2 x UAD-1e + Mac Pro

Hi everybody,
I hope somebody out there has the same system as I have ... just without my problems and therefore is able to give me some advice:
I'm running a Mac Pro 2,66GHz, 5 GB Ram and Logic 7.2.3. I put one UAD-1e card in PCI slot no. 4 (opposite to the graphic card). Still all fine. Now I added a 2nd card in slot no. 3 - problem starts:
I have an open song, 5 x EXS24 with drums, 1 Korg Wavestation plug, 11 (mono) audio tracks. So no big deal... runs flawless of course.
Added 4, 5 UAD (comp/eq) plugs, UAD performance meter says 12%. But then I add one more UAD plug, performance goes up to 20% and all I get to hear is "RRRRRRRRRRRRRR". Sounds like a sync error, system reports a midi-audio conflict. I tried verious settings and ended up with I/O buffer size 1024, being able to use one (1) more plug in from the UAD.
I used to run my old G5 with 1 UAD + 1 TC Powercore on 128 and no problem at all...
My audio interface is a RME Fireface 800. Is it true, that the FW bus also takes power from the PCI bridge?
Would it make sense to try different PCI slot positions? Well, I even traded my old Powercore to get a new PCIe one - still waiting for the software. But if the Mac isn't able to handle 2 UADs, how funny will it be with the Powercore card added ??
To make a long story short - is there anything I have to take care of or do differently in order to run 2 UADs in a MacPro?
Thank you in advance,
Joern

To Eric ->
well ... as long as you're planing only to get 1 card, it should be fine. I mean, your problem seems to be a bit more complicated - I never had to restart my system due to any plug ins. Even "the UAD thing" doesn't crash the system, but makes me hit the stop button asap. I personally wouldn't switch to ProTools as this is a huge step, depending of how many other plug ins you already bought to your system.
Regarding the Mac Pro - sure we're kind of beta testers. I make my living doing graphic design and video editing. Music is just an excessive hobby... I could write you a novel about updates, upgrades, crossgrades, bug fixes etc. But it was my decision not to wait a little longer so I guess I shouldn't complain
A little update to whom it may concern...
I tested both UADs individually in the meantime, both work fine - hardware error excluded I'd say. I tested all possible PCI slots with no change, neither worse nor better.
But here's some news: having only one card installed I was able to load plug ins up to a 85% performance load on the UAD meter. Still not old G5-like, but an improvement. Closed the song, installed the 2nd card, opened it again, performance meter down to 42% and what do I get: "RRRRRRRRRR..."
I had to remove almost all of the plug ins on audio tracks until I could play the song. I tried again, leaving all plug ins on audio tracks, but removing one or two from the main outs. Haha, song's playing.
In this very song I'm using 14, i.e. 7 stereo outs to sum these on my analoge console. So it looks like using a plug in in a main out causes more stress than in a single audio track. And it doesn't matter, if it's just a litte gate or a big Neve EQ. Bypassed or not also doesn't make a difference. One too much is one too much.
So I can use quite many plug ins on audio tracks, but I have to be really careful on the main outs. Sure I could try a work-around, routing the audio track to the busses (with plug ins inserted) and then to the main outs. Nevertheless, reaching a CPU usage of approx. 60% with plug ins in audio tracks starts to create some irregular clicks and pops (no clipping...).
With my next try I copied the whole song project including samples onto my internal disk. Switched off all the external disks and ran the song. No big change ... it got better, it's playing, but after the 10th try to record the song from the console back into the system without one click I gave up.
Finally I wrote an email to UA support and see what happens...
Have a nice sunday,
Joern

  • UAD-1e & Mac Pro

I did a search and a read, Universl Audio says the UAD-1e are compatible with the "most recent Macs". Are they really? and is the software ready as well?
I have a few $$ that my employer needs me to spend by tommorrow.
If anybody is using the UAD-1e with the new Mac Pro desktops it would be great to hear from you.
Also looking into getting Vienna Solo Strings. Any feedback from users would be great!
    Thanks
    -Allan

    Allan,
I can't speak for the UAD-e card, but in my 5 years or so using the UAD card that I do have, UA has always done what they advertised. The UAD-e is their new card that will fit the new PCI-e slots, found on the Intel Macs. They certainly wouldn't have released it, had it not been working properly. They're just not that kind of company.
As to the Vienna Solo Strings... I do have those. They are simply the best available, IMHO. The new VI is absolutely a dream to work with. Highly recommended!!

