2 x Project Files created WHY?

OK - here's a good one for a Sunday Morning.
Firstly let me tell you that when this is printed it's over
600pages.
I'd completed this project last night - about a months work.
When I tried to load the project file i received the "unable to
open project message" - project files created earlier that day were
all fine and could be opened (these were "backed-up" copies).
Now then I looked into the folder there were 2!! projects
present in the same folder, one about 2Mb in size, and the second
only 2kb. So you'd think that the former would be the correct one -
but this gave the aforementioned error message.
Now here's the odd thing. If I renamed the 2kb version, eg
instead of MYPROJECT it was MYPROJECTPENGUIN, and then ran that one
everything worked perfectly.
However if I swapped this idea - I got the same error.
OK - now I can't figure out why on earth this
happened...............HELP!!!
Al

Here's a quick update:
I've installed trial version of X5, and this seemed to sort
out the problem.
Managed to get an order approved for v6. So am currently
downloading it....

  • Project files creating dup assets (but not imported via scan)

I've looked at these two threads: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9147105#9147105
    and
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9096958&#9096958
which sort of address my question.
I do not import media via scan. I am attempting to import project files with associated media. I import a project file and it imports the media assets as well. Here's the problem. When I then go and import another project file with many of the same assets, FCSvr creates duplicate assets, but only if I import the second project file soon after the first. I waited a week and tried it, and no duplicate assets were created. I have setup periodic scans on my Library Device which is an EIP device and which is where I'm sending the files that get imported. The scans are setup to run every 10 mins or so but don't seem to have an effect. So why does this work if I wait more than a day or so and can I manually kick off the scan or whatever process I need to setup so that I avoid getting duplicate assets.
Again, I don't want to originally import the media via scan of an EIP device b/c I want to do set some metadata fields on multiple assets but not all assets in the project.
I'm really just curious what process it is that tells FCSvr that these assets already exist in the db and filesystem and how I can manually kick it off.
    Any enlightenment would be great.
    Thanks.
    H.

You probably have a full scan running overnight, which is what is catching all the media. The add only scan you have running every 10 minutes only get new media that is written to the EIP device.
If that doesn't seem to address your question, then try rephrasing it. It's difficult to understand from your explanation what you have running where, and what you're uploading where.

  • FCP 7 Project Files created in 10.6.8 with 10.8.4

Will my Final Cut Pro 7 Project files that were created on 10.6.8 be effected when I upgrade to Mountain Lion?

    Hey there jeffhoch!
I have an article for you that can help you make sure you get the best experience from upgrading to Final Cut Pro X. That article can be found here:
Final Cut Pro X: Best practices for updating
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5550
Naturally, the answer to your question is that yes, your projects will be affected. They will have to be upgraded in order to comply with Final Cut Pro X. This should not affect the projects negatively, but I will stress that the article gives you information on backing up your projects and events, and I would definitely recommend that as well:
Backing up your Projects and Events
See Back up Projects, your Project Library, and Events in Final Cut Pro X for instructions.
When backing up your projects and Events be sure to place copies of them inside a new backup folder. This will prevent Final Cut Pro X from automatically opening your backup Projects and Events.
Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.

  • How can I transfer archived project files created on a PC in PE 3, to an iMac and open them in PE10?

I have several years of archived PE projects created in PE2 and 3 on a PC running Vista.  The files are stored on an external disk. I would like to open the archived files using an iMac running Mountain Lion and PE10.  When I tried to open the project files in PE10 on the iMac I got the message:
"The project is not compatible with current version of Premier Elements".
Is there a way of translating the project files so that they become compatible?

    ah&ah
Until proven otherwise, I do not believe there is anyway to transfer a Premiere Elements (any version) project.prel file created in Windows to Premiere Elements (any version) on a Mac computer.
Where did you get the idea that you could?
Even if you were dealing with a Windows to Windows transfer, I might expect problems going from those very early versions (Premiere Elements 2 and 3) to Premiere Elements 10. Cannot guarantee that you would not encounter problems even then.
I will check further to confirm, but that is my understanding on the matter.
Do you have any Windows computer so that you could export each of those version 2 and 3 projects as a .mov export that you could import into your Premiere Elements 10 Mac project?

Add On...Please check out these recent threads to get varying perspective on the matter, most cannot do, one seems to say yes.

