2 xserves connect to a firewire video device

Hello,
I've had a lot of success with this but have had something happen once in a blue moon, so I wanted to check:
Say I have 2 xserve's and I have a video device (a canopus Firewire/RCA converter). Right now, I send the canopus a video signal via RCA and do video out via firewire to both xserves simultaneously, as I use them for dual webcasting. This works beautifully, but I noticed once in a while, the canopus locks up and the video's frozen on both machines. Easy solution is to just power off/on the canopus and it fixes this, but I wanted to check if there's any "danger" in doing this?
Thanks!

if you are using an intel box with qt broadcaster this is a known issue. Apple knows about it and working on it.

When trying to caputure, a box comes up that says "attempt to capture video without a video device. Please select video device from capture presets."

Under a/v settings -> summary -> video playback, it says "[missing] Apple firewire PAL." (I'm using PAL)
When trying to log and capture, I can't see the image, but can control the camera.
Background: I just reinstalled FCP HD and Quicktime.
If anyone has any ideas about this, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Nathan,
The setup of you system is a little unclear from your profile.
Are working in 10.3.9 with FCP4.5 and now gone back to QT6.5.2?
If so, that is a very reliable grouping. I'd say, unless you have changed or added a drive, changed the firewire port the drive is connected to or changed some other physical element, the QT reinstall is not working as it should.
Try trashing the receipts, download the full installer and then run it from your hard drive again.
    Good luck.

  • MacBookPro:Can you add firewire drive & video device at same time?

I want to buy a MacBook Pro 15" to edit on FCP and FCXpress, but i am concerned that there is only one Firewire Bus (and plug). I have a Canopus AVC 100 and an external firewire 400 drive and want to use both at the same time. I have always been told that you have been told you can not add a firewire video input source or a hard drive on the same firewire bus. The internal drive is not big enough for my projects and I want to capture directly to the external drive. I have been looking at several solutions, such as adding an ExpressCard-ePCI to give me an additional Firewire Bus. (The FireWire 800 addition would also be a bonus.) Are the two Firewire ports (400 & 800)on the 17" MacBook Pro on the same bus (resolving this problem)? I am looking to see what other editors are doing to solve this issue?

You shouldn't have any problems either
I field dozens of questions each week with issues on desktops and laptops due to the single FW bus limitation.
Glad it works for you, but please don't assume it will work in all configurations.
Some cams and FW devices do not play well together.
For less than $80.00 you can get a ExpressCard/34 firewire card.
I believe it's a good investment, particularly for the high overhead in FCS 5.1.

  • Connect FireWire 800 device to FireWire 400 port?

    Hello all,
does anyone know whether it is possible to connect a firewire 800 device (e.g. external Hard Disk) to a firewire 400 port on a e.g. MacBook?
I know only that it works for sure via special fw cable the other way round – FireWire 400 device to FW 800 port.
    Cheers,
    Gillion

    Hi Gillion!
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
My understanding is that with the appropriate cable you can connect a FireWire 800 to a FireWire 400 device and vice-versa.
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=4B8 F4B38&nplm=TP320LL/A
The machines will throttle the transfer speed down to an acceptable range for the slower (FW 400) device to communicate effectively.

    Hi all ,
We found the solution for this issue .
We have installed the crypto library in global executable directory and any way it will replicate those binaries to individual application servers.
But the parameters are still looking for global executable directory for loading crypto library during time.
So all application servers are trying to load crypto library files from global "exe" instead of local directory, which was clustered .Sometimes during  heavy network load it may cause some delays to load the libraries to individual application servers and in turn is causing the license key issues.
Note 982056 - The license key library has not been initialized yet..
SAP Recommend option for all SSF parameters should be instance profile parameters not in default parameters..This was mentioned in below note:

  • Can I use the HDMI Out on my macbook pro retina for audio without connecting a video device?

