2 Xserves, 1 XRaid, no Xsan or Masked LUN - Options?

Hello, we've got an original Xserve hooked up to an XRaid. The setup works great, but we're going to buy another Xserve and I'd like to set something for failover.
I thought we would just get a fiber switch, hook up the XRaid and both Xserves and we'd be able to configure it with software. I think the masked LUNs would have worked (maybe), but it sounds like that isn't supported anymore.
I've read about Xsan, but it's too expensive for us right now. I will definately put that on the budget for 2009, but not now. As I read it we'd have to buy 2 additional Xserves so we had 2 for meta data and 2 for file services, plus 4 Xsan licenses. That's a lot of money (but really cool).
So, my current low-cost plan is to set up the new Xserve as the primary LDAP/file server and the old one as the backup (clone?). The XRaid would be hooked directly to the primary Xserve. If the primary Xserve went down, the backup would provide LDAP services, etc, but the XRaid would go offline. The plan would then be to power everything down, move the XRaid fiber connections to the backup server, then power everything up. Obviously, this presents 15 minutes of downtime even if all goes well, but my question is +will the backup Xserve (if it is configured as a clone or replica of the primary) immendiately recognize the XRaid and be able to host the sharepoints?+
Is there a different approach we should consider? Is there a way to have the 2 Xserves configured as above, but plug one XRaid controller into each Xserve? Theoretically this might give allow better throughput if I could split demand between the two Xserves. Then if one failed, I could move the fiber connection to the other Xserve? Another issue is that I'm not sure if the back up Xserve could independently host files. This would probably mean it wasn't truly a replica anymore. Perhaps it would work if it was only an LDAP backup server?
Any suggestions or clarifications would be appreciated. Thanks.

will the backup Xserve (if it is configured as a clone or replica of the primary) immendiately recognize the XRaid and be able to host the sharepoints?
Automatically? not at all. In order to do that it would have to be already configured to share those paths, even though those paths would be empty or non-existent.
However, it wouldn't be impossible to write a script that configured the shares. That way when you connect the fiber channel, you run the script and the sharing comes up.
There might be easier paths, though, or at least faster ones. Mac OS X Server has a failover daemon that allows one machine to monitor the health of another machine and then automatically reconfigure itself to take over that machine's tasks should it fail.
In this scenario you might want to consider connecting both machines to the RAID via a fiber channel switch, but have the second machine either not mount the array, or mount it read-only (you do not want two machines writing to the same array at the same time).
Now, then the failover daemon detects the primary machine is down, it can mount (or re-mount) the array as read-write, reconfigure the network (to take over the primary machine's IP address) and start up the file sharing services.
This can all happen automatically, with minimal disruption to users, and in a lot less time than 15 minutes.

  • Why does Fast Color Corrector have a Mask Output option?

Fast Color Corrector has a Mask Output option. In other effects the Mask Output option is used to see the mask created with the Secondary Color Correction feature within the effects. Fast Color Corrector does not have a Secondary Color Correction option.

    Well...we digress.
The Three-way Color Corrector Master wheel does not work the same way as the Fast Color Corrector color wheel. I think the Three-way Color Corrector Master control, overall, doesn't work properly. Try the following:
    1) In the Three-way Color Corrector, select the Master Tonal Range and reduce Saturation to 0. There is still plenty of color information present.
    2) With the Master Tonal Range selected, drag the Master Balance Magnitude to 100 degrees (keeping the Master Balance Gain at its default 20). Do the same with the Fast Color Corrector (using the same Balance Angle) and note how differently they behave. The Fast Color Corrector changes hue over all luminance levels. The Three-way Color Corrector Master control adjusts hue over what appears to be a sub-set of full luminance.
One other color wheel characteristic that I find confounding:
In most color wheels, 0 degrees is Red, 120 is Green, and 240 is blue. The numeric values increase counter-clockwise. OK, that is the norm. So why is it that with P Pro color wheels, Red is -110 degrees, Green is 130, and blue is 10? Or...looking at compass points: on the P Pro Color wheel, North is -90 degrees, East is minus or plus 0 degrees, South is 90, West is minus or plus 180?

