2 x 320GB HDD in my Qosmio G30 - SOLUTION

Since I had some difficulty finding this information, I hope it's useful to some of you.
For a while I have been considering to upgrade my two 120Gb harddisks to something bigger. However I got contradicting information about the maximum size the G30 would accept. Nobody was able to assure me that a certain size would work.
Since prices have dropped a lot recently, and I can always use the disks externally, I bought two 320Gb disks, and decided to simply try it. I just finished fitting them.
Installing XP using the original recovery disk went perfectly. I have them working in Raid 0, striping configuration, and sofar they work flawlessly with the full capacity (about 600Gb.
Not only a lot more space, but these bigger disks are supposed to be faster too. As far as I'm concerned an excellent and relatively cheap upgrade.

This is really helpful posting.
Thanks you for this short notification

  • Unable to set HDD passwords for Qosmio G30

I have tried in vain to find documentation on how to do this -- using the F2 method to access these bios options never works, I have tried using config assist / password utility and can find no options. I have upgraded the bios to 1.70
Does anyone know how to access the bios to enable the hdd password functionality ?

If you can not find this option I presume it is simply not available. Sorry but I dont have other explanation. Checking users manuals there is nothing about HDD password on Qosmio G30. Have you check it too?
By the way: I am not 100% sure but I believe that HDD password protection is only on business notebook like Tecra and Portege available, not on multimedia notebook like Qosmio series.

  • Bigger HDD in a Qosmio G30-134?

My G30-134 has two 120GB HDD's. I would like to change one or both for a bigger size.
    Is that possible?
Can I change just one, or is it better to have two identical HDD's?
Is there a maximum capacity I can use?
    Do all 2,5' drives fit?

    Hi
    > Do all 2,5' drives fit?
No, you have to use the HDDs which support the SATA interface!
    > Is there a maximum capacity I can use?
Hmm. Usually not all sizes are supported by BIOS.
    I found out this compatible HDD sizes;
    40GB, 60GB, 80GB, 100GB or 120GB internal serial-ATA (SATA) HDDs
But this are not official informations :( maybe the BIOS is able to handle bigger HDDs then 120GB.
Just test it. Many notebook and part dealers provide such testing possibilities.
    > Can I change just one, or is it better to have two identical HDD's?
You can upgrade only one HDD but I would recommend upgrading both HDD to the same size because of the RAID. Using the mirroring RAID option the notebook will recognize only the smallest HDD size. This means that if you use one 100GB HDD and second 120GB HDD only the 100GB of 120GB would be recognized.
For more details check your user manual -> RAID section

  • Qosmio G30-126 - Win7 or Vista instaltion hdd not showing

    Hello everyone,
i have one system Qosmio g30-126.
I dont have the recovery cds.
I want to instal the Win7 or Win Vista.
He is not showing me the both 200+200 HDD.
plz telling to me what i do.

    Hi mate
I think you dont need a SATA driver but RAID driver!
As far as I know the Qosmio G30 supports RAID and therefore you need to include the RAID driver.
Visit the Toshiba European driver page and download the RAID driver which is listed in the list.
Note: Choose the Archive in Product Type because G30 is an older series.
After you have downloaded and uzipped the driver, you will have to add this driver during the Windows installation setup.

  • After recovery the second HDD is not visible - Qosmio G30

    Hello
I have Qosmio G30 and i use the recovery cd and i lose the 2 hdd
The 2 Hdd is not shown in my computer and every time i restart the system tell need mirroring.
    So ineed some help plz
    thx

    Hi
I presume your RAID settings are set to mirroring (RAID-1) and not to stripping (RAID-0)
The RAID settings can be changed in the BIOS on the 3rd page.
    Please check this.
But note; if you would change the RAID settings then you would lose the whole data stored on the HDD.
PS: Check you user manual. There is a useful info about RAID and how to use it.
    Best regards

  • Which HDD is the right one for Qosmio G30

    Hi every one
I have a Qosmio G30-161. The recovery discs are interrupted by a blue screen and windows cannot be installed!
I tried installing a retail windows xp but did not recognize the hard disk!
I am almost convinced that the problem in the hard disc - the laptop has2-60G each!
The question is: what is the right hard disk that will fit the laptop!
In the specifications there were written S.M.A.R.T !!
    What is that mean?

    Hi buddy,
You can order such HDDs from an authorized service provider in your country. Did you already ask the guys if they can order a new HDD for you?
Qosmio G30 supports already HDDs with SATA interface so you can also buy HDDs with larger capacity. If you search for a new HDD, its only important that it has SATA interface and 2.5 form factor.

  • Qosmio G30: Booting from external ESATA HDD

    Dear All,
I'm trying to boot from an external HDD connected with a express/34 card that has an BOOT feature. It works like a charm on a other manufacturers notebook because the express/34 card is recognized without problems. I can choose the external sata HDD as bootdevice.
My Qosmio G30 BIOS (V3.5) seems not having this option. Any suggestions? Thank you for feedback!