  • 10.9.2 Screwed Up My Mac Pro

I installed the 10.9.2 update on my Mac Pro (4,1) and everything seemed to go fine. Until I started the computer yesterday. When I started it it seemed to try and boot but then all I got was the power light blinking 3 times and going blank a couple of seconds and blinking 3 times again and repeating this. I finally figured out it had something to do with using a second monitor. I want to revert to 10.9.1 when everything worked. Will my repair partion still be 10.9.1 or did the update to 10.9.2 update the repair partition as well? I also have a disk image that I made of the system before the update that I made with Super Duper a few days ago if I need to use that. This is the first time I have ever had a OS update from Apple that broke more things than it fixed. I've been a Mac user since the G4 and OS9 days. Thanks in advance for the help!

Okay....After many hours of trying this and that to fix this issue I think I have some answers. First, it wasn't the update that broke things (my apologies to Apple). I tried the combo update and that seemed to work until I reinstalled a DSP card (UA UAD-2 audio processing card) along with the Nvidia Geforce GT610 video card I had been using. Then the same problem cropped up again. The computer wouldn't boot. I returned the OS to 10.9.1 and tried again. Same problem. What I finally figured out was that it's my KVM switch causing the whole mess. Both monitors work fine when hooked up directly to the Mac but when I insert the KVM switch the system will boot the first time but not if I shut it down and restart it. I've had this KVM for years and it worked okay with my G4, G5 and PC hooked up to it but for some reason it will not work with the Mac Pro in the configuration I have it now. The only other thing I haven't tried yet is having both monitors hooked up via DVI to VGA adapters and then trying to use the KVM again. Right now one monitor is hooked via DVI and the other is hooked via DVI to VGA adapter. The computer doesn't seem to have a problem with this. Actually this might be a problem with the KVM, DSP card and the aftermarket graphics card combination but everything works normally with out this KVM in the mix.
So would a new KVM fix this? I need the VGA output on the KVM because my PC only has a VGA output and the graphics chip is built into the motherboard. I'd rather not install a new graphics card on the PC and get a DVI KVM if I can help it.

  • Which Mac Pro to buy for Logic?

Hi, I am a Logic Pro user, I use lots of tracks with automation, lots of virtual instruments and other plugins.
I've finally settled on getting a Mac Pro, since I want to use a UAD card, as well as for expandability. So now... Which one? For a given budget, do I want to:
    1) max RAM
    vs
    2) max clock speed
    vs
    3) max number of cores/procs
Eventually I'll get lots of RAM, so #2 and #3 are my main questions, which will get me the the biggest bang for my buck specifically for use with Logic Pro?
    Thanks!

    Things to consider:
At the moment, the single processor Mac Pros arent that great in terms of value. 4 memory slots is just kind of crappy for a machine that costs so much.
That being said, logic wont support more than 8 cores, meaning nothing above the quad core is going to be worth your money for strict use with logic. We have no idea when logic will support more cores.
Now is not the greatest time to be buying a Mac Pro for various reasons. What kind of budget are you on? Your best bet might be a refurbished 2009 quad core or a 2008 octocore.

  • Mac Pro setup and expansions for Pro Audio applications? Help please...!

    Hello everyone.
I want to buy an 8 core mac pro mainly for professional audio applications (Logic, plugins etc) and I have a few questions about upgrading and expansion.
    1. Since Logic is a 32 bit application and can only address up to 4GB of RAM, does it worth upgrading to 16GB or should I spend the money upgrading the processors?
    2. I've noticed that the Mac Pro has three (excluding the graphics card slot) full length PCI Express slots. Can I install a PCIe card with the shorter connectors? (like this UAD-2 DSP card: http://www.uaudio.com/products/uad/uad2quadomni/index.html)
    3. Can the Mac Pro handle hard disk drives with capacity grater than 1TB and HDDs with speeds grater than 7200 rpm internally? If yes, why Apple doesn't have these options within the Apple Store?
I know that my questions may be a bit silly but since this is a big investment I would like to get everything right.
Any help and advice would be very much appreciated...

