dual Channel is enabled in the same config at the boot screen...when I did the mixed test then it said that it was disabled.
So I don't know who you talked to but I wouldn't doubt if it was the same guy that either works on this forum or the guy that wrote the code for the temperature reading of the BIOS heheheh
    Cheers!! 8)

  • Trouble with Neo4 Platnum and AMD X2 with dual channel memory

I just installed an X2 3800+ in my Neo4 Platnum board.  The board had a 3500 in it and ran fine.  When I installed the X2, the machine will no longer POST if the memory is in the dual channel mode.  I flashed to the latest BIOS (1.8) and it still does not work.  I am using 2 Corsair XMS 2-2-2-5 Dimms each at 512MB.  The PC POSTs fine if I place both modules in the Green slots.  It does not work with 1 in green and 1 in purple (with either Dimms1-2 or 3-4).  Has anyone else seen this?

    Todd,
Your last post help me understand your situation a bit better.  Here are some questions for you:
1- On your old system did these memory sticks work fine has a dual channel pair? Were these 2 memory sticks bought has a dual channel rated matched pair?
2- In your own words give me your definition of POST?
3- In your own words give me your exact detailed rendition of what happens when you try to post with dual setup. (How far do you get? Where does it hang up?)
4- Can you access your BIOS if booting with only one memory stick? If so, this is only for testing purposes, set your memory as 2.5,3,3,8, and 2T and add 0.05 volts to both your CPU and memory recommended voltages. Save, exit, and then shut down your system. Re-install the second stick of RAM in a proper dual channel slot. Re-boot and see what happens. If successful posting and booting in dual channel with this BIOS config go back to your BIOS and tighten your board and memory timings one at a time until you ID the perfect BIOS config for your CPU and RAM. Do the same with your CPU & RAM voltages.
AMD CPUs encompass their own memory control devices. There might just be enough variance between your older & newer AMD chips to reject dual configuration. If this is the case you may be able to correct it by using step for above. If this does not work, you sould borrow some suitable and proven dual channel memory sticks from a friend to see if the will work in your rig as dual channel?
Just keep on trucking & you'll solve it

  • [Other 865 Series] MSI 865PE Neo2-V and Dual Channel Mode Question

Hello, I have a quick question regarding dual channel mode with my current motherboard. I have an MSI 865PE Neo2-V and am wondering if it is possible to enable dual channel mode while having three RAM modules inserted in the motherboard.
For example, I currently have one 512MB PC3200 module in my computer. If I purchase another 512MB module and run them in dual channel mode, will it be possible to buy a 1GB module or another size module, and still have all three slots run in dual channel mode? Or is dual channel only operational on this motherboard if only two of the three slots are occupied?
    Thanks.

Dual channel requires an even number of sticks.

  • Neo2 platinum Encountering Stability Problems /w dual channel memory

    Hello,
Recently I built my first computer ever, see bottom.  After getting windows installed I then had problems with installing other programs and general stability issues.  I tried reinstalling windows and after the reinstall I got the same problems.
Something to do with the instability is when I start it up, and go into BIOS, it states my Athlon 64 3500+ as running at 2211, a half percent overclock.  Also, even though I have the FSB set as 200mhz, when I go into CoreCenter on windows it states the FSB as being set 201mhz.  In the nVidia system utility, it states my memory as running at 402mhz, and I had to crank that down to 400mhz to get stability, it allowed my to install programs without error, but there were still stability problems like crashes(blue screen, the computer just plain restarting without notice).  I took out one of my memory cards, both of them work alone though, I've ran memory test utilities.  That had a good effect and the computer runs fairly stable, but I still have problems, and I want to be able to take advantage of dual channel.  I'm running my memory on auto and it's using the times of 2-3-3-6-2T.
Another problem I'm experiencing is the AC97 audio not being detected and loaded by windows, it will say I have no audio device, and the speaker will not show up in the notification area in the bottom right-hand corner.  This happens inconsistantly.