While the MBP has TOSLINK output from the headphone jack, TOSLINK does not have the bandwidth to carry the high resolution audio from many blu-rays and DVD-Audio disks. I would like to hook my MBP to an audio-only HDMI sink so I can pipe the multichannel output to my surround speaker setup.
My concern is that the MBP will get "confused" and do one of the following things - both of which are "bad":
    1) It will decide that a video device is there, and put the desktop on the nonexistent HDMI display OR
    2) It will decide to send no signal at all (no video, no audio) because it sees no video device.
    Any thoughts on this?
In short - thinking of using something like this: http://www.ambery.com/2hddodtsdihd.html
with the HDMI out of the MBP and then piping its 6 discrete analog outputs to my old (but excellent for computer speakers) Logitech Z680 setup.
But I want any movie video to remain unperterbed on my Thunderbolt display. And if I am not watching a movie and am just listening to multichannel FLACs or something, then I'd like to run the media player normally and have the usual desktop on my MBP or Thunderbolt display.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks to all!!

Not from Apple, you can go to the grey market if you choose but it is most likely that the only MB that will work is the one you already have.

Maybe, if the Sonnet is properly Thunderbolt compatible it should.

  • Firewire wont detect my video device

It's been impossible to get my mac to detect my Canon GL2 through firewire. I've tried turning off/on, changing cables, reseting the camera...and still, NOTHING!! This problem occured with my brand new G5, new Canon GL2, new (store bought) FCP5 HD...so, it can't be out of space or have a bug.
    Any ideas?? THANK YOU!!

    Welcome to the forum.
The inability of cameras to easily connect via firewire comes up here daily, if not hourly. (facility with the SEARCH function located in the upper right of the forum is highly encouraged.) Canon cameras seem to bring their own special problems as well. If you have an iSight G5, you may have other issues ...
Try this as a troubleshooting sequence -
    - Turn everything off
    - If you have an external firewire drive, disconnect it.
    - With only the Canon connected to the firewire bus, turn the camera on
    - Turn on the Computer
    - Open up System Profiler and look for the FIREWIRE section.
    - Do you see your camera listed?
    If no,
    - you have basic connection issues - try the firewire port reset (do a search here on the forum)
    - if you have an iSight camera - disconnect it and try again.
    If yes,
    - Open up iMovie and try to capture a short segement.
    - Did it work?
    if no,
    - there is something potentially wacky with your camera settings.
    if yes,
    - Now open up FCP, make sure your firewire communication protocol is FIREWIRE BASIC
    - Try to log a short clip and capture using Batch Capture.
    - Did it work?
    If no,
    - you likely likely need to reinstall Quicktime. Read through THIS ARTICLE.
    If yes,
    - you may need to install a second bus for your capture drive. You do not want to be capturing to the system drive.
    report back please.

  • Using the firewire 800 port for my firewire 400 devices

I will be purchasing, at long last, a new mac mini to replace my faithful and well behaved G4 mac mini. I have a 20" cinema display and an external firewire 400 backup drive with the same form factor that sits below the mini. I would like to continue to use these peripherals as well as my video camera DV out. Ideally, it would be cool to have a FW800 hub that had both 800 and 400 places to plug my peripherals, but I don't see that available. Should I get a hub and adaptors for the fw400 components I want to add, or use the hard drive with an adaptor to the mini, then use the FWports on the drive for the monitor, and whatever else I want, thereby using the drive as a hub...
Any advice to this ignorant question would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Paul

Since Firewire 400 devices still operate at Firewire 400 speeds regardless of whether or not they are connected by adapter to Firewire 800 ports, the best thing to do is just get a Firewire 800 to 400 adapter, and attach it to a Firewire 400 hub known to be able to do all the functions you desire.

  • Firewire Video Out

This is so maddening. Its happened before. I sit down to FCE and its been open on the computer. I click on a sequence, and want to see it on external video monitor that was operating fine earlier in the day. It always works fine. Suddenly, no output. My firewire is connected to ADVC-110 converter > video monitor via RCA. I refresh video devices, no go. Change the view to Desktop Preview - that works fine.
I remember having this problem long ago and the solution was in the size of the viewer and/or the canvas windows. I thought the cure was "Fit to Window" but that's not working. I've quit the app.
Easy set up says Apple Firewire NTSC, audio follow video. About this Mac/Profiler sees the ADVC-110.
Someone give me this easy answer. arrgh!