Windows 32-bit I have some bookmarked articles, but each app/process has its own 2GB address space and uses page and swap a lot more than Mac.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit
Free memory doesn't sit idle or go to waste, even Vista/7 will cache 3-4GB to improve system performance. And it isn't released until or unless freed, not fixed or locked and someone else requests more. Mac OS and Mac Pro especially need more memory, and it does show benefits.
A lot depends on how well written software is to take full and proper advantage. And that is ongoing.
Snow Leopard takes a step further into 64-bit, the first time that 64-bit drivers have been attempted. Big review of Snow Leo:

  • Mac Pro 5,1 hangs on shutdown

I use a 2012 3.33 GHz 6-core Mac Pro 5,1 in my recording studio, running OS 10.9.2 with 16 GB RAM. I use all of the PCIe slots:  slot #1 is the ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card, #2 is a Universal Audio UAD-2 Quad card for my powered-plugin library, #3 is the Avid Pro Tools HD-Native card and #4 is an OWC Accelsior 120GB 6G SSD which I use as my primary Pro Tools production drive.
Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks and added the Accelsior SSD (this January) the computer hangs on shutdown and occasionally on startup. With shutdown it's the same every time - when I shut it down I get a blank gray screen with only the cursor arrow showing, and I can still move the arrow around. After a few minutes I hit the power button to force it to shut off.
The machine also runs very sluggishly and takes forever to boot up.  It almost as if there are a ton of hidden processes bogging it down.
I've checked and re-checked for viruses, I've reset the SMC and PRAM, I use Disk Utility to verify all my drives and repair all the disk permissions about 3 times per week, and I do daily diagnostics with Tech Tool Pro 7.  I'm about to pull all the PCIe cards except the graphics card and disconnect all peripherals except keyboard and mouse and then reconnect everything in steps but before I do all that I was wondering if any forum participants have dealt with a similar problem ?

You could try a different SSD than the Mercury model from OWC.
Also, any and even the ones from OWC should have TRIM enabled and you do not.

  • PCIe card not detected by Mac Pro after a short while...

    Hi guys,
Small problem... I bought a Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro PCIe capture card. Installed it in PCIe slot 4 (the top most slot, as this is the recommended slot by Blackmagic), installed the drivers, rebooted, updated the firmware, rebooted and finally installed their capture software called Media Express.
The first time I tried to open Media Express, it kept coming up with a message saying, "The Blackmagic hardware can not be found in your system. Please check the installaion." So I shut down, waited a minute and restarted. Tried opening Media Express immediately after the computer booted and I was able to open it. Awesome! Or so I thought anyway...
After a short while, maybe an hour or so, I tried to open Media Express again. It gave me that same message. So I restarted my Mac, opened Media Express and all was good again, until an hour or so. This happens without fail every time I restart. It will open at first, then after a short while the Mac doesn't see the card anymore. It's not just with Media Express either. It happens with Flash Media Live Encoder as well. Except FMLE opens fine but doesn't see the card's inputs.
I contacted support. They told me to put the card in the next slot down. Same thing happens. So I sent the card back. They tested it for a whole day and a half. They haven't had a single problem with it. They told me it must be my set up. I have no idea what it could be though... Is it possible my PCIe slots in my Mac are faulty? My video card works fine, but that's in slot 1.
Anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Any feedback would be much appreciated as I'm going out of my mind right now. Things can never be as simple as they seem. There's always something that gets in the way.
    Anyway, Thanks for reading.
    Regards,
    Daniel

Having the same problem with a UAD card.....
the consensus seems to be that I need to boot in 32 bit and hopefully that will sort the problem...
    about to try it...
strange thing is...it works in my old mac pro (which is currently set to boot default in 64 bit)

  • Universal Audio Card in mac pro and logic together.

Hello, I am thinking on purchasing an Universal Audio Card and using it with a mac pro and logic studio.
Does anyone know if they have used or know about using a Universal Audio card (UAD-2 Nevana 32), or any other universal audio card?
Can you use this card with a mac pro and logic studio and does it have any latency issues? And can you use the Universal's mixor and logic's mixor at the same time, Or do you just use the plug ins on the UAD when using logic. Also it looks like it comes with one input on the card, so how do you plug in multiple guitars and bass and piano, or do you just run one input in and buy a input device for it (what would I need to buy for that?), Thanks so much.
    Lou.