  • FCP Project File created in 5.1.4 won't open in 5.1

    Hi All,
I recently had to replace my hard drive. Things could have been worse, but thankfully I saved a copy of a major project to another drive. I successfully reinstalled all my original software including FCP 5.1. The problem is that I was running 5.1.4 for this project and now the file won't open. (General Error 41)
Is it still possible to find a software update for Version 5.1.4?
I have searched the forum and I suspect that the answer is no. It seems that version 6 is the only version available now.
My back-up plan is to find someone in my area who has the 5.1.4 version to open my project file, then export as an xml file. Then I plan to import the xml into my system with the version of 5.1 and I'm back to work.
It's a big project for us and I could really use some reassurance. Thanks everyone.
    Cheers,
    Chris

  • Crash destroys project file.  Why?

    Adobe Premiere Pro CS6
OS 10.7.5, running on a 2.3 GHz Mac Mini with 8GB RAM
I'm learning my way around, transitioning from FCP to Premiere.  I've been going into old FCP projects, importing the media files, and re-editing them in Premiere.  It's been very helpful!
One of my projects, shot specifically as a classroom challenge, involves the elements for an entire package captured as a single clip.  For effective editing, one must go through the mega-clip and make subclips.  No big whoop, right?  I begin, and get about 1/3 of the way through that process.  It's annoying, since there doesn't seem to be a keystroke shortcut for "make subclip."  So I look around for a way to try and automate the process.
Now, keep in mind, there's no reason to think it can be automated.  There are no start/stop markers in the file, the metadata has been stripped, the timecode is continuous.  I set this up deliberately so that FCP's scene detection ability would not work.  But this is Premiere, right?  I save the file (named "Whylde", and start looking in menus.
"Analyze Content..." in the Clip Menu looks promising.  I select my big clip and click that.  Media Encoder launches, and Premiere crashes.  I send the error report and reopen Premiere.
"Premiere crashed.  This may have ruined your project file.  We'll try to reopen it, but no promises.  If this succeeds, you should save the file with a new name.  Do not resave with the same name."  I'm paraphrasing, but that's the gist of it.  Weird.  Ok.
The project opens, and immediately prompts me to save it.  I rename it, save it, then take a look.  Everything is there, nothing lost.  Nothing new, but nothing lost.  Well, let's try this again.  Clip Menu, Analyze Content... Crash.  Error report.  Relaunch.  "Resave under a different name" warning.
Crap.  Ok, moving on, not gonna waste more time on that.  But what's with the "don't resave using the same name" deal?  I close the copy of the copy and open the original file.  It gives me the "resave this with a different name" warning, but this time, I click Cancel.  The project opens.  Everything seems to be there.  I save it.  Nothing explodes.
Let's push this, then.  Exit Premiere, delete the "Copy" and the "Copy Copy."  Double click the original file.  Premiere opens, no warning message.  And no content.  Nothing.  No imported media, no subclips.
How is this possible?  The file as there, and functioning, moments ago.  How can saving it, using the same name, turn a functioning project into an empty project?  What would have happened if I had deleted "Whylde" and renamed "Copy of Whylde" or "Copy of Copy of Whylde" to "Whylde"?
And would "Analyze Content..." have done what I hoped it would do?
    Mahalo!
    Tom G

Analyze Content is chiefly for processing the audio to transcribe speech to searchable/navigable text. You can also have the video analyzed to find faces. Learn more here. In other words, not what you're looking for.
As for the prompt to save a new project on relaunch after a crash, that's simply a measure to give you the best chance of having a functioning project. The original project might be fine, but it could also be corrupted. Best to leave it be and save a copy of the recovered project rather than overwriting the original with the recovered one.
As to the original project being empty, you say nothing of having saved it between the time you imported content and attempted to analyze content. If you didn't save, then it stands to reason that the project would be empty. Note that you might find an auto-backup of the project in the DefaultProjectBackups folder, which is in the same folder as the project file.

  • Duplicates of RAW files created - why??

I've suddenly had LR 2.0 create duplicates of my RAW files with the changes being applied to the copies. I've now got a cluttered directory. Why, and can this be fixed easily?

They're in the same folder and I only had one copy and worked on them for a day. I did an optimize and restart and noticed it afterward at some point. It's like LR decided to re-import the whole folder. All the photos with changes got assigned the xxx-1.nef prefix.

  • Open FCP 6 project files in FCP 5

Hey guys, I've got a client who has FCP 5 and wants to open a project file created in FCP 6. I'm well aware of the incompatibility of the two project files, but is there any way he can access the edit? I know I could do an EDL, but I'm not sure how savvy he is with the program so the easier the process the better. Thanks.

In the FCP 6 project, export an XML file of the project. Use that file to build a NEW project in FCP 5. More details are in the manual.