    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Firewire video camera

I have a firewire video camera and I just bought the new macbook pro. So I bought a new firewire cable that would fit the camera and the macbook pro. But the computer wont recognize the camera. What am I doing wrong?

    benjabock,
OK, you seem to be doing everything right, and your prior experience leads me to believe that you know the ins and outs.
My first guess would be a bum cable, even if it is brand-new. Yes, 4-pin to 9-pin is the correct type. There should be no difference between FW 400 and FW 800, as far as your camera would be concerned. FW 800 is entirely backwards compatible, and simply operates just like FW 400 would when a FW 400 device is connected (in fact, the entire bus defaults to 400 when a slower device is connected).
And all this narrows things down to either the cable, or the ports themselves. I think the most likely scenario is something along the lines of a malformed terminal on one of the cable's connectors, but it could really be anything (a bad wire within the cable itself, etc.).
So, I think some logical troubleshooting is in order. Does this cable work with some other FW 400 device (difficult to answer, since the most likely candidate for this would be a FW drive, which would in turn have a 6-pin port)? Does the FW 800 port on the Macbook Pro work with any other device, FW 400 or 800? Can you try a different 4-pin to 9-pin cable, preferably one by a different manufacturer?

  • Video device not detected

I am new to using flash media live encoder, very little
knowledge on how this works. I downloaded it today and plugged my
JVC HD 110 with firewire and got the error message that no video
device was detected when I opened the application. I also tried
using my Sony Handycam connecting it with a USB and still nothing.
I am running the encoder on the PC side of my Mac using Parallels.
    Any thoughts?

The Mac thing may throw this for a loop, but try buying a
Dazzle RCA to USB converter (yes, even if your camera already has
USB-sometimes cameras does not have a setting to allow the video
    out in real time).
Once you connect the Dazzle (they are at every computer store
'Micro Center', etc.), it will be in the list to select, if it
already isn't the systems selected choice-you will be able to
select it. Now, if your video camera does not have RCA and it has
the 1/8 inch or any other plug-you may be back to scratch (if you
have the 1/8 inch-you can adapt that to RCA and continue from
    there).
    Good Luck!

  • Connecting Camcorder to Firewire disables Firewire bus

    I have a strange problem:
My Canon MVX350i yet worked without any problems with my Intel iMac (Dec 2007).
Since I rebooted with the camcorder powered on and connected by firewire cable, I have huge problems.
Connecting the camcorder now disables somehow the firewire bus completely. E.g. firewire disks are disconnected just like unplugged while running and the camcorder will also not be recognized as video device.
What happened at this unfaithfull reboot?
I already deleted the preferences from my user account and I also reset the PRAM. Nothing helped.
The camcorder is still ok, because I can use it *without problems* on my *MacBook Pro*. Due to this fact, somethings *must not be ok now on the iMac*.
Interessting fact: Connecting my other video device, a Canon HV30, makes not problems.
Q: How can I make my MVX350i also working again?
Any hints are very welcome and will really be appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Roland

I too have been experiencing a problem like this with my Canon XL2. When plug in the XL2 using a firewire 4pin-6pin cable into the Firewire 400 port, it disables my firewire 800 external HD (i.e. disconnects it as if i just pulled the cable out). However, i can still use them separately, but not at the same time. I am unable to load any video directly to my external devices. I was able to do this with my old Powerbook G4, but not with my new iMac. Also, the USB devices interfere with connecting my camcorder, as if the computer doesn't even recognize the XL2 until all other devices are removed.

That's an error reported from DVD Player I believe...

There's some conjecture it has to do with HDCP, or Video Card problems, but the only 2 cures/fixes I found were Software related, one was cured by updating the OS, another by replacing the Video kexts.
I think this error also shows up if trying to use DVD player in Safe Mode, (too much research isn't good! ).