Universal's documentation says that it is compatible with Logic 7 and Logic 8. You might want to ask in the Logic forums about hands-on experiences. Universal also has their own forums where you'll probably be more likely to get useful information from experienced users:

Can you use this card with a mac pro and logic studio and does it have any latency issues?
Yes you can. And yes, all DSP cards have latency, it's how they work. The UAD2 is better than the UAD1 in this regard, but in general, DSP cards are not used for tracking, they are used for mixing.
And can you use the Universal's mixor and logic's mixor at the same time,
I don't know what a "mixor" is. If you mean mixer, then you use Logic. The UAD card has no such thing as a mixer.
Or do you just use the plug ins on the UAD when using logic.
You use whichever plugins you want - Logic's own plugins, third-party native plugins, or plugins running on the UAD card in any combination.
Also it looks like it comes with one input on the card, so how do you plug in multiple guitars and bass and piano, or do you just run one input in and buy a input device for it (what would I need to buy for that?),
Er... perhaps you need to reassess what a UAD card is. It's not a sound card. Think of it like a specialised computer that runs special programs. When you load a UAD plugin, instead of the computer's CPU processing the audio, it's the computer on the UAD card that processes the audio - in ohter words, the plugin code runs on the card, but to all other respects UAD plugins behave just like any other plugin.
All audio I/O and routing is handled by Logic.

  • 2012 Mac Pro - balancing cores

    Hi,
I've been reading up on balancing the core usage in Logic 9 (I have X but won't switch until it's a little more glitch-free) but am running into problems where plugins on busses (or Auxes) drive one core into the red rather than spreading across all 12/24 cores.
After reading what Apple stated on their page about balancing multi-threaded cores, I still don't seem to have solved the problem! I've done as they've advised (moving 6-8 plugins from 1 Bus or Aux across 2 or 3 daisy chaining them together) but it still just assigns one core to those buses/auxes.
Am I missing something really obvious here? It's gotten to the stage now where just two UAD plugins are bringing a 2012 Mac Pro (Dual 2.6Ghz 6-core, 24GB RAM, 512GB Mac SSD, 3TB Audio) to it's knees, either on 1 aux, or as shown, across two. There's one other channel (a parallel drum bus) which has around 5 Native plugins on which are being loaded onto the 3rd core (with the 4th core blowing over those two UAD plugins)
How are people generally sharing the plugin load across cores, as it's getting to the point now of me wondering whether a new 2013 Mac Pro is going to solve the issue, which I'd be gutted about as this Mac is normally such a work horse!
    Ben

Hi Eriksimon, thanks for your reply!
I have my Threads set to Automatic, however I had it set to 16 and it made no difference. Sadly LPX is way too buggy and glitch-tastic for me to move over (one example of the repeat regions feature which has *always* worked since version 5 now slowly copies regions out of time... ) even though it's inviting to think that it'll use all the power I have!
I wasn't aware of the refresh thing upon reopening sessions, but I was working on something today I'd DC'd three weeks ago and again, it fell over, each time at the same place. It's so frustrating!
Buffer size is 1024 samples, PBR is set to Large
    Thanks again!

  • 10.9.1 update bricked my mac pro

Running a 2008 MacPro 3,1 with Mavericks installed and the 10.9.1 update puts the machine into a reboot loop.
Machine is a stock configuration except for a 240GB OWC Mercury E2 PCI-Express SSD, (which is encrypted and PW-protected).
When the machine starts, I get a gray screen with the Apple logo, and a dark gray progress bar.  When progress bar is complete, the machine shuts off completely.  Turn it back on and the same thing happens.
I had restored from a Carbon Copy Clone backup (10.9, also encrypted and PW-protected) and that worked, except when I returned from vacation, the machine re-applied the 10.9.1 and I am stuck in the loop again.
    How to fix this?

Okay....After many hours of trying this and that to fix this issue I think I have some answers. First, it wasn't the update that broke things (my apologies to Apple). • Which mac pro?

    Hey everyone,
I'm considering updating to a Mac Pro and wondered what model would be best suited to my needs. I'm running Logic Pro and using EZDrummer for recording demos. However, I'll be replacing the EZDrummer stuff with real drums so ultimately I'd be mixing around 32 tracks of audio and the usual fx plug ins needed for a final mix. I'm a guitarist and don't use many soft synths so the processor will mainly be dealing with fx plug ins.
Any suggestions as to whether I should go for the fastest quad core (2.93) or the slowest 8 core (2.26) as they're both at the limit of my budget and pretty much the same price. I'm in Australia and as a result we pay a lot more which is why I'm shooting at the low end and trying to maximize my costs.
Thanks again to everyone for your time and help!
    Cheers,
    Brett.