    Hi
Such boot options depending from the BIOS.
The BIOS which is installed on the G30 does not provide such option. So unfortunately, but there is nothing to do!

  • Qosmio G30 - What HDD are compatible for a upgrade

    Hey Guys,
I'd like to upgrade the HDD's in my G30 and am not sure what is compatible.
At the moment they are the stock 120GB MK1234GSX drives.
I've foung the MK3252GSX (250GB) but it is ATA8, whereas the current drives are ATA7.
    Is this an issue?
Does anyone know what larger capacity drives I can fit into the G30?
    Cheers
    Gerald

What you need is a SATA HDD.
The G30 supports SATA controllers and therefore you should use the SATA HDDs (and not IDE)
    > I've found the MK3252GSX (250GB) but it is ATA8, whereas the current drives are ATA7.
    Is this an issue?
The new ATA8 interface is faster as the ATA7 (133 MB/s) but its down compatible to the other ATA standards. Therefore you could use the ATA8 HDD too.
    > Does anyone know what larger capacity drives I can fit into the G30?
Im not sure if you will be able to insert large HDDs as 250GB due to the BIOS limitation but someone said that a 320GB could be compatible too. But I never tested such big HDDs, so I really dont know if its true or not.

  • Qosmio G30 freezes upon Norton Internet Security 2008 startup

Norton Internet Security 2008 will freeze my computer as soon it tries to load and the only way to go on is to restart the system by pressing the on/off-button.
My notebook is a Toshiba Qosmio G30-177 (Model No. PQG32E-02G022GR) with Vista Ultimate and NIS2007 pre-installed. I have no problems with this NIS2008 version on my other notebook (Qosmio F10 - PQF10E-02300JGR, WinXP MCE).
NIS2007 runs fine on my G30 and I do not have any problems at all, but newer versions of NIS seem to get in conflict with my system:
    1. I am able to install and run the new version, download all updates and adjust the settings. Maybe one or two days later my computer will freeze after start exactly when the tray icon of NIS appears. For a couple of seconds there is just no response of the system at all and the LED's of my notebook show that all HD activity has stopped. After being idle for these couple of seconds, the cooling fan will start to operate at maximum power, creating a tremendous noise I never experienced before, not even while the CPU was running at 100% for some time due to other programs. Forcing a restart is all I can do.
    2. Now this time, I successfully restarted my notebook again (took some attempts) and it suddenly did not freeze. Then I disabled firewall and auto-protect permanently, so there was no freezing upon startup and I just had to manually activate both firewall and auto-protect after start. In order to prevent freezing again after reboot, I always disabled NIS before shutdown. For the next one or two days this workaround was quite successful.
    3. All of a sudden, after one or two days, this workaround is going to become useless, because the system starts to freeze again at the very moment the tray icon appears. In this case, restarting has no effect at all, and NIS will continue to freeze at startup. I also tried to prevent NIS form starting by no longer allowing ccApp.exe to automatically run upon start (administrative tools > system configuration > "startup" tab). This is successful and my notebook is able to start normally, but if I later try to start NIS manually, it will freeze again.
I had this problem since NIS2008 was just released, so I thought that meanwhile a Windows or Norton update might have fixed the issue, but this weekend I gave NIS2008 another try without success. I am almost sure that the problem is not caused by any other software than Windows and/or Norton, because I also tried to install NIS after a full system recovery, thus having only pre-installed NIS2007 and Vista on my notebook. I did use the Norton removal tool and followed the deinstall instructions before trying to install the newer version of course.
My last hope was that the NIS2009beta version somehow would not freeze my system, but it does. It does not matter if I try to run 2008 or 2009beta version, the problem is exactly the same.
What really drives me almost crazy is the fact that NIS runs perfectly for some time, then needs a rather small workaround, and then after some time totally refuses to work. In these couple of days I did not change any system settings, install or deinstall any programs or did anything that I felt could conflict with NIS...
So far, I have no idea of a solution and have to use NIS2007 again.
Does anybody know how to solve this problem?

    Hi !
I use NIS since 2001 and never had any serious trouble with this software.
There could be some compatibility problem, but I don't think that Vista is causing it, because otherwise a lot more people should have the same problem. Even the installation of all current Windows, NIS and Qosmio updates did not solve it. Of course I tried to get help using Symantec's Support and their user forums, but without success. This problem seems to be a rare one (unfortunately for me). I tested the NIS2009beta and even though it's a new version, the PC freezes again when this program starts. And this made me think that maybe a service or setup by Toshiba causes the problem and other Vista users are not affected. It's a strange thing that the pre-installed NIS2007 version is running fine...
    Cheers,
    Mario