  • 2x Xraid + 2 XServe how to use XSAN?

    Hello List Users!
    I have 2 XRaids and 2 XServes Systems. Each XRaid have 2 Arrays 7x500GB Raid5 and 7x 750GB Raid5.
The 2 Systems backup each other. I would like to publish all Diskspace on each XRAID as one big Networkvolume (2,5 + 4,0 TB) to the public (Just to make it clear for each Xserve/XRaid combination one Volume)
Is this possible to be done with XSAN?
Is it worth doing it with XSAN?
Can I use the 2 XServes as Metadata Controller: One as main controller and one as Backup controller?
Is it still possible to install other software on this XServes. I mean
Here you find a PDF and Omnigraffle file for illustration: http://www.ademmler.de/files/ademmler-xsan.zip
Any hints are more than welcome.
    Regards Alex

    Dear Donald!
Here is what I wanna do: http://www.ademmler.de/files/xraid-B.pdf
I also want to swap all HD Drives and put all 500GB drives into the main System and all 750 GB drives into the Backup System. The BackupSystem then will have some more space, wich is good for "keeping older data" in the backup (overhead). On the Backup System I will have 1 SpareDrive in each Array. On the main System I wont - I will need all space.
What do you think? Is it possible to switch down XRAID and move all HDs from XRAID2 into XRAID1 and get the same Array/Data working . . .? If yes I will have my backup running while I format XRAID2 with all the new 750GB HDs.
    Thank you for your advice

  • I can't unlock Xserve or Xraid with OSX Server Leopard

Or xraid no matter what I do. I didn't have this problem with Tiger and I now have it with leopard. I need to copy files onto the xraid and can't because it's locked. I've tried everything and nothing is taking. What could be happening?

I actually doubt it has anything to do with DNS, as the IP I mean begins with 192.168.1.....
That statement makes no sense to me.
Discussions of bad or misconfigured or unreachable DNS services are regular fodder here. If the translations inherent in most operations are slow or are failing, then the results will include missing services, slow access and timeouts ensue; this all looks like a bad network. Server Admin is sensitive to DNS, as well.
DNS translations go from host name to IP address, irrespective of the IP address block. And (for security and core services) from IP address to DNS host name; reverse DNS.
Mac OS X Server effectively requires functional DNS services, irrespective of the IP address block.
Unrelated to the discussion of DNS configurations, the 192.168.1.0/24 block is a poor choice for a network that may eventually be used with VPNs; that block tends to be used everywhere and subnet collisions will stuff up the IP routing inherent in VPNs.
And yes, do check your IP subnet block settings; make sure you're consistently in 192.168.1.0/24 on the stations connected across your LAN.
It'd be nice to see a future version of the tools run a DNS check on Server Admin (and probably Server Preferences) launch, given the frequency of reports of problems that turn out to be DNS configuration errors here, too.
I meant that the network the system is on doesn't have separate DNS servers as the router arranges the DNS data for the local network (xserve.local and emac.local), which can not be configured (not on the router I have then).
and, I'm not going to use VPN, only HTTP and FTP
    (ok, also https and sftp...)
and both are in the same range.

  • Airflow of and xserve and xraid

    Hi all,
    A question.
I am trying to put together an air conditioning system for a rack that will have 3 xserves and 2 xraids.
I am trying to find out what the airflow to the rack will need to be.
Is there anyone out there that could tell me the cfm of an intel xserve and the xraid fan systems at FULL tilt?
    Kind regards,
    Neil Watson

    CFM isn't your issue.
The fans are variable speed - they adjust based on demand and environmental conditions - and I've only ever seen them running full tilt (about 14K rpm) when there's something seriously amiss. Even under the highest loads I rarely see more than about 8K or 9K rpm.
For active cooling what is more important is either BTU (the thermal output of the server) or kW (the power draw).
Apple provide sample data for various XServe configurations in this tech note, and the XServe RAID in this one.
Your AC technician should be able to translate those figures into a suitable system for cooling your servers.