In fact all the current MacPros are more than enough for your needs. Buying a MacPro is a better idea than even the best iMac because of the possibility to expand with PCI - Express cards, for instance. I've got that 2.66 MacPro from the latest group and it stabile yet powerful. 32 tracks of audio even with tons of AU processors is nothing for that machine. If your budget is enough for a 2.26 MacPro then I would suggest you buying the 4x2.66 and a UAD2-duo which will give you some hi-end plugins. Now when you buy a UAD-2 duo or quad you get 2 additional very good plugins free. the 1176LN (one of those free ones) is in my opinion essential on drums. And the current MacPros work WITHOUT any issues with UAD-2s. No, I don't work for Universal audio
Oh, and one more thing: if the new Mac comes with Leopard then stay with it for a moment because so many people have issues with the Snow Leopard and Logic, not to mention some current AUs don't support the SL yet. Of course you will get SL for free (or for a shipping cost as I did)with a current Mac.

  • Eight Core Mac Pro

Just a post in case someone wants to know; Logic 8 with the new Mac Pro 8 core machines rocks. I got the stock 2.8GHZ machine (2GB RAM). Screen redraws and meters are smooth, no studders or core overloads. Upgrading from dual 2Ghz G5. Just have to replace my UAD-1 cards now - bummer...
Oh yeah, after the migration from the old Mac, the Apogee ensemble worked straight away without reinstalling the drivers, etc.
    Paul

Good luck with those bigger projects, Paul. I just posted this message on the UAudio forum. I sure hope I'm missing something simple because this is completely unacceptable:
So I decided to upgrade my old dual 2.5GHz G5 with the dreaded AMD-8131 PCI chipset to one of the shiny new 8-core Mac Pros that were announced last week. Of course, this meant that I also had to upgrade my 2 UAD-1 cards to UAD-1e cards. The cards are installed in slots 3 & 4 - the PCI Express 2.0 slot is open. I have a project with the following plugin instance counts:
    4 Cambridge
    5 SPL Transient Designer
    1 Pultec Pro
    1 Precision Maximizer
Would anyone have any idea why I would receive the "One or more Powered Plug-Ins have been disabled. CPU load limit exceeded" when opening the project on the new Mac Pro but not on the old G5? Both computers have 2GB ram. The old computer was running Tiger but the new one is running Leopard. I'm using Logic 8.0.1.
The thing is, all the plugins appear to be loading. If I unload the Precision Maximizer, the reload it, I get the error message as soon as I select a preset. Again, in this case, the plugin seems to be loading.

  • Mac Pro 4,1 Fan Problem

Just recently I did a fresh  installation of Mavericks 10.9.2 onto a new Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD (connected via an ICY Dock Enclosure) and placed it into my Mac Pro 4,1 (2009) 8 core as my main system drive and have  since been experiencing strange Fan behaviour.
When I boot my Mac up everyday for the first time the Fans run at full speed, but if I reboot the problem goes away?.....
I have tries resetting the SMC and PRAM but it still happens.
I have also recently added a UAD-2 Quad PCIe card as well as replacing the stock graphics cards (GT120's) with an ATI Radeon 5770 which was a while ago.
This is the first time I have experienced odd Fan behavior since purchasing the Mac 5 years ago.
    Can anyone help!!?..
    Many Thanks,
    Noodlez

Similar experience here. MacPro 4,1 upgraded processor 3.2 GHz, updated video to 5770 ATI. With those upgrades no fan issues. A few days ago added Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250 GB. OK first few days then shut Mac down for @ 48 hours. Today started it back up and PCI and Power Supply fans speeds were noticeably up. Waited a few minutes, rebooted and now back in normal/quiet range.
Just to update - my SSD install was done using a clone of my primary drive, not a clean install.

  • Cannot send email from 3 accounts Mac Pro

My brand new Mac Pro cannot send email using Gmail, Shaw, or iCloud.  At times I can send a simple test message, other times I cannot send.  It seems the more data in the email, it for sure cannot be sent.  The sent messages get stuck in the Out Box.  Full green lights, no red lights in the connection diagnostics window.  Any help in this regard will be much appreciated.

thank you for your reply, I did this with the same problem.  Turns out that I went to FAQ section and went to the "Sharing" section of "system preferences"  and changed my computer name by removing all spaces and apostrophe where it lists my computer name under Mac Book Pro, and problem solved.
