2 year contract vs Edge (upcoming iPhones)

I am currently under contract looking towards the new iPhones.  Here are my details
-2 lines
-unlimited talk/ text
-shared data 4GB (could possibly go to 6GB)
-month cost 150 before taxes (160 with 6GB)
With upcoming iPhone 6 I would have the subsidized prices with a new 2 year contract agreement.  I wanted to know if the verizon edge plan would be worth considering (with 10GB shared data).  I've been reading that if you have less than 10GB shared data then Edge isn't really worth considering over the 2 year contract over the long term.  Wanted to get people's opinion on the matter.
I'm looking at getting iPhone 6 128GB and iPhone 6 plus 64GB.  I talked with a rep and with EDGE it would be a month of about $33 and $38 respectively tacked onto the 160 plan w/ 10GB shared data.
Is EDGE worth it? Would love to hear your opinions.  Thanks for reading.

Only you can answer that. I would say that if you're on a sub 10 GB plan then no.
On a subsidy your 2 phones would cost roughly $860, $400 each plus $30 upgrade fee. Plus taxes. $150 a month( 4 GB plan ) for 24 months is $3600. So total over 24 months is $4460 plus taxes/fees. With a 6 GB plan it's $4700. with 10 GB it's $5180
On Edge with a 10 GB plan over 24 months you're paying $215 a month for 20 months. And $130 for 4 months( assuming you get the Month2Month discount after your phones are paid off ) so a total of $4820. If you don't get the Month2Month discount then it's $5020
So if you're not interested in upgrading sooner than 2 years and if you really don't need more than 6 GB then I would say no. Kid of off topic but i would never pay $850 for a phone. And I wouldn't pay $400 for a subsidized on either.

  • Buying a used iPhone 3G, is 2-year contract still required?

Can I get the AT&T plan without the 2-year commitment since the original owner took care of the subsidies?

    You're welcome.
A two year contract is not required because you MIGHT want to upgrade your phone - that has absolutely nothing to do with the two year contract requirement for the iPhone whatsoever.
The first generation iPhone was not subsidized by AT&T in the traditional way, but a two year contract was required. A two year contract is required with the iPhone 3G also regardless if an existing subscriber qualifies for upgrade or subsidized pricing with a new phone, and for new subscribers who purchased a used first generation iPhone or a used iPhone 3G.
Most first generation iPhone owners qualified for upgrade or subsidized pricing with the iPhone 3G a year or within a year of the two year contract. There was no penalty when doing so, and the new two year contract for the iPhone 3G replaced the existing contract that was not completed. This was because the first generation iPhone was not subsidized by AT&T in the traditional way.
If Apple releases the 3rd generation iPhone next summer, I won't qualify for upgrade pricing on a new phone at that time, including for the 3rd generation iPhone, but you would at that time if you activate a used iPhone 3G as a new subscriber since AT&T did not give you a subsidy for the iPhone 3G when becoming a subscriber.
That is why I threw that in there.
It is part of the exclusive contract between Apple and AT&T that a two year contract is required for the iPhone.

  • Why is my battery life so bad on my iphone 4s. I signed up for a 2 yr contract with a new iphone 4s. The battery life didn't last a day. I went back to Apple and they replaced it with another iphone 4s. This one is just as bad. The iOS 5.0.1 does nothing!

I have never been so disappointed with an Apple Product such as the Iphone 4s. When I signed up with a new 2 year contract, I received my iphone 4s. I charged it fully the night before, then it didn't even last the day (with minimal usage). I turned off Location Services, Wi Fi, and Bluetooth, this helped a bit. But what is the point of turning these services off, when I NEED THEM!!!  The wonderful new Siri doesn't work properly without Location Services turned on.
So I upgraded to the iOS 5.0.1. version - that did absolutely nothing to assist the battery life.
Apple, what are you going to do about it?  My new Apple phone is a LEMON!
If I had of known how bad the battery life is on the iphone 4s, I would have got a Samsung Galaxy 2!!!!!

It doesn't really matter whether I am talking to Apple or not (and I'm sure they monitor these comments), I want everyone to know how bad this new iphone 4s is, and all of it's problems.
Apple have already launched an upgrade to the software - it obviously did not help, as many around the world would concur.
As far as being patient and waiting for another "update in the works" is concerned, it is just not satisfactory. This is not a cheap phone, and those who are experiencing these problems, should not have to be paying a substantial amount of money, for a very smart phone, that obviously, has some serious problems.

  • One year contract option?

Just curious if there will be a one year contract option for the iphone.

So, when I buy a new Verizon iPhone I will be paying for the phone which has already past half way of its product cycle. I will be paying for the phone which is about 7 months old when it is released. So verizon iPhone custometrs will be off of iphone release cycle by 6 months if I sign up for iPhone in Feb. However, If there is a one year contract option just like every other smart phone available now on VZW, it gives an option for the subscribers who want to change the phone every year.
However, they have already said that there WILL NOT be a 1 year contract option.