  • Using Xserve w/ XRAID, Binding to AD for Windows Filesharing. Issues.

Hi all, first time post im hoping that you guys can lead me in the right direction with the issue that im having. Seems like I have tried everything.
I installed an Xserver with a backend Xraid. My goal is to use the Server as a Windows file sharing passthrough for the storage on the Xraid. So I went ahead and bound the xsrv to AD, everything went fine. At that point Directory services asked me to go into server admin and click the "Join Kerberos" button. I went there and did that no errors. I went into workgroup manager, and I am authenticating to AD since i see AD groups and users etc. I create a share..,I then try to connect to the share, or even just browes the machine with smb. For example: (on windows) START->RUN->\\xsrv\ <ENTER>
At this point I am challanged for a username and password. so it seems that AD integration is not working. I have looked over the logs, and I know the issue is with Kerberos....i see this:
    [2006/12/17 09:28:58, 1]
    /SourceCache/samba/samba-100.5/samba/source/smbd/sesssetup.c:replyspnegokerberos(184)
    Failed to verify incoming ticket!
If i look into my Kerberos application i see that i DO NOT have a ticket either. Im almost sure this is the root cause of the issues..
Here is another odd thing, I can't tell you how many times I have joined and unjoined the AD domain. Here is the odd thing, after the first time joining, I no longer have the "Join Kerberos" button in the server admin. Its just not there.
Anyone that can help it would be much appricated.
Xserver Xeon   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

What services was running on this machine prior to binding it to AD?
If you have OD (master) setup you probably will get kerberos/LDAP problems.
The server has it's IP/name setup in DNS (A and reverse PTR records - in AD DNS machine - does not always have reverse zone configured if smaller network)?
    What does /Library/Preferences/edu.mit.kerberos look like?
    changeip - checkhostname gives?
I belive Tiger OS X Server automatically adds spnego=yes and security=ads to /etc/smb.conf when you bind to AD, older versions (Panther) does not.

  • Had to replace Xserve RAID controller and now I get Xsan Admin: duplicate LUN label RAID1-Left1

after we replace the controller volumes are mounting. Any advice on what to do with the duplicates?

Try reconnecting to the Xsan by closing the window in Xsan Admin, clicking "disconnect", then File -> New -> Connect to existing SAN. If you still see the duplicate LUNs after reconnecting, try shutting everything down and starting back up again in the order provided in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4027.

    Hello:
I have a G4 Xserve and a Xserve Raid running 10.4 server. I've recently installed several MacPro WS's running 10.5 and the spotlight search no longer works. I tired various tricks with no luck and I had the user connect to a new intel Xserve running 10.5 server and spotlight worked like charm. My question is going from 10.4 to 10.5 on the Xserve G4 am I going to run into any issues with the Xserve Raid unit anything I need to look at before I do this upgrade.

Using masks and selections are advanced workflows which justify a lot of tutorials and even whole books. Not something a tool description can achieve, especially when it deals with the interaction between two different, though similar ways to select areas of an image.
So...if anyone knows what the difference is, please let me know or how it's used.  Thx
When you understand masks and selection, you know that you can:
    - go from mask to selection and vice versa
    - combine selections (add, substract, intersection...)
The contextual menu you are seeing lets you combine selections with masks without turning the mask into another selection.
    Try this:
    - duplicate the background
    - desaturate the duplicate (Ctrl Shift U)
    - add a mask
    - Paint a part of the mask with black. That part shows in colour inside the grey background.
    - now use the lasso tool to cover a part of the masked area plus a part of the rest.
    - use the contextual menu and you should see the intersection.