which test utilities did you use, Don't quiet understand  Quote

    3) It may be worth checking the Mushkin site or any documentation you have to verify that the auto settings agree with the quoted settings for the modules. It's not unkown for errors to occur when the memory controller on the CPU to misinterpret the SPD chip setting on your sticks - this is where the auto settings come from. Some memory like certain corsair modules need to run at different settings on AMD64, thus auto timings must be overidden,
    4) Have you installed the Realtek drivers from the CD, & enabled onboard sound in Bios. When these are done normally there's the MSI Sound Effect manager in control panel. you just need to set your speaker config in the Windows Sounds & Audio Devices.
    5) Usual question What power supply are you using as been underpowered on the 12v rail in particular can be the cause of crashes,

  • Dual channel question

    Hi,
Just want to know.....i have 2x512(matched pair) DDR 400 , how can i be sure that im working in dual channel ?
And if i add more 512 in the third ram slot ill still work in dual channel ?
    Thx

    Quote
to use dual channel you MUST have the same amout of memory in slot 3 as you have in slot 1 and 2.
Well if so then why is it that before I got my second lot of 512Mb of ram I had 512 in slot 1 and 256 in slot 3 and it was running in dual mode.
Then later I put 512 in 1,256 in 2,and 512 in 3 and it was still dual mode.
    I have even had 256 in 1,512 in 2 and 3.
Regardless of where I put them it still runs in dual channel mode.

  • Can't get Dual Channel mode to work

    Hello,
I have a pair of 512MB DDR400 ram sticks (listed in my sig).
The Memory Slots are arranged like this:
                1 2   3
    [cpu]    |  |    |
I put each stick in slot 1 and 2 and no workie, still Single Channel Mode.
I put a stick in slot#2 and #3, no workie.
I put a stick in slot#1 and slot#3, no workie.
Is there something else that I'm missing or did I just buy the wrong memory for dual channel operation? It was not a matched set, but it is the same no-name brand of memory I bought from newegg.com. They both have the same 3225804T-5 marking on them...
They are supposed to be 2.5CS and that is what my bios is set to. I don't have any special settings in the bios that I know of..
Let me know if you have any ideas or if I need to post more information.
    Thank You!

    K7N2-V
Not sure about this but is that motherboard based on the Nvidia nForce2 400 chipset?
What does the manual specs say?
If it is then it doesnt have 2 memory controllers and can only do single channel.

  • Dual channel doesn't work in green but does in green/purple?

Just bought 2 512mb OCZ PC3200 Plat. rev. 2 and tried to put both sticks into Channel A (green).  My system didn't post, and the Dbar had 1 green in the upper right corner (saying memory damaged or installed improperly).  So, I moved one of the modules to the first purple DIMM slot; now I have DIMM 0 and DIMM 1 filled.  I noticed in the manual that I should fill the green slots first, then the purple.
Is this going to be a problem having one DIMM on green and the other on purple?  My sandra test shows that I have about 5950mb/s memory bandwidth; would both greens be slightly higher than that?  Am I going to be screwed for overclocking?

    READ THE MANUAL
they are COLOR CODED for a reason..
Green is DDR CHANNEL A - Purple is DDR CHANNEL B
of course DUAL CHANNEL will only work when you have one MODULE in EACH CHANNEL, as is the nature of DUAL CHANNEL

  • My dual channel doesn´t Work :S

I have this Ram ->Kingston KVR400X64C3AK1/1G (2 x 1 modules 512 mb), and if i put the two modules enabling the dual channel, putting 1 onto 2nd channel and 1 onto 3rd channel mi pc goes down while i´m in windows, it´s restarts once and once again, 1 minute left or 1 minute before, it´s random but it crashes. I tried to configure the memory modules in a single channel, and it works.
How can i make to work my pc in dual channel?
thxs for your time, and sorry ofr my english i´m spanish
    ag3r

Not really. Adding an extra 512mb of ram to my machine helped with framerates and stuff, but loading UT2004 Assault maps with dual channel PC2100 memory was just as slow as it was with single channel. It's only 3 to 5 percent and not worth the extra time/money for him, IMO. I never would have done it had I known there was no performance gain, I would have instead sold my 512mb DIMM, lived without my comp for a few days and then put the money towards a 1gb DIMM. :D
I often wonder why AMD board manufacturers even bother wasting their time and money putting dual channel on their athlon xp mobos. Even Athlon 64's that are not FX chips don't take advantage of dual channel.