  • Trouble opening project files with Windows 7 computer - Elements 8

I recently purchased a new Dell computer running Windows 7 platform and installed Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 and Premiere Elements 8 software.  This is the same software version that I ran on an older computer running Windows XP.  I have transferred all files to the new computer, but when I try to open slide show project files created on old computer, I get the followning error message:  "The file(s) listed will not be imported as it is not a supported file type."  This is the same software version, but running on a Windows 7 instead of XP platform.  What can I do to open these files?  I would not rather start over on these files on new computer.

  • After Effects CS6 - Project Files Virused?

    Guys,
I'm collaborating on a stereo TV show with several other CG artists (living around the U.S.), and one of them has been complaining for months now about how his AE project files (created with CS6, running under Windows 8 64-bit) have gotten huge, and take literally hours to load. He then shipped us the files for us to examine.
Here's the deal: one of his .AEP files clocks in at 222 megs, and when I loaded it into my copy of CS6 (running on a dual Xeon machine, Windows 7 64-bit, 32G of RAM), it took 45 minutes to load. (Another one of our artists, working on a Power Mac, tried loading a different project created by this guy, and it took 10 hours to load.)
I then proceeded to completely rebuild his comp in my copy of AE CC -- I loaded all his original footage (a combination of 32-bit .EXRs, .PNGs, .TIFs and .TGAs), set up the layers and effects filters exactly like his, and then resaved my file.
Result: my file is 2 megs in size -- 1/100th the size of his file -- and it loads on my machine in 5 seconds.
Has anyone ever heard of something like this? I'm wondering if somehow a virus or Trojan put an enormous amount of spurious data in these files, or if they were somehow created with a cracked version of AE or some other plugin, and our legit copies of AE are brought to a standstill with his bad .AEP files. (Note: I scanned his files and footage with Avast Antivirus, MalwareBytes and the Windows Malicious Software Removal tool, and came up with nothing.)
Here's the other weird thing: I loaded one of his project files, then started deleting layers, footage, and comps, and kept resaving the project and checking the file size. Even after I deleted every single element in the project -- it was completely empty -- and saved it, the file size went down from 222 megs to only 214 (and that empty project file still took 45 minutes to load.) I saved this empty project as an .XML (.aepx) file, and that file is 430 megs!
What in the world is going on here? We really need to figure this out, because it's destroyed our productivity on this show having to rebuild these comps. Thanks,

Guys, all the footage is CG and was rendered from Lightwave -- there was no live-action footage to "camera track" or "stabilize."
Second, most of these comps don't even use a camera inside of AE -- they're 2D comps entirely.
And again, as an experiment, I deleted literally everything in the comp and saved a completely empty project, and the file was still huge and took 45 minutes to load. How can that be?
I would really love to send one of these files to Adobe and have you guys load it into a debug version of AE CS6 to see if you can identify what the problem is. Thanks,

  • FCP6 Project Files Open in FCP7?

    Hello
Just wondering if FCP6 project files, (created in a G5 desktop 10.4), will open in FCP7 in a Mac Pro with Lyon or Mt. Lyon? Then saved as a NEW/different file as a FCP7 project file?
    Thanx

Yes. They open fine. FCP 7 will just update the project file

  • Why can't I open a FCE project file that I have saved? (It now says ZERO kb

    Hello...
I have just started working on a project in Final Cut Express - I render, save, and close out of FCE - but, when I go back to FCE, the project I was working on does not open.
Why can't I open a project file that I have saved?
Here was my process in a nutshell:
~ When I opened FCE, I went the System Preferences and set the Scratch Disks to a folder on my external hard drive.
~Then, I went to File - New Project - worked on the project for a while (including creating bins, importing images and video, and creating a sequence.
~I saved the project file to the same folder that I set my Scratch Disks to.
    as often throughout this process.)
~When I was done, I saved again andd closed FCE.
~Then, soon after, I opened FCE again and my project did not open automatically.
~So, I clicked File - Open Recent - browsed to and chose the project file name and FCE gave me a "Unable to open file" message.
~When I check to see if the project file actually saved to my external hard drive, the name appears, but it says the file size is ZERO kb.
I have done this twice with the same unfortunate result. What am I doing wrong? I have worked on FCE on this same computer before, setting the Scratch Disks the same way, and I did not have this problem.
Please help. Thank you so much for your feedback.
    ...Rae

Are you sure you are trying to open the project file you actually saved ?
Try using Spotlight to search for your project file name. I might be wrong, but I guess you try to open an empty copy while your real project file (what you saved) is somewhere else in either your startup disk (Documents folder ?) or the external drive. If so do not use Open Recent in FCE but simply double click the "real" project file.