  • Qosmio G30 - Media center remote control doesn't work in windows

    Dear All,
    I have Qosmio G30-194,
first i had a problem with the VGA , i send it for repair, when it comes back i noticed that the remote control is not working on windows Media Center, while in A/V mode it work perfectly.
I tried to do full system restore from the recovery DVD, but nothing changed, even i installed Windows Vista with all of its drivers.
Nothing changed also, I borrowed a USB IR received for another remote control it worked perfectly with my remote on windows.
Please advise me what to do, do i send it back to the service center , or there is an easier solution.
    Mazen Habbal
N.B, : My laptop info are:
    Model Number PQG32E-01P018AR
    Thank you in advance

don't expect toshiba to fix problems like this.
they replaced motherboard on my laptop and ever since the remote was not working.. it would turn the laptop on but was unresponsive thereafter. thing's we have tried:
    - install software and drivers for remote again
    - reinstall windows
    - replace reciever
    - change motherboard
    - change remote
    - terminate and restart relevant processes
    - downgrade bios
    - update bios
    - combinations of the above
on several occassions Toshiba told me they were able to replicate and solve the problem but after trying it on my laptop they remembered that actually their one was slightly different.
almost a year later, i still have a non-working remote
my theory is the laptop leaves factory with certain software which Toshiba fail to include in recovery partition and\or bios that is available through them... so once you lose the factory components (i.e.the original motherboard) you also lose some necessary files with them.

  • Windows 7 installation on a Qosmio G30

When performing an advanced installation of Windows 7 on a Qosmio G30, the HDDs are not seen.
I mean, on the screen where I am supposed to select the drive to install Windows, there is nothing on display.
Do I have to uodate the HDDs drivers? If yes, I was not able to find them out on Toshiba web site.
If there is an other problem, please explain.
    KRGDS
    dco31

If you go into the BIOS at boot do you see the drive(s)? If no then then you have no hard drive(????) or you have a problem with the system. When you take the advanced option in install you see the physical drives (Disk0, Disk1, etc.) and the logical drives (C,D, etc) that they are partitioned into (and any free disk space). If you are seeing Disk 0 and nothing else then take Disk advanced option link on that screen to partition the drives.

  • Re: Qosmio G30 - RAID Problems on OS Installation

I've had my Qosmio G30-161 for half a year, and thought it'd ought to be time to reinstall the whole thing, so i could get rid of stuff i didn't need (Programs, Viruses and non-interesting video clips).
So i took my XP MCE Cd and tried to install, and i got guided through and come to the place where i needed to choose between 1st Unknown, 2nd Stripping, and 3rd Mirroring. I choose the stripping as i wished my harddrives to be in one. Then when i pressed "next" it gave me the error message "1005 - HDD not ready?"
I've tried going into the BIOS and chaneg the setting to different settings that Toshiba told me to, but it also warned me that if i changed the settings my OS would have to be reinstalled. No problem there. But i still get the same error message "HDD not ready?". So now i have to use another computer than my own to check the forums and mail etc.
Anyone know what i should do? I'll be glad with anything as long as i can have both my harddrives (60GB+60GB), and a working OS. :)
Please help, I'm urging for it, since the computer is the one i use for my school work. Feel free to ask questions about system stuff. If you have an answer, please let it be simple, since i realy don't wanna mess up again ^_^

Please check the details in user manual about the RAID installation.
Usually if you are using the clean Windows XP disk then you will have to include the RAID drivers firstly.
Without preinstalled RAID drivers the HDD will be not recognized and you will be not able to install the OS!

  • Qosmio G30 - system problem after recovery procedure

I have Qosmio G30 - 148 which have Windows XP MCE, when trying to download some programs system crashed and make automatic restart.
I then used a RECOVERY CD to recover my all system and followed the instructions on the CD but when finished and rebooting the system a famous blue screen displayed tell me there's a problem in my system and windows must be restarted.
When reboot in safe mode there is a message tell me that the system is not fully installed. Please run setup again.
Could any body help me in that problem because it's a strange problem?
Note: I tried to install Windows XP from external CD but system did not know the hard disk.

    Hi Ahmed
    I would try to provide some useful hints;
First of all you can install the XP Pro on the Qosmio G30 this is no problem.
I assume you couldnt install the XP on the G30 because your have not installed the RAID driver firstly. As far as I know the XP would not recognize the HDD without the RAID driver.
The RAID driver installation is not very difficult. During the XP Setup procedure you have to press the F6 to include the driver from the external USB FDD drive.
If you dont have a USB diskette drive, then you could use a nLite to create a new XP CD with the RAID driver.
However despite everything Im not sure if this will help.
There could be really a hardware issue with your G30.

  • How to install Windows XP 64bit on my Qosmio G30-219

Problem.....how to install windows xp 64 on my qosmio G30-219? seems that Toshiba doesn't support it! Or have i missed something?
    Help please!!!!

Of course you can install it on the Qosmio G30.
The problem is that you will not find any Toshiba 64bit XP drivers on the Toshiba driver page!!!
    Why???
Well, Im not sure why but I presume the Toshiba notebooks were not delivered with 64bit OS and therefore 64bit drivers dont exists.
I assume you cannot install the 64bit XP on the Qosmio because you have not included an RAID driver!!! Am I right?
The RAID driver is need and important to recognize the HDD!!!
You can include it pressing F6 during the windows setup installation procedure
    So its one little hint!