  • Asymmetric dual channel in Intel Macs?

I read somewhere else that Intel Macs support asymmetric dual channel. According to this, for example, Intel Macs' dual channel capability supports 512MB + 1GB combination unlike non-Intel Macs that support symmetric dual channel, not asymmetric dual channel.
Is that right? Any comment please.

Can't edit my original post for some reason..but the Intel 945 spec sheet would support the asymmetric dual channel claim.
The claims I have seen on this are...
"But the third one ("Dual Channel Asymmetric") is very interesting from theoretical point of view. It allows installation different memory capacities into different channels. As a result, the controller will try partially enable the dual-channel access. In practice, developers guarantee stable operation but warn that the performance level in this case will be closer to the single-channel access rather than the dual-channel."
The 4GB seems a little confusing though. I have seen where people claim the MBP will support 4GB, but the spec seems to indicate the 945 chipset only supports up to 1GB modules so that would not seem to support that claim since the MBP only has 2 slots.

  • 3x256 ram dual channel ok ?

    hi agian,,,
Can I run dual channel memory mode with 3x 256Mb (2100) or does it only work with 2 banks "DUAL" ????
And if I cant run D/C mode will my pc be better with 2x256 D/C Mode or with 3x256 normal ...
    cheers

I have run benches and have not lost a single fps using 2x 512 compared to a single 512.
Using memtest I was assured that the bandwidth was increased using combined slots 1 and 3. Actually came out to be 35% increase over using 1 512 memory in slot 1 only.
The page file should stay enabled  as the system needs it in the event your system experiences a kernel mode STOP error to capture a Memoey Dump file.
I have already experienced this and I'm sure I'm not alone.
1  1/2 times ram for min and 3 x ram for max preferably on seperate IDE or hard drives.
I have min max set 768 for each HD for a combined 1536 which falls in the recomended allotment.
The system uses the inactive drive for the swap file.
Using AIDA 32 I see that I am now using 285MB ram that would be over the 256 max stated. Humm
I have most unneeded services disabled no restore running either.

  • K7N2 delta thermal sensor / dual channel

    Hi all.
I was wondering for what purpose my k7n2 delta ilsr has a thermal sensor (tape sensor) underneath the CPU, right in the middle of the socket... shouldn't the board read the temps directly from the CPU diode? Anyone knows?
I have also seen an interesting thing... I had 2 sticks of 512mb kingston in that board, in dual channel mode and last week I ran doom3's timedemo demo1, and I noticed that I got a 10fps lower result than those I had earlier, when I was running single channel with only one stick.. so I pulled the second stick out and installed it in the other dimm (didn't change anything in BIOS), wich uses the same mem controller that the first and ran timedemo again... As you might guess i got about 10fps more than the previous result    I went searching it and i did find one article confirming this - http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=10384 And a LOT more saying the contrarylike this one! http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/nforce2-1vs2channels/
I found some potential explanations but I think 10fps is still a lot for those explanations, besides nVidia sold this as a high-end feature on this chipset... what the hell???

The modules are kvr400x64c25/512, and they are at default timmings. I´ve been using one of them for about 1 year and it works perfectly. The other one is recent but it works flawlessly too. Howerver when they're together this thing happens. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the modules/kingston because it's so weird. I can't find any logical explanation, I'll keep looking... As you say Stu, kingston is a hit or miss, but hit and miss at the same time is strange. I'll do some research on those mushkin/crucial modules. Thanks.
They are not matched... Ill bet 1000 dollars that is why
Kingston absolutely requires the sticks be purchased in their "DUAL CHANNEL" (2 stick) package. I already went through that with Kingston a year ago with the K7N2-D2-P