  • Xserve + XRaid +MacPro

    Hi guys!
Here is my setup.. I have a Xserve, a Xraid and a macpro. The xserve has a quad-channel fiber channel card. I want to connect 2 of the channels to the XRaid and the other 2 channels to the MacPro (to share the Xraid via Xserve). The remaining computers on the network will connect to the Xseve (and xraid) via gigabit ethernet. Is this setup possible? Thanks in advance!

This is not possible. The four ports on the XServe's fiber channel card are not a fiber channel switch. At best the MacPro would see nothing, at worst it would break the entire fiber channel setup and neither machine would see anything.
Unless the MacPro is directly connected to the RAID via its own fiber channel card or a fiber channel switch it'll have to connect through the XServe's network.
Note that even if you do get a fiber channel switch you can't connect both hosts to the same RAID volume at the same time without implementing something like XSAN. On its own fiber channel doesn't allow for this. You're OK if you want the XServe to see one volume and the MacPro to see the other, but if you want them to see the same volume then you're out of luck there, too.

  • To Xsan or not to Xsan... bunch of Xserve raids + fibre switch

    Hi all,
I have 4 Xserve Raids and a fully licensed Qlogic switch plus an Intel Xserve to share it all.
I went ahead and loaded Lion Server on my Xserve for the "free" Xsan which is shweet but was pondering wether I need the overhead of the Xsan?
My need is just a simple NFS share, nothing fancy.
I was thinking to share 1 Xserve Raid as a volume (striping 2 sides together) and serve the other 3 as another volume (striping 6 sides together).
Any nuggets of wisdom are very much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    - Brian

There's nothing in your post that implies XSAN is needed.
XSAN is needed if you want to connect multiple hosts to the fiber channel network - in effect, giving each host direct access to the XServe RAIDs.
Since you stated you want '... a simple NFS share', that implies that the host XServe is sharing the XServe  RAID volumes over the network, therefore XSAN isn't required.
You might get better performance by connecting the clients to the fiber channel SAN, but it doesn't sound like an issue for you.

  • 2nd Xserve RAID + Xsan = ?

    So here's the situation...
There's an existing Xserve RAID shared via Xsan... Works great, except we're running out of storage space.
So we've purchased a second Xserve RAID, I've set it up in the RAID Admin and it seems to be all happy and good...
I then go to Xsan Admin and to the Luns tab, but the raid is no where to be found...
What do I need to do to make sure the new RAID can be added to the Xsan.
    Thanks Much
    Tommy

Definitely check the zoning on the fibre channel switch. In general it's a good idea to create a zone that has ONLY the computers and the storage you care about included. Which would mean if you add additional computers they can't see your SAN storage if you don't want them to.
This also means you need to broaden the zone and add 2 more ports when you add the second Xserve RAID, of course.