  • I currently have a DROID RAZR M and I'm 1 year into my 2 year contract.  Since the Kitkat update, the phone won't stay charged and it's very buggy.  I know this is not Verizons fault but it's also not mine. I would like to change my phone to an iPhone 5s

I currently have a DROID RAZR M and I'm 1 year into my 2 year contract.  Since the Kitkat update, the phone won't stay charged and it's very buggy.  I know this is not Verizons fault but it's also not mine. I would like to change my phone to an iPhone 5s and keep my same plan but switch to the Edge program. Is this possible? I don't think I should have to pay an early termination fee or anything like that since my phone has become almost unusable. I know under normal circumstances you have to wait 2 yrs to upgrade but due to the update and the poor service I'm now getting I hope Verizon can make an exception. Thank you.

How recently did you switch?  If it's less than 60 days, then Verizon simply reinstates your previous account.  The fact that you were on the EDGE plan and mailed the devices back, and they apparently are somewhere in the system, could cause complications, and it might just work out that you just go back on the same plan and they set you up with the same devices.  I'm not sure how it will go - but since you are still being billed for the devices...

  • 2 year contract to verizon edge, can I return any smartphone?

I went in line waiting for the new iPhone 6 only to find out that I must return my old phone in order to switch from a 2 year contract to Verizon edge. I currently have a Iphone 5S and this phone is worth easily worth $300 so trading it in wouldn't be a good financial move. Is it possible to get any working smartphone and use that as a trade in to switch to edge?

Unfortunately, this is not T-Mobile and you have to turn in the same exact phone that is under contract. Verizon is accepting your iPhone 5s in lieu of charging you an ETF fee.

  • Can you get the iPhone 4 for $99 without a 2 year contract?

I want to get the Iphone 4, but if I haven't been with AT&T for more than 2 years (my contract 2 years yet) can I still get it for $99?

If I couldn't get it for $99 then what would be the alternative price for not having the 2 year contract?

  • Does activating a used iPhone 1.0 by a new owner require a 2 year Contract

If a person buys a used iPhone 1.0 will they be required to sign a 2 year contract even if they have an existing AT&T account.

It depends on what you are talking about. If you buy a refurbished (used) iPhone directly from Apple or AT&T, then yes you will have to sign a contract. However if you buy a used iPhone from a friend, family or some other non-Apple/AT&T entity then no you can pay as you go.

  • IPhone 6 trade-in scam now locked into 2 year contract

Does anyone know were I can file an official complaint with Verizon?  I can't believe the run around I'm getting with Verizon.  I spoke to a customer service rep back on October 18th about the iPhone6 trade-in program.  I was told that I qualify for the trade-in and that after signing up for a new 2-year contract they would initially charge me $200 for the new iPhone 6 but as long as I return my iPhone 6 by December 10th I would be given a Verizon credit of $200,  I even asked during the conversation with customer service to verify that I would definitely be getting the $200 back in credit and she'd confirmed that.
Couple of weeks later I receive my new iPhone 6 but no return instructions or pre-printed label to return my iPhone 4.  When I called customer service today they told me I missed the deadline by 3 days and that I don't qualify for the promo???  How can that be when I was guaranteed by the customer service rep that I did qualify and that there would be no issues.  When I asked to speak to a supervisor and told him to check the recording of the phone conversation I had with customer service back on the 18th he told me that what customer service tells it's customers isn't legal binding and she was wrong to tell me I qualify for the promo.  So because of her mis-information I know locked into a new 2-year contract that I can't get out of and I'm paying $200 for a phone that I thought would be free.  I can't believe Verizon would treat their customers this way.  Are they telling me that I can't trust anything a customer service rep tells me because it's not legally binding?  Well know I'm legally bound to a 2year contract.  Thanks a lot Verizon!
You better believe I will be telling all of my friends, family and co-workers about how Verizon treats their customers and I will be pushing them to switch to another carrier that actually treats their customers with respect and doesn't trick them into 2-year contracts like they did to me.

I understand you are upset about not getting your $200, but seriously they tricked you into signing a 2-year contract?! REALLY?! You made your own decision to buy the phone with Verizon, things can change the day after they tell you something it's how ALL CELL PHONE CARRIERS are!! So even if you do switch <<Comment removed >>  , the other carrier will most likely do the same thing. You aren't entitled as a person or customer to every little thing Verizon does, some things you just won't qualify for <<Comments removed >>  .There will be other promotions going on you could qualify for. Everybody makes mistakes, it shows we are human, so be mad at that rep all you want she made a mistake you don't know if she was new or not, what if you were her first call customer? Why do people not think about this?!  <<Comment removed >>

  • Can I get a discount on the iPhone after my AT&T 2 year contract is up?

I've had my old phone for almost 2 years, and on the AT&T site it has a bunch of phones that have huge discounts for them if your 2 year contract is up. So does that apply to the iPhone? I didn't see any info about that on the AT&T site.

You can not get a discount on the iPhone. You will need to pay the full 399.00 even when your upgrade time comes. The upgrade discount is not applicable to the iPhones.

no. edge is payment plan for new phones being paid at full price.

  • If I buy an iPhone from the Apple website, and then go to Verizon to activate it, will it reset my 2 year contract? Also, will Verizon charge extra for activating since the price on Verizon is higher than the Apple website's price?

It's all very confusing to me, I need some answers from experienced customers.

I already checked. I purchased my iPhone 3G on the launch date back in July '08. I've paid the bill the day my bill was issued, days ahead of its due date, and for some reason, even through it's magic 8-ball wisdom, said I was not eligible for and upgrade. Not till Dec. of this year at least.
So even though my phone is now technically 'mine' and off their contract, they still won't unlock it for me? How come?