  • Oddball client not mounting XSan Volumes

Background: My client, a TV News broadcast station, had Apple and a third-party design and install a Apple based XSan storage and network. They ran all new fiber and gigabit ethernet to each station to use the XSan. It has been working great, with the exception noted below.
Setup: 2 MD Controllers, 1 XServe, 4 XRaids, each make up two 2 large TB volumes (raid 5, stripped together).
XServe, XRAID, MD controllers, and all clients are all connected together on a Fibre and Fiber Optic network using QLogic switches. SUBNET: 10.200.1.x.
Ethernet Network, also connected all the above together on HP Gigabit Switches. SUBNET: 10.100.1.x The public WAN is made available on this subnet by a connection to the HP switches. Still getting details on how this was done.
Everything is running OS X 10.4.8 or better, XSan File System 1.4.
    Setup
There are 8 workstations (edit bays) that act as infusion and editing stations. Each station has two XSans volumes mounted NEWS01 and NEWS02. They have the odd numbered bays use NEWS01 and the even numbered bays use NEW02.
    PROBLEM
All bays mount the XSan volumes, except one. FCP08 will not mount the XSan volumes. We have rebooted the workstation, and even went to the extreme of shutting down the entire setup all bays and MD controllers, File Servers, etc.. then bringing everything backup up. Same problem.
Based on some forum discussion, we have tried the following:
    * Ensured that there is no empty mount point in /Volumes
    * Uninstalled all XSan Software and resinstalled v1.4 from Apple's website.
    * Removed the client from the XSan Admin, and readded it, made sure to enter valid serial number, etc..
    * Verified that all fibers are working, all link lights look good, and you can ping across the MD network.
When you use the XSan admin from either FCP08 (edit bay 08) or from the server, and you add both MD XSans to it, you see the client, and you click on the client and click either Mount (read-only) or Mount (Read/write).
It will show "Mounting..." and then it will flip back to "not mounted". The only feedback we have received so far is "ACCESS DENIED". All affinity setting are set to rwxrwxrwx (wide open), and all the volumes and workstation logins all have the same access to the volumes. I can not find any restrictive permissions anywhere.
I plan on trying to move them away from a /etc/hosts type setup to a proper DNS Server running on their XServe using the DNS Server function of OS X Server. But currently all edit bay stations have the same /etc/hosts file installed, which accounts for MD and ethernet networks.
ANY IDEAS what is wrong with this workstation? With the setup?
I have had extreme ideas from some who have said that we need to blitz the entire client, and reinstall the operating system. I am not willing to go down that route, since each edit bay was built manually without an image (another aspect I will remedying soon). It will take sometime to rebuild this edit bay client if I that is the only solution.
The only this question I have if that is the popular opinion, is what is different from a client OS install and the existing one regarding the XSan? This are edit bays, not private workstations, and no one installs any extra software or surfs the net, etc.. They are used for ingest and editing only.
    HELP!
      Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi,
You could check if it is Fibre Channel related:
    from a terminal do a cvlabel -l
this should give you a list of the lun's in your volume.
When this tool does not show luns, you might have a zoning issue.
    Regards
    Donald

  • No LUNs in Xsan admin

I'm using Xsan 1.1 on OSX 10.4.7 and I added an new Xserve RAID into the mix. But the trouble is that the LUNs are not showing up in Xsan Admin (v.1.3).
`cvlabel -l` shows the two LUNs, labeled "unknown". so does `diskutil list`.
All Xserve RAIDs have the same firmware, no LUN masking is on, and all the ports on the fibre switches are in the same zone.
Disk Utility.app can see the LUNs and will let me make a software RAID combo of them , but that's what I want. What I would like is to expand two of my data-only storage pools, if they'd show up in Xsan admin.
I've looked the manuals, man pages, discussions and so forth.
    Any ideas?
    Thx.

I reveiwed the following documentation for adding LUNs to storage pools:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303571
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303570
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301911
    And it worked. Sort of.
I shutdown all the clients, except 2 or 3 (mdc, md backup and my admin Mac). Then I unmounted the volume from last remaining clients, and I stopped the volume. Then I proceeded to backup the cfg, check the volume, and add the luns to an existing storage pool. All went well, until it failed to update the volume with the new cfg. I reverted to the old cfg and added the LUNs to a new storage pool. That worked.
Thanks for everyone's thoughts on this one. I took more time to do it this time, then I did a month of so ago. Careful planning and backups (cfg and data) are helpful to peace of mind.

  • Migrating XRAID to Leopard Server

I have several XRAIDs that are connected to a Tiger G5 Xserve via a Sanbox fiber channel switch that I need to migrate to an Intel Xserve (2008) running Leopard (using the same switch). The XRAIDs are RAID5 configurations (no LUN masking). Has anyone else had to migrate XRAIDs that were setup with Tiger server to a Leopard server? Are there any issues with just shutting down the Tiger server, detaching it from the switch, firing up the leopard server, attaching it to the switch, and serving up the shares via Leopard? There shouldn't be any need to reformat the XRAIDs, correct?

You're correct - this is a no-brainer (just unplug and reconnect).
The only issue you may have is if you're using any kind of LUN masking or zoning in your switch, but it doesn't sound like that's the case. Even if you were the worst case would be the drive not appearing on the new machine until you updated the LUN mask/zoning map.
